On this week’s episode, we have Katt Philipps joining us to share her journey when she started as a special effects makeup artist after throwing a dart at a map, then becoming a Licensed Esthetician, Master Makeup Artist and founder of Grafin Skin And Beauty by creating fiercely loyal clients.

I am sure you are all wondering what are her secrets in creating such a successful six-figure business on her own so drop everything that you’re doing and tune in now!

For all the links, visit the show notes page: Click here!

Biggest Takeaways from Katt:

“I had learned probably from watching my old boss just how important it was to create a relationship and I just couldn’t leave it so that’s why I started it.”

“My business, I hit six-figures in the first eight months of  being on business. I don’t really know what happened and I think it has less to do with me and I think it has more to do with the amazing men and women that come in into my business everyday.”

“Everything that we do is different for everybody that comes in.”

“Probably what I draw on more than anything else is my schooling in Philosophy. Because in Philosophy, there’s a right ,a wrong and a middle and I think beauty is absolutely that. There’s a left, a right and a middle and the truth is always in the middle. So I think I use that, I mean everyday with every person.”

“With my clients, I don’t do a lot of add-ons. I have a one-price facial. I really have no menu. My menu says it’s your first time in or you’ve just been with me forever. We do just exactly what’s right for your skin every time. And it’s always a conversation.”

“The first time you come in to see me, you’re my client. The second time you come to see me, you’re my friend. The third time you come to see me, if you have no place to go at Christmas, you have a place on my table and that’s how I run everything with everyone that walks into my clinic’s doors.”

“I think if you treat people the way you would your favorite person in your family, they’ll do the same for you and so that’s been the huge portion of it.”

“I can’t survive if I’m your dirty little secret. People need to know about me and it’s really amazing, I think that people love seeing businesses grow when you’re really trying and you’re honest about these are things that you really need. I think that humans will like to raise each other up, makes us feel good.”

“If you help someone out build their own empire, they’ll help build yours.”

“I realized that free doesn’t mean free to anybody, it means it is not good enough.”

“If you have something that’s worth a $100 and you sell it for $50, that’ll never be worth a hundred dollars ever again.”

“I would say that I think it’s really important  to apprentice and work underneath someone else before you try to go off on your own as well. And when you do go off on your own, there’s no need to burn a bridge.”

Episode Highlights and Takeaways:

Recruitment Crisis in the Beauty Business Industry (10:22)

“Over 80% of the employers across the board are finding recruiting qualified and experienced staff really hard.”

“Do I actually believe that there is a shortage of great talent out there? No. I think that we really need to attract that talent a little bit better to our businesses.”

How to Attract the Right Team Members (11:32)

“I know that the right candidates are out there they just perhaps needs a little help finding their way into our salons.”

“As employers, we need to recognize ways to make our business more attractive to the best talent, to those employees.”

How To Tell What Motivates A Potential Hire (24:48)

“As a manager what I try to really understand is what each individual team members tick.”

5 Top Ways To Attract Top Talent To My Business (13:00)

  1. Showing Off Your Business (13:15)

– This is all about your brand.

“For me it is very important . . to attract the right people to our business, we need to be clear about what our brand is.”

  1. Create An Enviable Environment  (16:20)

– This all about the culture and environment of your business.

“What type of environment they are looking for? If they don’t fit in then we will have a total mismatch and it just won’t work out.”

  1. Career and Development Opportunities (19:45)

– This is about investing in staff training and offering self-improvement and self-development aside from simply job and title promotions.

“When attracting an employee, we need to be clear about what our offer is that’s on the table.”

“The sector is so competitive and if we don’t really train our staff, we won’t be able to offer the same high standards, the consistency and the staff will be demotivated and they won’t feel valued enough.”

  1. Recognizing Great Work (22:45)

– This is about reward and recognition. We need to know what makes each employee become motivated.

“We all look forward to rewards and recognition, but everyone has different wants and needs.”

  1. Perfecting the Interview Process (26:37)

– This is where we identify if we are an ideal match.

