The Triangle Factory Fire Project

Audio Drama. On Saturday, March 25, 1911, just at the close of day, a fire breaks out at the Triangle Waist Company in New York City. Housed on the upper floors of the Ashe Building off Washington Square, it is one of the city's largest garment factories. In a matter of minutes the lives of 146 workers, mostly young immigrant women, are lost as the fire rips through the building. Based on the acclaimed Off-Broadway play, THE TRIANGLE FACTORY FIRE PROJECT tells the story of one of New York City's most devastating fires and one of history's most important pivotal moments. Told through first person accounts, period ephemera, and trial transcripts, this special audio version has been designed to bring the play and the event to the listener in vivid and dramatic life. Produced for Hear Play Audio Theatre by Daryl Bornstein and Scott Alan Evans. If you enjoy this, please consider supporting our work. Go to: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/hearpl Thank you!

Episode 1: The Strike (1909). The Fire (1911)

HEAR PLAY Audio Theatre's premiere offering: THE TRIANGLE FACTORY FIRE PROJECT by Christopher Piehler & Scott Alan EvansEPISODE 1 The Strike (1909).  The Fire (1911)The Triangle Waist Company was one of New York City’s largest garment factories of its day.  Located in the ten story Ashe Building just off Washington Square in downtown Manhattan, Triangle employed over 500 workers, many of them immigrants from Eastern Europe, Russia, and Italy.  These workers, mostly young women, toiled fourteen-hour days making a popular lady’s garment: the shirtwaist.  On Saturday, March 25, 1911, just as the closing bell is about to ring at 4:45PM, a cigarette is tossed into a bin of fabric scraps on the eighth floor.  Despite desperate efforts, flames rapidly sweep through the eighth, ninth, and tenth floors of the loft building — the three floors the Triangle Waist Company inhabits.THE TRIANGLE FACTORY FIRE PROJECT uses eyewitness accounts, court transcripts and other archival material to create a dramatic moment-by-moment account of this historic fire and the social upheaval that followed.  It culminates in the manslaughter trial of the owners, Isaac Harris and Max Blanck, the repercussions of which shaped social, political, and economic policies for decades to come. THE ARTISTS:JEREMY BECK, NORA CHESTER, FRANCESCA DI MAURO, JEFFREY C.
