Rank #1: 305: 4 Ways To Manage The Mental Load of Motherhood

Podcast cover
Read more

I have to laugh as I was recording this episode because I kept accidentally saying “the motherload” every time I went to say “the mental load of motherhood”.  And let’s be honest.  The mental load of motherhood is THE MOTHERLOAD.

The Motherload (aka the mental load of motherhood) includes the 175 running lists you keep in your head in every single moment of #everydamnday.

It includes:

  • every school form you need to sign tonight
  • how much creamer you have left in the fridge
  • how many rolls of TP you have in the house
  • when you need to call your mom
  • what bills you need to pay by next Wednesday
  • when the kids have their next day off school
  • every single email you need to reply to today and which ones can wait until tomorrow
  • what time the babysitter is coming on Friday
  • which hotel you need to book for spring break
  • which of your kid’s friends can’t have peanuts
  • which of your kid’s friends you need to buy bday gifts for
  • which socks your kid will NOT wear
  • how many pairs of clean undies every single person in the household has left before you have to do laundry again
  • what you’re having for dinner tonight and tomorrow and the next night and the next night and the next night and the next night
  • which kid will eat crusts
  • which kid will eat carrots
  • which water bottle the kid will drink out of
  • which water bottle the kid won’t drink out of

You are a damn library of information. You are basically hosting your own world wide web in your head.

It’s a lot.

It’s too much.

It’s maddening.

And sometimes it feels SUPER unfair.

The Motherload is exhausting on so many levels.

I want to give you some hope.  But I’m going to warn you that this will require some work on your part.  But the work will be REWARDING.  The work will lessen the load!

When it comes to The Motherload, we tend to make it really hard on ourselves.  We get in our own way over and over.  We get stuck in perfectionism and martyrdom and make ourselves miserable.

Listen in as I give you 4 methods to manage the madness.  These methods are simple (although not necessarily easy if you’re Type A like me) and they are going to dramatically improve your life and create space in your head (who doesn’t need more space in their head?!)

Rank #2: 62: Carrie Wilkerson: Shameless Mom & Barefoot Executive

Podcast cover
Read more

Year ago, one of my mentors told me to look up Carrie Wilkerson.  He thought I would be impressed with the way she built a business on her own terms, from her own home, keeping her own family as her #1 priority.  Always.

You all know, I love doing Facebook “research.”  So, I looked Carrie up, “Followed” her (as her Friends were at capacity, no surprise), and was immediately very impressed.

What drew me to Carrie was her story.  Through various Facebook posts over the years, I saw her post these intimate snapshots into her life and her history.  Her posts about her family routinely left me teary eyed.  While I was trying (desperately) to grow my little family, she filled me with hope as I learned her story of how she grew her (not so little) family.  I could feel love and grace and strength in everything she shared.

When I started the Shameless Mom Academy, I knew I wanted to interview Carrie.  She is tough but gentle; firm, but kind; loud, but soft.  My kind of girl.  100%.

I have heard some of Carrie’s stories a few times now (yes, I totally sound like a stalker). Yet, she still gave me goose bumps over and over in this interview.

Listen in to hear Carrie share:

  • How she became a Barefoot Executive and how you can be one too
  • Why your competition is not your competition
  • How she overcame 6 figures of debt and lost over 120 pounds
  • How you can divide & conquer and create boundaries in all areas of your life in order to prevent resentment from others
  • How to say NO and why you should say NO
  • Why your kids need to be on a stage with a mic, sooner than later

Rank #3: 389: Holidays, Boundaries, PEACE & JOY

Podcast cover
Read more

Every year since launching The Shameless Mom Academy podcast, moms have asked me about how to manage families and boundaries around the holidays.  So, every year I talk about it.  Because I don’t believe you should compromise your joy to meet someone else’s needs.

I want you to own your holidays.  Own your peace.  Own your joy.  Own the magic.  Own the boundaries.  Own your disregard for others' expectations of you.

