Whatever it might be, it’s really important to get started with setting out a clear plan and having some real concrete goals in place.Having a timeline for achieving your goals can create the urgency that you need to accomplish them.Soul setting is asking yourself: What is it that your soul really desires? What is it that you need more of in your life? What is it that you need to let go of?Implementing intermittent fasting is a wonderful strategy especially if you really need to support weight or blood sugar issues and insulin resistance, but not if you’re dealing with a lot of stress and adrenal issuesSupplements are never going to be the master-fixer of all things. They’re not going to work as well if you don’t have the right lifestyle in place.Lemon is not a miracle cure, but it’s definitely loaded with vitamin C, lots of phytonutrients, and citric acid. Drinking lemon water is a simple and basic way to support liver detoxification.Minding your gut health and cultivating a healthy microbiome helps to reduce your cravings and supports your digestive system overall.Action Steps:The 12 Strategies You Can ImplementSet goals and accomplish them. And set a timeline for achieving those goals.Plan ahead and be ready. It’s really important that when you have a health goal to achieve, that you become strict with yourself, stick to your goals, and plan ahead. Spend time mapping out different restaurants and places in your area that serve fresh, healthy, delicious food.Eat a healthy satiating breakfast. Make sure that it’s PFF-approved or that it’s the right blend of protein, fat, and fiber. And if you’re rushing in the morning, plan your breakfast the night before.Get your supplements in. Consider supplementing with fish oil, probiotics, protein powders, vitamin D, and magnesium.Drink lemon water.Cut out snacking. The more you eat throughout the day, the more you spike your blood sugar. Instead, focus on eating three balanced meals a day and getting in lots of water in between meals.Get your greens and salads for lunch.Get your omega-3s. But make sure to avoid tuna.Make sure you have a healthy gut.Make sure the desserts you’re having are healthy desserts.Unplug. Give your mind a break. Do things that truly feed your soul.Move past mistakes. Don’t let your negative self-talk take over. Samantha said:“You have to forgive yourself for what you’ve done in the past. What you do now and what you do moving forward does not have to be a representation of what has happened in the past. So give yourself that clean break, that clean slate, and just move forward.”“In any stage of a new, healthy lifestyle, there’s going to be obstacles; you’re going to mess up; you’re going to make mistakes. But that doesn’t mean that you have to give up. It’s a temporary thing, and the temporary mistake doesn’t have to be an ongoing mistake.” Thanks for listening!Important Announcements:If you want to join the 14-Day Spring Detox Program, it’s the LAST DAY of registration, so make sure to click on the link before it’s too late!Connect with me over on Instagram, @holisticwellnessfoodie! 75: Your Hormonal Charlie's Angels: Cortisol + Thyroid + Estrogen

What are the Hormonal Charlie’s Angels? Listen in to one of my Facebook Live recordings, find out more about your hormones, and learn to connect the dots when it comes to your health. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode75. Topics Discussed in this Episode:My hormonal health storyThe hormonal Charlie’s Angels: cortisol, estrogen, and thyroidWhat happens when these three hormones are out of balance versus when they’re in balanceSome simple strategies that you can do to support these hormonesKey Takeaways:Whether you’re fired up from work with your to-do list or fired up from running from a tiger, they’re the same stress to your body and it’s going to take a toll on your immune system. If you had caught some kind of viral infection, bacterial infection, or parasite infection in the past, if you haven’t been able to heal them appropriately, they can start to show up in your later years.Cortisol is a very smart, no-nonsense, strategic-thinking hormone. It’s alert in your nervous system to threats. If you are experiencing weight gain, cortisol and insulin are the two hormones you want to look at as both are fat-storing hormones. When you are constantly stressed, the communication between your brain and your adrenals is impaired, that’s why you experience adrenal burnout.A dysregulated cortisol could lead to diabetes, metabolic syndrome, depression, low sex drive, low thyroid, fatigue and exhaustion, irregular and heavy periods, autoimmune conditions, infertility and PCOS, and accelerated aging.Your thyroid is what controls your metabolism. When you have dysregulated thyroid, you’re going to feel sluggish, run-down, and tired. You’re going to experience infrequent bowel movement, and you might be constipated. You might also experience unexplained weight gain, depression, feeling inflamed, excessive menstrual bleeding, and excessive hair loss.Your estrogen is so important because it helps to produce your serotonin. When your estrogen is out of balance, you might experience very low libido, very dry skin, increased hunger, a lack of ovulation, a heavy period, more breast tenderness around your cycle, fibroids and cysts, more PMS symptoms, more brain fog, and PCOS.Action Steps:Connect the dots with your health. Look back to your health history and see all these different areas where things could have gone wrong and started to impact your health.Manage your cortisol, estrogen, and thyroid, as well as your insulin and blood sugar.Implement these strategies to support your hormones:Pay attention to your nutrition and eat an anti-inflammatory whole foods diet.Create a healthy routine around sleep.Make sure you stay hydrated all the time.Move and sweat.Try acupuncture.Avoid endocrine disruptors.Supplement with Vitamin C. Samantha said:“Your body can’t differentiate between a to-do list that’s super long or running from a lion in the jungle. It’s all a stressor to your body.”“Weight loss isn’t a linear process. 55: Healing Your Adrenals + Managing Stress + Adaptogenic Herbs

