It's time to tackle listener questions again on Options Playbook Radio. In this episode, Mark and Brian cover:

  • Question from Albert Deckel - First, I want to thank you for all the effort you place into the options playbook. I find your lessons absolutely clear, understandable and instructive....a rare combination!! I bought your book and find that, also, clear and concise and very informative. Two questions: While I understand how to convert a "Delta" into meaning, I really don't understand what consists of a "high" vs. "low" Gamma, Theta or Vega. For example, when is theta so high that it makes the purchase of an contract dubious, or Vega so high that it makes the purchase of an OTM contract desirable? Also, if I were to write an ITM put, what combination of Delta, Gamma, Theta or Vega am I looking for? Thanks so much!! Al
  • Question from Tim - Why isn't it standard or maybe required to let people close out shorts for free below $.10?

Options Playbook Radio 42: Listener Questions Edition

The Huddle: Listener questions and comments

  • Question from Brian Collamer - Hi Brian! In this show you were describing selling OTM options. You mentioned that when selling options the fastest theta decay occurs in the 45-30 day range. I thought that was only true for ATM options? Do OTM options not decay the fastest at 60-70 days and then kind of flatten out?? Great show, wish it was longer! Thanks, Brian
  • Question Mukund Ambarge: Hi! I had question on theta decay. I understand that delta is in constant flux with every tick move in stock, the delta/gamma changes. IV is in constant flux with buying and selling of options and volume etc. So vega changes with option transactions. But theta decay is the only one which is always in a steady pace i.e. it’s not like it will decay quickly today and slowly tomorrow. The question is when is the theta decay really adjusted in the prices of options. Do the theta decay get adjusted at every tick move? Or every hour? If it is adjusted daily. Then when is the theta decay taken out of options. Early morning before start of trading? Or late in the day like last few minutes that whole days theta is taken out? Also I do not know when is weekend theta taken out of prices? Friday early morning or Friday ending or middle of the day? Basically when does market maker run the prices with the model and set the prices? Only once before trading starts or does he keep adjusting every minute/hour/tick based on demand/supply? Thanks, Mukund

  • QUESTION Erik Norstedt: Just listened to the OPR 272 episode and had a question. When you say you want to "Do the entire trade at the midpoint for even" - what exactly do you mean? Thanks.

  • QUESTION FROM Welch Kwong: Huge fan of your weekly podcast. I've asked a question before and you guys were extremely helpful with your response and expertise. I have another question wondering if you can help. Let's say the infamous underlying XYZ is at $50 on a Monday, and I sell a 60/65 Call Spread @ 1.00 exp Friday (5 days). I get 1.00 credit and my risk is 4.00 potential max loss per spread. If I continue to roll position out for a credit, rolling up I dont think really matters for this question, but with enough rolling and credits to add up to 5.00, would that mean that the trade overall was at zero risk (not taking into account commissions)??

  • QUESTION FROM Bob Randall: Brian, I have a 12 year old niece with a very bright mathematical mind that I am trying to get into options. I'm looking for either beginning games or age appropriate books or videos to teach her about options. I also have two editions of the Playbook and thought I might reach out to you for any suggestions.

  • RELATED QUESTION FROM STEVEN PATEL: Do I need to be a math whiz to understand this options stuff?

  • QUESTION FROM CHARLIEC: Quick Q for the show - What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen in the options market?