“This is where the real work comes in, it’s a two-way conversation and at the end of the day the purpose of this process is to determine are we right for that employee and are they right for us?”

What Kind of Questions To Ask During The Initial Interview (31:10)

Sample questions to ask:

  1. “What what is that made you apply for this position?”
  2. “What do you know about us a business?”
  3. “Have they applied to a lot of jobs?”
  4. “Are they really interested in THIS job?”

Next Part of the Hiring Process After The Initial Interview (32:24)

Six Ways of Recruiting by Stefania Rossi (33:52)

  1. Intro (34:12)

– Start with an intro which is mainly talking about themselves.

  • What makes you standout from the others?
  • What do you love about your job?
  • Why do you want to work here?

  1. All about skills (34:26)

– This is where you will learn about their skills, interests and knowledge

  • What are your strongest skills?
  • What are your weakest skills?
  • Tell me about the additional training that you are looking for?

  1. Under Fire (35:31)

– To know how they deal with conflict

  • Have you ever dealt with an upset client and how did you deal with that?

  • What do you think is the best part about working with a team?
  • Do you prefer teamwork or prefer working by yourself?
  • How do you handle it if you don’t want to be part of a team?

  1. The Round Up (37:12)
  •  To see if they have done their homework about your business.
  • What do you know about this business?
  • What part of the business appeals to you?
  • Do you have questions for me?
  • Why are you interested to come work for us?

How Many Should You Interview to Get the Right Candidate? (38:00)

“I could potentially speak to absolutely everyone and I will select it down to usually to about 5 or 6 but it really depends on the caliber of the applicants.”

What Sort of Time Commitment to Put Aside to Be Confident that You Have Hired the Right Person (40:12)

“My advice would be to be commit as much time as possible to hire the right individual.”

But before all that . . .

Let’s revisit one of the most important aspects in every business that you should build amongst your clients – LOYALTY.

But what is loyalty?

Is it still relevant today with all the development of technology where people can simply find the nearest, best priced option available?

How does one build loyalty with their customers these days and how do you reward them for sticking by you?

I am sure you have the same questions above and so I will answer each one of them in this episode – plus I’ve got a free downloadable survey form you can use to get valuable feedback from your clients. I’ll tell you exactly HOW to use it in the episode.

How cool is that?

But that’s not all. . . (cue drum roll please)

I am excited to announce that I will be speaking at the upcoming conference, Professional Beauty London, this month to bring not one, not two but SIX business building workshops over two days!

Head on over to Professional Beauty Business Workshop to learn more and to book your tickets. I hope to see you there!

If you are not able to make it to London to join me for the workshops, I have some VERY exciting news. I will be hosting an event where everyone can attend wherever you are in the world. . .

I would like to introduce something that we, my team and I, have been working on for months.

The Beauty Business Boot Camp!

This is going to be a week long VIRTUAL event . . . meaning that it takes place online!

“Genuine customer service is straight forward for me . . . what would YOU want, how would YOU want to be dealt with in a similar circumstance? ”

Rank #11: BBP 035 : How to Make Your Hard Work ‘Count’ with Chris Cheeney

Podcast cover
Read more

Most of us on the beauty business industry chose this path because it is our passion to create and help our clients look and feel amazing, however most of us have ‘dreams’ when it comes to what we want our business to give back to us, rather than goals in place to allow us to become successful and earn the money we want or even need!

We often neglect the most important aspects of the business which is planning, budgeting, goal-setting, team management and also KPI’s which help us make sure our business is not only running smoothly but is also doing well financially.

Imagine your business after a year or two… do you see it expanding or staying pretty much the same, struggling with costs, expenses, debts or taxes? It’s a scary vision to see your passion turn into nothing because you have avoided to work on the financial aspect of your business.

Never fear . . .

On this week’s episode, our guest is a secret weapon behind successful beauty business owners like Susan Routledge, Phil Jackson and Clare Cockell – all friends of the show! .

