Podcast cover

Let's be honest about podcasting. Doing a podcast can be an amazing experience, but when it's not going well, it can also be a huge drag.

The majority of podcasts get fewer than 200 downloads per episode.

If you have a podcast, I don't want you to fall into the trap so many podcasts do -- I want you to succeed, have fun with your podcast, and reach people. In this episode, I share a story that I hope inspired you to keep moving forward with your podcast, even if it's not currently where you'd like it to be.

In This Episode:
  • The worst part of podcasting?
  • What bartenders, black jack dealers, and (some) podcasters have in common
  • Why podcasters lose touch with their audiences
  • When podcasting becomes a drag...
  • The real reason people listen to podcasts
  • Meeting your idols
  • Developing a connection with podcast listeners, blog readers, and others who consume your content

I fell off the wagon. There's no excuse for leaving you hanging, but I've been so caught up with Build A Big Podcast and reworking the manuscript for my upcoming book, I let a few things slide, one of which was RED Podcast.

But I'm back. Just finished editing a three-part series with Jeff Sanders that follows him from getting a book publishing deal, to writing the book, to releasing the book. The book is The Free-Time Formula and it's available now, but this series was recorded over the last year, when Jeff was going through the process, so you'll get the real information about what was happening and what he was feeling, not revisionism, which is usually what you get afterward since we soon forget the challenging parts.

I'm also in the process of figuring out my own book publishing process, which I'll be talking about here over a few episodes. I just finished what I think is the final version of the initial draft (I've had five of them) and am working on editing everything to get this book out within the next couple of months or so. Like my series with Jeff, you'll hear about this as it's happening in real time, so you'll get authentic information about what the process is really like.

And it's going to be much bigger than just "book publishing" discussion... This is a new market for me and it's a bit scary to make the jump, so there's going to be a lot of talk about the mindset of releasing something to the public, resistance, and more. If you've ever released a book (or attempted to), I think you'll get a lot out of these episodes.

In This Episode:
  • Where I've been for the last three months
  • My upcoming book publishing "trilogy"
  • The "behind-the-scenes" episodes in the pipeline

Affiliate offers and endorsements are common in the online business world and with good reason -- there is a lot of money to be made. However, there is also a "dark side" of affiliate marketing that few talk about and many involved will deny.

Are you part of this? If so, is it costing you more than you're bringing in?

In This Episode:
  • How Amazon deals with biased book reviews
  • What people look for when you endorse something (and what they don't care about)

I'm very close to launching a book on how to market yourself via podcasting and I'm taking you through the process as it happens.

Over the last couple of months, one of the things I've been working on is securing somebody to write the foreword for this book. I've reached out to a few people and FINALLY heard back from somebody...sort of. I heard back from somebody he works with.

That experience is what I talk about on this episode.

If you're new to RED Podcast, let me catch you up...

I'm in the middle of talking about launching my new book on how to market yourself via podcasting. I started writing it almost four years ago and it's everything you need to know about how to boost your authority (and business) via podcasting, how to grow your podcast, and how to attract the perfect audience for what you do.

I thought this book was finally going to be out in a couple of months. And it still probably could be, but as of now, I've decided to delay that release by another month.

Why? I share details in this episode, but the bottom line is I had to switch out somebody I was going to hire to help me finish things up I'm in process of getting somebody else to take his place.

In This Episode:
  • What to do when the guy you thought you'd be working with isn't able to work with you
  • Content Editing
  • Proofing
  • Scheduling (and Re-Scheduling) just about everything
  • Forewords - A second chance...

Rank #14: RED 250: Book Launch - The Manuscript Is Done

Podcast cover
Read more

I'm about 60 days away (for real this time) from releasing my new book on how to market yourself via podcasting. This is a book I started writing almost four years ago and it's been a challenge to get it out. In this episode as well as the last couple of episodes, I talk about the process of making that happen.

Taking my own advice, and the advice of songwriters in Nashville, I took the last month to give the manuscript for my upcoming book a complete rewrite.

The first draft of this book was about 120,000 words. This one is just shy of 90,000 words. It's tighter, it flows better, and it's closer to being released, but there is still a lot of work to do.

In This Episode:
  • Goals for the manuscript rewrite -- what all non-fiction books should have
  • Time management for a manuscript rewrite and how to get everything done
  • Why my first book had a co-author (and why this book is just me)
  • How podcasting is similar to writing a book
  • RED Podcast 1.0 vs. RED Podcast 2.0
  • The downside of doing interviews on your podcast (there are a ton of them, but this is the big one)
  • Pressure -- why I feel so much of it (more than the usual pressure) to get this book right
  • The "next" step in the book publishing process
  • Test readers and why I chose them
  • Why my title was rejected
  • Book covers and why I do my own (at least the concepts)
  • Are you too close to your work? I may be...

There's a saying in the music business -- "Good songs are written, great songs are rewritten."

Same goes for books. If you want a great book, you need to have somebody (or a few people) help you with editing.

I'm about 60 days away from releasing my new book on how to market yourself via podcasting. This is a book I started writing about three years ago and it's been a challenge to get it out. And on this episode, I talk more about the editing process.

In This Episode:
  • Why this book has taken over three years (so far)
  • A book editing lesson from a print journalist
  • What happens to your manuscript when you work on it too long (and how to fix it)
  • My first editor (and why I'm no longer working with her)
  • The reason the new editors sent my manuscript back to me without editing it
  • Bringing in yet another person to help me with a new outline for the book
  • Why I haven't given up on this book already
