#205: Busy vs. Productive (And How To Make The Shift)

When you're scheduling your day, when you're writing your to-do list, when you're crossing stuff off that list, when you running around like a chicken with your head cut off, are you in fact just being busy? Or are you actually being productive. For today's episode of Life Made Simple, we look at the difference between being busy and being productive. I also offer you a new way to view your time and how you spend it. I then offer you some actionable tips on how to make the shift from being inadvertently too busy to being intentionally productive. Just a little warning: I say the word "priorities" A LOT during the episode... because *spoiler* it's definitely a big factor. #5: Top Organizing Strategies and Secrets Revealed!

This week's episode focuses on simplifying and organizing your home. If you don't already know, I have been a professional home organizer for over 15 years in Seattle... and I've seen it all! I've worked with so many different kinds of people. I've worked with packrats, hoarders, even minimalists, people from different countries and cultures, different backgrounds and careers, families, the elderly, children, bachelors, even a rocket scientist! And through it all, I've learned that everyone is sooooo different, with different personalities, different preferences, and different temperaments. I've really had to come up with various action plans and solutions to custom fit each family and individual. But, even though my organizing sessions are different depending on the unique client I have that day, there are still a handful of tips and tricks that are tried and true... strategies that I consistently use with everyone. It's those top tips and tricks that I talk all about in this show. I also reveal the "5 Steps to Organizing Your Home" that I use with each of my clients to organize just about any space of their homes. Key Points: Organizing takes TIME. You have to schedule adequate time to tackle any organizing project. Start in one room, preferable an "easy to organize" space for instant gratification. The space may look worse before it gets better, which is ok... sorting can be messy! FOLLOW THROUGH and finish with one space before moving on to another. Organizing is all about CATEGORIES. Follow my "5 Steps to Organizing Your Home" to tackle any area of your house. Once you completely organize one room, don't let clutter from a disorganized room creep into the clean space! #4: Quick Tip On How To Get Things Done

This is our very first "3 Minute Thursday" episode of the Life Made Simple Podcast! What do you have on your to-do list right now that you've been avoiding because it just makes you cringe? Any daunting awful chores that you keep putting off, but you KNOW they really need to get done? Maybe it's a pile of dirty laundry, a sink full of dirty dishes, or days worth of mail to sort through. On today's brief episode, I introduce you to a simple solution that might help: a timer. Just a simple timer... maybe an old kitchen egg timer, a stop watch, or even just a simple app on your phone. While it does seem really simple - and I'm sure you've heard of this technique before - setting a timer to tackle certain chores can help keep you focused, motivated and targeted on the individual task at hand. I also mention a book written by Francesco Cirillo called the Pomodoro Technique. The book pretty much offers a method in which you take a series of 25 minute work sessions with 5 minute breaks. He calls those "pomodoros", which means tomato in Italian because the egg timer that he used in college was in the shape of a tomato.  After 4 pomodoros, you then take a longer 15-30 minute break. #2: Why Is Change So Hard?

As a Professional Home Organizer and lifestyle coach, it is not only my job, but it is my passion to help people make changes in their lives and homes to become happier and healthier. I've always considered myself to be an advocate for change. But, unfortunately, change isn't easy - for any of us - even if it's for the good. In this episode of Life Made Simple - Episode#2 I plan on taking a look at exactly WHY it is so hard to make good changes in our lives. All of us in our lives have something that we wish would be different... something that we wish would be better.  We all have bad habits that we wish we could change. It could be something regarding family, like maybe you want to be more patient as a parent or be a better spouse. Or maybe you want to make a change in your home, like get it more organized, keep a  cleared off kitchen counter, or keep up with your laundry. Maybe the change you want has something to do with your career. Or even your finances. Maybe you want to stop wasting money and start saving for a down payment. Or maybe the change you want has to do with your health; you want to eat better, exercise more, maybe lose a few pounds.   Whatever it is, we all have something in our life that isn't as good as we had hoped for or expected, something that we want to change for the good. If you had the opportunity to make something better in your life, why wouldn't you take it? If you had the control to improve your life in any way, why wouldn't you take the necessary steps to do so? Why? Well, because CHANGE IS HARD. But why is it so hard to make changes in our lives if it helps us to be happier or healthier or more successful? It's because of this simple truth: in order for a person to change, the pain and discomfort of their current situation needs to surpass the perceived discomfort of making the change. Tune in to the full episode to hear exactly what this means and how it applies to you. We also go over the 7 questions you need to ask yourself that can guide you to the path of making a lasting change in your life. #197: Organize All Your Trinkets, Tchotchkes, And Other Randomness (ENCORE EPISODE)

Organizing your home is all about playing "The Category Game." Most everything falls into specific categories that then have specific homes. Where do you put those sort of things? When you come across something that doesn’t fit one of the obvious categories, it’s easy to get stuck, frustrated, and overwhelmed. If a big project is a priority to you, then you have to consistently schedule and plan adequate chunks of time to dive in and tackle it. There's really no way around it. It's a process. Try to trust the process. In our last episode I gave reason as to why you might want to schedule big chunks of time, but if that's not feasible for you, then maybe you need to start small, which is so much better than not starting at all. Have you ever heard that quote "A year from now you will wish you had started today"? #51: A Must-Have Tool To Stay Motivated Everyday!