That last part might sound harsh, insensitive, even downright selfish.  And maybe it is.  And maybe that’s ok!

It is not your job to manage the expectations of 4 sets of grandparents, 7 aunts, 3 uncles, 37 cousins, 4 step-siblings, a half-sister and a partridge in a pear tree.

IT’S NOT.

Your job is to meet the needs of your immediate family unit - to create joy and magic and meaningful traditions for these most intimate relationships with the few people you adore more than anyone else in the world.

It might be possible to do this and meet the needs of some extended family.  And it might not.  And that’s ok.

If you have any dread over the upcoming holiday season, this ep is for you.  Tune in to learn how to prioritize all the right things (your joy and peace!) and how to set boundaries around all the noise (even if you love the heck out of those noisy folks!)

Rank #4: 95: Four Tips to Make Exercise Stick

Podcast cover
Read more

I wanted to put out this episode at this exact time because this is about the time that we start to reconsider our New Year Resolutions and/or give them up all together.

I would like to offer an alternative. I would like to give you a PLAN. Just because you don’t knock a goal out of the park immediately does not mean you should put that goal on the back burner.

In fact, the best way to approach a goal is through small steps over time. So, if you have already given up on a health goal for 2017, I’m hear to give you permission to put that goal back on the table. Your goal wants to be met. It wants to be realized. It wants to improve your life. Your goal needs you.

So let’s get started, together, shall we?

If you’ve been struggling to make fitness stick in the new year, I year you. While there is a lot of hype about fitness in January, it is usually a very transitional month for people, making it challenging to take on new habits and make them stick. LISTEN IN if you need help getting your rear in gear!

4 Tips to making exercise stick

  1. Have an accountability plan
    1. HINT: This can involve any of the following: a calendar, your fridge, your family, your friends, your boss, your co-workers, a sticker chart
  1. Do something you enjoy
    1. HINT: You won’t always enjoy it in the moment, but you should enjoy the overall experience and the benefits that begin the moment you are done
  1. Tell other people
    1. HINT: Learn how to brag (yes, there is a “right” way)
  1. Be in it for the long haul
    1. HINT: you gotta create some hype around your plan and your plan needs to be evolve-able to keep you engaged for the rest of your life

Rank #5: 129: The 4 C's of (Re)Building Your Identity

Podcast cover
Read more

By now you have heard me share all about how motherhood knocked me on my butt – BIG TIME.  It took me longer than I like to admit to adjust to my new life as a mom and to resolve myself to the idea that I would never get my old life back.

My old life wasn’t really any better than my new mommy life (except for there was more time for sleep and wine) – but my old life was a life of predictability and all things KNOWN.  So, basically the opposite of motherhood.

Over the last few years, I have been able to see how one rebuilds their identity – because I rebuilt mine.  The coolest part of the journey is that one the other side of the fear of the unknown is power and strength I didn’t know I had.

Listen in to learn The 4 Cs of (Re)Building Your Identity:

  1. Character
  2. Courage
  3. Collaboration
  4. Confidence

Walking through these 4 areas will give you the direction you need to build a life you love without feeling overwhelmed (and/or terrified…)

Rank #7: 379: 4 Time Management Mindset Shifts for Moms

Podcast cover

Do you suck at time management?

I get it.  I’ve been there.  Like, this week.

I have to laugh at the timing of this episode.  I recorded it a few weeks ago, but at the time of writing this show description, my time couldn’t feel more tight.  It has been one of those weeks where I’m constantly having to follow my own advice.

In a week when all the things are exploding and imploding, I’m having to be exceptionally clear around why I’m spending time on every single task - to make sure that I’m not prioritizing the wrong thing at the wrong time.  This is HARD.  This means that I’m dropping a few balls - on purpose.  And that’s ok.

Time management is not about getting all the things done on time.  It’s about getting the right things done at the right time.  It’s about identifying what the “right things” even are.