What do we need to know about our adrenals? How can we tell if they’re burnt out, and how can we heal them? Find out as I share some insights from a chapter of my book that’s coming out soon! You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode55. Topics Discussed in this Episode:The adrenal glands and their functionWhat cortisol does in our bodies11 Signs and symptoms that your adrenals are burnt outThe different stages of adrenal fatigueHealing your adrenal glandsThe benefits of infrared saunaAdaptogenic herbs to support your adrenalsKey Takeaways:Your adrenals control your stress response, your weight, your blood sugar, your blood pressure, and your immune system. In fact, they are our primary survival organs. Also, your adrenals can cause you to experience multiple symptoms, which we commonly refer to as adrenal fatigue.Adrenal fatigue actually refers to HPA axis dysfunction. Its symptoms include exhaustion, low thyroid function, weight gain, sleep disturbances, lack of focus and concentration, and sugar, salt, and fat cravingsYour adrenals communicate with your brain and vice versa. And when you are exposed to certain triggers such as blood sugar highs and lows, environmental toxins or perceived stress -- poor quality of sleep, blue light pollution, circadian rhythm disruption, gut inflammation -- you can impair this communication between the brain and the adrenals.Hormonal balance is essential to good health and your adrenal glands are really at the center stage in relation to the body’s ability to regulate your hormones. In fact, roughly 70% to 80% of all doctor visits are for stress-related conditions for which doctors have little or no training and nothing to offer than some temporary relief care.11 Signs and symptoms that your adrenals are burnt out:You have difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or do not feel rested upon waking. You’re craving fat, sugar, and salt.Your memory and your focus are just lacking. You’re experiencing digestive issues. You feel irritable and anxious. You get tired most afternoons, you are craving sugar and salt, and maybe you are even looking for a caffeine fix. You’re gaining weight primarily around your waist.Your hormones are a mess, so maybe you are dealing with PMS or you’re having issues with infertility, maybe even low libido. You find that you’re getting sick more often. Not only that but you’re also having a really hard time recovering from a cold or flu.You get angry quickly and you find yourself being snappy. You have low thyroid function. All kinds of perceived stress begin this really nasty cycle of adrenal fatigue, which now starts to slow down and impair your thyroid, which now also slows down and impairs your gut health, which impacts your immune system. And now, this leads to leaky gut, which can be a trigger for autoimmune disease. Action Steps:Test your adrenals with a salivary or a urine test to better understand how they’re functioning. The test that you really want to look for is something that looks at your cortisol over a 24-hour range so that you can really see the peaks and dips of your cortisol and how it occurs throughout the day.Support both your adrenals and your thyroid.Heal your adrenal glands:Practice relaxation. Find the meditation that works for you. Look up Yoga Nidra apps or download a meditation app like Headspace.Try infrared sauna therapy.Have a hot bath.Practice sleep hygiene and create healthy boundaries around sleep.Implement herbs and supplements. Samantha said:“In nature, constant stress is rare. In our human world, however, we are dealing with all kinds of stressors and we are pushing our adrenals into overdrive, and we’re impairing this communication between the adrenals and the brain. This is what’s leading to burnout and exhaustion.”“When it comes to healing your adrenal glands, you need to know that there is just no quick fix. You can’t just pop a pill and call it a day… It is the lifestyle shifts that have the biggest impact on your adrenal health.” Thanks for listening! 53: The Five Foundational Supplements That All Women Should Take

What are the core supplements that everybody should take to support their whole body from head to toe? Listen in as I talk about the five foundational supplements that are incredibly essential in supporting your hormones, your brain, your heart, and your energy. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode53. Topics Discussed in this Episode:The five foundational supplements for everyone across the boardVitamin DFish oil or omega-3MagnesiumProbioticsJuice PlusFood sources of magnesiumThe different benefits of Omega-3Things to look for in a probiotic Key Takeaways:Vitamin DVitamin D functions more like a hormone in your body, and it’s really important for modulating your immune system, for brain development, and for hormone support. It’s also important in supporting bone density as well as insulin management.Studies show that those with hypothyroidism tend to have significantly lower levels of vitamin D.There have been some great studies showing that higher intakes of vitamin D were associated with lower risks of pancreatic cancer.Studies also show that those who have any kind of psychiatric issues or neurological diseases are typically vitamin D deficient. Fish Oil or Omega-3Omega-3 is really a brain nutrient.Omega-3 helps to switch off the genes that store fat and turn on the genes that break down fat. It reduces