Teresa, thank you for this insightful podcast! Joshua and you have opened my mind as to how to view the whole of (not only the Millenials) all generations in the workforce and how adapting culture and thought can make an organization far more successful. One major takeaway from this podcast was that despite everyone’s reliance on technology for communicating, we do want more face-to-face interaction. I will be sharing this podcast with my clients!

Rank #4: Episode #31 – Ethics In The Workplace: Dr. Steven Mintz

Podcast cover
Read more
Dr. Steven Mintz

Today’s special guest is Dr. Steven Mintz, author, speaker and "Ethics Sage." SAFFIRE LEGAL PC’s founder and principal attorney Teresa McQueen talks with Dr. Mintz about the impact of ethics in the workplace and focusing on creating a more productive and civil working environment.  A wonderful episode that highlights the practical steps employees and employers can take to create a more ethics-minded workplace.
Workplace Perspective is a regular podcast series for employers and employees focusing on education, training, and the law to help organizations of all sizes develop and maintain successful employer / employee relationships.
"You have to be pro-active with ethics - not reactive - to get the positive result." - Dr, Steven Mintz

Highlights From This Week's Workplace Perspective:

Organizations can learn ethics, but it takes having an open-minded leadership that wants to learn, evaluate their own systems, and be open to change.
To promote a culture of ethics, organizational leadership needs to "act the way you are asking your employees to act."
"Employees tend to act in the way that they think will be rewarded."
Common dangers zones for unethical behavior flow from messages sent from the top; a lack of "stakeholder capitalism;" and rationalizing unethical behavior.
Ethics as an awareness issue and the evolution of the 'ethics culture.'
Dr. Mintz' Ethical Tips for Employers and Employees

To achieve positive results you need to be pro-active with ethics, not reactive.
Think before you act and live by the mantra of "do no harm."
Consider the consequences of your actions before you act. "It takes a long time to build a reputation for trust, but not very long to destroy it."
Go ahead and draft that angry tweet or email, but send it to yourself before sending it to its intended recipient or out onto the internet.
Find a mentor or adviser - someone whose opinion you respect - to go to for advise or to run ideas by before making a report or taking action.

"The modern company is a fascinating phenomenon...When you have that many people it creates its own microcosm."  - Albert Eloyan
Highlights From This Week's Workplace Perspective:

How employers see employee engagement vs. how employees feel about the engagement.

Today’s special guest is attorney and Human Resources professional Mona Shah. With over ten years of HR experience Ms. Shah as accumulated a wealth of experience working in the field of human resources. Her impressive career spans various industries and includes working as an HR professional for Twitter, Kaiser Permamente and most recently California Pacific Gas & Electric.

SAFFIRE LEGAL PC’s founder and principal attorney Teresa McQueen talks with Ms. Shah about her views and insights into our traditional 9-5 culture and how the workplace dynamic is shifting to become more flexible. This engaging conversation delves deep into the ways companies are evolving to accommodate both local and international employees to obtain the best possible talent available.
Workplace Perspective is a regular podcast series for employers and employees focusing on education, training, and the law to help organizations of all sizes develop and maintain successful employer / employee relationships.

"Market conditions, workforce demands, and globalization has changed the work culture and environment. The 9-5 brick and mortar isn’t working any more due to these factors. The work place is shifting to a more flexible and remote workplace." - Mona Shah

Highlights from This Week's Workplace Perspective:

Employees get a better work/life balance and can work from home is a trend that is coming up and benefiting employers and employees.
It’s not just tech industry that’s adapting this type of workplace - the remote workplace demand is driven by micro climates too. Even older companies are making changes to acclimate to this new environment.
The difference between companies that are open to these changes versus some tech companies that have had these procedures were in place since the beginning of the company. There is an appetite for [remote workforce] and many companies are starting to figure out how to supply it.
Need to implement policies and procedures and processes that are fair, consistent, scalable and sustainable to make sure that these distributed  teams can be managed in the right way, Otherwise there is a lot of derivative types of things that can happen if these teams aren’t managed in the right way.
“Distributed workforce” - anywhere from someone who is working flexible work hours or someone who is working remote full time or employees who are working in the office or around the office domestically or around the world.