Listen in to this episode to learn how to:

  • Work with your vision instead of against it when it comes to prioritization
  • Gain clarity around action steps versus tasks (so important!)
  • ID how you engage in procrastination and perfectionism (and how to stop)
  • Eliminate/automate/delegate

Susie Pettit has been helping women live lives they love for over 10 years. She is the host of the podcast Love Your Life Show and owner of the Wellness Company Strength: Mind & Body, LLC. She is a certified Life + Wellness Coach and a mom of 3 teenage sons.

Susie is passionate about helping women live lives that feel as good on the inside as they look on the outside. She spent more than half her life living a life she did not love; as a people pleaser, codependent perfectionist, trying desperately to win an award for ‘Martyr of the Year’.

Luckily she hit rock bottom and now has the breadth of experience to teach first hand about setting healthy boundaries, beating your inner critic, conscious parenting, and how to use mindfulness-based tools to beat overwhelm and anxiety. She uses two foundational frameworks: Her 5 Pillars of Wellness and the Thought Model.

Listen in to hear Susie share:

  • Being raised by my controlling and manipulative parents and building a life based on their standards, not her own identity
  • How she stopped looking for external validation
  • All her worst fears came true, she hit rock bottom, and she rose from the ashes
  • How people pleasers are actually people deceivers
  • The thought-model around the think-feel-act loop that gives you control in the most challenging moments in your life and how to use the “power pause”

Rank #11: 141: 5 Questions to Ask Yourself Every Morning

Podcast cover
Read more

I have a challenge for you.  You ready?

I want you to start asking yourself these 5 questions every morning.

  1. What will I do for ME today?
  2. What am I grateful for?
  3. How do I want to serve today?
  4. What is one uncomfortable think I need to today to move closer to a goal?
  5. How will I create joy today?

One of the best gifts you can give yourself everyday is a few moments just for YOU first thing in the morning.  This reflective time can happen as you workout, as you journal, as you meditate, or as you shower (seriously, I have the most brilliant thoughts in the shower!)

Starting your day with some intentional focus about how you want to embrace the day not only gives you a strong sense of empowerment and control – it allows you to actually CREATE your day to be whatever you desire.

You will be amazed by how asking yourself just 5 questions every morning will change the course of your day and, in turn, change the course of your life.  It is really that powerful and magical.  Try me!

Rank #12: 107: 4 Reasons You're Not Meeting Your Goals

Podcast cover
Read more

I have been working with goal setters for the last 14 years.  Working in the fitness industry, goals are always part of the conversation with clients.  I’ve witnessed women on top of the world because they just crushed a goal.  I’ve also witnessed women set the same goal over and over, feeling defeated and deflated in their self-proclaimed failure to ever reach said goal.  This can be a viscous cycle that is really damaging to one’s mental health.

Here are 4 reasons I frequently see women fail to meet their goals:

1. You haven’t seriously considered how amazing your life would be if you actually met your goal.  Have you really deeply considered what your life would be like if you meet your goal? Would you be more patient with your kids, more productive at work, have more desire to fuel your body well?  Would you have more energy and less anxiety?  Would you feel more in control of your life and more assertive in your relationships?

2. You’re not putting enough structure around them.  If you’re not specific about your goal and the EXACT steps you need to take to accomplish it, you’re not going to succeed.  A blueprint of sorts is essential.

3. You’re holding out for a quick fix or next week, next month, next year.

Stop waiting and start taking action.  It is really as simple as that.  A quick fix is a temporary bandaid.  It will wash off after just a few days.  Life will always be busy.  The “right time” will never present itself.  If you’re serious about accomplishing something, you must START.

4. You don’t believe in yourself and you’re quick to give up. Self-limiting beliefs are the silent killer of most goals. You must take steps to improve your head game and tell yourself you ARE worth it.  Talk out your plan with a friend or mentor you know would be a great cheerleader.  Seeing someone else’s confidence in you will give you confidence in yourself.  You must be kind to yourself every damn day – telling yourself you ARE worth it and you CAN do it.

