Food for the searching soul

By Kayshak - Jan 26 2009
Read more
With humor, passion, and most importantly, an impressive base of knowledge, Pastor Ron Moore from South Hills Bible Chapel delivers heart healing, soul satisfying sermons that are wonderful - whether you are a mature christian or new to your walk with Christ. As a long-time believer but new attendee of the Chapel, I was immediately struck by how much God has his hand on Pastor Moore. I have to watch myself, because his words have so touched my heart that I could easily elevate him to rock star status and be quite awestruck by him, but he wouldn't like that, so I guard against it by remembering that he is a humble servant of God. Try any of the series and I'm sure you'll find what I have found; a real world perspective that's grounded in the faith and God's word. Easy to follow and without the hellfire and brimstone retributions, these sermons will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on any who listens. But don't take my word for it . . . go on . . . give it a try.

Four Goals of our study in 1 Corinthians

Proclamation and Demonstration

  1. Focus (and refocus) on Jesus.
  2. Deal with the issues of sexuality in our world and in our lives.
  3. Invest and engage in meaningful relationships.
  4. Share Jesus with clarity and relevance.

1 Corinthians 1:1-9

Eyes on Jesus: Focus

God’s work is real in your life—even in your deepest failure.

Your spiritual standing is initiated by God and sustained by him—even in your deepest failure.

The Believer’s Standing

  1. God called you to himself.
  • He called you to be holy (a Saint).
  • He called you into fellowship with his Son.

  1. God set you apart for himself.
  • Positional Sanctification
  • Progressive Sanctification

  1. God has given you gifts to be used for him.

  1. God will keep and protect you to the end.

God’s Grace is real!
Even in our deepest pain.
Even in our deepest failure.

Ecclesiastes 3:11b - …He has put eternity into man’s heart

  • Hell is a real place

Matthew 10:28 - And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

2 Thessalonians 1:9 - They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,

Romans 2:5 - But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God's righteous judgment will be revealed

  • Hell is darkness

Matthew 25:30 - And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

  • Hell is eternal

Matthew 25:41 - “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Mark 9:48 – “…the fire is not quenched.”

Matthew 25:46 – “And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

Romans 3:10-12 - as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”

Romans 3:23 - for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Isaiah 66:1 – “Thus says the Lord: “Heaven is my throne…”

John 14:1-2 - “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?

  • Heaven is a real place

2 Corinthians 5:1 - Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.

  • Heaven is our immediate reality upon death

2 Corinthians 5:6-8 - Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. We live by faith, not by sight.  We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.

Revelation 21:22 - And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb.

  • We will have resurrected bodies

Philippians 3:21 - who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

  • We will fulfill our ultimate purpose

Revelation 21:4 - He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

  • No more death, nor mourning, nor crying, nor pain

To experience the promises of eternity with God, Jesus is the only way to heaven.

John 14:6 – Jesus said to him, “I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father except through me”

Overview: Proclamation and Demonstration

APOSTLE’S CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;[1]
the third day he rose from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from there he shall come to judge the [living] and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the [universal Christian Church,][2]
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Four Goals for our Study in 1 Corinthians

Goal #1: Focus: Jesus

Goal #2: Sexuality: Clarity. Purity. Satisfaction.

Goal #3: Relationships: Engaged. Invested.

Goal #4: Sharing Jesus: Relevance

[1] Many versions of the Apostles Creed include “he descended into hell.”  It is said to have been added at the Synod of Sirmium in 359. There are many interpretations of this phrase. Since the Apostles Creed is not Scripture and functions as a summary of our beliefs, I have chosen to leave this phrase out for our purposes.

[2] Here the Creed states, “holy Catholic church.” The Creed was compiled long before there were Catholic and Protestant churches. The word “Catholic” means “universal.” The purpose of the statement is the profession of belief in all believers making up the Church (big “C”). Again, since this is not Scripture, I have replaced “holy Catholic church” with “universal Christian Church” to convey the original meaning.

Five Principals of Anchoring in Trust:

  1. Anchoring in trust is anchoring in the person of Jesus.
  2. Anchoring in trust is anchoring in the instruction of Jesus.
  3. Anchoring in trust means you have to get out of the boat.
  4. Anchoring in trust is secured by spiritual focus.
  5. Anchoring in trust reaches up.

“Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.” - Jeremiah 32:17

The subject of 1 Corinthians 8 is eating meat offered to idols. The issue of the passage is that some people believed it was okay to eat meat offered to idols and others believed it was a sin. But the heart of this passage is found in the last verse of the chapter - Believers will make needed sacrifices for other believers.

BIBLICAL FRAMEWORK OF SEXUALITY

  1. SEX IS GOD’S IDEA AND DESIGN (Gen. 2:7, 24)
  • Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 6:19).
  • Bodies are not simply pieces of furniture to decorate or display; they are not trappings about which we have conflicted feelings…they are not objects to be dieted away, made to conform to popular standards, or made to perform unthinkable athletic feats with the help of drugs; they are neither tools for scoring points nor burdens to be overcome.

The primary point of this passage is found in 1 Cor. 6:19-20

  • Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit (6:19)
  • Glorify God with your body (6:20)

This passage is built around three sayings the Corinthians used to rationalize their sin.

  • “All things are lawful for me” (6:12)
  • “Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food” (6:13-17)

ONE FLESH RELATIONSHIP

PHYSICAL ONENESS: AN EXCLUSIVE SEXUAL COMMITMENT

SPIRITUAL ONENESS: GROWING TOGETHER IN YOU LOVE FOR JESUS.

