Language & animals

We discuss language and animals and how by design, language acts as a weapon against animals perpetuating speciesism through demeaning terms like ‘you cow’ or by laundering terms that hide cruelty, for example, a 'processing plant' instead of a slaughterhouse. We also have categories of language to label species as belonging or not belonging - for example, native, pest or feral - and a species can switch catgegory depending on our human agenda for the landscape.  Speciesism means the assumption of human superiority leading to the exploitation of animals. Addressing this language can be a powerful form of activism. Our guests are Alex Vince from Animal Liberation NSW and Alana Bacon, Melbourne-based animal activist & Animal Justice Party member. For more work on language and animals by Alex Vince from Animal Liberation NSW, see his talks below: (& stay tuned for his most recent at the 2018 Animal Activist Forum!)The Pest Epiphet: https://archive.org/details/AlexVinceAnimal Activicts Forum (scroll to bottom:) http://www.activistsforum.com/resources/Joan Dunayer links: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFiRc2Jixtchttps://www.amazon.com/Animal-Equality-Liberation-Joan-Dunayer/dp/0970647557

Terry Hurtado - The animal rights movement in Colombia

This is a presentation given by Terry Hurtado, an environmental & animal rights activist in Colombia, at the Decolonizing Animals conference in New Zealand in July 2019.  "Colombia had a very strong welfareist tradition linked to dog and cat shelters, and to some extent, the welfare of horses used for pulling wagons. New generations took reasonability to fight against spectacles in which non-human animals were used, like bullfights, horse parades and circus displaying new ways of advocacy, and bringing in innovative discussions for the country. The new ways of advocacy, as activism, brought a shift in how organization members perceived their role. The way the public and the media saw organizations that worked for animals, changed as well."Decolonizing Animals conference  https://aasa2019.org/Photo credit:  Alejandro Sánchez Lariccia

Jacy Reese - The End Of Animal Farming

This podcast is of a recent presentation given at the University of Tasmania.  "Reese will trace out a roadmap for how humanity is transitioning to the end of animal farming. The timeline has four stages: Foundation, Revolution, Stigmatization, and Follow-Through. Reese will trace out the most important developments of technological and social change in each of these stages, such as the advent of clean meat (real meat made without animal slaughter), a shift in outrage against factory farming alone to outrage against animal farming as a whole, and a shift from individual diet change (e.g. veganism) to a society-wide trend towards animal-free food production. The talk will also explore what in general makes social movements succeed and how the end of animal farming will spark fundamental changes in the human-animal relationship.Jacy is the author of the upcoming book, The End of Animal Farming, which illuminates humanity's upcoming transition to an animal-free food system. Jacy is the Research Director at Sentience Institute, a think tank researching the expansion of humanity's moral circle."Jacy Reese  http://jacyreese.com/Sentience Institute https://www.sentienceinstitute.org/

Lawrence Pope - An advocate for flying foxes

Lawrence Pope is back in the studio talking about flying foxes.  As the president of the Friends of Bats & Bushcare group, Lawrence is one of Australia's foremost advocates of this magnificent creature.  At the time of this interview, he's also caring for two orphaned flying fox pups.  Across the eastern seaboard, flying foxes are either being deliberately driven from their roost sites, separated from their pups, shot in orchards, trapped in fruit tree nets, starved to death, electrocuted on power lines, snagged on barbed wire, or perishing in heatwaves & bushfires.  And if that's not enough, they're also losing their habitat to land clearing. Friends of Bats & Bushcare  https://www.parkconnect.vic.gov.au/Volunteer/group-details-public/?id=d7d85384-dc4b-e711-813b-e0071b676d01Flying Fox Supporters  https://www.flyingfoxsupporters.com.au/
