  1. Review your 2016 goals and recommit to them. If you haven’t already downloaded our free goals worksheet, click the image to download the worksheet I use.
  2. Commit to a morning routine. Personally, I wake up early and meditate, read affirmations, visualize the life I want, read ten pages in a book, journal, and finally, exercise for 30-45 minutes.
  3. Take at least one day off per week to disconnect, recharge and spend time with family.
  4. Call 5 people up and ask them to coffee or lunch.
  5. Commit to educating and investing in yourself. Some of the things that I do are: listen to audiobooks, read business related books, listen to podcasts, and attend seminars, conferences, and CLE’s.

Josh’s Inspirational Quote

“The Journey is the reward.” – Steve Jobs

Josh’s big failure…

His biggest failure was getting fired from his law firm job.  Other, ancillary failures include spending thousands and thousands of dollars on technology, software and virtual assistants that didn’t work for his law firm when he was first starting out.

Josh knew everything was going to be ok when…

His first “a-ha” moment was when he decided to niche himself with franchise law.  His next “a-ha” moment was when he finally started to tie in his online and offline marketing efforts with his franchising niche.

Online marketing + offline marketing + niche practice = Success

What held Josh back from starting a law firm?

The fear of failure.

What was the best business advice Josh ever received?

When his Dad told him that the worst thing that could happen if he started his own firm is that if he failed, he could just go back to working at “another crappy law firm.”

What is one personal habit that contributes to Josh’s success?

He is tenacious and inquisitive.  He is also open to meeting and talking to other people.  Being interested in other people has been a huge part of his success.

What are one or two internet tools and resource Josh recommends?

There are two tools that Josh loves, the first is Ruby Receptionists.  The second is SalesForce, which he uses for marketing and case management.

What book does Josh recommend to anyone starting a law firm?

Josh loves the E-Myth Revisited, by Michael Gerber.  He previously interviewed Mr. Gerber on his own franchising podcast.

What would Josh do if he had to start over from scratch?

The first thing Josh would do is go out and purchase a URL from GoDaddy and set up a blog in a practice area that he was interested in. With the remainder of the money, he would find some key players in his geographic area, take them to coffee or lunch, and try to leverage what those people are doing in the community to help himself get introduced to more people.

Things to consider with your Header Image

Facebook has a lot going on in their header space now.  The biggest issue here is making sure that the text in your header image is not covered up by the default text from your Facebook page.

Stats to the right of your header

As you can see in the image above, in the latest Facebook redesign, your statistics for the past week are shown to the right of your header image.  Included in this sidebar are the following:

  • New Page Likes
  • Total post reach
  • Unread messages and notifications (notifications includes clicks, likes, shares and comments for each of your posts)

Some Facebook experts say that you should track this information in an excel spreadsheet or Google Docs page.  I think this is a good idea if you are making a significant effort to increase the reach of your law firm’s Facebook page.  However, if you are like me and just a “casual” Facebook user – I just like to check my stats once a week.

How to manage your Facebook Tabs

Beneath your header image you will see a list of tabs.  Mine includes my Timeline, an About page, Photos, Reviews, and the “More”.  In the old layout, these were a series of boxes that went across the top of your page previously.  When you click on these tabs, you will be redirected to any number of custom apps within your Facebook Page. You can change the order of your tabs to reposition them if you would like.  Simply click on the “More” button, then click on “manage tabs” as shown below.

Most Facebook coaches do not spend too much time on tabs, in part because not too many Facebook users will ever even see your Facebook pages.  Instead, the majority of your fans and Facebook users in general, will interact with your content through their news feed.

Where to find your Scheduled Posts

One of my favorite things about Facebook, (as compared to Google+), is the ability to schedule your posts in advance.  However, I always had a hard time finding my posts after I had scheduled them for publication. Not anymore. In the new Facebook layout, there is a notification box directly below the box for you to enter a status update that tells you how many scheduled posts you have, and when the next post is scheduled to go live.  In addition, you can use this box to go into each scheduled post and edit, delete or modify the post as necessary.

The About Section

A little known secret about the new Facebook redesign is that you can use the “About” section, which falls in the left hand sidebar of your page, to highlight a lead generation magnet that you use in your law practice.  So for example, you can use this section to highlight a free webinar, e-book, or even a free video series as I have done with Legal Marketing Made Easy.  See below:

You can also include a link to your law firm’s website.  However, if you set up your Facebook page as a local business, this option will not be available.  (It took me awhile to figure that out).

