Mary's Last Soliloquy

Cultivating the Next Generation of Compliance Officers-Barbara Boehler

Lisa Beth Lentini has worked in the U.S. Federal Government and is currently the Chief Compliance Officer and Co-Chair of the Deluxe Enterprise Risk Council, and one of her greatest passions in life is to help foster greatness in others. On this episode, Lisa talks about focusing on what matters, and why kindness is so important — to others, as well as yourself. Why is it so important for you to champion other women, including in our industry? There aren’t enough champions for women out there yet, and it's also about being the kind of person you want to be. Being kind and supportive is just as important in professional relationships as it is in personal relationships. Do you have any ideas on how we can be better at doing this? Carve out a little bit of time for thankfulness and gratitude. Speak up and recognize the greatness that you see in others even when they may not see it in themselves. Or take the time to meet with someone and share what you wish you’d known, or provide connections. What do you think it means to have it all? It’s not possible to have it all at the same time. Not that Lisa Beth would want to, because having it all would mean never being present and truly dedicated to the things that matter. Instead, it’s about focusing on what matters to you personally. Compliance programs are not one size fits all, and neither is life.How do you balance your multiple roles in life, from motherhood to compliance practitioner? There’s no such thing as work-life balance because you’re constantly deciding what wins and what loses. Instead, integrate your priorities in a way that makes sense in your life.Savor the small moments, especially the things that go right.Find a way to let go of the disappointments and things that go wrong. Give yourself a little dash of grace.Be kind to yourself. If you’re not kind to yourself, you can’t display that kindness to others. How do you alleviate mom guilt? Let go of what everyone else’s perfect looks like. Check your internal messaging, turn off negative thoughts, and say: I am good enough. I am doing amazing things. I am managing in ways that many other people would struggle with. How did you prioritize selecting volunteer opportunities? If you’re saying yes to everything and giving little pieces of yourself everywhere, you lessen your impact. Lisa Beth had to make some tough choices, but as in gardening, she says, sometimes you have to cut back to grow. Tell us more about your mindfulness-based approach. Lisa Beth shares some of the practices they have at work where they take the time to recognize each other. It goes so far, and it’s free: it costs nothing to tell someone their work was terrific. It deepens the relationship and allows for a lot of progress in terms of interpersonal interactions within the team and outside the team. What are your key tactics for keeping all your balls in the air and all your plates spinning? When you can, outsource. (This can be home activities, like a cleaning service.)When you can, delegate.Ask for help, and give help when you can. Help will be there for you if you’re ready to give it as well.Find laughter. They discussed what it is like to go into law and compliance as a second career – Lisa started out work life in politics before going to law school as a young mother,  then working in health law in private practice before joining us at Fresenius Medical Care as the Chief Compliance Officer of the North America business.  Lisa gave advice for those wanting to get into healthcare compliance. Lisa gave her views on the benefits of proactively asking for opportunities at work to make your ambitions known.  We acknowledged that while this might be viewed as an aggressive move or maybe a staff member would be nervous about the reception if their requests were rejected, that overall this is a good tactic if you will for signaling to a manager that you are hungry for more.  While the manager may not be in a position to grant you the precise request at the given time, at the very least it will show an attitude for wanting to develop and better yourself and the manager will now be conscious of what you’re looking for and look for other ways that may get you there if what you have suggested will not work for the moment. Kimberly Kaminski is the Vice President and Chief Ethics Officer at BAE Systems Inc., a global aerospace and defense contractor, and she’s here on the show today to talk about coming into compliance with a tech background instead of a legal one, what it’s like to work in defense, and the golden nuggets she’s gained along the way. From tech to complianceKimberly started as an electronics technician after receiving her degree. After 3 decades, she had the opportunity to build a compliance program from scratch. Next came the chance to join BAE, and with the great reputation they had, she was excited to come aboard.Being a tech expert gave Kimberly a good framework for understanding an organization and insight into the requirements to help build products for customers. Being a non-lawyer, she was able to bring a different perspective into the mix, including the different nuggets she’d collected from learning the trade and working with people on the floor. Women in tech and compliance