your risk of heart attack, stroke, congestive heart failure, and even diabetes.Omega-3 can help your body to increase the utilization of fat storage from your fat cells. One of the biggest things that many people experience from supplementing with omega-3 and fish oil is the reduction in their inflammation.Omega-3 also helps to improve mental focus, memory, and overall brain function. It increases your serotonin levels and has a very positive effect on your mood. From a skin perspective, it helps to lubricate and support your skin internally. MagnesiumSo many people are deficient in magnesium and magnesium deficiency can really put you at a risk for impaired metabolic function and reduce your mitochondrial function. There are lots of ways to get your magnesium. Foods rich in magnesium include leafy greens like spinach, swiss chard, turnip greens or beet greens, kale, bok choy, romaine lettuce, colored greens, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cacao, avocado, different seeds and nuts, and fatty fish like wild-caught salmon or mackerel.Magnesium helps to strengthen your bones by promoting healthy bone density. It is also involved with helping to control blood sugar levels, especially in people who have diabetes or may be at risk for diabetes.Magnesium also helps to relieve constipation.Magnesium is also great for sleep, protecting your heart, and any type of mood disorders -- anxiety, irritability, and even depression. ProbioticsOur gut is basically home to approximately 100 trillion microorganisms and our gut contains 10 times more bacteria than all human cells in the body. Some things that can really impact our gut and our gut flora are antibiotics. After antibiotic use, the diversity of your gut flora isn’t recovered unless you supplement with probiotics.Infants that aren’t breastfed and are born to mothers with bad gut flora are more like to develop unhealthy gut bacteria and that these early differences in gut flora may predict being overweight, developing diabetes, having eczema, psoriasis, depression, and other health problems in the future. Greens Products or Juice Plus+Juice Plus+ is a blend of 30 different fruits and vegetables, bridging the gap between what you should eat and what you do eat every day, so it’s really providing you with real food nutrition. It comes in three different bottles -- the Orchard Blend, the Garden Blend, and the Vineyard Blend.PaleoGreens from Designs for Health is over 90% organic and doesn’t have grains, gluten, fructose, and soy. Action Steps:Get your vitamin D levels tested so that you can really gauge where you are on the range.Work with a health practitioner to assess your dosing when it comes to magnesium supplements.Support your gut by supplementing with a probiotic.Make sure that your probiotics have live active culture, that there’s no sugar added, and that it’s enteric-coated so this can really help support with your digestion and bioavailability, especially if you have low hydrochloric acid or stomach issues and digestive issues in general. Enteric-coated will mean that it can help you absorb it much, much better. When it comes to probiotics, look for a combination of different strains and at least 10 billion cultures. And make sure that it’s non-GMO certified. Samantha said:“I call [these supplements] the foundational five because I think that these are really at the core that everybody should take, and then on top of that, you can add in other strategic supplements based on your condition or symptoms or whatever you might be experiencing.”“I don’t typically recommend multivitamins… because if you need to get a high dose of vitamins, you’re going to have to pop a lot… and oftentimes you’re just getting really crappy versions of the vitamins in there… Instead, I recommend a greens product or something like Juice Plus+.” Thanks for listening! 62: Solutions for Low Progesterone and Lengthening Your Luteal Phase

Are you someone who experiences short menstrual cycles? So many women ask me how they can lengthen their menstrual cycle, specifically their luteal phase. In this episode, I talk about how a short luteal phase impacts women’s fertility and overall health, as well as the strategies that you can implement to make it longer. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode62 Topics Discussed in this Episode:What exactly is the luteal phase? What are the 4 phases of a woman’s menstrual cycle? How long should the luteal phase actually be?What causes a short luteal phase? How does a luteal phase defect impact fertility? Why is progesterone called “the fat cat hormone” and why is it important? What strategies can you implement to fix the problem of a short luteal phase? Key Takeaways:The luteal phase is the third phase of a woman’s menstrual cycle. It’s basically the time between the day after ovulation occurs and the day before the start of your period. It is during this time when progesterone levels will rise in your cycle and when fertilization and implantation occurs. The luteal phase is the longest phase of your cycle. On average, it’s between 10 to 16 days long. If it’s consistently lower than 10 days, especially for more than three months in a row, you have what’s known as a short luteal phase or a luteal phase defect. Not only does a short luteal phase affect your menstrual cycle as a whole but it really impacts your overall health and your fertility. The good thing is that this can all be fixed with lifestyle strategies, supplementation strategies, and nutrition strategies. If you find that you are really moody and anxious and irritable pre-menstruation, this could mean that you have low progesterone levels.Having healthy progesterone levels is so important because it keeps your estrogen in check. If you have estrogen dominance, this can lead to