Kevin Lee Selzer

1. War on single-use plastics faces another setback as virus fears resurge

[1] Coronavirus cases have surged again in Korea, and so has the use of single-use plastics. As the country struggles to curb a second wave of COVID-19 infections, people are buying food and drinks via takeaways or deliveries that come in plastic packaging.

[2] Official data has yet to be compiled, but environmentalists say it is evident that the heightened Level 2 social distancing scheme, imposed nationwide in mid-August and to last until Sept. 20, is boosting waste from disposable packaging.

[3] The food delivery app companies do not have control over how their partner businesses package their food and beverages. Restaurants and cafes have increasingly chosen to pack items in disposable plastic boxes, as customers worry about catching the virus from dishes someone else has used.

*control over: - 에 대한 통제

[4] South Korea in February opened up regulatory legroom for restaurants and cafes to reintroduce plastic and paper cups for in-store customers until the virus outbreak is brought under control.

[5] Environment activists are asking the government to adopt a longer-term perspective and provide support for entities with sustainable ideas to contain the virus. If such leeway remains open, the country would never be close to the set of environmental goals it pronounced, they claim.

2. Bong Joon-ho joins team on ‘Sea Fog’ remake

[1] Oscar-winning auteur Bong Joon-ho is to join the production of the Hollywood remake of “Sea Fog,” a 2014 South Korean thriller. Bong was the producer of the original film.

[2] American film studio Participant -- which produced feature-length titles “Dark Waters,” “Green Book,” and “Contagion” -- is in charge of the project, according to US entertainment media outlet Deadline. Matt Palmer, who made his feature debut with Netflix thriller flick “Calibre” (2018), will direct the English-language film.

[3] Bong of “Parasite,” who served as the executive producer of the original “Sea Fog” -- known as “Haemoo” in Korean -- is teaming up with Participant and Palmer as the producer of the English adaptation. Kim Tae-wan, CEO of Lewis Pictures, which produced the Korean original, and producer Choi Doo-ho, who worked with Bong on “Snowpiercer (2014)” and “Okja (2017),” are also joining the team.

*team up (with somebody): (~와) 한 팀이 되다, 조를 짜 일하다, 협력하다

[4] The directorial debut by Shim Sung-bo centers around a little-known tragedy that occurred in 2001. The crew members of the Korean fishing ship Taechangho allegedly threw overboard the bodies of 25 Chinese stowaways after they died of suffocation while hiding inside the ship’s fish storage compartment, trying to enter Korea. The film received several local film awards and was selected as Korea’s entry to the foreign-language film category of the 87th Academy Awards.

[1] K-pop sensation BTS becoming the first Korean act to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart with its recently released single has reignited a debate over the seven members’ military service. The law allows master’s degree students to delay military service until they turn 29.

*eldest/oldest: 최고령의, 가장 나이가 많은

[3] Introduced in 1973, the military exemption law allows classical musicians and athletes who have won awards in state-recognized domestic and international competitions to serve in alternative service or be exempted from military service. The law does not apply to pop artists like BTS.

Jeon’s bill includes a proposal to allow a person to delay military service until he turns 30 upon recommendation by the Culture Minister and confirmation by the head of Military Manpower Administration.

1. [Weekender] Investing in stocks? Why not sneakers?

[1] Even non-sneakerheads are realizing the lucrative nature of sneaker resale these days.

O Jee-ye had never been much interested in expensive shoes. Shoes kissed ground-level microbes. They wore out much quicker than other items of clothing.

What shoes are for, O thought, was for protection. They were good if breathable, durable, didn’t give her blisters and matched the day’s outfit.

*sneakerhead: 운동화광

*lucrative: 수익성이 좋은

*nature: 성향

*microbes: 미생물

*wear out: 닳다, 헤지다

*durable: 내구성이 있는

[2] It was a shock for O when she learned through a close friend of hers that he easily makes 300,000 won ($250) a time by buying and reselling limited edition sneakers at a margin. That was nearly half her monthly rent in an average neighborhood in Seoul. What’s more, his profits were apparently nowhere near what the truly nimble resellers achieve.

[3] These transactions were not without risks. Beguiled sneaker enthusiasts were sometimes misled to pay unreasonable rates for a pair of counterfeit shoes.

[4] The culture of sneaker collecting is closely tied to the cultures of basketball and skateboarding. It dates back to the 1980s, when Michael Jordan emerged as an icon in the sports industry. His eponymous sneaker brand Air Jordan, launched 1984, became a status symbol for fans.

*be tied to 의지하다, 연결돼있다.

*date back to: ~까지 거슬러 올라가다

2. [From the scene] Korea’s quarantine hotel is ‘contagion-free’

[1] South Korea has required a 14-day quarantine for all arrivals from outside the country since April 1. Passengers with symptoms are tested at airport checkpoints and either sent to health institutions or other quarantine sites, depending on the results. The rest go to quarantine hotels -- such as this one in Incheon, situated less than 10 minutes’ driving distance from the airport.

[2] Since being made over as quarantine housing on May 22, the five-star hotel has hosted 2,323 passengers. At its peak, all 450 of its quarantine-ready rooms were filled.

[3] All passengers have their temperatures checked in the lobby and have nasal samples collected for testing. Then medical personnel examine them for symptoms and ask them to submit a questionnaire detailing their medical history. In addition, they are required to install a smartphone app that will guide them in checking symptoms for themselves.

[2] Winston Peters, New Zealand’s deputy prime minister and foreign affairs minister, urged the Korean government to cooperate by waiving the accused man’s diplomatic immunity and sending him to New Zealand to defend himself.

[3] Korea’s former deputy ambassador to New Zealand, surnamed Kim, is accused of groping a male staffer on three different occasions in late 2017 while he was stationed at the Korean Embassy in Wellington. The case reemerged after New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern raised the issue in a phone call with President Moon Jae-in last week. It is rare for such a topic to be discussed between two heads of state.

[4] During the phone call, Ardern expressed her disappointment that the Korean government was unable to waive diplomatic immunity and allow the police investigation to proceed, local daily the New Zealand Herald reported Sunday, quoting Ardern’s spokesman. “The matter now rests with the Korean Government to determine any next steps,” the spokesman was quoted as saying.

2. Korea has 2nd-highest income gap in OECD

[1] The gulf between the haves and have-nots is wider in South Korea than in almost any other member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, a recent analysis suggests, with only the US showing greater inequality.

[2] The poverty rate is the percentage of people whose income is less than half the median household income, according to the organization’s definition. If a country’s median household income were 40 million won ($33,500) per annum, the poverty line would be 20 million won.

[3] Korea posted a poverty rate of 17.4 percent -- the second-highest among the 35 economies analyzed. The US poverty rate stood at 17.8 percent.

[4] A research analyst said “the nation’s middle-income bracket has collapsed, and a large portion of middle-income households should be reclassified as part of the low-income bracket.”

*bracket: 괄호, 범위, 등급

*reclassify: 재분류하다