Like I often talk about on the show, the key to simplifying your life is to figure out what's really important to you, focus only on those things that really matter, and let go of anything and everything that doesn't.  In order to have the life you've always dreamed of and become the person you've always wanted to be, you must put your time and efforts into pursuing your dreams, goals, and everything you value... and somehow let go of anything holding you back. And that's what we talk about today. On this episode of Life Made Simple, I talk about one amazing tool that will empower you to focus on what's really important in your life so that you can push forward and accomplish all your goals, dreams, and anything that you aspire to be. This one tool can be a total game changer if you give it a chance.  I started using it about two years ago and it's completely changed my life. #111: How To Declutter Your Mind (PART 1)

You know I love talking about how to simplify and declutter your house. As a professional home organizer, I've dedicated my life to helping people let go of all the clutter laying around their homes... all the stuff that eventually sucks up their space, their time, and energy.  I want to help people exchange all the unnecessary physical clutter in their homes for serenity, peace and happiness. But at times we need to consider a different kind of clutter. I'm talking about the non-physical type of clutter that we all have in our lives. Today, I talk about mind clutter. The clutter that we have complicating our brain. More specifically, the negative thoughts that fill up our minds and fog our vision. Unfortunately, for many of us, a cluttered mind can be a lot worse than a cluttered home or workspace. When your mind is cluttered with negative thoughts, you can easily feel stressed, anxious, restless, unfocused, and overwhelmed. And we all know that the process of decluttering our homes isn't always easy. But decluttering your mind, can seem almost impossible!  It’s not as if thoughts are just laying around, waiting for you to tidy them up. It's not like you can just simply pick through them all, find the good ones that should be kept and then toss the unwanted ones in the donation box. I wish it were that easy. But the mind isn’t like an inbox that you can just sit down and sort through. It's more complicated than that. Or is it? Negative thinking patterns are something that I've struggled with many times throughout my life. Through my own experiences and with all the research that I've done over the years, I now want to share with you what I've learned when it comes to simplifying a mind that can easily be cluttered with negative thoughts. #43: How Do I Let Go Of Gifts I Don't Really Want? (Ask CarlaRae)

Have you ever had this problem? Someone gives you something that you don't really like - or you don't really need - and yet somehow you feel bad about telling them. So you reluctantly keep it. You hold onto the gift, and out of obligation you allow it to take up space in your home. Or, you get the courage to return it to the store (if it's returnable) yet then feel sheepish and guilty about it. And heaven forbid, the gift giver ever ask about the missing gift! Because I'm sure you would be mortified if you had to tell them you no longer have it. Maybe it's an issue of already having too many. Or maybe whatever it is it's just “not your taste.” Or maybe it's something you simply don't have room for. Or it's something you'll probably never use. Or maybe, you have an item that someone gave you a long time ago, that you really did love at some point, but you no longer use or enjoy it for whatever reason. Or maybe the so-called gift is something that was once special to a member of your family that you have somehow inherited. This is a dilemma we have all struggled with at some point in time. Over the years, there have been so many gifts that people have given my family that ended up  sitting around unused or crammed in the back of a closet or hidden in a box in the garage because I felt too guilty about returning or donating them. I totally get it! What do you do with gifts that you don't want? I actually have so many thoughts on the topic of gifts and guilt, that we decided to divide this episode into two different parts.  For this week's episode, I talk about the awkward feelings we all feel when we receive an unwanted gift and how to navigate those feelings. Then, I talk about whether or not you should let go of unwanted or unused gifts. We also look at the guilt that inevitably comes with that and how to get past it. For next week's Part 2 episode, I'll talk about whether or not you should tell the person that you're letting the gift go, and what you can do if the gift giver has hurt feelings about it all. During Part 2, I'll even give you some ideas on how to prevent unwanted gifts from coming into your home in the first place and how you can be a better gift giver yourself. #143: Meal Planning Made Easy

What is meal planning? Well, meal planning is asking the question "what's for dinner" once for the whole week, instead of asking it every night. You then go shopping for and sometimes even prep the ingredients ahead of time. I'm just going to be honest with you. I have a love-hate relationship with meal planning. We've all heard it before, planning out meals for the week helps to save money. It can help save time by cutting down on extra trips to the grocery store.
