Welcome to another episode of The Beauty Business Podcast and this one’s a little bit different. While I love giving out practical and actionable tips or advice to make your business better. . . let’s get into some #RealTalk for a moment here.

There are just a few weeks left of 2019 and there’s been something on my mind as I attended a conference a few days ago. . .  now I won’t spoil the story here as you need to listen to it to understand what I am talking about. . . but recently, I have started to wonder why we make our businesses more difficult or more complicated than we need to?

It’s like going for a drive where you could have reached your destination in 30 minutes if you just followed the correct route, but you ended up being distracted and tried the so-called “detour” then got yourself lost or it took you an hour or more to get there.

Same goes with reaching our goals in our business. . . are we going where we should be going? Are we following the correct path? Or are we still making it difficult by taking unnecessary detours and becoming distracted?

If you can relate to this then have a listen to today’s  episode now!

“Business doesn’t have to be complicated. Yes, it might be tough, you might need to change your habits, you might need to go out on a limb, or take a leap of faith. But what if just doing that, what if making that change gets you there much much sooner than you ever thought it can happen?” -Adam Chatterley-

If you have a business or you know someone who does, you probably know that small business owners wear a lot of hats. And some of those hats are totally great. But some — like filing taxes and running payroll, for example — not so great.

That’s where Gusto comes in.

Gusto makes payroll, taxes, and HR actually easy for small businesses. Fast, simple payroll processing, benefits, and simple management tools all in one place. Gusto automatically pays and files your federal, state, and local taxes so you don’t have to worry about it.

Plus they make it easy to add on health benefits and even 401(k)s for your team. Those old-school, clunky payroll providers just weren’t built for the way modern small businesses work.

We’ve partnered with Gusto here at The Beauty Business podcast because we think they are awesome . . . and here are the reasons why:

  • Gusto makes payroll and everything associated with it easy. Surprisingly easy. And fast too.

○ 90% of customers their say switching to Gusto was easy.

○ 85% of customers say running payroll is much easier now than with their previous provider.

○ 3 out of 4 customers take just ten minutes or less to run payroll with Gusto.

. . and Gusto integrates with your favorite tools to make your life easier — tools like QuickBooks, Xero, Google, and more.

Gusto was voted:

Best Online Payroll of 2018

■ Best HR Software of 2019

■ Best Benefits Administration Software of 2019

. . . and 77% of customers say that Gusto takes tedious tasks off their plates, saves them time and makes their business lives easier.

Welcome to February . . .

It’s going to be a very busy month full of surprises . . . you’ll have to listen to find out more – you are not going to want to miss this though!

But before all that . . .

Let’s revisit one of the most important aspects in every business that you should build amongst your clients – LOYALTY.

But what is loyalty?

Is it still relevant today with all the development of technology where people can simply find the nearest, best priced option available?

How does one build loyalty with their customers these days and how do you reward them for sticking by you?

I am sure you have the same questions above and so I will answer each one of them in this episode – plus I’ve got a free downloadable survey form you can use to get valuable feedback from your clients. I’ll tell you exactly HOW to use it in the episode.

How cool is that?

But that’s not all. . . (cue drum roll please)

I am excited to announce that I will be speaking at the upcoming conference, Professional Beauty London, this month to bring not one, not two but SIX business building workshops over two days!

Head on over to Professional Beauty Business Workshop to learn more and to book your tickets. I hope to see you there!

If you are not able to make it to London to join me for the workshops, I have some VERY exciting news. I will be hosting an event where everyone can attend wherever you are in the world. . .

I would like to introduce something that we, my team and I, have been working on for months.

The Beauty Business Boot Camp!

This is going to be a week long VIRTUAL event . . . meaning that it takes place online!

Every day . . . for a whole week . . . I am going to be holding FREE training sessions online covering the BIGGEST topics affecting independent businesses in our industry that will make a massive difference to your business in 2019.

Now before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s get back to our topic which is LOYALTY so hit play to listen now.

All About Loyalty (5:18)

Types of Loyalty:

  • Brand Loyalty or Business Loyalty (6:00)
  • Product Loyalty (6:21)

What are the Benefits of Loyalty? (10:37)

9 Ways To Help You Build Loyalty Among Your Clients (12:15)

1.Get Personal (12:21)

“Just recognising people, by letting them know you know who they are and that they are important to you is a big deal!”