Listen in to this episode to hear exactly how you can combat these hiccups and roadblocks.  I have seen women and moms just like you turn their lives around because they made a plan and committed to working the plan.  You truly can do anything – as long as YOU believe you can.

Darcy Lockman is a journalist turned clinical psychologist and the author of All the Rage: Mothers, Fathers, and the Myth of Equal Partnership (Harper Collins). Her writing has appeared in the New York Times and the Washington Post, among others. Her first book, Brooklyn Zoo, chronicled the year she spent working on the psychiatric ward of a city hospital. She currently practices in New York City, where she lives with her husband and daughters.

I have invested a lot of time learning about building equitable relationships in the last year.  As someone who likes to take on all. the. things., I know what it’s like to be the doer and the know-er and the gatekeeper of everything in the family.  It’s an exhausting, unfair, and unnecessary burden that we can improve - drastically. I couldn’t be more excited to invite you into this conversation with Darcy and me.

  • Societal, multi-generational indoctrination of gender roles - even among progressive couples
  • The truth about maternal gatekeeping and the potential damage around it
  • The power of using your anger in adaptive ways to have a more equitable relationship

Rank #16: 327: Mom Guilt Is A Lie

Podcast cover
Read more

This is going to sound pretty controversial, but I’m saying it anyway.  Because of #truth...

Mom guilt is a lie.

That’s not to say your feelings of guilt aren’t real.  THEY ARE.

But, as you sit in those feelings, please know this:

Mom guilt is a social construct in which women are indoctrinated to think they should feel bad for ever prioritizing themselves, their identity, their careers, or their happiness over their kids.

You know how I know this is true??  Because I know the following:

Men are not asked, “How do you do it all?  How do you juggle your career with your family?

Men are not asked, “Don’t you feel bad when you have to travel for work and you don’t get to see your kids for 3 days?”

Men don’t have to internalize messages like, “I don’t know how you work so much.  I would feel so bad not being at my kid’s games/practices/plays/recitals.”

When men consider taking up new hobbies/activities they don’t automatically think, “That would be awesome, but I would feel so bad taking that time away from my family.”

Women are indoctrinated to feel like shitty moms if they prioritize their careers, their self-care, their sanity over their families needs.

Men are encouraged to prioritize their careers and hobbies over their families needs - “Climb that corporate ladder!”  “You gotta start golfing with us, man!”  “Meet us every Saturday for pick up basketball!”

I share this all because I want you to take a hard look at your relationship with mom guilt.  Guilt of any kind is not productive.  It keeps us stuck.  It holds us back.  It does not serve any positive purpose.  So, it you’re spending time stuck in mom guilt, you’re wasting time and energy that could be used for so many other positive things in your life.

Let’s flip this social construct on its head so we can all be more intentional about how we use our energy, our gifts, and our rights to rest (yes, you get to rest more when you stop feeling so damn guilty!)

Listen in to this episode to go on a deep dive into how you’ve been indoctrinated - and how to GET OUT.

455: 3 Steps To Create Core Values You Can Confidently Commit To

Podcast cover
Read more

A few years ago I was at a workshop for business owners and we had to create a list of our core values.  We were given a list of 40 or so values to choose from and had to narrow it down to our top 5.

I couldn’t do it.

I cried.

It took me longer than anyone else in the room to narrow my list down to just a few core values I wanted to commit to.

The process of discernment around this brought up a lot of emotion around why certain things are important to me.  It forced me to look at myself, who I am, how I show up, and how I want to impact the world.

While this was hard, it was ultimately so freeing.  When I (finally) completed the exercise, I had so much clarity around what was most important to me and why each value was important.  These core values have become guiding lights for me as I’ve developed as a woman, a mom, and a CEO.