His name is Chris Cheeney and it was his wife’s passion that became the trigger for his calling to work with beauty business owners using his knowledge and experience as an accountant.

Now, we are not going to delve deep into the world of accountancy,  but we do share some tips and insights to help you and to make beauty business owners aware that you should not be just “surviving” or “existing” in your businesses,  but is doing well and even making a significant profit!

So if you’re ready to turn your DREAMS into reality for your beauty business then hit the play button to start listening!

For all the links, visit the show notes page: Click here!

Biggest Takeaways from Chris:

“The business was being ran based on passion and based on, you know this power of “I want to do this and I WILL achieve it”, but not on how you should run a business which is planning and budgeting and measuring your performance. So it took a long time for us to sort of understand that and understand what the KPI’s should be to have a successful business.”

“If we hit our targets and we spend how we say we’re gonna spend, then we can see our cash where it’s gonna be in 12 months time.”

“Don’t’ wait until you’ve hit the VAT Threshold to charge properly. Your prices have to be as if you are already VAT registered.”

“It’s not to think of your accountancy fee as a cost. You’ve got to think of it as an investment . .  because it is an investment in your business getting to where you want it to get to.”

“If you find the right accountant that understand you, your personal goals, your business goals , your desires then they’re the people that can really hold your hand, keep you accountable and make sure you get there.”

Remember we were recently talking about goals on the podcast . . .  I hope you were able to plan what you’d like to achieve this year.

However, those are very much YOUR goals . . . but what about your team?

Do they share the same vision as you?

Are they motivated enough to help you reach those goals?

Motivation plays a major role when it comes to team performance. If your team members feel demotivated or lacking in support from YOU, they will likely deliver poor performance which can affect your business and your goals.

It’s a domino effect and you mustn’t take this lightly.

I understand that running a business can be tough but it certainly doesn’t mean you have to do it all on your own – in fact you shouldn’t. That’s why you have a team to support you, tho help you with your success . .  but you have to support them as well.

You need your team working WITH you to give you the best chance of achieving those goals.

So the very first step that you need to take is . . . TO MOTIVATE THEM.

But how do you do that on top of everything else and where do you start?

Well that is exactly what I have for you in today’s episode . . . 10 tried and tested, PROVEN ways to motivate your team.

Episode Highlights and Takeaways:
10 Tried and Tested, PROVEN Ways To Motivate Your Team (3:05)

  1. Create a Pleasant Working Environment (3:33)

“Provide a place for your team to de-stress or hangout whenever they feel the need to relax during their breaks – for that matter make sure your team are taking regular breaks so they don’t burn out.”

  1. Set Goals WITH your team! (4:38)

“Setting a target is one of the very best ways to help in motivating your team, it shows you care about them and about their personal development and that you want them to become successful too.”

  1. Know Their Worth (9:28)

“Treat each individual as part of a team or as a family member and not just some replaceable object. ”

  1. Educate Don’t Punish (10:31)

“Train people well enough so that they can leave, treat them well enough so they don’t want to.”

Not my quote unfortunately . . . Sir Richard Branson said it!

  1. Growth (12:21)

“It’s vital to know each team members desires and goals personally, you also want them to work well AS a team to help YOU achieve your goals.”

  1. Reward Hard Work (13:24)

“Just having the same targets and rewards in place all the time actually becomes less and less motivating OVER time.”

  1. Acknowledge Their Efforts (15:34)

“Even just a simple ‘Thank you” at the end of a long day can mean a huge amount to a member of your team.”

  1. Build and Bond (17:13)

“Build a healthy relationship with each member yourself and foster good relationships between your team too. ”

  1. Train and Develop (18:15)

“Training your team to really become experts will make clients feel at ease because they know they will be in good hands . . . thus creating an even more positive client experience.”

  1. Communicate and Collaborate (19:53)

“One of the most important things to have in a team is. . . communication.”

