Everyone knows that public media stations, be they radio, cable, or broadcast television, has to have fund drives.  This is a comedy routine done in April of 2008 as part of a fund drive for a local low power FM radio station.  It was during my show, Audio Theater, and my guest was Vadalia VanDam who does most of her cooking on a wooden bench, hence "The Bench Chef"... Having a cooking show on the radio during a fund drive?  Yes.  Did it work? Not that much $ raised,  but we thought it was funny so here it is. The WSCA Audio Theater Players re-created this Columbia Workshop production  of Jan 8, 1938  - Part 1 and March 5, 1938 - Part 2 - written by Frederick Gilsdorf nd Pauline Gibson   ..  An amusing ghost story told from the point of ghosts!   Directed by Nila Mack with music by Bernard Herriman.  The re-creation was recorded at WSCA studios in Portsmouth, NH on March 24, 2007.  By the way, Part 2 of the original airing... March of 1938 ... had a technical advancement used for the first time... that of a voice filter microphone, like would be used to make a voice sound as if it were on the phone... here it is used when live people interact with ghosts, when it is just ghosts interacting with one another, the sound is normal. Cast credits are heard at the end of the recording.  This track lives in the "Halloween" playlist

Over 13 years as the host of an Audio Theater radio show, I also produced/directed/edited over 70 re-creations of original shows starring local actors.  These were all aired on WSCA radio in Portsmouth, NH ... some were performed live, most pre-recorded. Retired Biology_Environmental Science educator... passion for old time radio... protecting the environment, civil rights, and audio/video editing for local radio and TV station  production.  Produced 60+ OTR re-enactments with local actors. 13 years as radio host for "Audio Theater". Currently co-host a show on local cable TV called "Living and Learning with Disabilities" and produce a storytelling program called "True Tales Live" which is found on Soundcloud and Itunes.

This is a re-creation of the "Lights Out" broadcast from July 13, 1946 entitled "Coffin in Studio B" - As host of an Audio Theater program on a local low power fm station for a little over 13 years, I often gathered local folks to re-create old radio shows.  This is one of those shows that was broadcast live from our studio on July 22, 2008.  Starring in this production are James Darling, James Sears, Chuck Curtis, Dan Comly, and Brian Gregg.  Sound Effects by Melanie Lovering.  Yours truly was the director/editor.  For a local group of Audio Theater enthusiasts, I think this sounded very professional.  I hope you will agree. Lights Out - Coffin In Studio B - Re-Creation of a July 13, 1946 CBS Radio Broadcast - Thriller

The radio adaptation of the Oscar-winning 1951 film "African Queen" starring Humphrey Bogart and Kathryn Hepburn.  Bogart re-creates his Best Actor Award character, Charlie Allnut... captain of the African Queen and Greer Garson plays the role of Rose Sayer, the missionary (played in the film by Katharine Hepburn.  This is a well-done radio adaptation of a terrific movie.  This will be found in the "Drama-Adventure" Playlist.

A woman’s murderous nightmare is explained away by her husband’s dream analysis, from hamburgers to their anniversary. But once she falls asleep, the phone rings… and then the "fun" begins! 50 episodes were produced.  Ten shows were syndicated and rerun on Mutual Radio Network in 1950.   These shows often had a supernatural twist to them. Director was Anton M. Leder... a brilliant director of horror and suspense shows.  Raymond Morgan is the announcer.  Charles Paul is the organist, who is very effective in creating the right mood at the right time!  Many shows used organists because it was cheaper to hire an organist and an orchestra...  and even saved money on sound effects as the organ could create so many emotions, especially if the organist was as talented as Charles Paul was....  This show will be stored in the playlist "Murder at Midnight"

Intro to the skit includes a detailed history of Fanny Brice and her career... also included is my experience with teaching groups of 7 to 12 year-olds about the Golden Age of Radio during a summer camp between 2006-2011.  The students wrote and produced their own radio show with sound effects and music.. and it was broadcast on a local station.  One of the characters I used to motivate the was Fanny Brice as Baby Snooks...  In this skit from the Maxwell House Coffee time in 1941, Daddy is taking Snooks and her little brother Robespierre to have their photographs taken by a professional photographer! Two back-to-back episodes of "Superman" from 1940. "Clark Kent is Captured by the Wolfe" and "Kent is Imprisoned" - February 19th and 21st respectively in 1940. The serial came to radio as a syndicated show on New York City's WOR on February 12, 1940. On Mutual, it was broadcast from August 31, 1942, to February 4, 1949, as a 15-minute serial, running three or, usually, five times a week. From February 7 to June 24, 1949, it ran as a three times a week half-hour show. The series shifted to ABC Saturday evenings on October 29, 1949, and then returned to afternoons twice a week on June 5, 1950, continuing on ABC until March 1, 1951. In all, 2,088 original episodes of The Adventures of Superman aired on American radio.  Though it was considered a juvenile adventure series, parents listened as well... television and films have kept Superman going for 80 years!  This track will be house in the "Superman" Playlist

Boston Blackie

Boston Blackie was a fictional character created by Jack Boyle in a short story written in 1914! The story attracted a lot of attention and a silent movie was made built around this crime-solving detective. Then there were 14 "talkies" produced... then a radio show.  Finally in 1944 "Boston Blackie" made it as a summer replacement show for Amos and Andy... and then it got its own show that ran from April 1945 to October of 1950... starring Richard Kollmar as Blackie.  The summer replacement in 1944 starred Chester Morris.  Good stories... lots of organ music (it was cheaper than an orchestra and less work and cost then a lot of sound effects guys) ... Yet another Five Minute Mystery is waiting to be solved. A crime is about to be committed and you have only a few minutes (five to be exact) to solve the crime. Now of course you would not know if you solved it correctly unless someone told you you did. Well, you are in luck because the announcer will give you a few moments to see if you solved the crime correctly before the criminal is identified. See if you can out sleuth the sleuths! There is "A Clue in the Hand" but who was murdered, how and why? Good luck. More mysteries in the "Five Minute Mystery" Playlist. These shows were often used by local radio stations as "fillers" ... when a schedule had 4 or 5 extra minutes with no content to air, out came a "Five Minute Mystery" They also used the long organ breaks to make announcements about local radio contests or some other promotion that a station might be offering. I must admit, I take a little dramatic license with the organ music sections... and now for something different...

Eve Arden is Our Miss Brooks, the English teacher at Madison High School where Mr. Conklin (Gale Gordon) is the Principal.  Mrs. Davis is Miss Brooks landlady, Walter Denton (RIchard Crenna) is one of her students, Harriet Conklin is Mr. Conklin's daughter and Walter's heartthrob.  Mr. Boynton, the Biology teacher (Jeff Chandler) is the object of Miss Brooks' affection, but he is clueless, but he does love his frogs!  It all leads to a very funny episode of one of yours truly favorite sitcoms on radio and television.