2.A Thank You Goes a Long Way (16:12)

“This goes hand in hand with valuing your clients . . . so always say “thank you” at the end of every treatment or service.”

3.Genuine Customer Service (17:38)

“Genuine customer service is straight forward for me . . . what would YOU want, how would YOU want to be dealt with in a similar circumstance? ”

4.Stay Connected (19:11)

“Once again it shows you care about them and in turn they will reciprocate and extend you their loyalty . . . even if they haven’t visited recently. ”

5.Let Them Feel Heard (21:05)

“Offer your clients an easy way for them to give you feedback after every treatment AND encourage them to do so.”

6.Make It A Habit (22:27)

“Caring about your clients, genuine customer service and everything I have been talking about is an EVERYDAY thing. It’s not something you can focus on one day and forget about the next . . . that’s not really going to work.”

7.Exceed Expectations (23:21)

“An unexpected gesture or Random Act of Kindness such as this will leave a lasting impression that will keep them coming back and have them talking about you to their friends!”

8.Don’t Forget Your Employees (24:04)

“Loyalty among your staff is arguably MORE important than loyalty in your clients.”

9.Reward Their Loyalty 25:17

“This can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it . . . but in my experience, the more simple you can make it  . . . the more powerful it will be!”

Rank #7: BBP 037 : Focus Your Brand’s Personality To Secure Client Loyalty with Stephanie Mitchell

Podcast cover
Read more

Time flies by quickly when you are having fun and this season we’ve featured some amazing guests on the show from within and from outside the health and beauty industry to give us insights and inspire us to become more successful.

For our penultimate episode of Season 3, we are talking about something that most health and beauty business owners tend to neglect or give little thought to.

Honestly, I never thought it was quite so significant, but more than ever in today’s world it is really important to stand out, to be recognized if we want our clients to choose us over our competitions. There are likely hundreds of salons or spas in your area that offer similar treatments to you . . . but why would clients choose you?

The answer is simple and that it is because of your “Brand” and everything that encapsulates.

Now, I am excited to tackle this topic from a different perspective so I have with me today an amazing guest and the founder of Sunnystorm Marketing, Stephanie Mitchell.

She runs a well known marketing agency dedicated to helping beauty businesses improve their client base and brand. Stephanie’s extremely passionate about this thing called “Brand’ and is here to enlighten us as to what a brand is and to clarify why it’s more than just your catchy business name or fancy logo.

Are you ready to step up your brand? Then click play to listen now!

For all the links, visit the show notes page: Click here!

Episode Highlights and Takeaways:

Obsession about Branding (11:09)

“The reason that I’ve become so obsessed with it is first of all when I launched Sunnystorm Marketing a year and a half ago, I was nobody . . . like nobody knew anything about me. There’s so many marketing companies online like there’s millions and millions of them that do different sorts of online marketing, so I knew that I wanted to have a way to make myself stand out.”

What Is This Thing You Call ”Brand” (14:00)

“Your visual brand . .  it starts with your logo, it extends to your colour palette, your font palette and then kind of just visually how you represent yourself.”

“Having that way of visually representing yourself and making it consistent, representing that on social media, through your email marketing, on your website. It is so crucial differentiating yourself from other businesses online.”

Creating and Clarifying A Brand (17:17)

“If you feel like you either need to rebrand or you feel like you want to clarify your brand and really understand if what you are doing is right, one of the best things to do is to step back and look at your own personality and also your business personality.”

Steps in Creating Your Brand:

  1. Identifying What Your Personality Is (19:05)
  2. Think About Your Ideal Clientele (19:25)
  3. Create Brand Assets ( Logo, Color Palette, Font Palette) (20:20)

What Is A Personal Brand (24:11)

“Any type of business professional in the beauty industry should be considering their personal brand… the way I like to define your personal brand is:

What do your clients think of you when they’re not in your salon and they’re not paying you? “

How Much Do People Care About Personal Brand? (27:00)

“I think that when people do not care about you as a beauty professional… at that point you are simply a commodity and you really don’t have a differentiator between you and someone down the street that provides a similar service for the same price.”