Listen in to hear why committing to a short list of core values is important - even crucial.  Learn exactly how to choose a few select core values that will become beacons in times of uncertainty.  Get excited about determining what’s most important to you and how to live more clearly, deeply, and loudly in your values that matter the most.

If there has ever been a time to persist, it is now.

Persistence leads to change and growth and evolution and POWER.

And...there is no denying that persistence is hard.  It can be overwhelming, exhausting, and feel so relentless.  It is all those things, but that doesn’t make it impossible.  In our fatigue, it’s easy to lose track of the importance of what we are working toward.

To stay persistent we must give ourselves permission.

Permission to:

Do better

Commit

Take imperfect action

Be an action taker and decision maker

Mess up and keep going

Use your voice

Take a chance

Learn something new

Take sides

Rest and recover in order to keep going

Step back from unhealthy relationships/unhealthy people

Say yes

Say no

Become a different person

Listen to your gut (ex: Patty)

Let go of other peoples’ expectations

Be bold

Shine

In giving yourself permission to persist, you will find the power to use your voice in new ways, to affect change, to build a better legacy, and to have more massive impact.  This is how we can, together, build a better world for all.

I think it’s safe to say that 2020 has broken many (all?) of us over and over.

A friend recently introduced me to the idea of being antifragile, based on the work and book Antifragile: Things That Gain From Disorder by Nassim Nicholas Taleb.  She shared with me that in our breaking we have this beautiful opportunity to pick up the pieces and rebuild into something more dynamic and flexible and strong and powerful and thoughtful and conscientious.

We will break and we can rebuild and in our rebuilding we can become better than before.  We can embrace that we will break over and over in our lifetime and each time something beautiful can come of the way we put the pieces back together.

There has been a lot of breaking in 2020.  In our breaking, our self trust has been ROCKED.  Repeatedly.

It is time to rebuild.  Listen in to learn 6 ways that you can start to rebuild into a woman who is more dynamic, flexible, strong, powerful, thoughtful, and conscientious.

As a woman and person of color, Abbi Wood has heard more than her fair share of what to say and do in the world. At times a whisper, and at times a yell, she's used her voice to create what she calls a full and fulfilling life. Primarily, she works with biz owners to help them find their voice (or, as she calls it, uncover their biznality) so that marketing and talking about their business feels like a natural extension of themselves vs an out-of-body experience.

I reached out to Abbi after hearing her speak at an event.  She was there to speak about helping women find their voices in their businesses and brands.  But what was so compelling about her talk was her own story about finding her own voice after being silenced by her family, pushed into an arranged marriage, and moving across the world to build a completely new and independent life.

Listen in to hear Abbi share:

  • Her experience being raised in Pakistani family in England
  • Her experience feeling like she didn’t fit in anywhere - in her brown family or in her white world
  • How her voice was quieted by her family and culture
  • Her path into an arranged marriage
  • How she ended up secretly on birth control while also in fertility treatment

Podcast cover

In the last 3 months, we have had the opportunity to postpone, pivot, and repurpose nearly every aspect of our lives - over and over again.  It has been hard, heavy, confusing, and disorienting to say the least.

But 12 weeks in, I’d say we have begun to master these shifts.  We are able to take a critical look at the opportunities in front of us each day and assess: “Is this a time to postpone, pivot, or repurpose.”

I know these decisions are becoming more clear for me, as I make them over and over.  I’m able to make them with increased ease and confidence.

Today, I’ll share how I’m discerning when to postpone vs pivot vs repurpose.  I’ll use a few recent family and business examples, the biggest and most scary (and most successful) being the massive shift to repurpose Shameless Mom Con 2020 to the Shameless Mom Con Collective.

443: How To Reboot Your Body In A Pandemic

Podcast cover

I’m wondering how many of you, like me, saw the beginning of this pandemic as similar to a series of snow days or a long weekend?  Perhaps you let typical habits and routines go in order to hunker down with late-night TV binging, extra treats, lotsa wine, little movement, and a bit of disregard for what really fuels your body.

