The Best Episodes Ranked Using User Listens

Rank #1: 86: Wait, but what IS Intuitive Eating?

Podcast cover
Read more

Replay! This is the episode that kicked of the RD Real Talk podcast Intuitive Eating series—10 episodes all about the principles, and evidence, behind Intuitive Eating (IE). Evelyn Tribole is one of the co-authors of the book on Intuitive Eating, and dishes about how the idea came to be, why she wrote it (with Elyse Resche), and what that was like in the mid-90s. For reference: It was first published in 1995!

If you haven't already, buy the book and dig in

For now, tune in to hear it all from the OG IE dietitian herself.

Rank #2: 49: IE Principle 1 - Rejecting the Diet Mentality

Podcast cover
Read more

Sumner Brooks, an eating disorder dietitian and founder of EDRDpro, joins me to discuss the first principle of Intuitive Eating, Rejecting the Diet Mentality. As long as the diet mentality is prioritized—or as Sumner puts it, we make food decisions based on the outcome expected—it will be nearly impossible to eat intuitively.

ETA: There seems to have been an issue with the audio recording, so Sumner's voice sounds a little off. Technology isn't always our best friend. :)

While listening to this episode, think about your own diet mentality and what drives the food choices you make every day. Are you avoiding or working toward a certain outcome (e.g. weight, "health", or something else)? Or are you trying to tune into your body's signals of hunger, fullness, satisfaction, etc? (More on all of that to come!)

It may be uncomfortable to realize that even though you may not be following a "diet," there are still many filters, or rules, by which you make food decisions. We know how that feels. We've been there. Stick with us.

We give examples of the various levels of diet thinking, and how to work through this principle to bring yourself some food freedom. It helps you build the foundation on which you'll continue to build your intuitive eating habits throughout this series.

Angie Hasmann, program director for the University of Virginia Health System Dietetic Internship, is on the show today! If you're into a choose-your-adventure type of program, she's your gal. Also, we could all take a tip from the way she went about getting her first job. BOLD. And I like it. In addition to directing the UVA internship, she's a boss dietitian in a clinical setting. Oh, then we dive into bariatric surgery and how one study suggests this "weight loss surgery" is linked to "lower risk of cancer."

Bonus: She adds job-searching and resume crafting tips, helping us all out as we navigate this career world.

Rank #4: 48: Drop the diet - IE Series Introduction, with co-author Evelyn Tribole

Podcast cover
Read more

Now is not the time to start a new diet, or "get back on track"—neither is tomorrow, nor the day after that. It won't work. But we have something else for you, that just might save your sanity.

Introducing: RD Real Talk's first series, on Intuitive Eating

Evelyn Tribole, MS RD is the co-author of the book Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works. It is NOT a diet; it is not an eating plan; it is not a set of nutrition rules. And it is not simply eating when you're hungry, and stopping when you're full.

Evelyn helps me kick off a 10-episode series on Intuitive Eating (IE), in which I cover each of the 10 principles with fellow dietitians and therapists. She takes us back to 1995, when the book was first published, and how she and her co-author, Elyse Resch, finally decided enough was enough. No more putting clients on diets, no more weight loss plans, no more pretending that either of these things "work" for people. They questioned and challenged traditional dietetic practices, found the research to support their paradigm, and put it out to the world.

She's NOT into this whole "clean eating" movement, wonders when taking pride in the way we eat became important to our identities (a la Orthorexia), and indulges a burning question I had about her Olympic Trials Marathon run (🤓).

I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did, and can't wait to share the rest of the IE series with you! Stay tuned.

Shanna Hutcheson, aka the dietitian behind Wellness for the Win. She stopped calorie counting in January 2017, and wrote a blog post about it on her site. We talk about her process of personally, and then professionally, incorporating the principles of Intuitive Eating that resonate with her. We talk about why she changed her tune, and embraced a life without calorie counting. We talk about her adorable doggos. And we talk about how it feels to enter this non-fad-diet world and feel a little clumsy at first—Am I saying "this" right? Does this resonate? Does it help?

But first, I start today's episode by diving into a hot topic: The latest research touting a Low-Carbohydrate diet for "weight maintenance". Fun, right?

[Replay!] Jessica Jones, dietitian and co-host of Food Heaven podcast, joins me to chat about her career, and then, Whole30. January seems like the most popular time for people to "try" the Whole30, so we're here to try and help you avoid that path. I put out a call to social media, asking people why they've done the Whole30, and what they liked about it, to try and integrate various perspectives.

Tune into our conversation to learn why Whole30 isn't the best way to adopt new habits like meal planning, trying new recipes, and eating to feel better. There are many other ways to do all of the above, without extreme food restrictions or rigid food rules.

We address: meal planning, recipes, digestive issues, sugar addiction (or lack thereof), PCOS, and the hidden threat of deprivation.

Podcast cover
Read more

This is the first RD Real Talk coaching episode! These coaching episodes are an extension of the Intuitive Eating series, exploring the concepts with listeners who reached out and agreed to have a one-on-one recorded session. (All personal details are kept anonymous.)

In this coaching episode:

A dietitian is about to switch jobs and will now have a new schedule, and will be able to step away from weight-loss work. She's realizing that the diet mentality has a stronghold on her approach to nutrition. She dabbled in weight loss for her wedding, and wrapped much her of dietitian identity up in certain healthy eating practices and messages.  She's curious about intuitive eating, but struggling with how to implement the principles for herself.

Jennifer McGurk joins me to discuss Intuitive Eating principle #2: Honoring Your Hunger. At the time of recording, I was pregnant and she had just given birth, so we start with some real talk about the IE lessons these experiences will teach you! If you decide to skip ahead, we get into the principle and how it's essential to intuitive eating. It's also essential to have acknowledged your diet mentality, and put any goals of weight loss (or "management" aside) in order to really hear and heed your body's hunger signals.

Jennifer is an eating disorder specialist, so part of our conversation touches on how this principle is used for eating disorder treatment, when appropriate.

Rank #18: 57: IE Principle 9 - How to Enjoy Exercise

Podcast cover
Read more

Robyn Nohling, dietitian and Family Nurse Practitioner, is one of my favorite gals to chat with about all things intuitive eating. She has written about the ways in which she shifted her approach to exercise on her blog, The Real Life RD. We have both trained for endurance running events, and think of exercise a little differently now that we do work in this space. We also both work with women recovering from Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA), during which exercise may have to take a back seat, or be stopped entirely. We dive into what it means to enjoy exercise, feeling the difference between exercising for the psychological benefits instead of in hopes of physical changes.

Our culture’s obsession with suffering and powering through workouts in order to “gain” fitness or prove that you’re strong shapes doesn’t foster “health” in every sense. Listen to this episode to step back and take a hard look at your habits and patterns with exercise, and try to keep an open mind to approaching it with a little more self-awareness and care.

We've both had personal experiences that taught us a lot about sports nutrition, and eventually found intuitive and mindful eating practices.
