Ride the Wave – Mental Health | POW10

In this episode, we visit with Mary Steinmann and discuss mental health challenges with our children, best practices while parenting a child or teen that is struggling, and tips on how to have compassion for yourself as a parent through it all. About the Guest:●       Dr. Mary Steinmann is a triple-board certified physician in pediatrics, adult psychiatry, and child and adolescent psychiatry. She is an Associate Professor at the Huntsman Mental Health Institute and University of Utah School of Medicine. She has a special clinical interest in the intersection and overlap of medical and mental health and providing care to youth and families in a domain that is often stigmatized, misunderstood, and underserved. ●       Dr. Steinmann is also passionate about medical education and mentoring future colleagues. She teaches behavioral neuroscience and psychiatry for medical students and physician assistant students, and serves on several national committees to improve education in psychiatry. She feels extremely privileged to be able to help future generations explore their paths, cope with adversity and challenge, and develop resiliency. She has, through her own journey as a busy academic physician, wife, and twin mom, discovered the importance of compassion and keeping one’s emotional cup full (enough) in maintaining humanism in relationships and interactions. In her personal life, Dr. Steinmann refills her emotional cup by SCUBA diving, Peloton cycling, cooking, wine tasting, and camping. ●       The views expressed by Dr. Steinmann are based on her own opinions and experiences, and not reflective of her employer. She has no financial disclosures of interest.  ●       Content warning: This topic addresses mental health and themes of self-harm, aggression, and suicide. If you or a loved one are struggling, please reach out for support.●       Emergency: 9-1-1 or go to nearest Emergency Department●       National Suicide Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK●       Local mental health organization or crisis center●       National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI): www.nami.org About the Host:DeAnna Robbins - is a lover of learning and connecting with REAL people.