(c)TJMcQueen

Today we’re in full holiday mode with our annual Holiday Survival Guide. The holiday mix & mingle season is in full swing which can mean added stress for those who dread the inevitable holiday business social scene. Fear not! Workplace Perspective is here to help you sail through your holiday events with confidence and style!  SAFFIRE LEGAL PC’s founder and principal attorney Teresa McQueen talks today about the importance of sending an RSVP, how to engage in small talk, and ways to preserve that all important business relationship as you politely disengage from a social conversation.
Workplace Perspective is a regular podcast series for employers and employees focusing on education, training, and the law to help organizations of all sizes develop and maintain successful employer / employee relationships.
"Taking the time to think before you act and then acting in way that builds those all important business relationships will go a long way toward helping you shine a bit brighter and solidify your reputation as someone who understands the value of developing and maintaining professional relationships."  - Teresa McQueen
Highlights From This Week's Workplace Perspective:

Failing to respond to an invitation is one of the most frustrating mistakes people make. By failing to respond to the invitation, you’ve frustrated your host and are well on your way to making a bad impression – and you haven’t even set foot in the door!
Be sure to respond to invitations IMMEDIATELY! A good rule of thumb is to respond within a day or two of receiving the invitation.
The dictionary defines small talk as “polite conversation about unimportant or uncontroversial matters, especially as engaged in on social occasions;” Take it for what it is and run with it.
If meet and greets make you nervous keep in mind most all social business events are structured as meet and greets. This means attendees are expecting to have people introduce themselves. Half the battle is already won!
When politely disengaging from a social conversation, taking the time to consider your options for disengaging honestly will assure that your actions are sincere, genuine, and authentic. And remember, being truthful is an important part of acting honestly.

Rank #13: Hot Topic – Legislative Update 2020

Podcast cover
Read more
Today's Hot Topic focuses on some of the new legislative changes set to take effect in California on January 1, 2020.  SAFFIRE LEGAL PC’s founder and principal attorney Teresa McQueen talks about the new laws impacting mandatory arbitration agreements, the codification of the Dynamex ABC test, and what policies you’ll need to have in your organization's employee handbook as of January 1st.
Workplace Perspective is a regular podcast series for employers and employees focusing on education, training, and the law to help organizations of all sizes develop and maintain successful employer / employee relationships.
"Enacted to quote, “codify the decision in the Dynamex case and clarify its application,” AB 5  does nothing more than muddy the waters and once again add confusion to what was - for the better part of a year - a very straightforward analysis." - Teresa McQueen
Highlights From This Week's Workplace Perspective:

ABC test remains in effect, but if a court rules that the 3-part ABC test cannot be applied, then the issue of whether individual is an employee or independent contractor is to be determined by applying the Borello factors
Keep in mind that the ABC test is an ‘all or nothing’ test – all 3 factors must be met for the individual to be classified as an IC – while Borello requires a weighing of the facts against many various factors
The existing Department of Fair Employment & Housing deadline for filing claims of harassment, discrimination or retaliation is extended from 1 year to 3 years (from date of last act of harassment, discrimination or retaliation – unless an exception applies)
AB 51 prohibits employers – not subject to Federal Arbitration Act – from requiring applicants/employees to agree, as a condition of employment, to mandatory arbitration of employment related claims (under the CA Labor Code or the Fair Employment & Housing Act)
Deadline for complying with SB 1343 is extended by SB 788 to January 1, 2021 (with some exceptions)

Rank #15: Epsiode #29 – The Role of AI in the Workplace – Michael Ashley

Podcast cover
Read more
Today’s special guest is Michael Ashley, Owner and Creative Content specialist at Ink Wordsmith. Mr. Ashley is also a speaker and co-author of "Own the A.I. Revolution: Unlock Your Artificial Intelligence Strategy to Disrupt Your Competition."  SAFFIRE LEGAL PC’s founder and principal attorney Teresa McQueen talks with Mr. Ashley about his views artificial intelligence and its impact on the workforce of the future. This engaging conversation delves deep into Mr. Ashley's theories of how artificial intelligence may impact existing jobs while increasing our quality of life and improving certain professions.
Workplace Perspective is a regular podcast series for employers and employees focusing on education, training, and the law to help organizations of all sizes develop and maintain successful employer / employee relationships.

