Today on Lit Up with Angela Breidenbach, Davalynn Spencer visits about the inspiration her family and Colorado lifestyle have on her novels.

Don't miss my insights on attending the Connecting Writers with Hollywood conference and an upcoming new release, Out Of Their Element, a collection of 4 full-length contemporary romance novels by Angela Breidenbach, Robin Lee Hatcher, Vickie McDonough, and Deborah Raney. My book in this collection, Footprints On Her Heart, is in edits now. Look for interviews with the other authors in this collection coming this summer as well. I'll be putting my individual full-length novel out in paperback as the sequel to A Healing Heart.

About Davalynn Spencer: Wife and mother of professional rodeo bullfighters, Davalynn Spencer writes cowboy romance. About Lit Up guest, Linda F. Radke:
Linda F. Radke is the president of Story Monsters LLC and publisher of Story Monsters Ink® magazine. For more than 30 years, she has been ahead of the game in producing and marketing award-winning books for all ages. Clients and the media describe Radke as an industry leader in creativity, innovation, and customer service. She has received numerous publishing, public relations, and marketing awards, including being named "Book Marketer of the Year" by Book Publicists of Southern California. Tireless in her efforts of helping authors make their dreams a reality, Radke's motto is, "You can't compromise on quality. Do it right or don't do it all!"

Radke's foray into publishing began with a desire to print a how-to book to complement the household employment agency she owned. For Radke, teased on more than one occasion about having "printer's ink in her veins," the experience of publishing the book was exhilarating, which prompted her to change careers without looking back. In 1985, Radke launched Five Star Publications, Inc. She went on to add marketing and publicity services, networking opportunities, and special event coordination with the goal to help deserving authors achieve visibility.

A former special education teacher for grades K-12, Radke is dedicated to helping kids develop a love for reading and writing. To that end, she created the Story Monsters Approved! designation program which tells parents, teachers, and librarians they are giving children the very best. In 2014, Radke published her very first magazine, Story Monsters Ink, which has been named among the "great magazines for kids and teens" by School Library Journal. Since that time, Kids Can Publish has been merged with Story Monsters Ink. On the heels of the success of the Story Monster brand, in 2016, Radke founded Story Monsters LLC to bring all of her services together under one umbrella. Today, Radke continues to target and brand the services Story Monsters LLC offers to authors, children, parents, teachers, and librarians with programs such as the Dragonfly Book Award Contests, School Express Press, SchoolBookings.com, and AuthorsandExperts.com.

Radke is also a member of the Children's Book Council, National Federation of Press Women, and Independent Book Publishing Association. Based in Chandler, Arizona, Linda F. Radke is passionate about her work and is invested in serving her community. Radke's personal hobbies include camping, photography, and enjoying time with her family and their German Shepard, Riley.

Rank #5: How to write biblical fiction

Podcast cover
Read more
Lit Up! with Angela Breidenbach welcomes Rachel S. Neal as we discuss how to create your own book covers, write biblical fiction, tips on critique groups, and discuss Rachel's new book, When Jonah Ran.

Books mentioned:

When Jonah Ran

How to Mend a Broken Star

A Healing Heart

Tips on making your own cover art:

Use a design program like Photoshop or Affinity. Buy stock art, if you're not an artist: Dreamstime, Thinkstock, Lightstock, etc. where you can buy photos. Look for royalty-free, read the details before purchasing to know the license (how many copies, what type of use, etc.) Watch out for the allowance to (or not) manipulate a photo for a unique look such as changing the color of the dress or the model's hair.

Tips on writing biblical fiction:

About Rachel: Rachel S. Neal is an author living under the big sky of Montana. Her books are self-published and provide a means to fund charitable causes. Samaritan's Purse and Answers in Genesis are two of her favorites. Where you might happen across Rachel: Anywhere her feet can go. She likes to walk, taking her camera along for an adventure. The Oregon coast is a favorite, walking with her husband, sand between her toes and a pocketful of treasure. In her garden- planting, dividing, weeding, pruning, and just being. Anywhere that sells concrete, paint, fabric, glue, or second-hand goods. So many projects, so little time. On the couch beneath a cat, a cup of coffee, notebooks, Bible, or any I-can't-stop-reading-til-the-last-page tale. On her knees, seeking grace that never runs dry...

As promised in this episode, Prociutto Egg Cups Recipe (learned from the Better Homes & Gardens special issue on Mediterranean Diet, April 2018) Spray the inside of a muffin tin, line with prociutto covering the bottom and sides with one layer, crack an egg into the well, slice grape or cherry tomatoes in half and place on top of egg white, drop a tsp. of pesto on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-22 min. Note: The eggs should be slightly unfinished as they finish setting up for a couple of minutes after taking them out of the oven. Each oven is different, so experiment with the doneness to your preference.