heavier, longer periods, as well as shorter periods, and more PMS symptoms overall. Action Steps:Strategies to support your progesterone levels and lengthen your cycleEat foods rich in vitamin C.Include green, leafy vegetables in your diet every single day.Make sure you’re getting your omega-3 fatty acids.Supplement with a vitamin B complex.Make sure you have adequate consumption of dietary cholesterol.Supplement with selenium.Supplement with phosphatidylserine.Chart your cycle. It will give you so much information about your period and your hormonal health.Try acupuncture. It’s great for hormonal imbalances, and many women report having more regulated cycles and increased fertility after doing weekly acupuncture sessions.Lower your cortisol levels by regularly hanging out with your girlfriends. Samantha said:“The only way we really support and manage stress is by how we show up in our lives. So it’s really, really essential that you work on that piece as well as including the supplements and the diet.”“When your progesterone is in balance, you are going to feel like you are a rock star.”Thanks for listening!Important Announcements:Join the Healthy Hormones for Women Online Program! Get ready to have your mind blown as one of the smartest women that I know, Dr. Robyn Murphy, talks about genetic testing and the things that you can learn from getting a genetic test. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode89 Topics Discussed in this Episode:What it means to test your DNAThe types of genetic testingThe things that we can learn by testing our DNAThe connection between the gallbladder, estrogen, and chemical toxicity, and how it relates to geneticsThe DUTCH testHow your diet is impacting your genesThe keto diet and whether it’s the best option for youHow to know if you’re getting the right amount of nutrients Key Takeaways:Your DNA is the code that provides the information for your cells what to make, how to function, and how to respond to the environment. This is passed down through lineage -- you get half of it from your mother, and the other half from your father. The way that the report of your genetic test is delivered is through easy-to-understand terms. It’s more about what the action items are.Dietary intervention. What type of diet are you going to best respond to? Are you sensitive to fat and gaining weight? Are you going to respond well to a keto diet or a low-fat diet for weight loss? Sensitivities. Do you have risk factors for celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity? Nutrients. What is your individual nutritional need? Are you getting enough B vitamins? Do you need to supplement? Are you getting enough choline?Physical fitness and exercise. What types of exercise do you have more predilection towards? Detox pathways.Hormone health.Obesity risks.Mental wellness. The only food sensitivity that we can really look at with a genetic test is gluten sensitivity. It has to do with how the immune system is responding to the food based on whether there’s a risk for celiac disease or whether there’s non-celiac gluten sensitivity. The methylation pathway is found in every single one of cells for the most part, and it’s what’s responsible for healing our DNA, for repairing our cells and making sure that we have something called SAM (S-Adenosyl methionine), which is used for hundreds of biochemical pathways. Action Steps:Get a genetic test and start to understand more about your individual health.Do a follow-up testing to the DUTCH test annually or bi-annually and be mindful of appropriate surveillance as well talking to your healthcare provider for healthy estrogen and hormones.Consider supplementing to help increase your nutrient stores and make sure you’re optimizing to make sure all your cells and biochemical pathways are working properly. Robyn said:“The lifestyle genetics, what we’re using this information for, is to determine what specific lifestyle strategies are going to be best for that individual. So it’s predictive medicine, it’s predictive testing.”“All what we’re trying to do is prevent diseases and make sure that people feel their best, have the best quality of life and are really making the key choices that are going to make a big difference in their life.” Thanks for listening!Links to things we talk about in the show:Top Genetic-Based Tips by Dr. MurphyImportant Announcements:Learn more about our Genetic Coaching program.Save on the AOR Genetic Test + Supplements with the code HEALTHYHORMONES 2020. 52: Q&A: Solutions for Low Progesterone, Menopausal Symptoms, Thyroid Health, Eating for Your Period & Strategies for Cold and Flu

Welcome to another Q&A episode! The questions that come in, many of us have these questions and sometimes we’re just scared to ask. So take a listen as I provide some insights and strategies on the things that you want to know about. Enjoy! You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode52. Topics Discussed in this Episode:How can you boost low progesterone? Why should you take a DUTCH test? When you have low thyroid function, should you support your thyroid, your adrenals, or both? What can you do with terrible menopausal symptoms?Should you eat different foods while you’re on your period? Is it possible to take too much B vitamins? What can you do about getting sick a lot?Key Takeaways:Some of the reasons for having low progesterone could be age. Or it could be that your progesterone is low in relation to your estrogen, meaning that there is estrogen dominance going on.If you have low thyroid function, it typically means you have a high adrenal function. So your adrenals and your thyroid can’t really function at the same time. When it comes to menopause, your symptoms will get worse if you have a congested liver, if you have adrenal fatigue, and if