"AI poses an opportunity for us to be more human than we've been before." - Michael Ashley

Highlights From This Week's Workplace Perspective:

"AI is any task or activity completed by a program or a machine that if a human being did the same thing we would say it requires intelligence to complete it." Michael Ashley
Andrew Yang - author of "The War on Normal People" - states that:
"The media and the public need to be talking about artificial intelligence and the possible threats of automation more. We have some understanding that AI is coming for blue collar jobs - truck driver is raised a lot - but what people don’t realize is that it is also coming for white collar jobs."
Amazing new technology called AI Writer aggregates content on the web to help write blogs. Mr. Ashley discusses how this can be considered plagiarism since the person who publishes the blog post just copies and pastes it. But also considers how far is that from original AI content.
Author Kai-Fu Lee in his book “AI Superpowers: China, Silicon Valley, and the New World Order” speaks about what AI does for you. In a sense we do have superpowers when we use artificial intelligence. We - in essence - merge with AI to become bigger or greater than we are right now.
The ethics of artificial intelligence: How super intelligence is achievable through AI. We are able to behave and think in ways beyond how we can think now. What happens when everyone has the capability, but there are some that won't have access. Do they get left behind?
Michael Ashley's Tips for Employers and Employees

We need to begin to see the humanity in other people.
We need to find value in other people more than just how much money they can earn us.
If we recognize that automation is coming for most jobs how do we begin to relate to each other? Will we begin to relate in a way that we should have been doing all along which was to be kind to one another because they’re a living creature.
We need to have more awareness about artificial intelligence and more public discussion about the future.
Artificial intelligence can't do what people can do which is to integrate information.
Artificial is exactly what humanity needs in this moment. It is a catalyst for us to change how we relate to each other.

Michael Ashley

Rank #16: Episode # 36 – Write to Influence!: Col. Carla Bass

Podcast cover
Read more
Ret. Col. Carla Bass
Today's guest is Col. Carla Bass. SAFFIRE LEGAL PC’s founder and principal attorney Teresa McQueen talks with Carla about her book Write to Influence!, why every boss needs a staff that can write effectively and how to banish bureaucratic blather - We love that! Carla also shares with our listeners  some very practical tips for improving your writing skills.
Workplace Perspective is a regular podcast series for employers and employees focusing on education, training, and the law to help organizations of all sizes develop and maintain successful employer / employee relationships.
"Powerful writing changes lives." - Col. Carla Bass
Highlights From This Week's Workplace Perspective:

According to Carla Bass, "powerful writing is the life blood of an organization."
Word sculpting is a methodology developed by Carla Bass that focuses on strategizing the message and then using specific tools to chip away at the redundant words (the ones that hog space) and the bureaucratic blather to sculpt out a solid hard hitting message.
Every single writer is constrained by two things: 1) the readers time; and 2) space. The author who leverages time and space best wins!
Carla's Write to Influence! Tips

Don't put the horse before the cart. Identify what is the most important part of your message and raise that to the very top. Outline the journey you're trying to take the reader on.
If you are trying to extend your influence you have to explain [your principle thoughts] in very concise persuasive language, being cognizant of time and space.
Strategize and hone your message to make each word count.
Leave out the "Bureaucratic Blather:"

Don't use noun, after noun, after noun....
Don't smother the verb

Instead of "provide a demonstration" use "demonstrate"
Instead of "reduce the amount of time" use "expedite"
Instead of "conduct over-site" use "oversee"
Instead of "provide contribution" use "contribute"
Don't use words that "hog the space." Instead of using several words to convey one thought - go for the one!

Instead of "at the present time" try "presently"
Instead of "those who attend" try "attendees"
Instead of take you up on" try "accept"
Instead of "talk about" try "discuss"
Instead of "prior to that" try "previously"
Avoid redundancy by removing words already inferred in the sentence (e.g., "He was being surreptitiously sneaky" should be "He was being sneaky.")
Avoid useless words such as:.

There is / There are
Provide with
On a daily basis
In order to
Moving forward we will
Carla's Tips For Employees

To help employees take control of various situations (Job Interviews, Resumes, Performance Reviews), Carla offers the following tips:

Job Interviews:

Strategize your message beforehand. Before the interview think about and have ready 3 short messages you want to leave behind with your interviewer.

Performance Reviews (Where your employer asks for your written input):

Pretend you are writing about someone else - eliminate the ego.
Keep track of what you do day-to-day and the impact of those actions. Emphasis the "what happened" as a result of what you contributed.
Prioritize and triage. What were the effects of the things you did (on a day-to-day basis)? Did your actions impact other divisions, people, organizations? Did you set new benchmarks? The further the ripples go the higher up that information should be in the information you put forward to your supervisor.
Frame the story. Details make a huge difference (e.g., Instead of "Created Handbook" try "Created an 80 page handbook, distributed to over 500 employees and integral to the onboarding of 80 new employees.")
Keep track of any accolades or compliments from customers or co-workers.

