301 Escaping The Grind

Welcome to Season 3 of Roleplay Rescue! Today we take a look at the meaning and importance of Escapism. We learn that we are healthier when we seek escapes that are focused on self-expansion rather than self-suppression. Through a brief glance at modern psychology, we find out how roleplaying games allow us to do do cool stuff AND become friends with people with whom we discover how to work with collaboratively. If that isn’t a cool reason to get back to the table, I don’t know what is. Dungeon Master's Diary #21: Sci-Fi Missions and Satanic Accusations

This was the week in which I prepped for the Traveller "High and Dry" scenario, talked to the school club kids about one-shots, figured out how I would run a science-fiction Open Table, and found out that the Satanic Panic is back. It's an emotional roller-coaster made all the better by call-ins from ShandyAndy, Jason Connerley, and Colin Spikepit. Enter at your own risk! Game on. 419 GM's Journal 28-09-19

This will be the last GM's Journal of Season 4. It's the penultimate episode of the series too, as I aim to release 420 next Saturday and then take a break until mid-October, when school breaks for two weeks holiday. This episode features the third instalment of call-ins regarding Sleep Deprivation. It also covers my descent into illness and is therefore not entirely positive. Still, there's plenty to chew over and I hope you'll be generous with your call-ins in response. Game on! 502 Talking GURPS With Douglas Cole

First of a couple of interviews I've managed to record over the past week or so, this one with Doug Cole of Gaming Ballistic is on the topic of why GURPS is a game worth looking at and what the Dungeon Fantasy RPG offers the curious onlooker. Doug creates licensed products for both the DFRPG and The Fantasy Trip, giving us an excellent insight into the world of gaming with 3d6 that is hard to get from the outside. Many thanks to Doug for coming back for a second chat! Oh, and big thanks to Spencer (aka Free Thrall) for the rather... interesting call-in that leads the episode. Dungeon Master's Diary #1

The Dungeon Master's Diary is born! Fans of the old GM's Journal will, I hope, be pleased to know that I aim to continue sharing my personal audio diary. I’m re-branding it as the Dungeon Master’s Diary - DM’s Diary for short - because I’m a fantasy roleplayer right now and also because I love that old terminology: I am the Dungeon Master. At least, I am around here. DM’s Diary will always be pretty much an uncut, roughly edited mess hashed together in a hurry. It’ll also be honest and include some serious ups and downs. I warn you now, listen to the DM’s Diary at your own risk! 204 Getting Started Solo

What if you can’t find any players or a game to join? Is it possible to roleplay on your own? In this episode, we explore the slightly misunderstood world of solo roleplaying. I take you through the reasons behind solo play, even as far back as the 1970s and the hey-day of D&D. From there, we explore the Mythic RPG and the many approaches to solo roleplaying in a practical sense. By the end, I hope to convince you that solo RPG play is a good and sensible option. Talking To Steve Jackson

At the tail end of Season 5, I invited listeners to help hit the 30-Patron Goal on Patreon and offered, as a reward, to approach and invite a Tabletop Roleplaying Luminary onto the show for an interview. Today's guest is Steve Jackson, the founder and President of Steve Jackson Games, who was the first and loudest request from the Patrons. Well-known games he created include OGRE, The Fantasy Trip, Car Wars, GURPS, and Munchkin. Steve Jackson Games is now 40 years old but its founder remains a dedicated SF reader and fan, and enjoys attending both gaming and SF conventions.  Manys thanks to Steve Jackson - it was a genuine honour! Solo Journal #SAMM Ep1

It's Solo A Module Month and, following the last episode on getting into solo play, I thought I would take part. In short, Spencer Salyer from the Lone Wolf Roleplaying group on MeWe (formerly on G+) has set the guys there the challenge to solo play a module sometime during March 2019. I got the itch to play my all-time favourite SF RPG just before #SoloAModule was announced and decided to throw my lot in to do a very special blast from the past. This is a very rough intro to my plan for March in which I learn to play the game I've chosen. Hope it's worth a listen.

601 Back To The Mic

Roleplay Rescue Season 6 goes off half-cocked as I get back to the mic. In the face of the Covid-19 lock-down, not only here in the UK but across the world, I've decided to stop feeling sorry for myself, stop making excuses for not being creative, and put something out. 518 The Fear And Freedom Of Improvisation With Andy Goodman

Following on from recent thoughts on questions surrounding the role of story and narrative in tabletop roleplaying games, I hopped online to chat with fellow Anchor podcaster, Andy Goodman from Expedition to The Grizzley Peaks. We had a fairly unstructured natter about the role of emergent play, improvisation, and prepared narrative structure in gaming. It was a very illuminating conversation. Thanks to the call-in callers: Jason, Mr Henchman, and Rui - you are amazing and I am, as ever, deeply grateful for your thoughts. Especial thanks to Frank T for editing this interview and saving me  the embarrassment of not having an episode this week. Thank you! 404 Talking Random Tables With Dave Aldridge

A few weeks ago, I started listening to Dave's dpercentile podcast - albeit I was VERY late to the party - and in episode 3, he spoke about the value of GMs using random table to prep. Inspired by this episode, I contacted Dave and arranged to chat more about this topic and explore the value of random tables for the returning gamer. Although there were technical problems, we managed to have a fascinating conversation that I couldn't resist sharing with you all. Enjoy! Bonus: 10 Things From Arduin With Gabriel Roark

A month ago, I hopped onto MeWe and asked Gabriel Roark if he'd be up for organising another interview to discuss the ten things we'd import from Arduin into our own campaigns. Gabriel is someone who plays in Arduin and is seeking to rediscover the realm created by the legendary David Hargrave. We had a two-hour chat using Anchor and, unfortunately, the recording was a) patchy, and b) cut off too early, mid-sentence. Nonetheless, the conversation was highly productive for me and I wanted to share it. After 6 hours of editing, here it is - the monstrous (but edited) 1.5 hour long chat with Gabriel. I hope someone out there finds it half as useful as I did! Game on!

108 Curse of The Flaky GM

What if the reason your gaming group is collapsing is because the Game Master keeps cancelling the sessions? In this final episode of Series 1, we talk about the barriers that stop a Game Master from getting a regular game off the ground and the strategies that I am starting to use to correct this problem.  We learn about the Holy Trinity of game decisions that I believe lie at the heart of every successful roleplaying campaign.  We finish by talking through the requirements for an Open Table and I share a worked example. I also discuss strategies for prepping and some of the systems that you can rely on to succeed. 515 Using RPGs In Education With Dave Aldridge

This one's a rather fabulous chat I had with fellow Anchorite podcaster, Dave Aldridge about the issues around using RPGs in education. He's a lecturer at a prestigious British university and I'm a classroom teacher in a mainstream UK high school. It seems Dave has some misgivings about using RPGs in the educational setting which led me to engage him in a deeper conversation about those issues. It's a deep, philosophical, and ever-so-slightly technical chat and I sincerely hope we managed to maintain an accessible level of educational jargon. I hope you find it useful. Thanks must go to the fantastic call-ins from Cory, Rui, and Andy G that lead the show - skip to about 10 minutes in if you want to avoid those.