Perhaps as you got deeper into this weird and unsettling season of life, you had less and less time to yourself.  You stopped doing restorative activities that allowed you to have moments to yourself to think and breath - probably because there was no way to actually be alone.

We are now months into this season of life and many of us are suffering because we have let go of the habits that truly serve us: fueling our bodies well, moving our bodies to process stress, and resting/restoring when we need time and space to ourselves.

Listen in to hear how you can get your body back into a groove that supports the energy you want to carry each day - and gifts you the space you need to keep your head above water.

439: 5 Ways To Build Confidence In Less Than 5 Minutes A Day

Podcast cover
Read more

Building confidence is like writing a book or running a marathon - you do it one action step, one word, one block at a time.  It's not a one-and-done process.  It's a lifetime of practice.  A lifetime of choosing courage - often tiny acts of courage.

In 2019 I did two of the most courageous things I've ever done:

  1. I hosted the first Shameless Mom Con. This was such a big and overwhelming task to take on. But I knew if I could pull it off it would be life changing for my attendees and for me.
  2. I learned how to ski. I know this might sound silly to classify as a massive act of courage, but for a girl who is terrified of speed and momentum and heights (read: chairlifts), this was a big deal.

I was only able to take on these acts of courage because I am constantly working on building my confidence - especially around things that are hard or uncomfortable for me.

I have practices that I engage in daily that allow me to step into my confidence #everydamnday.  These are small things that do not take a lot of time but have big impact in my ability to keep my confidence high, especially in trying times.

Right now we are in trying times - the likes of which we have never seen before.  If there has ever been a time to cultivate confidence and remind ourselves just how much power innately exists inside of us, it is now.

Often, cultivating confidence comes from tiny action steps repeated over and over that lead us to take on bigger goals (starting a business, running a marathon, creating and sharing our art, learning a new skill, taking on a new leadership role.)

Listen in to learn 5 tiny action steps you can take each day that take mere minutes but have deep impact in your ability to cultivate the confidence you need to make it through trying times - perhaps even thrive through trying times.

437: Racism, Rachel Hollis, and How Leaders Truly RISE

Podcast cover
Read more

Leadership is typically a series of imperfect action steps.

Leaders tumble, fall, and crash just like anyone else.

But when a leader tumbles, falls or crashes, there is an audience watching to see how they will stand back up, pick up the pieces, and put things back together.

When a leader crashes and harm is done to others in the wake of their errors, people watch even more closely.

When harm is done, trust is eroded.  Trust is broken between the leader and anyone who was harmed, obviously.  But trust is also broken between the leader and anyone who is watching if the bystanders don’t see the leader take active steps to rebuild trust with those who were harmed.  Those harmed hope to be held.  Those watching hope to see the leader offer protection to those hurting. This is how everyone can recover and heal and know that they are in a safe community.

Positive leadership looks like owning your mistakes and owning when you’ve caused harm without providing excuses or placing blame on others.

Positive leadership looks like having uncomfortable conversations publicly.

Positive leadership looks like recognizing your blind spots and committing to active and ongoing learning so you can see them more fully.

Positive leadership looks like inviting feedback when you have caused harm and engaging in conversation with those who are hurting.

Positive leadership looks like protecting people in your community from abuse and trauma.

Positive leadership looks like pushing pause on the day-to-day parts of your work to rebuild trust where you have broken trust.

We are all leaders - whether you are leading families, PTAs, soccer teams or companies.  You are a leader.

You are going to screw up.  You will crash.  You will cause harm.

How will you rebuild trust after you cause harm?

Listen in to learn how leaders can do better when they cause harm, especially as it pertains to race and protecting people of color in your community.  This episode is inspired by a leader who recently crashed and then opted not to protect those harmed.  A community became fractured and the erosion of trust was massive. This example is a powerful example of how leaders, especially white leaders, need to do so much better.
