In this episode we’re talking to Elaine Pofeldt, former senior editor at Fortune Small Business magazine.

Elaine has dedicated her career to writing about entrepreneurship for publications such as Crain's New York Business, Fortune, Money, Inc., CNBC and many others.

It offers a road map to creating a seven-figure, ultra-lean business by sharing the strategies of entrepreneurs who have approached and hit $1 million in revenue before adding employees.

From their experiences, you’ll learn how to come up with the right business idea, how to develop concrete strategies you can use to turn your vision into reality, and how to scale your revenues and profits once they start rolling in.

In the episode we break down those themes and discuss the barriers stopping women from securing venture capital, the considerations you need to make before outsourcing work and what to start with first and why it’s more possible now than ever before to make a profitable business that serves the life you want to lead.

It’s all in the list.

You’ve probably heard that before but how intentionally have you been about growing the email subscribers for your business.

Building an engaged list is one of the few changes we made that helped take our business to the next level.

Because remember, all those followers you’re trying to attract on Instagram?

You don’t own them.

Mark Zuckerberg does.

Rank #4: 7. How To Turn Ideas Into Action with The Detox Kitchen Founder, Lily Simpson

Podcast cover
Read more
The Detox Kitchen founder, Lily Simpson is a master at turning big ideas into realities. When she wanted to transition from working in property development to catering, she simply asked her boss if she could create the food for one of their next corporate functions. To get her catering business started, she simply put a list together of 20 people she wanted to work with, Googled the companies and reached out. Six months later she had left her job and was catering up to seven events per week. The rest, as they say is history.
For Lily, it wasn’t about relying on industry relationships – she didn’t have them. Instead, her story is the perfect example of what happens when you break things down, do the research and have the patience to wait for an idea to fully developed before moving to the next. This episode will break down how you can do the same.

Rank #6: 37. The Art of Running An Intuitive Big, Small Business With Susan Connor

Podcast cover
Read more
There is so much misinformation out there about entrepreneurship right now; from one size fits all formulas, glorification of the hustle and outdated ideas of what a successful business actually looks like.

That’s why we’re so thrilled to have textile designer, Susan Connor on the podcast today. She is the perfect example of an entrepreneur who has steered away from convention and tapped into her intuition to create a profitable business on her own terms.

In this episode, you will learn why Susan decided to follow her instinct and close her first business despite the success she was experiencing. We talk about why entering into an industry as outsider can often be your competitive advantage and the questions she asks herself before she creates anything.

Susan also shares why historically she’s said ‘no’ to big opportunities when they’ve felt out of alignment and the strategies she’s used instead to grow her client base in a slower, but more fulfilling way.

As Tony Robbins famously said, running a business is 80% mindset and 20% strategy so explore that. She talks candidly about the resistance that has popped up as she’s grown her business beyond her wildest expectations and the mental work she’s had to do to overcome that and truly step into her power.

Rank #12: 17. What An MS Diagnosis Taught This Magazine Owner About Taking Risks

Podcast cover
Read more
Today on the show I’m talking to my friend, Alison Engstrom, founder of Brooklyn-based, print magazine, Rose & Ivy.
From the very first discovery of her mother’s copies of Vogue, she was entranced by print and moved to New York from Charleston, South Carolina with the hopes of securing a role in the beauty department of one of the women’s magazines. But this all happened against the backdrop of the recession. Nobody was hiring and it was the start of teams shrinking and the closure of many of the beloved magazines we’ve all grown up with.
It’s what promoted her transition into marketing before ultimately closing that door and going full circle in creating a print magazine of her own.
Alison and I talk about what it was like being laid off, not once, twice but three times from marketing roles and how, looking back, it seems like the universe had always been trying to point her in a different direction.
She talks candidly about being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a month before her wedding day, and how her diagnosis gave her the confidence to follow her bliss and pursue her dream.
We also talk about how she started the magazine with no industry contacts and is now working with leading designers and rising talent on covers, only two and a half years in.

Podcast cover
Read more
Today on the show, we're talking to Lizzie Evans, founder of much loved London-based lifestyle store, Smug.

Lizzie was 23 years old when she started the store. She was freelancing in graphic design in Australia when she got the idea for the business, playing with her style and fine tuning what her visual identity is.

Huge success came from her mix of carefully curated antique furniture, stationary pieces from brands like Rifle Paper Co, long before it became the big brand it is today, along with a slew of co-created exclusives with brands that publications and those in the know went crazy for.