Long Term Effects of Not Promoting Your Personal Brand (29:53)

“When it comes to all the work that you’re putting into promoting yourself online, if you’re not sharing your personal brand you’re gonna get less reward for your efforts.”

How To Develop And Expand Your Personal Brand Without Taking Too Much Time (34:18)

  1. Take baby steps to start sharing a bit more about yourself and your team in your marketing.
  1. The best thing you can do to make it not feel like work is to make it natural, authentic and comes from yourself – imagine you are talking to your favourite client only.
  1. Recognizing your fear and humanizing your brand.

But Gusto is. Better yet, now’s the best time to get set up for the new year.

Rank #11: BBP 048 : Top 10 Ways to Motivate Your Team

Podcast cover
Read more

Remember we were recently talking about goals on the podcast . . .  I hope you were able to plan what you’d like to achieve this year.

However, those are very much YOUR goals . . . but what about your team?

Do they share the same vision as you?

Are they motivated enough to help you reach those goals?

Motivation plays a major role when it comes to team performance. If your team members feel demotivated or lacking in support from YOU, they will likely deliver poor performance which can affect your business and your goals.

It’s a domino effect and you mustn’t take this lightly.

I understand that running a business can be tough but it certainly doesn’t mean you have to do it all on your own – in fact you shouldn’t. That’s why you have a team to support you, tho help you with your success . .  but you have to support them as well.

You need your team working WITH you to give you the best chance of achieving those goals.

So the very first step that you need to take is . . . TO MOTIVATE THEM.

But how do you do that on top of everything else and where do you start?

Well that is exactly what I have for you in today’s episode . . . 10 tried and tested, PROVEN ways to motivate your team.

Episode Highlights and Takeaways:
10 Tried and Tested, PROVEN Ways To Motivate Your Team (3:05)

  1. Create a Pleasant Working Environment (3:33)

“Provide a place for your team to de-stress or hangout whenever they feel the need to relax during their breaks – for that matter make sure your team are taking regular breaks so they don’t burn out.”

  1. Set Goals WITH your team! (4:38)

“Setting a target is one of the very best ways to help in motivating your team, it shows you care about them and about their personal development and that you want them to become successful too.”

  1. Know Their Worth (9:28)

“Treat each individual as part of a team or as a family member and not just some replaceable object. ”

  1. Educate Don’t Punish (10:31)

“Train people well enough so that they can leave, treat them well enough so they don’t want to.”

Not my quote unfortunately . . . Sir Richard Branson said it!

  1. Growth (12:21)

“It’s vital to know each team members desires and goals personally, you also want them to work well AS a team to help YOU achieve your goals.”

  1. Reward Hard Work (13:24)

“Just having the same targets and rewards in place all the time actually becomes less and less motivating OVER time.”

  1. Acknowledge Their Efforts (15:34)

“Even just a simple ‘Thank you” at the end of a long day can mean a huge amount to a member of your team.”

  1. Build and Bond (17:13)

“Build a healthy relationship with each member yourself and foster good relationships between your team too. ”

  1. Train and Develop (18:15)

“Training your team to really become experts will make clients feel at ease because they know they will be in good hands . . . thus creating an even more positive client experience.”

  1. Communicate and Collaborate (19:53)

“One of the most important things to have in a team is. . . communication.”

Plus, we will be tackling the current pressing issue of beauty business owners that’s been making the rounds on social media all about how to compete with previously salon only retail product being sold through department stores or online merchants . . . often at prices lower than you are encouraged to sell at.

If you follow me on social,  then you probably saw my video where I discuss Amazon getting in to the professional beauty market by selling salon products and we all know that Amazon is a big name when it comes to online shopping.

So just how do you compete if you are an individual spa or salon owner?

Find out how by listening now. . .

. . .and stay tuned at the end of the podcast as I tell you how you can get your hands on a $100 Amazon Gift Card!

P.S.

In case you have any concerns or burning questions about anything to to with products or retail then you can send me an email at  letstalk@salonbusinesssecrets.com or send me a message on any of my social media accounts.

P.S.S.

