5 Rules of Personal and Professional Branding

This will help you not only stay on brand but keep you focused on hitting your target avatar. If you create content in multiple content streams it gets messy and tends to confuse your audience who will eventually grow to expect a certain type of content from you each week. For example, if you are used to writing long-form content then it’s best to keep that format. Suddenly switching to short-form content might turn off some of your long-time supporters.Be AuthenticOne of the biggest lessons that anyone can learn early on in their brands is the ability to become vulnerable and authentic with their audience. It is extremely difficult to gain a subscriber, attract a podcast listener, or entice a company to work with you. On the other hand, it’s very easy to Have a StoryAudiences connect to people, not to content. If you create a great blog post or write a good book, you may get several people checking it out, but once they get what they need, they will eventually bounce and might never come back. However, if you can find a way to tell your story through your content your audience will be able to connect not with just what they are trying to consume, but with YOU the content creator.Be ConsistentBeing consistent means being consistent everywhere. When you go through the process of creating a brand you take the time to think about your logo, brand colors, fonts, styles, and tone of your product. (and so much more) Consistency is that one thing that makes people remember you.  Think about your favorite soft drink company. What makes them stand out from the pack? Is it the way that their drink tastes? Maybe … but I bet it’s also the way the product looks, or the packaging they use, or the colors and style of their logos.  Consistency is super important when creating your brand kit as well as any content that you produce.  Live Your BrandHave you ever seen a speaker get up and do a big presentation and then get off the stage and do a complete 180 when you meet them?  If you are hyper-focused on what you are doing, being consistent and authentic about your story then you are on the fast track to living your brand.Your audience wants to route for you. They want to see you succeed. They want to know what you are going to be posting next because they want to get to know YOU.  Follow our Podcast and SubscribeView All EpisodesApple PodcastsFollow our HostJeff Bradbury | @JeffBradburyTeacherCast | @TeacherCastJoin our PLNAre you enjoying the TeacherCast Network, please share your thoughts with the world by commenting on Apple Podcasts today? 10 Expert Tips To Help You Build Your EDU Brand

This week at the FETC Conference in Miami Florida, I had the opportunity to meet and reconnect with hundreds of amazing educators and educational technology companies. The time spent here interacting with all of these amazing entities has made me realize a few important things about Building Your EDU Brand. In this episode of the Jeff Bradbury Show, we take a look at 10 Expert Tips To Help You Build Your EDU Brand. Some of these things seem pretty easy. Some of the items on the list might have you puzzled. After speaking with several great educators at the conference this week, it is certain that everyone has gone through these steps and mastered many if not all of them.If you are a blogger, podcaster, speaker, author, or another type of EDU Content Creator, don't forget to vist our podcast homepage and subscribe to the podcast on your favorite podcast player today! If you are a new listener to TeacherCast, we would love to hear from you. Please visit our Contact Page and let us know how we can help you today! The TeacherCast 90-Day Email Marketing ChallengeAt this moment, I'm guessing you might fit into one of these categories:You have a great idea that you would like to get noticed by the educational communityYou are looking to build a distinguishable brand for yourself to get noticed by edtech companies, professional learning conferences, or perhaps … employers. You are looking to take your current website, blog, podcast, book, and/or social media strategy to the next levelJoin the TeacherCast 90-Day Email Marketing Challenge Today! In this challenge, you are going to learn:How to find and target your Avatar to grow your email list. The importance of having a great looking website and how to build the one that attracts eyes on your brand and grows your email list. How to grow a successful Social Media strategy that gets you noticed and grows your email list. How to create a branded professional slide deck for your next conference that grows your email list. How to fight the war on the inbox and what it means for your unopened emails. How to improve your email open rates so that the work you put into your emails gets noticed clicked on.and much more …Reflections From Our Previous EpisodeEpisode 2: 5 Rules of Personal and Professional BrandsBy Hyper-FocusedBe AuthenticHave a StoryBe ConsistentLive Your Brand10 Expert Tips To Help You Build Your EDU BrandIdentify Your Target Audience … EARLYFor so many educators, they create content just to create content and then all of a sudden they call themselves a business owner and entrepreneur. This is almost completely backward from what happens in the non-edu world. In business, you spend months trying to figure out a pain point. Then you try to come up with a cost-effective solution to solve that pain point. Then you learn everything about who has those pain points and you do everything that you can to attract them to your solution. Sounds pretty easy???Successful companies identify who their target market is first and THEN create the solutions.Be An Expert In The IndustryHave you ever listened to a speaker or heard a podcast where someone was "trying" to sound like an expert but you had your doubts? In this age of quick and easy Google search, anyone can read a blog post and become an expert ... so what set's you apart? When creating an identifiable EDU Brand, it's important that you also establish your credibility or authority in the subject. This not only helps people identify with you but gives people a reason to follow what you are preaching on your platforms.Create Content Worth Coming Back ToEveryone can create content. But how many times have you clicked on a link and looked at something for 2 seconds only to agree never to visit the website again? No matter the topic, strive to come up with valuable content that answers the questions your avatar has in a way that entices them to either stay on your site searching for more answers or click on the next post or tweet that they see.Create Value Around Your ContentOnce you know what type of content you need to create, you should take the time to ask what you can do to create value for your content. For example, you might create free content in the form of ebooks, or PDF's that can serve as lead-magnets for gaining email subscribers.Leverage Your PLN To Evangelize For YouDo you have a blog or a podcast? Inviting your inner circle to be a guest on your show or guest blog for you is a great way of not just spreading your platform to others, but it gives you the opportunity to have your guests promote your work.Focus Your Message Where Your Avatar Is … Don’t Chase Your Target AudienceOnce you know who your avatar is and what answers they are seeking, the