28_Pushing the boundaries for your professional growth

The concept of scoping your week or month ahead of time simply means taking a ‘helicopter view’ of what you think the week or month ahead of you should be like. It helps you to obtain a high-level view of what should happen. This way you are able to define the broad strokes of your pursuits for that period of time. Scoping should be intentional, and it should follow a repeatable process. It is your opportunity to fill your future with the content you wish to draw out from it. Scoping helps you deliberately determine what sort of week, month, or year you will have. It begins with dreams which are then crystallised into goals and objectives and then progresses you towards action, determining what is to be done to achieve those goals and objectives. So let dive in.

Continuous mental activity can be exhausting. According to Carson Tate, founder and managing partner of the management consultancy Working Simply, ‘The brain is only 2 percent of the body total mass, but it consumes 20 percent of the body’s calories.’ It is significant to understand that your brain needs to refresh itself from time to time. We sometimes feel like we will be more productive if we just go on firing on all cylinders, but it has been proven that the law of diminishing returns sets in at some stage if we continue with unbroken mental activity. 24_Time to refresh-Productivity series

In this episode we look at another philosophy of productivity that I called - Inner calmness Over the years, I have concluded that the calmer a person is internally, the more control that individual will have over his or her energy, and as such the more directed they will be in their efforts to get things done. Worry, anxiety, and inner turmoil rob the individual of their energy and productivity; they stifle creativity and lower productivity levels. With worry and anxiety, it is difficult to focus on the task at hand and as such every small task looks like a mountain. It is difficult to view things with the correct perspective with inner worries. It multiplies your personal power when you maintain inner calmness in the face of difficult challenges.

Drucker called ‘the era of the three C’s – accelerated change, overwhelming complexity and unprecedented competition’. The rate of change is so demanding that we need to quickly adapt and learn new skills and perform at our best, all at the same time. These changes mean that time to market for our goods and services will have to be faster than the competition if the business will survive. As such the demands on both entrepreneurs and professionals alike are on the rise. Parents, students, families all have to find ways to achieve more with less time. The demands on most people today are constantly on the increase. The need to deliver on the family, business, professional, relationship and social fronts could often introduce a heightened level of stress. This stress often makes the individual less productive. Then you have emails that need to be responded to urgently, telephone calls, Twitter, Facebook and all the other digital and social media that are constantly pulling us and calling for our attention. This series is to help you accomplish more with less time. In this first episode I offer you core principles to first of all take control of your mind and attitude, and then align your actions with what is most important to you.

So, here we will focus on answering the question “What are my skill gaps?” Making an effective transition from your current role to the next one will require you to carry out a skills audit. This is where you are looking to see what gaps exist between your current skills and the dream career you are hoping to go for. You carry out a skills audit on what skills you currently have that you can port into the new area you want to explore. This is what Carl Newport refers to as your career capital. The more of your current skills and experience that you can repurpose into your new direction, the better aligned you are going to be in relation to your desired career. In this framework, we will work through the four quadrants for transformation, each quadrant driven by a major question. First it bears repeating that questions are powerful in engaging life change and transformation at any level. In this episode we will start a new series on how to switch your career successfully. Essentially, we want to look at the concept of pivoting your career strategically from your current or previous positions to a new one. Truth be told, most people will have to change career a couple of times in their career journey. The economy and the changes around us make it a necessity to prepare for career change. According to Peter F. Drucker “For most of us, we will have to learn to manage ourselves. We will have to place ourselves where we can make the most contribution. And we will have to stay mentally alert and engaged during the 50-year working life, which means knowing how and when to change the work we do.” Not sure where you are at, but in recent times people have had been furloughed and many are trying to get back to work. It may have been very trying and challenging. My first question to you is: “What is informing your decision to change your career? Why are you transitioning into another career?” It could be that you have just lost your job and feel it might be a good time to switch career to what you have always wanted to do.  You might be here because you feel your current job does not truly give you what you want. You might feel stuck on your current job not knowing what to do, or you are looking to increase your income and believe changing your career will be a way to achieve that. Whatever your reason or reasons might be, I want to congratulate you for making the decision to take the driver’s seat of your own career. So, let's dive in as we consider the tools, tips, and insights that you can put to work immediately for significant progress on your career switch goals.
