81: What happens when you stop counting calories

Shanna Hutcheson, aka the dietitian behind Wellness for the Win. She stopped calorie counting in January 2017, and wrote a blog post about it on her site. We talk about her process of personally, and then professionally, incorporating the principles of Intuitive Eating that resonate with her. We talk about why she changed her tune, and embraced a life without calorie counting. We talk about her adorable doggos. And we talk about how it feels to enter this non-fad-diet world and feel a little clumsy at first—Am I saying "this" right? Does this resonate? Does it help? But first, I start today's episode by diving into a hot topic: The latest research touting a Low-Carbohydrate diet for "weight maintenance". Fun, right? You can read a summary of the research here, but I encourage you read the whole thing (full access on BMJ).  And if you're interested, join the email list for updates on the Weight-inclusive Nutrition and Dietetics events! -- -- -- Have you left a review on iTunes yet? 49: IE Principle 1 - Rejecting the Diet Mentality

Sumner Brooks, an eating disorder dietitian and founder of EDRDpro, joins me to discuss the first principle of Intuitive Eating, Rejecting the Diet Mentality. As long as the diet mentality is prioritized—or as Sumner puts it, we make food decisions based on the outcome expected—it will be nearly impossible to eat intuitively.  ETA: There seems to have been an issue with the audio recording, so Sumner's voice sounds a little off. Technology isn't always our best friend. :)  While listening to this episode, think about your own diet mentality and what drives the food choices you make every day. Are you avoiding or working toward a certain outcome (e.g. weight, "health", or something else)? Or are you trying to tune into your body's signals of hunger, fullness, satisfaction, etc? (More on all of that to come!)  It may be uncomfortable to realize that even though you may not be following a "diet," there are still many filters, or rules, by which you make food decisions. We know how that feels. We've been there. Stick with us. We give examples of the various levels of diet thinking, and how to work through this principle to bring yourself some food freedom. It helps you build the foundation on which you'll continue to build your intuitive eating habits throughout this series.  Questions? 27: It is a VERY small (dietetic) world

Emily Wetzel joins the show from Chicago! As a contractor with Dietitians on Demand, she wears many dietitian hats. Emily and I chat about the small world of dietetics, which relates to her advice for any and all new dietetic students and interns. We answer two listener questions, then dive into why consumers are more interested in sugar than meat (or cooking with "raw ingredients").  Questions:  1) In my internship, there were only a couple of rotations where I felt RDs were a valued member of the team. What can we do as a profession to change this and make it better for the next generation of dietitians? 2) I know for sure that I want to work in the field of food and nutrition, but I am fairly sure I am not interested in clinical. I'm worried I won't enjoy it at all, and it might trigger past ED behaviors. Should I purse the RD certification? In the news:  Nearly half of US consumers are trying to reduce the sugar they eat (FoodNavigator) Younger consumers, however, are more interested in eating less meat. Either way, the top barrier to change is feeling tempted by these foods, and the perceived cost of healthy eating. How can we help? Emily Wetzel, RD LDN | @HealthyHappy_U

[REPLAY] 85: Why to avoid a Whole30 (Anytime)

[Replay!] Jessica Jones, dietitian and co-host of Food Heaven podcast, joins me to chat about her career, and then, Whole30. January seems like the most popular time for people to "try" the Whole30, so we're here to try and help you avoid that path. I put out a call to social media, asking people why they've done the Whole30, and what they liked about it, to try and integrate various perspectives.  Tune into our conversation to learn why Whole30 isn't the best way to adopt new habits like meal planning, trying new recipes, and eating to feel better. There are many other ways to do all of the above, without extreme food restrictions or rigid food rules.  We address: meal planning, recipes, digestive issues, sugar addiction (or lack thereof), PCOS, and the hidden threat of deprivation.  Most of the things we talked about: Food heaven show on YouTube, and the Food Heaven podcast “I guess the Whole30 is very much still a thing”, on my blog Marci Evans on Food Addiction: Food Pscyh & RD Real Talk (#26) “Why Fear of Sugar Addiction May Be More Toxic Than Sugar Is” by Rebecca Scritchfield RD PCOS Nutrition resources: Julie Duffy Dillon & Rachael Hartley Other stuff: Your host, Heather Caplan: HeatherCaplan.com, @heatherDCRD, @RDRealTalk Have you left a review on iTunes yet? 48: Drop the diet - IE Series Introduction, with co-author Evelyn Tribole

Now is not the time to start a new diet, or "get back on track"—neither is tomorrow, nor the day after that. It won't work. But we have something else for you, that just might save your sanity.  Introducing: RD Real Talk's first series, on Intuitive Eating.  Evelyn Tribole, MS RD is the co-author of the book Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works. It is NOT a diet; it is not an eating plan; it is not a set of nutrition rules. And it is not simply eating when you're hungry, and stopping when you're full.  Evelyn helps me kick off a 10-episode series on Intuitive Eating (IE), in which I cover each of the 10 principles with fellow dietitians and therapists. She takes us back to 1995, when the book was first published, and how she and her co-author, Elyse Resch, finally decided enough was enough. No more putting clients on diets, no more weight loss plans, no more pretending that either of these things "work" for people. They questioned and challenged traditional dietetic practices, found the research to support their paradigm, and put it out to the world.  She's NOT into this whole "clean eating" movement, wonders when taking pride in the way we eat became important to our identities (a la Orthorexia), and indulges a burning question I had about her Olympic Trials Marathon run (🤓).  I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did, and can't wait to share the rest of the IE series with you! Stay tuned.  Questions? Check out the series page on my website: heathercaplan.com . Subscribe to the weekly newsletter. 58: IE Principle 10 - Finally, We Talk About Nutrition

Lindsay Stenovec, dietitian and host of The Nurtured Mama podcast, joins me to talk about the tenth principle of Intuitive Eating. At the end, nutrition is brought back into the picture! This book was authored by two dietitians, after all.  Lindsay and I talk about why it's important that nutrition is taken OFF the table while clients work on eating intuitively. Diet culture has hijacked our thoughts around nutrition, making it nearly impossible to feel "good" about eating anything but fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Orthorexia, an eating disorder defined by an unhealthy fixation on eating healthy foods, is an eating disorder that's hard for some people to even recognize. Dieting is the norm.  In this episode, we hope to help you understand why it's OK—healthy, even—to put nutrition thoughts away while you work on other aspects of Intuitive eating, including self-trust and self-awareness. And it's OK to be interested in nutrition again, eventually.  Lindsay's work and Nurtured Mama community can be found on her website, nutritioninstincts.com . *Support the show and help fund our next RD Real Talk series: patreon.com/rdrealtalk* Questions or suggestions for what's next?
