How to Buy a House Without Saving a 20% Down Payment With Cari Jacobs from Unison

Podcast cover
Read more

Maybe you have student loan debt or your career hasn’t reached it’s full earning potential yet, all of these potentially negative things don’t discount you from being able to come up with a healthy down payment to buy your first house (and I’m not talking about robbing a bank either).

Today’s podcast guest, Cari Jacobs, the CMO of a company called Unison is joining us to share this new concept of co-investing with homeownership and why technology is helping you fund that elusive 20% down payment. So I wanted to know from Cari how is it possible to buy a home when you have less than 20% saved for your down payment.

What I Ask:

  •  Is owning a home a reality if you’re still balancing debt and getting set up in your career?
  • How is technology advancing the process of home buying and making it easier for millennials?
  • Tell me about the history of Unison – how did the company and concept come about and what is the audience you’re trying to serve?
  • If I wanted to purchase a $500,000 home for example, how would I work with Unison for my down payment?
  • Are there any potential downsides?
  • If you could leave the listeners with one tip about reaching their home buying goal, what would it be?

What You'll Learn

  • How to balance debt you are paying off with the desire to buy a home
  • All about the new concept of co-investing and how you can benefit
  • Why the millennial generation is so different when it comes to home buying
  • How you can use someone else's money to leverage your down payment
  • Is now the right time to buy (or is there ever a right time to buy)
  • How powerful the consumer home buying market is to our overall economy

My dad is somewhat of a legend in the financial services world. He's been helping people for well over 40 years now and is beloved for his personality and intent on always putting the client's needs before his. I know him as Dad and the person who taught me almost everything I know about personal finance.

My Dad, Stan, is joining us for a lively discussion about the advice he has about how to be smart with your money in your twenties and thirties. We'll also talk about the difference between perceptions of money when he was in his twenties versus now - which is always a fun topic for me.

Dad's top advice:

  • Save for emergencies (and save more than you think)
  • Invest in your 401(k) and don't touch the money

Create a Money Roadmap Without Being Rich (with Anna Sergunina )

Podcast cover
Read more

One big common misconception is that you have to have a ton of money to start doing cool things with your money, like growing it or giving it a direction, and that simply isn’t true. Some of the best money moves I’ve made is when I didn’t have a lot but I knew I needed to be really intentional and good things happened because I had a plan in place.

Our podcast guest, Anna Sergunina is also working to blow up that myth. Anna is a kick-ass Certified Financial Planner and the President & CEO at MainStreet Financial Planning Inc., the nation’s largest fee-only, hourly project-based financial planning business. Even though she became a CFP, she still admits that she made all possible financial mistakes as a young adult. Her career goal is to help you understand that you don't have to be rich to start working on your finances.

What You'll Learn

  • What are some of the biggest myths that people believe when it comes to money that hold them back
  • What is a money roadmap and how do you create one
  • How do you achieve a money goal without being rich
  • Anna's story to becoming a CFP and what she's passionate about teaching
  • Why is everyone talking about money dates

How to Talk to Kids About Money (with Gregg Murset)

Podcast cover
Read more

Do you remember who talked to you about money?

For most of us, the answer to that question is no one, really. In fact, a recent study by Quicken revealed that one-third of adults said no one taught them about money when they were a child and in turn, are twice as likely to delay talking to their own children about money until they are 18 or older.

Frustrated by this, Gregg Murset, CEO of BusyKid, decided to find a better way to talk to kids about money. Using technology, Gregg created My Job Chart, the first electronic chore/allowance platform to take advantage of our modern digital society. I so wish I had this as a kid!

What You'll Learn

  • Practical ways to talk to your kids, or anyone's kids, about money
  • How to use technology to change the conversation and impact with kids
  • Money wisdom Gregg has learned from talking to his 6 kids about money
  • Why Gregg thinks we all need to pay attention to financial literacy
  • How to turn chores and an allowance into a savings account and stock investing