Rank #20: Episode #26:The Workforce of the Future – Dr. Chip Espinoza

Podcast cover
Read more
Today’s special guest is Dr. Chip Espinoza, author and Dean of Strategy and Organization at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, CA. SAFFIRE LEGAL PC’s founder and principal attorney Teresa McQueen talks with Dr. Espinoza about his views on the impact Millennials will have in on the workforce of the future. This engaging conversation delves deep into the gaps between the four generations in the workforce right now and what the future workforce will look like once Millennials and Gen Z transition into their own dominate workforce rolls.

Workplace Perspective is a regular podcast series for employers and employees focusing on education, training, and the law to help organizations of all sizes develop and maintain successful employer / employee relationships.

"If you want to make a difference, master their way before you suggest your way." - Dr. Chip Espinoza
Highlights From This Week's Workplace Perspective:

How the Millennial generation will influence working in the future.
Why Millennials are the first generation who don't need an authority figure to access information.
“Demographic Metabolism" - the transition from when older generations are losing control of the workforce and a newer generation is taking over.
How having negative management experiences can damage or create a malevolent view of older generations in the workplace for Millennials.
Why some workplaces value experience over education and the kind of barriers that can create.
The importance of communication that is focused on readiness and preparedness with Millennials instead of expecting them to follow outdated work mentalities.
"Structural Lag" - outmoded social institutions failing to provide opportunities for its members who represent a growing group.
What does it mean "to work?”
How does the conversation about Millennials translate to other generations.
Millennials are more alike around the world than any generation before them
Dr. Chip Espinoza's Tips for Employers and Employees

Focus on building a relationship between employees and managers
Take the initiative to reach out to the employees to help them building experience
Help employees by establishing a career path for them with milestones they can accomplish
Provide frequent feedback and communication
Be careful about how you present a potential job
Be aware that if there's no room for advancement or the description doesn't match the actual daily work, there's less chance of retaining a Millennial workforce
Understand that young professionals want to make a difference in the company and contribute to the betterment of the  organization
Focus on providing opportunities that have meaning and allow for self expression

Rob Wilson
Today's guest is Rob Wilson, President of Employco USA . SAFFIRE LEGAL PC’s founder and principal attorney Teresa McQueen talks with Rob about his thoughts on the true cost of providing paid Paternity leave. Rob will discuss his perspective - based on the findings of a Danish research project - on how businesses can actually increase retention and recruitment through paid paternity related leave.

This show also offers a brief comment on the emerging COVID-19 pandemic as it continues to spread across the nation impacting our personal lives as well as our workplace relationships.
Workplace Perspective is a regular podcast series for employers and employees focusing on education, training, and the law to help organizations of all sizes develop and maintain successful employer / employee relationships.
"76% of men who take paid paternity leave return to work within 1 week." - Rob Wilson
Highlights From This Week's Workplace Perspective:

According to Rob Wilson, workplace culture heavily influences when/if men take paternity leave.
The overall goal in pushing for paid paternity leave is the desire to provide parents the opportunity to become involved in their children's lives from the earliest possible moment.
Positive impacts of improved recruitment and retention outweigh the perceived negative impacts associated with alleged financial burdens and downturns in productivity due to paid leave.
More and more large employers such as Starbucks, General Mills, and Lowe's Hardware, are taking the initiative and providing paid parental leave.
Rob's Tips for Those Interested In Increasing Paid Parental Leave

Advocate within your organization by bringing the issue of paid parental leave to the attention of top management or your Human Resources Team.
Contact your state and federal representative and encourage them to bring attention to the issue.
Join a local, state or national organization and lend your voice!

Ret. Col.

"The bigger the goal, the louder the [Saboteur] voice." - Julie McCoy

Highlights From This Week's Workplace Perspective:

The inner critic can be a positive force for improvement, but the Saboteur's voices is always going to try to trip us up.
The main thing that characterizes the voice of the Saboteur [is that] the Saboteur is a liar.
You'll never win an argument with the Saboteur, but you have within you positive voices that can talk back and help silence the inner critic's monologue.

Recognizing that the Saboteur is never going to fall silent is one of the first steps to turning down its volume.
Confront the Saboteur head-on and identify its message. Once you identify the message you can figure out what parts are true and which parts are false. Work with what's true and turn up the volume; lessening the impact of the Saboteur's false message.
Identify and work to bring forward the positive voices. Focus on the voice of positivity when the Saboteur raises its voice and tries to step to the front.