Stay tuned for another episode next week as I will be continuing the product mini series and bringing more beauty industry experts…

Rank #13: BBP 062 : How to Speak with Confidence about your Business with Pete Scott

Podcast cover
Read more

Confidence is important to every beauty business owner and this is something they often struggle with.

We are always dealing with our clients and our staff so this is sort of a skill that we need to improve on. If you are not confident or sure about your treatment or products then you won’t be able to convince the client. Same goes with handling your team that if you are not sure about your decisions then they will not be able to see you as a leader.

It’s a common misconception that confidence is being loud, being an extrovert or something more on the “outer” aspect.

Now the reason why our episode is centered around on this topic is that my awesome and avid listeners sent me messages about this so I felt it was my duty to find a guest expert who can teach us about confidence.

I know the perfect person to share his expertise because he exudes confidence whenever he is publicly speaking. . .

He is actually a returning guest speaker because he had already joined us way back in 2016 when I was just starting The Beauty Business Podcast.

Let’s all welcome again my good friend and mentor, Pete Scott.

No will not be talking about sales this time (directly that is) – but he will enlighten us what confidence really means and how to become confident.

He actually said this. . .

“Confidence is something that doesn’t exist.”

Which is a direct quote from Pete by the way. . .

I am sure you are confused or even shocked about the statement as I am at first so you have to listen to this episode.

Trust me. . .you’ll be amazed to know why.

P.S.

Reminding you again about the special offer I mentioned from the most recent episode. . .

No money involved, just your time and problems on your beauty business.

Episode Highlights and Takeaways:

“The first thing to know is that confidence is something that doesn’t exist and what I mean by that is that if we can remove this whole word that I am confident, I am not confident then we can be great in what we do.”

“If you practice confidence everyday, you would become more confident.”

“It’s being unafraid of being yourself – that’s real confidence. This is an internal quality and character. It’s not an outside charisma, that’s the difference.”

Rank #15: BBP 035 : How to Make Your Hard Work ‘Count’ with Chris Cheeney

Podcast cover
Read more

Most of us on the beauty business industry chose this path because it is our passion to create and help our clients look and feel amazing, however most of us have ‘dreams’ when it comes to what we want our business to give back to us, rather than goals in place to allow us to become successful and earn the money we want or even need!

We often neglect the most important aspects of the business which is planning, budgeting, goal-setting, team management and also KPI’s which help us make sure our business is not only running smoothly but is also doing well financially.

Imagine your business after a year or two… do you see it expanding or staying pretty much the same, struggling with costs, expenses, debts or taxes? It’s a scary vision to see your passion turn into nothing because you have avoided to work on the financial aspect of your business.

Never fear . . .

On this week’s episode, our guest is a secret weapon behind successful beauty business owners like Susan Routledge, Phil Jackson and Clare Cockell – all friends of the show! .

His name is Chris Cheeney and it was his wife’s passion that became the trigger for his calling to work with beauty business owners using his knowledge and experience as an accountant.

Now, we are not going to delve deep into the world of accountancy,  but we do share some tips and insights to help you and to make beauty business owners aware that you should not be just “surviving” or “existing” in your businesses,  but is doing well and even making a significant profit!

So if you’re ready to turn your DREAMS into reality for your beauty business then hit the play button to start listening!

For all the links, visit the show notes page: Click here!

Biggest Takeaways from Chris:

“The business was being ran based on passion and based on, you know this power of “I want to do this and I WILL achieve it”, but not on how you should run a business which is planning and budgeting and measuring your performance. So it took a long time for us to sort of understand that and understand what the KPI’s should be to have a successful business.”

“If we hit our targets and we spend how we say we’re gonna spend, then we can see our cash where it’s gonna be in 12 months time.”

“Don’t’ wait until you’ve hit the VAT Threshold to charge properly. Your prices have to be as if you are already VAT registered.”

“It’s not to think of your accountancy fee as a cost. You’ve got to think of it as an investment . .  because it is an investment in your business getting to where you want it to get to.”

“If you find the right accountant that understand you, your personal goals, your business goals , your desires then they’re the people that can really hold your hand, keep you accountable and make sure you get there.”

The answer is simply. . .NO!

WHY?!

I’ll tell you why, because . . .

