Rank #1: 82: Growing a PPC Agency with Kirk Williams

Podcast cover
Read more

Today for our 82nd episode, we are going to talk with our second repeat guest. This time it is Kirk Williams, who you heard from on episode #26 in August of 2016.

At that time, Kirk was growing his freelancing business into an agency, and was just about to make his first hire. Since then, Kirk has grown his business and we decided to check in again and share all the progress he has made and some of the growing pains he’s experiencing as he takes ZATO to the next level.

So why are we doing a repeat guest interview here again? Because I think it’s fascinating to check in with Kirk at each stage of growth for his business. It’s not every day that you get to talk with someone who is in the middle of growing their company, and to grow up with the business.

I love the idea of checking in with Kirk every 12-18 months as he grows Zato, and I hope you will remain invested in his story as well.

Rank #2: 95: How We Target Our Interview Guests for Jumpstart Podcast

Podcast cover
Read more

Today for our 95th episode, I am going to share with you what I’ve learned about targeting and booking podcast guests here at the Jumpstart podcast.

The interview guest booking process has evolved somewhat in the past few years, and now that I have vowed that I won’t be doing any more interviews, I want to share with you the process. Yes, you heard that right. At the end of Episode #94, I dropped a bombshell: I am retiring from conducting interviews on the Jumpstart podcast. Geraldine DeRuiter was the last scheduled interview on the docket, and things would be changing moving forward.

Of course, I conducted that interview back in February, and batch recorded several episodes before heading to Slovenia, Germany and to visit family in the US. I figured that my schedule would hold true, and I penciled in a topic for today’s podcast episode.

The idea was that I would give away all my secrets about finding podcast guests, because I wouldn’t need them anymore.

Then something crazy happened. Well, not so much crazy as unexpected.

Rank #3: 81: Purge with Sujan Patel

Podcast cover
Read more

Today for our 81st episode we're going to try something new in a couple of ways:

1) We are welcoming back our 1st repeat guest Sujan Patel
2) We're not doing an actual interview, but more like a back and forth dialogue

Why are we repeating a guest? Because I though it would be a good idea for our 1st episode of 2018, Happy New Year!

Back in September of 2017 I met with Sujan in Austin at SumoCon conference, where Sujan talked about how he went through this process every 6 months to get rid of things that don't give him personal or professional growth & satisfaction. He puts it all down on a PURGE list and he takes the weight off of his shoulders by eliminating unfruitful items.

I thought this was a brilliant idea, and then I asked Sujan if he would be willing to share the purge concept on our podcast.

The rest is, erm, well obviously, not history, I'd rather say… future!

Quotable moments from our talk with Sujan Patel

On delegating duties:
[easy-tweet tweet=”If you suck at doing something – you should probably hire someone else to do it.” user=”sujanpatel”]

On hiring properly:

On branding:

Rank #4: 86: The art of niching down your business with Matt Inglot

Podcast cover
Read more

Matt Inglot is the Founder of Tilted Pixel, an agency specializing in membership sites, and the host of the Freelance Transformation Podcast.

Matt and I were connected by AJ Wilcox, a friend of the podcast and all around good guy.

Both Matt and I run podcasts, so AJ mentioned that we would be a good fit for each others show. I was a guest on Matt’s Freelance Transformation podcast back in January, and Matt is now a guest on Jumpstart.

This podcast was a lot of fun to record with Matt, because we got to see each others podcast process, the roles we play as hosts, and get both sides of a picture. When Matt was the interviewer, he let me do most of the talking and had the episode progress along. He was great in the role of host, but I wasn’t sure how he’d take to the role of guest.

And as you will see here, Matt is an awesome guest, willing to share stories, heartbreak and the victories that came in his business.

There is a lot to learn from Matt’s story during the early days. And even more to learn from how he turned things around in his business to the successful point he has reached today.

Rank #5: 94: Just Keep Writing with Geraldine DeRuiter

Podcast cover
Read more

Geraldine DeRuiter is the author of All Over the Place, and the voice behind the award-winning Everywhereist blog.

What to say about Geraldine DeRuiter? I’m a long-time fan of her blog, Everywhereist, and I’ve even appeared on a post about our exploits in Berchtesgaden.

I’m a big fan of her book, All over the place, which is a modern day love story with lots of bodily functions mixed in. It’s the one book my wife read in 2017. that had people on an airplane tapping her on the shoulder to say: “What are you reading and why is it making you laugh so hard?”

Her writing is like the infamous Meg Ryan diner scene in When Harry Met Sally – it’s impossible not to read her words and say “I’ll have what she’s having!”

And I got to interview this brilliant author and talk about writing, building an audience, cancer and serendipity.

We are all better off as a result. It’s one of my all time favorite conversations on the Jumpstart podcast, and an inspiration to everyone.

If you’ve ever wondered how the heck someone gets a book deal, how posts can go viral out of nowhere, and the most honest alternative to Web MD, then you have to listen to this interview.

Then read Everywhereist blog.

Then start your own blog using the tips we discuss.

Then after that start a good blog.

Man, I just loved the conversation so much that I am tempted to give away all the goods in this intro. But wouldn’t you rather have Geraldine tell it in her own words?

Rank #6: 93: What I’ve learned about interviewing from the Jumpstart Podcast

Podcast cover
Read more

I remember starting off with my first interview and having no idea what I was doing. It wasn’t episode #1, but rather a Skype call I recorded with Julien Coquet after hanging out in Superweek in February of 2015.

I had been thinking about doing a podcast for a while, so I bought a microphone and planned to bring it with me to Hungary. I emailed my industry friends who would be attending the conference, and asked if they would do an interview with me during the week on the mountain in Hungary.