Other Pages to Watch

I’m really excited about this cool new feature in Facebook.  It’s found within the insights tab at the top of your page and is called “Pages to Watch.”  This tool gives you the opportunity to see what tools and strategies are working for other Facebook Pages that may also attract your idea client.  So, for example, if you have a law firm in your market that is really killing it with their Facebook page (lots of likes and interaction from their fans), then you may want to “watch” that page to get some ideas about different things you can do to increase likes and engagement on your own law firm’s page. To add a page that you want to watch, simply click on Insights > Overview > Pages to Watch and click the big “Add Pages” button to manually add the pages you want to watch.

After you have decided on some pages to watch, you can then click on Insights > Posts > Top Posts from Pages You Watch to see which posts from the previous week were the most engaging. So for example, if you look below, you will see that Jacob Sapochnick did a Facebook “chat” this week where he answered immigration questions on his law firm’s Facebook page this past week.  This one post engaged with 835 people when I took the screenshot (now up to 1.2K people), with 33 comments!  This is a great example of a takeaway that you can use in your own law practice to really engage with your “fans” on Facebook.

When you add a Page to watch, the admin of that page will be notified that their page has been added, but they won’t be able to see who added it (just an FYI in case you were wondering).

In today’s episode, I wanted to reflect on some of the personal struggles I had to deal with last month in the wake of my Mom’s passing. As a solo attorney, dealing with a major life event such as the death of a loved one, divorce, prolonged illness or any number of other issues can have a huge impact on your life and your livelihood.

Today I will be discussing how I dealt with the loss of my mother from the perspective of a law firm owner, and how you can prepare yourself, now, for one of these horrible and unexpected life events.

Another resource to consider: 10 Benefits of Moving to a Paperless Law Office

In this particular episode, you will learn:

Eight steps you can take to prepare yourself for the unexpected, including:

  1. Be Prepared. Have some money in savings to draw on when the unexpected happens.
  2. Keep everyone in the loop (clients, opposing attorneys, the courts, etc.). Cancel or reschedule appointments as appropriate.
  3. Recurring Revenue. Start thinking about how you can bring a subscription model into your law practice to even out cash flows when times get tough.
  4. Become location independent. If you don’t already have access to your law practice remotely, start thinking about how you can put systems in place that allow you to continue to practice from anywhere on Earth.
  5. Think of your law practice as a business that exists without you. Start to build a practice that works when you aren’t there – this is the essence of a true business.
  6. What if you don’t have enough cash?  If you don’t have enough cash flow to pay everything, put off the non-essential bills for a couple of weeks. Contact your vendors and let them know what is going on.
  7. When the dust settles… Re-evaluate your practice and your systems. Revisit your goals and make sure you stay on track. This experience can completely unravel some attorneys – some may decide it is time to close up shop (and that may be the best option for may lawyers), but others will thrive in the wake of this experience.
  8. Take as much time as you need. The cases and clients will still be there when you get through this. Make sure you take the time you need to recover mentally or to be with loved ones.

Items Mentioned in the Podcast

In this particular episode, you will learn:

6 Systems you need to put into place in your law practice as soon as you possibly can, including:

  1. Marketing and Lead Generation System. How are you getting qualified prospects to pick up the phone and call you? After they call, how do convert them into clients? You should have systems in place for referral marketing, blogging and social media, and paid advertising (both on and offline).
  2. Onboarding and Client Service System. What are you going to do once you turn someone from a prospect into a client? How do you handle this? Some of the things that we do include: properly tagging the contact in Infusionsoft, opening a new client file, following up with regular emails, set the client up with a case portal, etc.
  3. Client Management System. What are you doing to make sure that you aren’t losing track of clients and files? You should have a system in place to deal with this.
  4. Email and Telephone Management. If not handled properly, email and the phones can completely overwhelm you. I recommend batching your email once or twice a day, and not taking any unscheduled phone calls.
  5. Post Engagement System. How do you stay in contact with former clients? Some ideas include sending out a weekly email with educational and newsworthy information, and also sending out a monthly hard copy newsletter via the US Mail.
  6. Running the Business System. How do you manage the other five systems? How do you keep track of the numbers? How do you know how many prospects are turning into clients? These are all important systems that you must start to implement, preferably through weekly meetings with your staff.

To the extent you can automate some of these systems (using a program like Infusionsoft), then I recommend you do so. This will keep things from falling through the cracks.