fieldsThe legal team at BAE has over 60% women, and they have a female chief diversity officer. Young women entering the workplace are looking upward to seek role models. This is good, but we can do better. People are at the heart of BAE’s success, so they focus on attracting and keeping diverse talent, and have programs to help employees stay on the cutting edge. A strong industrial base is not just about facilities and products, it’s about people. What was your leadership experience like both in this community and in the Twin Cities area in promoting ethics and compliance?Kimberly is part of a few organizations: The Defense Industry Initiative, The Capital Area Business Ethics Network, and the Twin City Compliance and Ethics Network. Sharing best practices is a hallmark of the compliance community. This is an industry that wants to give everyone the best tools to do right and help businesses, regardless of what they do; it’s very easy to reach out to colleagues and ask for help should you have an issue.Balancing family life and career challengesKimberly’s husband passed away 12 years ago, and family and colleagues were instrumental along the way of raising her four boys, now in their early 20s. What are your tips for women starting out in the profession? It’s extremely important to be proactive, so always ask questions if you’re not sure, and do as much research as you can into the industry you’re working in and the company you’re working for. Millennials often face the challenges of stereotypes in the office. What are your observations, as someone who’s a part of that group? Many of the stereotypes stem from how you manage your millennial staff, and the thing about stereotypes is that they only prove true when people believe them to be true. For example, in Samantha’s current office, a large proportion of the team are millennials, and they don’t suffer the stigma of being in that category as much as people in other companies. Also, negatives aside, millennials are also known for being tech-savvy and good multi-taskers! What are your tips for working with millennials? In order to let millennials thrive in a company, show them that you value them. Millennials appreciate recognition, being able to use their skill set, and having the freedom to work on projects to the best of their abilities instead of being micromanaged. Be approachable as a manager and allow them to be involved in the decision making processes.How can mentors counsel and advise millennial women in compliance to really add value to their career advancement? First, give directions and clear expectations as to what is expected of millennials without hindering the creativity and positive attributes that make them the way they are. Second, speak to them on an equal level, with mutual respect and value. Finally, highlight their strengths and guide them on how to apply these strengths in everyday work. What does the modern-day junior employee look for in a mentor? A mentor provides positive feedback and guides you down the right path. They look out for you, they see opportunities that you wouldn’t be able to see yourself, and provide real life examples and experiences to teach you how you can add value to the company you’re working for. They should also feel invested in the success of the mentee, possess compassion, and are willing to grow themselves in the profession as well. What’s something you wish you’d known two years ago? Stephanie Davis is the Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer for the Volkswagen Group of North America and she’s here to share what it’s like to be the only woman — and sometimes, only American — in the room. Stephanie came to Volkswagen not from a law firm, but from KPMG. How did that impact her career?  An academic background gives a lot of credibility, especially in German companies, as Germany is a country that prides itself on amazing education.In the US, it was the consulting background that was really helpful, because it’s given Stephanie the lens to approach problems more collaboratively. Where legal will say “no, you can’t do that” and end there, she might say, “no you can’t do that — but here’s what we can do instead,” because she understands how businesses are run and knows companies still need to make a profit. Her job is to make sure they do it in the most ethical and integral way. What is it like to be a woman in compliance, and what is it like to be a woman in compliance with a company that has a headquarters in Germany? Stephanie comes to her job bringing a distinctly different perspective: she hasn’t worked at Volkswagen her entire life (like many in the company have), she’s a woman, and she’s American. But she learned that you can’t let “being the only x in the room” be an issue. If you fixate on that, that’s all you’re ever going to be. She had to give herself permission to not focus on the fact that she was the only woman or American there. She was in the room for a reason. She was in the room because she had value. No one else was questioning her presence, and it took time for her not to question it either. In all of her otherness, she has come to realize: “It’s too much stress to be anybody but who I am.” On speaking in the roomStephanie speaks at many conferences and talks for women’s groups so that “one day, we don’t have to