This is an all new design with an edge to edge OLED screen, no home button and Face ID in in stead of Touch ID. The phone has glass on both the front and back to support wireless charging. It is a tiny bit larger than the iPhone 8 but smaller than the plus phones. It feels fabulous in the hand.

Even though the phone feels and operates like an iPhone, no home button means that there are some new gestures and some new habits to get into when using this phone. The Tech Doctors explore all of these changes in detail.

The Tech Doctors are pleased that Apple has, once again, made this phone completely VoiceOver accessible right out of the box. Both Tech Doctors ran into some setup glitches which they describe in the podcast.

Being early adopters who love new technology, the Tech Doctors are thrilled with the new iPhone X. Apple is selling seven models of the iPhone in addition to the iPhone X. There is something there for everyone and they are all excellent phones. You just have to figure out which one is right for you.

In this series of Tech Doctor podcasts, Robert Carter sits down with Lisa Salinger to explore the new and exciting world of low-cost refreshable Braille technology.

In this podcast, Lisa and Robert explain how electronic Braille technology remained static for nearly 40 years. Within the last few years, however, some new and less expensive technology designed to display electronic Braille has been developed.

Robert and Lisa express their excitement with how the cost of refreshable Braille is coming down. This means that electronic Braille is available to more people than ever before.

Lisa and Robert will begin examining three specific low-cost Braille displays in part two, three and four of this series.

Robert and Lisa explain that the company that Lisa works for called
Mystic Access
Has developed audio tutorials on the three Braille displays that we will be discussing. These tutorials are an excellent way to learn about these devices.

Lisa and Robert highlight the idea that it is critical that each person figures out through hands on experience, studying the user manuals or listening to these tutorials which Braille display will best meet their needs. Examining the Victor Reader Trek

In this podcasts, the Tech Doctors sit down with Deborah Kendrick to examine the
Victor Reader Trek
From Humanware.

Be sure to read Deborah’s
Review of the Trek
In the May 2018 AccessWorld Magazine from The American Foundation for the Blind.

The Trek which is about the same size as the Victor Reader Stream contains all of the features of the Stream as well as a very easy-to-use but quite sophisticated GPS-based orientation system. It comes with the maps already installed and aside from the fact that it takes awhile for the GPS to get its first satellite fix, getting going with GPS couldn’t be easier.

Humanware stuck to its tried and true VR Stream interface for both reading and navigation. Anybody who has used a Stream will feel very at home with this product.

The Trek is a fabulous alternative for anyone who is not comfortable with a touch-screen device like the iPhone. Some will even want it as a second device even if they primarily use a smartphone for reading, podcasts listening, internet radio and GPS orientation. The Trek handles all of these very well. Downloads are slower than they are on the iPhone but they are done in the background and don’t seem to interfere with whatever else the Trek is doing.

Robert and Deborah are both impressed with how much fun the Trek is to use. Allison is thinking that she will stick with her phone for now.

The Tech Doctors hope you enjoy this discussion and they thank Deborah for sharing her expertise with all of us.