Running a beauty business can be tough especially if you work with a lot of people and you have to manage and motivate them to make sure they are reaching your goals  . . and their goals all while doing their best to make clients happy..

How do we go about on managing our team, dealing with all the personalities and running a salon at the same time without losing our minds?!

Fear not because I finally found the right person to talk to about this . . .

I’d like to introduce Clare Cockell… a good friend of mine and a very respected figure in the industry. She’s also a judge, speaker, author, the CEO of The Reef Spa, product creator . . .  and the list goes on!

I am truly grateful that she has joined us to share her secrets in building and keeping a winning team for your beauty business which has helped her become so successful in running her business.

So stop what you are doing, sit down, ready your ears and hit play . . . as Clare gives us the 10 Ways to Create and Keep A Winning Team in Your Beauty Business:

  1. Use The Word “TEAM” Rather Than ”STAFF” (7:03)

“I always try to encourage and use the word team and therefore when I’m talking about things with the team is kind of we, and if I talk outside, it’s my team, the team, our team and through that people feel much more a part of the business.”

  1. Hire To Fit You And Your Brand (8:30)

“Hire for attitude and to fit with your brand, to fit with the rest of your team, someone who’s got your ethos, your drive, your wants.”

  1. Know Your Boundaries (11:28)

“You can have these boundaries in place and you can still be nice to your team, be there and be supportive.”

  1. Honest, Open and Trusting (14:20)

“The business doesn’t grow and you can’t achieve more without trusting people, without kind of delegating more”.

  1. Understanding Everyone is Different (18:03)

“I definitely learned kind of working with a bigger team that what works for someone will have to do it in a slightly different way for someone else.”

  1. Narrow Your Goal and Make Sure Everyone is On the Same Page (22:10)

“Knowing that they understand what you want to achieve, where you want the business to go, how you want it it to be perceived and what it is all about.”

  1. Listen (25:34)

“If anyone asks me a question I have to know the answer… I have to answer then and there. The problem with that is often you’d give an answer that you’ve potentially would have not chosen if you’ve thought about it or potentially would’ve not work and you kind of have to change your mind and again, that can be quite frustrating.”

  1. Meetings…meetings! (28:15)

“It is obviously good to have your team meetings every so often…every quarter or every month whichever you prefer and just to ensure again everyone is one the same page.”

  1. Motivation (32:32)

“Obviously, we need to make sure that we stay motivated to be able to motivate the rest of the team.”

  1. Being Confident in Yourself (35:30)

“Everyone has this little demons in the mind that likes to plant these seeds but again working on that to ensure that you’re keeping that under control and believing that you can do it. ”

If you have a business or you know someone who does, you probably know that small business owners wear a lot of hats. And some of those hats are totally great. But some — like filing taxes and running payroll, for example — not so great.

That’s where Gusto comes in.

Gusto makes payroll, taxes, and HR actually easy for small businesses. Fast, simple payroll processing, benefits, and simple management tools all in one place. Gusto automatically pays and files your federal, state, and local taxes so you don’t have to worry about it.

Plus they make it easy to add on health benefits and even 401(k)s for your team. Those old-school, clunky payroll providers just weren’t built for the way modern small businesses work.

But Gusto is. Better yet, now’s the best time to get set up for the new year.

Don’t wait. Listeners get three months free when they run their first payroll. Try a demo and see for yourself at https://gusto.com/bbp.

Rank #19: BBP 058 : Mastering “The Client Journey” with The International Institute for Anti-Ageing

Podcast cover
Read more

We’re on the third installment of the Stock and Retail Mini-series of The Beauty Business Podcast and today we will be talking about “The Client Journey.”

What has that got to do with stock and retail I hear you ask? The fact is that most therapists and aestheticians still fear the thought of “selling” their products to their clients. But this if a client comes to you with an issue they are suffering, then as a therapist you are doing them a disservice if you are not suggesting a home care solution for them.

In order to gain loyal clients, your service doesn’t start when a client lays down on the treatment table and it doesn’t end after the treatment, that’s why you should offer or “prescribe” the correct products that can enhance the effect of the treatment that you gave.