do it anymore.”She postulates that women’s conferences and groups grew out of this world of golf games that we saw our fathers participating in growing up, where all the work was done on the golf course. Women weren’t really involved — and so we’ve decided to build our own golf courses. But she hopes we don’t have to do it forever. We all bring something to our organizations. We shouldn’t have to fit a “bucket” of what our careers must look like: partner by 35, x amount of dollars in the bank by 40. How can you make sure you’re not left behind as a woman in compliance? Join us on this episode with Amii Barnard-Bahn, an executive coach and strategic advisor. Today we’re talking about breaking through the glass ceiling, making sure you’re getting your fair share, and stepping up into leadership.Breaking through the glass ceiling Women need to support each other. In terms of breaking through the glass ceiling, Amii shares a pledge of support she took: Don’t tear each other down. Say yes to helping and connecting each other and not filtering support. Reinforce women’s voices. Help each other get credit. And in addition to women supporting women, it’s really critical for all leaders to be aware of their impact on other people. Leaders succeed or fail based on two things: how well they work with others, and how well they know themselves. Negotiating salaries Know the going market rate for your job in your geography. Amii gets this data from three places: asking other colleagues what they’re making, asking for pay ranges during job interviews, and through consulting salary surveys. These data points are usually good for two to three years and have them in your back pocket during negotiations. Women don’t talk salary, and we need to be more comfortable sharing this. Come to the bargaining table with objective information, and definitely stay polite and professional. You may not get the bump, but it’s always worth a shot. Equitable salaries for different genders Companies can do their part in ensuring that there is no gender-based pay inequity by: participating in and purchasing quality salary survey data, having accurate and updated job descriptions for their jobs, having job families that clearly outline the succession and promotion opportunities within the growth span of the job, and conducting an equity audit and evaluating whether there is a material pay disparity between genders, race, or age. If you’re discriminating, you need to know it and take action. Looking the part Good grooming is important, and that doesn’t necessarily have to include a lot of makeup. Dress appropriately so that whoever you’re speaking to can hear what you have to say and are not distracted by the way you look. This speaks to a broader issue of developing and cultivating an executive presence no matter what level you are at the organization. And don’t forget about your posture, your tone of voice, your eye contact, and most importantly, projecting warmth. Being ready for leadership Amii quotes Jack Welch: “Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.” Managing is easy. Leading is hard. When people get promoted, it’s difficult to let go of the things that made them successful in the first place: being the technical expert and having the right answer. Now the focus is no longer on accomplishing the task yourself, but helping other people around you achieve their tasks. Have you ever thought of publishing a book on compliance? Deena King is the author of Compliance in One Page and is currently the Director of Compliance at Texas Woman’s University. Today on the show, she’s discussing her book publishing process and what it’s like working at higher education, as well as sharing her best advice for writing a book and springboarding your success. On writing about complianceDeena was part of the team that designed the initial Brigham Young University compliance program. When she transferred to NV Energy in Las Vegas, she noticed that doing compliance at a university was similar to doing compliance at a utility and decided to document this pattern. This eventually became her book which she finished in 2015.Challenges in publishingNo one really tells you how to write a book — so that was a challenge in itself — and because she was new to the compliance profession, Deena decided to self-publish. She learned tons about the many moving piece publishers take care of, from design to editing and beyond. Her next challenge is self-publishing the second edition of her book, which she hopes will be out early in 2020. Advice for aspiring compliance authorsIf you see something no one is talking about and you feel you can add to the conversation, write about it. Start with articles in magazines to help you get your thoughts together and give you some direction. Then write an outline for your book and go for it!Working at Texas Woman’s University (TWU)Being an educated woman is a big, important value for her. So while TWU in itself is a great university (and the reason she decided to take the job), the cherry on top was that she was going to be working for a university whose primary goal is to educate women.Soft Skills vs KnowledgeKnowing how to work with people is an absolute must in compliance, as you will be working with all kinds of people in many different areas. You can’t live without soft skills. But the legal and regulatory foundations are important too, because content matters. Advice for springboarding yourself to successWhen Brigham Young University was going to start their first compliance program, Deena knocked on her director’s office door, sat down, and said: “I think I’m really going to like this compliance thing. Can I be on this team? The CIA would always use three — and oftentimes more — lines of defense when it comes to protecting data, and this is something she carries with her until today. In April of this year, Lisa joined Pearson as the Director, Compliance for the Americas.  