Joining us for Episode 53 of The Music Chat Podcast is Mike Mattison.  During the intro to this episode, you were listening to the song “Deadbeat” from Mike’s latest album Afterglow.  I caught up with Mike a few weeks ago, before things started getting crazy in the world and particularly in the world of live music. Rhymefest.  The song features appearances by Black Thought of The Roots and Raheem DeVaughn, and is produced by Symbolyc One (S1).  This song is part of Rhymefest’s upcoming project, which includes a book entitled Love Lessons Pt. 1, and an album entitled Love Lessons Pt. 2.     For those of you not familiar with our guest, he has accomplished much, including two Grammy Awards  - one as co-writer for Jesus Walks with Kanye West and the other as co-writer for the song Glory with Common and John Legend (which also landed him an Academy Award).  He has released solo albums as a hip hop artist, been the subject of a documentary about his life (In My Father’s House), and acted in a feature film directed by Emilio Estevez (The Public). In light of the recent 50th Anniversary of The Allman Brothers Band, I have put together a tribute to Duane Allman.  This is the first episode of The Music Chat Podcast that has not included a guest.  While this was a new challenge, my love for Duane as a musician provided the motivation for me to compile this special episode. During this episode, we discuss Duane's impressive catalog and his impact on music.  Duane put together an awesome list of musical accomplishments for a musician that was with us for such a short period of time.   I hope you all enjoy this episode, it was truly a labor of love for me. As I mention towards the end of the discussion, this episode of The Music Chat Podcast is dedicated to the memory of Jenny Pagliaro of the band Roses and Cigarettes.  Jenny was a previous guest of the podcast, and recently passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.  She made an impact on many people with her music, and even though we only talked one time for the podcast, it was very clear to me how much she loved what she did as a vocalist and musician.

For Episode 30, we are joined by multi-talented guitarist and composer Gretchen Menn.  Gretchen is the guitarist for Zepparella and has composed and created two albums of solo material (Hale Souls and Abandon All Hope) as well.  Additionally, she devotes time to producing educational material for guitar workshops, writing articles focused on the guitar, and creating coursework for music instruction platform Jamplay. During this episode, Gretchen shares an abundance of stories from her background and helpful ideas as well for anyone pursuing a career in music (or really any self-directed profession).  She has a positive, optimistic, and driven approach to everything she does as you will hear from our conversation. Our guest for Episode 40 is slide guitar master Rick Vito.  Rick has had an incredible journey as a musician, from seeing Jimi Hendrix live before he became an international phenomenon, to playing with John Mayall and Albert Collins in the 1970s, to joining the bands of Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Bob Seger, and Fleetwood Mac over the following years.  Along the way he has been responsible for some iconic guitar work: the slide guitar in Bob Seger’s “Like a Rock” and the riff in Jackson Browne’s “Somebody’s Baby” are both Rick’s creations. Rick has also released 10 studio albums as a solo artist.      It was enormously gratifying to get to speak with Rick about his accomplishments as a musician, and to find out he was a down-to-earth, humble guy who appreciates the opportunities he has had to make music a career.