you have low thyroid function. Action Steps:Get acupuncture treatment to help boost low progesterone. You can also start to incorporate some evening primrose oil, specifically during the second half of your cycle.Get a DUTCH test.Support both your adrenals and your thyroid.Address terrible menopausal symptoms:Do a thyroid test and run a full thyroid panel).Manage the stressors in your life.Implement a high level of self-care.Detoxify. Get rid of toxic products that you’re currently using. Go to ewg.org and look up the Clean 15 and the Dirty Dozen lists.Eat a variety of foods during your period.Make sure you’re getting enough iron by eating red meat (lamb, beef, organ meats like liver). If you have a heavier flow, take an iron supplement.Get lots of vitamin C by eating citrus fruits (lemons, lime, grapefruit, berries) and dark leafy greens. Vitamin C is going to help with the absorption of iron.Eat foods rich in omega-3 (fish oil, hemp seeds, flax seeds, chia seeds, wild-caught fish).Eat foods rich in B12 (red meat, dark leafy greens)Pay attention to carbohydrates. Some women need a little bit more carbohydrates during their period and everybody is different. What to do if you often get sick:Eat mushrooms. Reishi mushrooms, Cordyceps, and Chaga are really good and help to modulate the immune system.Increase your vitamin C intake by eating vitamin C-rich foods or supplementing with it.Make sure you stay hydrated.Support your gut health with probiotics, fermented foods, and bone broth.Make sure you’re sleeping well enough and that you’re creating healthy boundaries around your sleep.Get anti-inflammatory herbs and spices (ginger-lemon tea, ginger-lemon-turmeric lemonade). Samantha said:“[The DUTCH test] is a wonderful hormone test because it will not just show you what’s going on with your sex hormones but will also really break down all your hormone metabolites and how well your liver is.”“If you feel like you’ve done everything… and your symptoms are still showing up in a big way, that’s when I would suggest to go dive in and now do the DUTCH test. Instead of trying to guess everything, just test, don’t guess, and then dive into that.” Thanks for listening! Important Announcements:Sign up for our weekly newsletter. 70: The Importance of Pooping, Optimizing Digestion, and the Gut and Hormone Connection

Why is daily pooping important? Jillian Teta talks about the importance of optimizing our gut health and its connection to our hormones. We also chat about the things that we can do to positively impact our microbiome and promote digestive health beyond just changing our diet. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode70. Topics Discussed in this Episode:The digestive process in a nutshellThe connection between your gut health and your hormonesHow to overcome constipationStrategies that you can implement to support your gutWhy it’s important to maintain a healthy and robust microbiomeThe two options for stool testingWhat candida is and how to get rid of itThe optimal gut-healing dietWhat gluten does to your body in terms of digestion and autoimmunityThe elimination challenge dietThe role that nature plays in the health of your microbiomeJillian’s thoughts on the carnivore dietKey Takeaways:Your gut acts like the Grand Central Station of your entire body. It is intimately connected with every other cell and system in your body, including the hormonal system, the detoxification system, the immune system, the neurological system, and the cardiovascular system. The gut holds two of the big five organs of detoxification -- the liver and the large intestine. The liver is primarily in charge of metabolizing and neutralizing estrogen. Once estrogen is neutralized, it is sent to the large intestine to be expelled out of the body.If you’re not pooping every day, that means your estrogen is sitting in your stool, and it gets reabsorbed back into the system and ends up back in the liver. This contributes to estrogen dominance.About 20% of your thyroid hormone T4 is converted to the active form T3 via the activity of your microbiome. If your microbiome is not healthy, it’s arguable that this conversion is compromised.Candida is part of a normal human gut flora. Issues can arise if it overgrows. This happens when one of our defenses is breached, usually due to an antibiotic knocking out your beneficial flora.Gluten is not universally terrible for everybody, but it’s a fact that it causes an issue for the gut and impacts autoimmunity.Sleep is absolutely key for digestive health. When we sleep, the parasympathetic branch of our nervous system becomes more active. Action Steps:Make sure that you poop every day.Overcome constipation quickly and easily by drinking lots of water and supplementing with magnesium glycinate.Heal your gut through your diet.If you have an autoimmune condition, avoid gluten at all cost.If you absolutely have to take antibiotics, make sure to take probiotics alongside it. Jillian said:“If you think about that large intestine as a parking lot, you want all those spaces filled with good guys. If you take an antibiotic and knock some of those good guys out, the highly opportunistic fast-growing microorganisms are going to move in.”“I think we overemphasize candida, and I think we emphasize the wrong types of information about candida. And I think it created a culture that thinks that everybody and everything has candida.” Thanks for listening!Important Announcements:Join my FREE 10-Day Detox! 83: Why Plant Oils Heal Your Skin, Beauty Routines for Anti-Aging and Acne-Prone & The Importance of Organic Skin Care