In this episode, I will share with you ALL the reasons why you shouldn’t complicate your treatment menu, what you should focus on and how to know when you should or shouldn’t add more treatments.

It’s that easy as 1,2,3. . . no complications!

Rank #20: BBP 034 : How to Choose the Best Salon Software for Your Beauty Business

Podcast cover
Read more

We’re back with another much-talked about topic in the beauty industry whether in FB groups, forums, seminars or workshops, it’s as hot a topic today as it has ever been . . .

“What is THE BEST or THE RIGHT Salon Software?”

I have been working over 20 years in the beauty industry and I have helped hundreds of clients find the “best” or the “right” software for their salon, spa or clinic. I have placed the word best and right because there is actually no software that is best among the rest or even the right one for everyone! It actually depends on your unique requirements when it comes to  which salon software works best for you and your beauty business.

Just because it works for someone you know, it will not necessarily work for YOUR business as well. Also, don’t be tricked into buying just because of a fancy marketing ad as you might regret spending a lot of money on a salon software that doesn’t really help you at all.

The point of having a salon software system is to allow you to save time and money, but if it’s your first time purchasing software OR if you have made a mistake before and want to make sure you get it right this time… then you are in the right place!

I will be sharing my Definitive Guide to Choosing The Right Salon Software For You which I’ve developed over years of doing this and it’s the exact one I use for my clients when looking for the salon software that is best for them.

Plus, I have created a fantastic checklist to get you off to the right start including some standard requests and things to think about which you can DOWNLOAD HERE

The Definitive Guide to Choosing The Right Salon Software For You (05:13)

MUST HAVE’S & NICE TO HAVE’S (9:06)

“Prioritize all your requirements and once you have all your requirements listed and organized in to somewhat logical groupings, you now need to categorize them as “Must Have’s” and “Nice to Have’s”. This will further help you make a decision about which software to choose.”

CHECK YOUR INTERNET SPEEDS (9:51)

“We need to help you make a clear decision between Online (or Cloud based salon software) and Off Line (or Locally Installed salon software) options. A key deciding factor in whether you are free to choose between these options will be your internet connection.”

To know more about this topic, check out this episode: Episode 5 of The Beauty Business podcast – “Your Salon Software Questions Answered

BUDGET (12:38)

“Your decision about software shouldn’t solely come down to price, but price is always going to be a factor. Don’t just go for the cheapest option and don’t simply pluck a number out of the air . . . remember also that there is not just the initial outlay to consider. ”

RESEARCH (17:26)

“There are A LOT of spa, salon and clinic software systems out there and to save you EVEN more time I have put together another BONUS for you. Check out at least 7 systems and I want you to pick at least 5 of these companies to contact directly to get more information. Remember to base your choices on your list of requirements and not just which one has the fanciest feature list or promotional video.”

Click here for the list of Salon Software Companies!

SHORTLIST (18:50)

“Based on what you find out by email or during your phone conversation, I want you to come up with a shortlist of at least 3 software products.”

DEMO (19:52)

“Now you have your shortlist you need to contact each company either by email, phone or through a contact form on their website. What you are asking for is a one to one software demo. This can either be in person (the best option . . but increasingly uncommon these days) or over the internet (the more common and the most practical option).”

VERIFY (22:59)

“Make sure to fully Verify Any Questions You are not 100% Sure About while in the Demonstration.”

HELPDESK FUNCTIONS (24:38)

“We are going to test their helpdesk! I want you to make 3 phone calls . . . the first at 5 minutes after the Helpdesk stated opening hours, the second at a random time in the day (lunchtime is a good one to try) and then the third call 10 minutes before their helpdesk is due to close at night.

Obviously, you are checking out their opening hours and speed of answering . . . indeed whether anyone answers at all!”

If you have a business or you know someone who does, you probably know that small business owners wear a lot of hats. And some of those hats are totally great. But some — like filing taxes and running payroll, for example — not so great.

That’s where Gusto comes in.

Gusto makes payroll, taxes, and HR actually easy for small businesses. Fast, simple payroll processing, benefits, and simple management tools all in one place. Gusto automatically pays and files your federal, state, and local taxes so you don’t have to worry about it.