Instead of opening stores across the city, she launched the Smug website and focused on getting creative about what she could do with one flagship store.

We talk about how the business has evolved and what it was like starting a business as a 23 year old with nothing more than optimism and a vision. She talks about some of the challenges she faced after the business’s initial growth spurt, what she’s learnt about delegating and some of the early hiring mistakes she made. We also talk about the power of community in business and why her podcast, How To Curate Your Life, was always about connection, and not about making money.

Rank #18: 90. Pricing, Money Mindset + Creating Offers That Sell

Podcast cover
Read more
As anyone who’s run a business with attest, scaling a company isn’t simply down to strategies and tactics. As money coach Whitney Hansen explains, so much of it is working through the limiting money beliefs that keep us stuck; the kind that keep us playing small, afraid to ask for the sale and continuing to undervalue what we have to offer.

In this episode of the show, Whitney walks us through exactly how she was able to unravel and heal childhood traumas around money so that she could not only get out of debt but also how she was able to educate herself about money in the process and now make a living teaching others what she’s learned.

On top of providing practical advice like the important metrics to track in your business, how she organises her time using the 80/20 rule, she walks us through how to set revenue goals, healthy money habits to implement to improve your relationship with money and how to reinvest your profits in a way that no only moves your business forward about also feels good.

Imposter syndrome and beliefs about not having enough skills or not being competent enough to sell your expertise as a service are just a few of the things that came up for her when she got started. She shares how she was able to unravel some of those beliefs so she could increase her pricing and broaden her impact.

Rank #20: 32. How To Outsource And Create Systems In Your Business With Mandi Holmes

Podcast cover
Read more
In this episode of the show, we’re talking to Mandi Holmes, founder of She Can Coterie, an agency that supports creative female founders to scale their businesses by pairing up them with skilled contractors for done-for-you services.

As any small business owner knows, in the beginning you’re doing everything but real growth means breaking away from the myth that you’re the only person that can manage certain tasks, and instead, investing in automations, workflows and people to free you up to focus on the bigger picture.

In this episode, you will learn:
- The tasks you can automate cheaply and quickly using technology and the tools Mandi and her team swear by.
- The tell-tale signs that you’re ready to work with contractors and what tasks to delegate first.
- Tips and tricks on how to create workflows and systems that you can use to on-board new clients or team members.

We go deep on systems and planning but we also explore what’s working in her business too. She shares her process for bringing in new leads into her business, how she manages sales calls and strategies for reducing churn in a subscription-based model.

She also shares how often she raises her rates (the number might surprise you!), how she knows when it’s time for an increase and how she communicates changes like that with existing clients.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or like you don’t know what to focus on to push the needle in your business, pay attention because Mandi will take you step-by-step through strategies to reduce your to-do-list and delegate while remaining consistent and keeping standards high.

The more consistent we are in sharing our offers through our marketing, the more we can sell and the more people are impacted by the power of our work.

In this episode of the show, we’re challenging the idea that scaling your business needs to be slow and the story that it needs to be hard. Because neither of that was true for Kundalini business coach, Brianna Rose.

In under a year, she was able to take her business from ideation to half a million dollars in revenue, simply by connecting with the impact the service she offered had on her life and inviting other women to work with her to usher in the same types of transformations.

In our conversation, Brianna talks about why redefining success was such a huge piece of calling in the rapid growth she’s experienced. She shares how she’s been able to overcome fear to consistently get in front clients she can help, who are ready and excited to invest in what she has to offer. 97. Sell Your Story Not Features: How To Use Storytelling To Attract Ready To Buy Clients

Podcast cover
Read more
Storytelling in sales isn’t anything new. Any great salesperson will tell you that it’s stories, rather than facts and features that have the most powerful impact on how people feel about a product or service and whether they have a desire to buy.

The hard part is often knowing exactly which stories we need to tell and how to share them in a way that positions to client or customer as the hero.
Califlour Foods founder Amy Lacey is a master of storytelling. In fact, much of the traction her business experienced in the beginning was down to her ability to share how her experience of being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and looking for healthy gluten alternatives is the foundation of the brand’s origin stories. Today, both Amy’s and the stories of the brand’s loyal followers, have become the fuel for their growth.

A story Lacey posted about a woman who lost 169 pounds, thanks in large part to eating Cali’flour crust for seven months, went viral on the social media platform.

The $50 Lacey spent on a Facebook ad to promote that post was well worth it. Her story sold $124,000 worth of pizza. It quickly catapulted the company from generating $7k months in 2016 to closing January 2018 doing $20million in sales.