What are the different skincare routines that we can implement for anti-aging or for acne-prone skin? David Brooke shares about Skin Essence and guides us through the importance of organic skincare. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode83. Topics Discussed in this Episode:All about Skin Essence OrganicsWhat inspired David to create his own skincare brandThe toxic ingredients in conventional skincare products that you want to avoidWhy plant oils are better than traditional creamsThe different Skin Essence products and when to use themSkincare routine for healing and supporting acne-prone skin Key Takeaways:The best thing about an oil is the more you use it, the richer it is.When you put a proper oil formulation on your skin, it helps you achieve the pH balance. If you have oily prone skin, the best thing you can use is oil because your skin will not try to create more of what doesn’t need it. If you have dry skin, you need rich hydration that goes deep into the skin. When it comes to anti-aging, you need vitamins, minerals and enzymes to enter into the skin and not just sit on the surface. So many skincare lines are made with synthetic ingredients that are not only harmful but ineffective. Synthetic ingredients are fake. You can’t get real results from fake things.Your skin is a living organ, therefore, it needs nourishment. Action Steps:Read the ingredients of the personal care products that you’re purchasing before you make your purchase. If it’s ingredients you can’t put in your mouth, don’t put it in your skin.Cleanse your skin twice a day, morning and night. Make sure to remove your makeup. David said:“If you want to be healthy, you’ve got to eat healthy. If you want your skin to be healthy, you’ve got to use healthy ingredients.”“If you want to be healthy, you have to make healthy choices. And the only way to make healthy choices is to make informed choices.” Thanks for listening! Important Announcements:My NEW BOOK, The 30-Day Hormone Solution, will be shipping is less than a month! 86: Understanding Histamine and Healing from Histamine Intolerance

What do you do when you have histamine intolerance? Board-certified doctor of natural medicine, Dr. Becky Campbell shares insights from her book The 4-Phase Histamine Reset Plan. So if you’re dealing with any histamine issues, this episode is perfect for you!You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode86Topics Discussed in this Episode:What is histamine? What happens when we can’t break down histamine properly? How can you test for histamine intolerance? What are examples of high-histamine foods and histamine-liberating foods? What are the common causes of histamine intolerance? What is the link between thyroid and histamine? What is the connection between stress and histamine? How can you meal prep when you have histamine intolerance? Key Takeaways:Histamine is something that we need in the body. Its main role is to help you get rid of allergens. One of the enzymes responsible for breaking down histamine is diamine oxidase (DAO). You can test for histamine intolerance by testing for DAO, although it’s not very reliable. The best way to test for histamine intolerance is to eat foods high in histamine. If you get any new symptoms or your current symptoms increase, you most likely have it. The follow-up to that is to remove those foods for a week, and if you start to see a reduction of those symptoms, that’s when you know you have histamine intolerance. The common causes of histamine intolerance:Mast cell activation syndromeGluten intoleranceLeaky gutVitamin deficienciesGut infectionIrritable bowel diseaseGenetic mutationsLeftovers are a very big trigger for people with histamine intolerance because the longer the food cooks and the longer the food sits, the more histamine is being produced and the more bacteria is being produced. Action Steps:Test for histamine intolerance.Cut out high-histamine foods in your diet. Dr. Becky said:“One of the best ways to get rid of histamine intolerance or to really, really manage [it] is to test your gut, see what you’ve got going on in there, and kill those infections.” “High estrogen levels really can drive histamine in the body. It can really raise histamine levels.” Thanks for listening! Important Announcements:Join our FREE 5 Day Sugar Detox Challenge! 79: How to Sync Your Cycle with Nutrition, Movement & The Moon

What does the lunar cycle have to do with your menstrual cycle? Registered holistic nutritionist and medical exercise specialist Jenn Pike educates us on how we can sync our cycle with the moon and helps us understand our bodies and ourselves in a whole new light. You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode79. Click here to listen on iTunes, Stitcher, or Spotify: Topics Discussed in this Episode:What it means to sync with your cycle and your hormonal rhythmsThe different phases of your cycle and how to understand themHow to sync your nutrition, movement, and exercise with the different phases of your cycleHow to sync with the lunar cycleWhat to pay attention to when you’re tracking your cycleThe different dietary and nutritional approaches that will support your hormones and your periodHow you can have that “talk” with your daughter about sex and getting her periodWhat “simplicity” means and how you can create more simplicity in your life Key Takeaways:As women, in terms of our cycle, we have four very distinct phases that we are moving through on a week-to-week, month-to-month, and day-to-day basis.MenstruationThe follicular phaseThe ovulatory phaseThe luteal phaseThe rhythms of our internal cycle as women predicate a lot of the shifts in how we feel.Tapping into the four phases of the moon is a cool way to learn more about yourself and your body. Most women typically cycle with the new moon, where they get their menstrual cycle during the new moon.During the new moon time, your energy will be lower. It’s typically not the best time to be doing a lot of group-based exercises. The