In this particular episode, you will learn how to set SMART goals for your law practice:

SMART goals are goals that include the following characteristics:

  1. Specific. You are much more likely to achieve a specific goal than a general goal. To be specific, a goal must answer the 6 “W” questions: Who, What, Where, When, Which and Why.
  2. Measurable. A measurable goal is one that lets you know whether you accomplished it. It’s not subjective. When you hit a measurable goal, you can confidently cross it off your list.
  3. Attainable. Not all goals are attainable initially. But as you start to work towards them, you gain confidence in knowing that they can be reached.
  4. Realistic. A realistic goal must be one that represents and objective that you are both willing and able to work towards. If you don’t want to work towards a goal, it is not a realistic goal.
  5. Time-Based. You must set a time limit on a goal to create a sense of urgency to complete it. By doing so, your unconscious mind will begin working towards it.

In this week’s episode, I talk about the marketing mix of my new law practice, and how I’m using 3 specific strategies on a daily basis to hit my marketing goals.

As most of you are aware, I’m in the process of transitioning my law practice from a family law practice to an intellectual property and brand protection practice. After 10 years of practicing family law, this is no small task.

Instagram is an emerging platform to build brand recognition, and it’s one that many lawyers are simply ignoring. If you don’t already have any account, sign up for one today and make sure to follow my law firm @hawthornlaw to see how we are using this platform to launch a new practice area in my firm. In today’s episode, I discuss how you can build a successful law practice without working yourself to death.  I’m slightly under the weather this week and have been fighting off a nasty cough, so rather than edit out all my coughs, I decided to dig into the archives to find a pretty popular show to share with you a second time.

Most solos find themselves in a constant struggle balancing the building of a law practice with their personal lives.  They hang their shingle get some clients, and then the work never stops.  Before you know it, you are up at the crack of dawn to work on an all-consuming law practice, losing time with family, and staying at the office till 9, 10, 11 o’clock at night.  That’s no way to live.

“Money is an echo of value. It’s the thunder to Value’s Lightning.”

Today’s guest is Bob Burg.  In the past year since I started this podcast, all of my guests to date have been lawyers that are unique in the manner in which they market themselves, and as a result have grown tremendously successful solo and/or small firm practices.  Today’s podcast is a little bit different.  Bob is not a lawyer – he is a business speaker, coach and author.  He is someone that I look up to and admire greatly, not only because he has been so successful, but because of the way that he treats people and the manner in which he has achieved his success.

I chose to have Bob on for my 50th episode because I literally built my first law practice using the techniques he discusses in his book, Endless Referrals.  As a result, I couldn’t think of anyone better to have on the show.

Bob is a truly caring and genuine human being.  This interview was a lot of fun, I hope you enjoy it.

Bob’s Inspirational Quote

Bob had two inspirational quotes:

“Money is an echo of value. It’s the thunder to Value’s Lightning.” – Bob Burg, The Go-Giver

“Don’t have making money as your target. Your target should be serving others. When you hit the target, you’ll get a reward. That reward will be money, and you can do with that what you want. But, that’s not the target. The Target is serving others (bringing them value). Remember that…and you’ll make a lot of money.” – From an Early Mentor of Bob’s

Today’s episode is all about how to create automated webinars for your law firm.  That’s right, I said automate.    Automation is the key to all good marketing – especially when it comes to marketing a law firm.  Webinars are no different.

When it comes to automating a webinar it is simply a matter of preparing and perfecting one single presentation, then using automation software to make that same presentation, over and over again – even while you are in court, meeting with clients, or perhaps even snoozing away on vacation on some sunny beach.

Special thanks to John Skiba for his JDBlogger Podcast, giving me the idea to do a podcast on webinars.

LMME 055 : Here’s the Marketing Mix I’m using to Build My Law Practice

Podcast cover
Read more

In this week’s episode, I talk about the marketing mix of my new law practice, and how I’m using 3 specific strategies on a daily basis to hit my marketing goals.

As most of you are aware, I’m in the process of transitioning my law practice from a family law practice to an intellectual property and brand protection practice. After 10 years of practicing family law, this is no small task.

(If you are interested in getting on the waiting list to access my premium podcast, which chronicles my day-to-day journey as I build a new law practice, click here.)

The marketing techniques that I am using are already starting to pay dividends, as I discuss on today’s show. While I don’t have any “paying” business clients… yet, I’m confident that as a result of the tactics I am employing (and which I discuss in this week’s episode) my first client is not far off.

Hope you enjoy this episode!

LMME 051 : Building a Successful Law Practice without Working Yourself to Death (Encore)

Podcast cover
Read more

  4. Having the appropriate mindset of a business owner
  5. Using technology to leverage your law practice

LMME 050 : Bob Burg, The Consumate Go-Giver

LMME 049 : How to Create Automated Webinars for your Law Firm

Podcast cover
Read more
