As I shared in episode 509, I recently completed my CrossFit Level 1 Training. It really got me thinking about how I can make sure I'm not simply going through the motions of exercise, but that I'm really doing the right things for my body and my goals. Too many people 'check the box' by going to the gym, but they aren't increasing their fitness or moving towards their goal of fat loss.

I texted my good friend and former trainer Nathan and asked if he'd help me establish a general framework for my own workouts, within the CrossFit format I love so much. See, in a CrossFit gym, owners/trainers can choose to write their own programming. Some programming is fantastic. Some leaves much to be desired. My fitness isn't in the hands of my gym owner, my fitness is in my hands. After Nathan and I began chatting about this over the phone, I said, "Hey! I think my podcast listeners would love to listen in on this conversation! Are you okay recording this with me?"

He agreed, and that's what we're doing in today's episode.

Terms that come up include: 

Metcon: metabolic conditioning

AMRAP: as many reps as possible

The general structure Nathan recommends for me, based on my goals and my current level of training includes:

  • 1 rest day per week
  • 3 compound movement strength days, focusing on relatively heavy weights, multiple sets of 2-6 reps
  • 4 metcons per week, most in the 6-12 minute range
  • 1-2 single modality workouts, also high intensity (running, rowing, biking, swimming)

5 Dietary Changes For Faster Results

Often, we sift through information evaluating what we know instead of what we're consistently doing.

If we know something already, we gloss over it, whether we're consistently doing it or not.

Today that stops. As you listen to these 5 dietary changes for faster results, I don't want you thinking of what you know or what you don't, I want you evaluating what you're doing consistently and what you're not.

As you hear each strategy, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Am I doing this?
  • Am I doing it consistently?
  • Is there room for improvement?
  • How will I implement those improvements today?
  • How can I practice consistency with that improvement?

While there are dozens of dietary changes you could make to accelerate your fat loss progress or improve your body composition, today we're talking about the following:

  1. Stay off the hot mess express blood sugar roller coaster (especially in the morning)
  2. Slow down on the sweets (the more sweet you eat, the more sweet you crave - this is true whether it's a "healthy" sweet or not)
  3. Dial back on dairy (for more on dairy and fat loss, listen to episode 25 and 128)
  4. Limit labels - how much of the food you consume has a nutrition facts label and added ingredients? Do an inventory of the % of your intake that comes from something with a label and strive for an improvement. Eat more foods that have no label and eat fewer foods with labels.
  5. Stop snacking - snacking is often out of boredom/habit or because your meals aren't satisfying you for long enough. Either improve the composition of your meals so they satisfy you for longer (adding more non-starchy veggies, protein or whole-food fats) or increase awareness of when you're eating when not hungry.

It's made me happier, more present, more confident and more productive. A few of my Masters Club members have begun journaling this way, too, and today you'll hear from both of us.

How are we journaling? What does it look like? How did we start?

One of the reasons people struggle to change is that they aren't paying attention. I can relate to that!

At 350+ pounds, living paycheck to paycheck, I didn’t want to pay attention.

I didn’t want to see my body.

I didn’t want to acknowledge my food choices.

I didn’t want to acknowledge my inconsistency

I didn’t want to look too closely at anything - my bank account, how much debt I had, the state of my marriage, what I looked like naked.

None of it. And, not suprisingly, nothing good was happening.

When we don't pay attention, we drift.

We never drift someplace amazing.

I am certain this type of journaling will help you create change. It's not about accountability, it's about action.

I know what I need to do. I know what I want to do.  But why should I do them if it doesn't matter to anyone else? How can I stay motivated when no one else around me is or even cares?

I signed up for your Breaking Barriers course in June, it is now November and I have yet to complete it, not because I am too busy, but I forget to make it a priority and I get lazy.    So my question .... do you think I would do better in the twelve weeks to transformation group? I think I may need more accountability.

Also, did you quit cold turkey when you learned you were pregnant or did you gradually taper off?
  • How soon can we find out if we have made it into the 12 Weeks to Transformation?
  • How do I give up drinking regular alcohol when it's such a big part of mine and my husband's life and is how we spend our time bonding, as we have three kids and don't do much else but work and look after the kids.
  • What is the best plan if I miss day(s) journaling?
  • How do I get off of being the victim over my health? I blame everything that is wrong with my weight on believed “malfunctioning body” when it fact is my lack of consistency that has brought me here.

  • I miss your “workouts I love” at the end of your episodes! My question is, what kinds of workouts can we do where we have some flexibility to chat?
  • How did you find your mentor?
  • Do you only coach people on weight loss and is the 12 Weeks to Transformation only about weight loss?
  • At 55 and no career to speak of (long story), can I still make something of myself or find my purpose?
  • Often times after I eat I just don’t feel satisfied. I know that I have fueled my body in a good way because I feel energized and not hungry but I just don’t feel satisfied (if that makes any sense) and I desire other foods that cause me to stray from my plan. Any thoughts?