next step is to figure out what pool they are swimming in. It only makes sense to ask your avatar which social media platforms they are on so you can create an online strategy to attract attention to yourself. No need to play on a platform that nobody is swimming in.Spread Your Message Near and FarI have the opportunity to meet and work with amazing edtech companies and I always ask them the same question year after year ... "Are you going to ISTE?"You'd be surprised at how many companies say NO.ISTE is the largest edtech conference in the United States and for some reason, the company doesn't see value in being where all the action is.Very odd... right? If you are looking to Build Your EDU Brand you should be thinking both locally and nationally when it comes to speaking and marketing. Edcamp's are wonderful and they are all over the place these days. Conferences such as ISTE and FETC draw large crowds but you also have amazing conferences such as NCCE and CUE to check out as well.Have a MentorWhat is the number one thing that all successful people have in common? They all have someone they can talk to. This might be a spouse, a best friend, a religious figure, or family member but they all have someone they can speak openly to about their journey. What else do they have in common? They have professional mentors. A Professional mentor is someone who has gone on the journey ahead of you and can help you travel the road that you are. They might give advice. They might let you fall so that you can learn to pick yourself up. No matter what the situation may be ... if you are going to be creating content, you should reach out to someone who has done the deed before and seek advice ... even when you don't think you need it. It's always good to talk and strategize for that all-important gut check.Don’t Be Afraid Of FailureLet's face it ... nothing is perfect. You are going to have moments of success and you are going to have moments of failure. My personal suggestion to you is to embrace them both and celebrate them both. Most important ... LEARN from them both.Remember the definition of the word FAIL: First Attempt In Learning.Include Your FamilyNo EDU Brand is built without the support of the people who love you the most. One of the most difficult parts of Building your EDU Brand is coming to grips with the fact that so much of your energy will be spent working the business instead of cuddling up next to those you care about. When you include those around you into your journey the rewards are even greater than you can ever imagine.Follow our Podcast and SubscribeView All EpisodesApple PodcastsFollow our HostJeff Bradbury | @JeffBradburyTeacherCast | @TeacherCastExplore these ResourcesIn this episode, we mentioned the following resources:Link 1Link 2Link 3Join our PLNAre you enjoying the TeacherCast Network, please share your thoughts with the world by commenting on Apple Podcasts today? (User Questions)Beginner Question: I have an idea for a brand … now what?Congratulations!, you have an idea for a new podcast, blog, website, or another type of content creating idea. What is the next step? What is the first thing you should do once you have this idea?My personal advice for anyone in this position is to write down everything you are thinking at that moment. This could be done with pencil and paper or perhaps through a digital application such as Evernote, OneNote or even a Google Doc. The most important thing is that you create a place (like a journal) where you can start to put your ideas together. The second thing you should do is find someone you trust and begin having conversations about your idea. You should choose someone who you not only have confidence in, but who you know will give you an honest opinion rather it be positive or negative. This might be a spouse or another family member or even a close friend. After you have flushed out the idea with someone close to you, the next step in the journey should be to seek out someone who might be in a similar field, or even in the same field to talk to them about your ideas and ask advice on their journey. This might help you learn what works and what might not work about your idea. You can certainly take your idea and go into full production mode and it might give you some type of immediate success and gratification, but the best plans always have the best planning.  Step 1: Write down everything you can think of and begin to formulate a clear concept of what you are doing and what you want to doStep 2: Seek advice from your inner circle to get their brutally honest advice on if you are on the right track.Step 3: Seek experts in the field or others in the field you are looking to jump into and ask if they might be able to give you some insights into their journey so you don’t replicate the same mistakes they did.Newbie Question: How to take and receive advice from a mentor even if it might sting a little?Have you ever been really excited about something and when you finally found the courage to sit down and share it with someone their reaction wasn’t exactly warm and fuzzy?Did it make you get angry and frustrated, or did you take a moment to listen and learn why they are giving you the advice that they feel is right for the conversation?Sometimes when we are struck by creative lightning and have taken the time to plan out everything about our new idea we sometimes forget to step back and look at both the micro and macro.Advanced Question: How do you know your email marketing is working? Are you in the middle of reevaluating your current email marketing strategies? Do you send out emails and nobody opens them? Or do you send out a ton of emails with nobody returning any love by signing up for your online courses?Today we discuss:What do you do?How do you know if “it” is working in your favor or not?How do you get help with your Email Marketing goalsFollow our Podcast and SubscribeView All EpisodesApple PodcastsFollow our HostJeff Bradbury | @JeffBradburyTeacherCast | @TeacherCastExplore these ResourcesIn this episode, we mentioned the following resources:Build Your EDU BrandCheck Out The Apps That Make TeacherCastJoin our PLNAre you enjoying the TeacherCast Network, please share your thoughts with the world by commenting on Apple Podcasts today? As the youngest of 5 kids, I often played sports with my brothers and the neighborhood kids in the back yard and rode by bike or ran to get where I needed to go. That passion for exercise carried over to high school and college where I lettered in both volleyball and track. Looking back, there has NEVER been a time in my life where exercise wasn’t a part of my life. To me, it gives me energy and makes me feel good.Over the past 19 years, that passion has helped me discover my purpose which is to empower women to live their best life by giving them the tools they need to look and feel their best. I am so grateful to be able to wake up each day knowing I am part of someone’s transformation, inside and out.Links of InterestHomepage: www.BodyByRuth.comInstagram @bodybyruthPinterest @bodybyruthYoutubeFacebook @Body by RuthFollow our Podcast and SubscribeView All EpisodesApple PodcastsFollow our HostJeff Bradbury | @JeffBradburyTeacherCast | @TeacherCastJoin our PLNAre you enjoying the TeacherCast Network, please share your thoughts with the world by commenting on Apple Podcasts today?