EMOTIONAL ONENESS: COMMITMENT TO EXCLUSIVE FEELINGS.

MISSIONAL ONENESS: GOING IN THE SAME DIRECTION AT THE SAME TIME FOR THE SAME REASON.

  • Every other sin (or every sin) a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body (6:18)

FIGHT THE NEW DRUG

https://fightthenewdrug.org/get-the-facts/

This is not a Christian site. It is a researched cite with several articles about how porn affects the brain like a drug, how it affects sexual tastes—many porn consumers get aroused by things that used to disgust them, why porn causes a person to need an ever-increasing dosage, how porn kills love, how porn leaves consumers lonely, how porn fuels sex trafficking. Disclaimer: I have not read every article. You may not agree with everything written. And I am sure someone will not like the way it’s presented, or the research cited.

FOUR GOALS OF OUR STUDY IN 1 CORINTHIANS

PROCLAMATION AND DEMONSTRATION

  1. Focus (and refocus) on Jesus.
  2. Deal with issues of the “flesh.”
  3. Invest and engage in meaningful relationships.
  4. Share Jesus with clarity and relevance.

Paul exhorted the Corinthians for ignoring sexual sin in the church (5:1-5)

Pornea refers to any illicit sexual act outside of marriage between a man and a woman.

Paul used the analogy of the Passover to urge believers to address issues of sexual sin (5:5-7).

Paul explained the seriousness of sin by instructing believers how to relate to an unrepentant believer (5:9-13)

We must be those who understand our culture and understand our hearts. We must understand what is at stake.

The Context (Luke 2:22-24)

  • The ritual of purification and consecration was to be done forty days after birth (Lev. 12:3-4; Ex. 13:1-2).
  • “A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons” was the sacrifice God allowed for the poor.
  • Everything was done by Mary and Joseph “according to the Law….” God made his Son play by the rules.

Simeon (Luke 2:25-26)

  • Righteous (Trust. Obedience. Repentance. Perseverance.)
  • Devout
  • Waiting for consolation of Israel
  • Indwelt by Holy Spirit

Simeon’s Prayer (Luke 2:27-32)

  • Jesus brings peace in life and death.
  • Jesus makes salvation possible for “all peoples.”

Simeon’s Prophesy (Luke 2:33-35)

  • Jesus is the dividing line. Response to him will cause “the fall and rising of many.”
  • Our response to Jesus reveals what is in our hearts.

Simeon’s Story: Three Observations

  1. Only Jesus can give you the peace that you desire.

Romans 5:1

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

  1. Only Jesus can give you the peace you need when the storm hits.

Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

  1. What do you produce in the lives of others? Peace or Conflict?

Romans 8:6

For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Genesis 3:15 - Protoevangelium - First Gospel

God redeems people from sin and death

God redeems people by the blood of Jesus Christ

God redeems people to new life in Jesus for eternity

“Such grace is costly because it calls us to follow, and it is grace because it calls us to follow Jesus Christ. It is costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life. It is costly because it condemns sin, and grace because it justifies the sinner. Above all, it is costly because it cost God the life of his Son: "ye were bought at a price," and what has cost God much cannot be cheap for us. Above all, it is grace because God did not reckon his Son too dear a price to pay for our life, but delivered Him up for us.”
– Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Cost of Discipleship

God desires to use your redemption story to continue writing his redemption story

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Does God get angry?

“A study of the concordance will show there are more references in scripture to the anger, fury and wrath of God, than there are to his love and tenderness” – A.W. Pink, The Attributes of God

God’s Wrath

WHY - God is holy, therefore he is pure and separate from all evil and sin

HOW - God is just, therefore he judges all impartially according to His righteous standard

WHO - God is love, therefore he placed our deserved punishment for sin on his Son, Jesus Christ

Unbeliever - May an understanding of God’s wrath cause you to trust in Jesus as your Lord and Savior

Believer - May an understanding of God’s wrath cause you to revere him and follow hard after Jesus

We have learned: God is beyond human understanding. God makes himself known to us. One God exists in three Persons.

God is independent.

God is Self-Existent.  He has been, is, and will always be.  He is unchanging.  God is Self-Sufficient.  He is not limited or lacking in any way.

  • He loves me unconditionally.
I bring nothing, yet his love is without condition.
  • His gift for me is free.
There is nothing we can do to work our way to God.
  • His desire for me is pure.
He is not served by human hands.
  • He prepares me for eternity by letting me work with him in time.
    He calls us ambassadors.

Three Gods or One? The Trinity

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Through this series, we want to:

  • Know God more intimately
  • Live for God more intentionally
  • Share the love of God more boldly

Last week we learned: God is beyond human understanding. God makes himself known to us.

Trinity: One God existing in three Persons

The Trinity remains a mystery. There is one God existing in three Persons with the same attributes working distinctly yet in perfect harmony. In order for us to grasp the distinct work of each Person we can think in these terms:

  • God the Father loves you.

Due to our sin, God initiated the plan to rescue us for eternity.

  • God the Son rescued you.

Jesus carried out the plan by coming to earth to die for us on the cross.

  • God the Spirit befriends you.

The Holy Spirit implements the plan by giving us spiritual life and introducing us to Jesus. He then takes up residence in us to teach, guide, convict, and encourage us.