waxing phase of the moon is that period when you’re moving more into your follicular phase. It’s a great time to set new intentions and to honor your desire to move more. The full moon phase is when we tend to feel bolder, more confident, passionate, and excited. This is the time where a lot of women are ovulating and historically, the time when most babies are conceived and born. The waning moon is the longest period in the moon cycle, which is symbolic of the luteal phase. This is when your energy starts to lower down and you start to feel that call to slow things down. One of the biggest lies we’ve been told about our cycles is that it’s going to be the same forever until you no longer have it. If your cycle comes early or it comes really late, you need to reflect on the past months and see how well you’ve been taking care of yourself.Stabilizing your blood sugar is so critical when it comes to your health overall. Regardless of what your goal is, when you’re working with a great holistic practitioner, the top two priorities they’re going to have for you are to make sure your digestion is working really well and that your blood sugar is stable.  Action Steps:Have awareness of your cycle by connecting the differences in how you feel to your hormonal rhythms.During the new moon time, slow down and take a rest. Nourish yourself and pay special attention to self-care. Do things that are more restorative and calming to your nervous system like yoga and walking.Listen to your body intuitively, especially during the waxing phase of the moon.Track your cycle.Don’t skip out on your regular Pap smears. Jenn said:“One of my big wishes is that part of a woman’s journey in her body is that she would actually be able to also work with a pelvic floor physiotherapist… to learn the landscape of her body.”“Simplicity is not about things being simple… Simplicity is that we are moving through life and through these different elements of our body and our health, but our approach is not rigid.” Thanks for listening!Important Announcements:If you’re an essential oil newbie and you’d like to get started ordering either an oil kit or want to try some oils, reach out to me at samantha@holisticwellness.ca.Connect with me over on Instagram, @holisticwellnessfoodie. Are you someone who’s struggling with an autoimmune disease or know someone who is? If so, then this episode would be really helpful for you! Learn some helpful strategies and solutions for autoimmunity from Dr. Nadia Saleem as she shares her knowledge and expertise on the subject, as well as her own healing journey from Hashimoto’s.You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode54. Topics Discussed in this Episode:Nadia’s struggle with Hashimoto’s and how she took her health in her own handsThe steps to healing from Hashimoto’sWhat an actual diagnosis of Hashimoto’s is and what women need to look for in their blood workSome of the commonalities among women who have Hashimoto’sProgestin vs ProgesteroneThe dangers of progestin-only birth control pillsHow to tell if you have estrogen dominanceHormone replacement therapy versus bio-identical hormonesWhere to start if you have a hormonal imbalance. The impact of fasting on hormonal healthWhy it’s difficult for women to lose weight when they’re in menopauseKey Takeaways:Traditionally, what people are testing for when they do their blood work is TSH and maybe T4 if people are lucky. But the things we really need to look at is TSH, T4, T3, reverse T3. And then the two thyroid antibodies that are most commonly looked at anti-TPO and anti-TG. And until we see all of those numbers together, we really can’t make a true diagnosis for Hashimoto’s.Some women have actual values of TSH, T3, and T4 that are fine but still have elevated antibodies. We look at that as just an immune system issue.A lot of Eastern Europeans tend to have Hashimoto’s because of the radiation. There are a lot of hormonal birth control pills and IUDs that have progestin. What people don’t realize is that progestin will increase breast cancer risk and actually make estrogen dominance worse. The non-negotiables when it comes to autoimmunity are nutrition, sleep, lifestyle and stress management, and mindset and mental/emotional work. Those have to be in place for you to get anything else under control.Action Steps:Build a healing community around you of people you can trust and who can truly hold you accountable.Try to eliminate, or at least minimize, the stress from your life.Have your blood work done.Test your hormone levels and test for estrogen dominance. Samantha said:“Wherever you are on your health, you must do the uncomfortable work. You just have to dive in and begin right where you are because there is no right time to begin and your health doesn’t wait for the right time.”Nadia said:““We don’t want to wait until your antibodies are in the thousands to start working on them, because chances are, they will get there, and why wait until they get there?”“No matter what condition we’re looking at, any type of autoimmune condition, until we get the stress under control, it’s a futile battle… So the stress has to be number one.”Thanks for listening!Important Announcements:Join the Metabolic Reset Program! 96: From Boobs to Pubes - How to Use Castor Oil for Detoxification and Hormone Health