A few said yes, but we never actually set a time to do the interviews. I left the conference with no interviews, but I did get a note from Julien asking if we could do things a few weeks later.

So I researched how to record Skype calls, and Julien became my first interview guinea pig. The interview was OK. What you’d expect from a first time recording.

A whole six months later I conducted my second interview, this time with Rand Fishkin while working out of an AirBNB in Hawaii. This time I put more thought into the questions and wanted to see how Rand would react. It was the most thought that I put into an interview.

And it was also OK.

Somewhere along the way, things went from just OK to not bad. I’m not sure I’ve ever gotten beyond that point, to be honest. And I notice that others do a better job than me.

I wanted the podcast to be a natural conversation, so I have avoided pre-forming questions or having a bias in the interview subject and direction. So it’s more of a conversation with an interview, if I’m being completely honest.

So what have I gathered from 64 conversations with marketers I admire?

Lots. Here are 10 things I’ve learned from conducting 64 interviews.

Rank #7: 87: 10 Things I No Longer Believe

Podcast cover
Read more

Today I am going to share 10 things I no longer believe as it pertains to business and career success. I will dissect the wisdom of myself in my 20’s and contrast them to how I feel about things in my mid 30’s.

It’s funny as I go through this list of items, I realize how much my mind has changed in just a decade of being a professional. How much conventional wisdom I think is complete bullshit. How much being in business and being around people during good times and bad have molded how I view the world today.

How I’ve been able to re-train my brain over the years and make adjustments based on real-life experience. My ability to process information and take action.

Do you know what the difference is between young and old? It’s not a certain age. To me, it’s your ability to re-train your brain, and adjust your thinking to accommodate new ideas. It’s one of our greatest capabilities as humans. Yet it’s so hard for many people to admit when beliefs are a sunk cost.

I think that’s a shame. That’s what old people do. That’s the old school of thinking.

And “Old school” shouldn’t be worn as a badge of honor. It’s not a compliment!

So on this rainy winter day in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, I am going to share 10 things I no longer believe. This episode was a rare one where I recorded and released the episode while staying in the same location.

Guess I’m slipping in my old age.

Rank #8: 88: We Are All Creators With Miles Beckler

Podcast cover
Read more

Today for our 88th episode, we will talk with Miles Beckler. Miles and his wife run a successful niche media company with authority sites in the spirituality and meditation space. Miles also teaches marketing for free on YouTube.

Miles and I met last year in Bali, and it started off innocently enough.

It actually started before he became aware of my presence. I remember sitting at breakfast at the hotel with my wife, and Miles walked by. I said to her “I think that’s Miles Beckler, he’s a guy I kinda know from the DC forums.”

He walked right past me. He must have been hungry.

Fast forward to the next day, and I am in an elevator with Miles and his wife Melanie. By this point, Miles must have been aware of my presence, because we strike up a conversation about the nomadic life. At the end, Miles says “You have a podcast, right? It would be cool to join you!”

And that, my friends, is when a star was born. Ok, not really. But we did agree tentatively to record a podcast together.

Of course, after that chance meeting I got to know Miles much better. I watched his talk on Facebook ads (it brought down the house), saw him give advice at a private mastermind group (it was incredible), and we even hung out at a pool party outside of Ubud and talked about life and business. Turns out we have taken completely different paths to arrive in a similar space. I was able to provide Miles with advice about speaking gigs and help plug him into the conference circuit. Plus a great travel hack with the Avianca Lifemiles program.

And Miles has encouraged me to build out several aspects of my launch funnel. His advice came at the perfect time, right before our big successful launch in November.

Since leaving Bali, I’ve become obsessed with Miles’ YouTube channel and all of the advice he gives out. I’m not sure there is a better resource to follow on the topic of building an online business.

Let's talk about the value of networking. Specifically, let's talk about how making connections and friends in your industry is like compounding interest. One meeting at a conference can lead to another conference to another opportunity and much more.

It’s a pretty wild ride, and I wanted to share how one single conference, my first big international conference, back in 2014, lead to many of the opportunities I’ve had to speak all over the world.

This is the story about how I ended up on a mountain top in Hungary, wet behind the ears, in January of 2014. Who I met, how it all worked, and what has happened since this event.

I’m releasing this episode today, because I am currently on that same mountain in Hungary! I’m networking, seeing old friends, and making new ones.

Developing hundreds relationships. Meeting new friends. All because I decided to go to a mountain in Hungary, 2 months after quitting my job at the end of 2013.

I would say that this is going to be “10 connections I made from the conference” but I think this will go longer than 10. Let’s see where it leads.

Dmitry Dragilev is the Founder of JustReachOut, which currently helps 4000+ entrepreneurs get featured in press on autopilot every single day.
I have to admit, I’m one of those people who is scared of public relations. Not because I don’t think it’s useful – it’s a fantastic way to grow an audience and a presence beyond channels like SEO or Facebook, but it just seems like such a precise set of skills that are needed to succeed with a PR strategy. And I don’t have those skills.

That is why I was excited when a listener and friend of the podcast Scott connected me with Dmitry for a a potential interview. While we have had PR pros on the podcast in the past, like Lisa Grimm from Whole Foods, I was interested in hearing specific strategies for getting press mentions, like what Dmitry has been able to do in his career.

You see, I’m a customer of Dmitry’s software called JustReachOut, and I have been following his story for a few years. It seemed like a great tale to share on the Jumpstart Podcast. But it wasn’t just Dmitry’s story I was interested in, I wanted to provide you with actionable tips for your own outreach.

And Dmitry delivered the goods! I really enjoyed hearing Dmitry’s back story, his source of inspiration, how he turned this into a two-headed business, and the actionable tips that we can all utilize right away after listening to this podcast.