. . .and that’s why this week we have two amazing guests joining us from The International Institute for Anti-Ageing!

Meet the Founder of IIAA, Tracy Alpert and their Sales Director, Nicola Bell.

Get ready to take down notes because they will be sharing their approach to educating therapists and aestheticians on how to properly offer products to their clients. Even the language they use is inspirational. Learn how to effectively provide solutions to your clients using their 7 Touchpoint Client Journey Framework.

Now before you go ahead and listen, I would like to invite to my upcoming FREE live webinar next week on Monday and Tuesday.

The number one issue of any spa or salon owner is getting clients so I will be revealing The 4 Secrets To Getting All The Clients You’ll Ever Need.

If this is your main concern then don’t think twice and register now using the link below:

I’ll be seeing you there and don’t forget to leave a review after listening to this episode in order to get a chance to win $100 Amazon Gift Card.

A lot of therapists don’t understand this power that they actually do have and that they undermine themselves and so this will also help them to understand that what they’re doing is really special and that they are offering such an incredible service in changing people’s lives. – Tracy Alpert

This is a journey that an end user, a client that is visiting a location whether it be a retail or a salon really starts to strike up a relationship and the main aim of this is to generate loyalty. -Nicola Bell

Welcome to another episode of The Beauty Business Podcast and this one’s a little bit different. While I love giving out practical and actionable tips or advice to make your business better. . . let’s get into some #RealTalk for a moment here.

There are just a few weeks left of 2019 and there’s been something on my mind as I attended a conference a few days ago. . .  now I won’t spoil the story here as you need to listen to it to understand what I am talking about. . . but recently, I have started to wonder why we make our businesses more difficult or more complicated than we need to?

It’s like going for a drive where you could have reached your destination in 30 minutes if you just followed the correct route, but you ended up being distracted and tried the so-called “detour” then got yourself lost or it took you an hour or more to get there.

Same goes with reaching our goals in our business. . . are we going where we should be going? Are we following the correct path? Or are we still making it difficult by taking unnecessary detours and becoming distracted?

If you can relate to this then have a listen to today’s  episode now!

BBP 062 : How to Speak with Confidence about your Business with Pete Scott

Podcast cover
Read more

Confidence is important to every beauty business owner and this is something they often struggle with.

We are always dealing with our clients and our staff so this is sort of a skill that we need to improve on. If you are not confident or sure about your treatment or products then you won’t be able to convince the client. Same goes with handling your team that if you are not sure about your decisions then they will not be able to see you as a leader.

It’s a common misconception that confidence is being loud, being an extrovert or something more on the “outer” aspect.

Now the reason why our episode is centered around on this topic is that my awesome and avid listeners sent me messages about this so I felt it was my duty to find a guest expert who can teach us about confidence.

I know the perfect person to share his expertise because he exudes confidence whenever he is publicly speaking. . .

He is actually a returning guest speaker because he had already joined us way back in 2016 when I was just starting The Beauty Business Podcast.

Let’s all welcome again my good friend and mentor, Pete Scott.

No will not be talking about sales this time (directly that is) – but he will enlighten us what confidence really means and how to become confident.

He actually said this. . .

“Confidence is something that doesn’t exist.”

Which is a direct quote from Pete by the way. . .

I am sure you are confused or even shocked about the statement as I am at first so you have to listen to this episode.

Trust me. . .you’ll be amazed to know why.

P.S.

Reminding you again about the special offer I mentioned from the most recent episode. . .

No money involved, just your time and problems on your beauty business.

Episode Highlights and Takeaways:

“The first thing to know is that confidence is something that doesn’t exist and what I mean by that is that if we can remove this whole word that I am confident, I am not confident then we can be great in what we do.”

“If you practice confidence everyday, you would become more confident.”

“It’s being unafraid of being yourself – that’s real confidence. This is an internal quality and character. It’s not an outside charisma, that’s the difference.”