Did you know that castor oil is good for detoxification and hormone health? If you’re looking to support your hormones, castor oil is it! Listen in as I talk about the many ways you can use castor oil from head to toe.You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode96 Topics Discussed in this Episode:Castor oil’s chemical composition and its benefitsThe different ways to use castor oilThe benefits of massaging castor oil all over your bodyKey Takeaways:Castor oil in a non-volatile fatty oil derived from the seeds of the castor bean plant.Castor oil is used to boost lymphatic health and circulation, and to support immune health.Castor oil can be used to treat constipation when ingested.Studies suggest that many of the castor oil’s benefits come down to its chemical composition. Almost 90% of its fatty acid content is a rare compound called ricinoleic acid.Castor oil contains beneficial salts and esters that mainly act as skin conditioning agents.Castor oil is good for cuts and sunburns.Castor oil is great for hair growth.Castor oil is known to benefit your breast health and all the way down to your ovaries.Castor oil also helps decrease menstrual cramping and breast tenderness. Most people tend to avoid oils to cleanse the skin because they think it’s going to make their skin more oily, but using plant oils is really the most beneficial way to clean the skin and really restore your natural radiance.Action Steps:Avoid using vegetable oils for cooking.Mix castor oil with a little bit of jojoba oil for skin care. This works really great for taking off your make-up.Mix some castor oil with a little bit of coconut oil (1:1) for sunburns. This also works as a natural lip balm.Hydrate your skin with a quarter cup of castor oil with a three-quarter cup of either olive oil or jojoba oil. This is a great moisturizer from head to toe.Try growing your eyelashes by applying castor oil on them using a mascara wand.Use castor oil mixed with coconut oil as a hair mask for strong, shiny hair.Rub the castor oil all over your body, from boobs to pubes.Avoid using the castor oil during your period as it increases circulation and lymphatic flow.Make a castor oil pack:Take a piece of flannel, approximately the size of your hand and saturate it with high-quality cold-pressed castor oil.Lay the flannel on top of your liver (located on the right side of your body, just under your ribs) and place a hot water bottle on top of it. 51: The Vagus Nerve - How It Impacts Your Digestion, Breath, Detoxification and Brain + How to Activate It with Simple At-Home Strategies

What is the vagus nerve and what are some simple strategies that we can do to activate it? Get a load of some really amazing information from Activate Your Vagus Nerve author, Dr. Navaz Habib. Enjoy! You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode51. Topics Discussed in this Episode:The vagus nerveSome common signs of vagus nerve dysfunction. The effect of stress on the vagus nerveThe four major functions of the vagus nerveStrategies and tips to activate the vagus nerveWhere sleep and digestion come into playAutoimmune conditionsKey Takeaways:If you have poor vagus nerve function, you will experience poor digestion, inflammation, IBS, issues of liver detoxification, even autoimmunity.12 to 24 hours after you eat a meal, you should be eventually releasing the waste of that meal. Optimally, around 16 hours is the best amount of time. When you don’t have a gallbladder, what’s actually going on is you’re living is going to be extra stressed in being able to push out bile and get toxins out of the body but help to absorb the fats. The four major functions of the vagus nerve:Afferent functionParasympathetic functionMotor functionsSensory function to a portion of the earOne of the tools that you can use to see if the vagus nerve isn’t working well is the tone of voice. If you know somebody that has a very monotonous voice and they aren’t able to raise pitch or go up and down with their voice, then that is a sign that the signaling in the vagus nerve is actually quite poor because the muscles aren’t being used correctly. We can actually use auricular acupuncture to treat vagus nerve dysfunction.Gargling is a great tool for activating the vagus nerve. But you have to gargle the right way, up to the point that you tear up. If you’re not able to tear out of our eyes, you’re probably not activating the nuclei inside the brain stem of vagus enough.Heart rate variability is actually a direct sign of vagus nerve function.People that sleep on their right side tend to have higher heart rate variability and tend to be better nose breathers.Action Steps:Monitor your bowel transit time. If it’s too fast or too slow, that’s a sign that the vagus nerve is not doing its job correctly.Get auricular acupuncture treatment to stimulate vagus nerve activity.Practice gargling every morning and evening, in the right way.Make sure that you breathe through your nose, not through your mouth. Try using Breathe Right strips or a mouth tape.Make sure that you chew your food very well and that you’re not eating under stressed circumstances.Go away from the stressful environment of your desk or your work station and get out and do something a little bit different. Be in a calm, relaxed environment. Before you eat, do some humming or chanting or some deep breathing exercises to help activate the vagus nerve. Navaz said:“What the vagus nerve really is, is the major connection between the gut and all of the organs inside our body directly to our brain. It is the gut-brain axis… It is essentially the controlling pathway by which our body is able to recover, rest, digest, and actually function optimally.”“You are what you eat, digest, absorb, and don’t eliminate… If you’re not absorbing it, it’s not going to get into your body, it’s going to get into your cells, and then it’s not doing the job that it needs to do.” Thanks for listening! It’s amazing for getting out all sorts of fat-soluble compounds and even water-soluble compounds. The only way to get rid of cadmium effectively is through sweat.Foods that are great for detoxifying include raspberries, flax seed, broccoli sprout, cilantro, and parsley.Mushrooms are amazing immunomodulators. The most important thing for the immune system is sleep.