When Lisa learned about the role, she started researching the company, and Danette.  Danette had been shortlisted for the Women in Compliance awards, both in her individual capacity and for the compliance team.  This was one of the things that made this such a great opportunity for Lisa, and as you will hear in the podcast, it is one great example of the connections that are built in compliance teams and in the compliance community as a whole.In particular, Danette talks about how she became interested in this compliance role while at Pearson, and how her involvement in compliance grew from a perception of compliance as primarily gifts and hospitality, to a fully-formed ethics and compliance program. She discusses one of the team's first major initiatives - a global third-party due diligence project, and the support she received from Pearson leadership and the Board.  This project spanned the entire globe, and is a model for a due diligence initiative.Danette is based in Atlanta, Georgia, and leads a team where many team members are in different locations or remote (and none in Atlanta).  She discusses her approach to leading this type of team, and how she helps the team to evolve and grow in a time of change within the company and global compliance challenges.

Episode 40-Renata Moreti, on Curating an Amazing Ethics and Compliance Program by Using Outside Interest and Experiences

There is nothing more inspiring than hearing about someone who has been there and done that.  In today’s episode we feature Kris Robidoux who was involved in the first two anti-bribery cases in Canada and led the way for those after her. Kris is a decorated Legal and Compliance professional with the title of Queen’s Counsel to her name as well as being named one of the Top 100 Women in Investigations by Global Investigations Review and One of Canada’s Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers by Canadian Lawyer Magazine. Mary was introduced to Kris by Compliance colleagues Jay Rosen and Jonathan Armstrong.  It was the beginning of a wonderful friendship.  Kris, Jonathan and Mary would go on to work together as panelists at conferences sharing global Compliance updates with able assistance from Jay who facilitated the interactive aspects of their sessions.  Throughout her time knowing Kris, Mary has considered her to be one of her Compliance role models and knows that she will always be received with a warm smile and words of wisdom when meeting Kris.In this episode, Kris shares her thought leadership on observing gaps in the market coupled with timing, to position yourself to lead the charge in new areas of the law, a top consideration for companies that may have to deal with the legalization of cannabis and its impact on company policies, her biggest lesson learned transitioning from a compliance and investigations practice in a global law firm to a compliance role in a corporation, dealing with possible retaliation cases when conducting investigations and working through challenges of colleagues undermining Compliance. We close this episode by canvassing the effects of microaggressions in the workplace and how you can play a part in lessening these detrimental effects.

Compliance Trailblazing with Kris Robidoux

We recorded a special episode of Great Women in Compliance this week.  A roundtable session was held at the Gaylord Resort and Convention Center at National Harbor -  right from the SCCE CEI.  This year’s conference attracted nearly 1900 attendees and was packed full of interesting sessions from substantive topics to soft skills to motivational and inspirational, which we hope our session “Starting the Great Women in Compliance Podcast.  How an Idea from the SCCE 2018 CEI Evolved into a Podcast and What We Learned” was for some of the attendees. Podcast hosts Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley were joined for this episode by two popular and prominent Great Women in Compliance, Amii Barnard-Bahn and Ellen Hunt to share insights, observations and learnings from this year’s conference.  We talked about a few of the sessions of the conference and the key takeaways from each, top tips for networking specifically at conferences to make the most of the in person experience, developments in relation to women on boards and overall highlights from attending the conference. Lisa and Mary would like to extend sincere gratitude to the folks that introduced themselves at the conference, supported our session, podcast and supplied us with feedback.  It was a wonderful experience meeting so many of our LinkedIn connections including several Great Women in Compliance in person and we very much look forward to seeing you all again next year.
