I’ve tried to pick up some tips from this show but have found it frustrating. There is a lot of unnecessary chatter. I listened to a 38 minute episode about the corona virus and 22 minutes in, only one real tip. Otherwise it was just the two hosts having the same conversation I’ve been having with my team. This has been my experience with the podcast overall. I tune in and wait and wait and wait, but don’t get much for the time I’ve invested.

Great Show!

HR Happy Hour 309 - The Importance of the Manager - Employee Relationship

Host: Steve Boese

Guest: Adam Rogers, CTO, Ultimate Software

This week on the HR Happy Hour Show, Steve is joined by Adam Rogers, CTO of HR Technology solution provider Ultimate Software to talk about some recent research Ultimate published on the manager - employee relationship, why it matters, and how managers can make this relationship better.

In late 2017, Ultimate partnered with the Center for Generational Kinetics to publish new research on the manager - employee relationship, to better understand how managers and employees perceive things differently at work, and then to help create solutions, both managerial and technical, than can improve and strengthen this critical relationship. It has been said often that 'people don't leave companies, they leave managers', and on the show Adam shared both what the research found about this idea with respect to how employee retention and engagement is shaped by these relationships, as well as his personal observations as a manager and leader of an organization.

Additionally, we talked about the importance of openness, transparency, and trust, the need to provide training and resources to managers - especially new managers, and the need to focus on how the manager - employee relationship drives employee satisfaction and engagement.

And we also managed to fit in some winter weather updates, college football, and NBA talk as well!

This was a fun show, many thanks to Adam to joining us.

The Value of HR Certification: Q&A with Kristina Minyard

Should I get certified or not? What is better, the SHRM or the HRCI certification? How about studying--what's the best option? HR certification is a big mystery for many HR professionals, whether they've been in business for a year or twenty. And it's no surprise that it brings some angst--with pass rates between 50 and 70%, depending on the exam, there is a lot of uncertainty.

In this interactive Q&A session with Kristina Minyard, Ben explores some of these questions and others that HR professionals want to know. They talk about study groups vs going solo, study resources, how the SPHR, PHR, SHRM-CP, and SHRM-SCP exams differ, why it's important to think about certification as an HR leader, and more.

HR Happy Hour 247 - Greenhouse and the Future of Recruiting Technology

Hosts: Steve Boese, Trish McFarlane

Guest: Daniel Chait, Co-founder and CEO, Greenhouse

This week on the show, recorded live in San Francisco on site at Greenhouse Open, the customer event for recruiting technology provider Greenhouse, Steve sat down with Greenhouse Co-founder and CEO Daniel Chait to talk about how companies can become great at recruiting and how modern recruiting technology can help them achieve this goal.

Turns out, at least some of the process changes that companies can implement, like going into candidate interviews with a structured plan, or making sure you understand which are the key elements or attributes that are likely to make a candidate successful can elevate an organization's recruiting function into the top 10%.

Additionally, Dan and Steve talked about the market for recruitment technology, why it might be so crowded with solution providers, and why most recruitment technology providers have made a mistake by trying to make recruiting simple and somehow 'not core' to the business. Dan and Greenhouse feel that recruiting is hard, important, and are creating tools to make organizations successful at these tough challenges.

This was a fun and interesting show - many thanks to Dan and the entire team at Greenhouse for having the HR Happy Hour out at the event. And also, many thanks to our HR Happy Hour Show sponsor Virgin Pulse, www.virginpulse.com.

We're Only Human 9 - Sourcing, Recruiting, and Organizational Priorities

Host: Ben Eubanks

Guest: Madeline Laurano, Co-Founder, Aptitude Research Partners

Sourcing isn't a new activity in the talent acquisition world. There have always been hard to fill jobs, but we're seeing more of this kind of issue than ever before. In fact, a recent CareerBuilder study puts the cost of open positions at nearly $800,000 annually, tallying up costs that include lost productivity, low employee morale, and higher turnover due to burnout. In addition, one Lighthouse Research study of talent acquisition priorities pegs sourcing as the number one area that business leaders plan to focus on in the coming year.

In this episode of We're Only Human, host Ben Eubanks is joined by Madeline Laurano, co-founder of Aptitude Research and co-host of Research on the Rocks, another HR Happy Hour network show. She and Ben discuss some of the key aspects of sourcing, such as employment branding, recruitment marketing, and technology's role in the process.

In addition, they examine the impact of AI, machines, and algorithms on the sourcing world, breaking down some of the hype and illuminating an amazing competition that exemplifies that to get the best results, we need humans and machines working together. We're Only Human 24 - The Best Team Wins with Engagement and Performance

Host: Ben Eubanks

Guests: Chester Elton, Adrian Gostick

What does it take to win as a team? How do we encourage each of our people to deliver the best performance without taking a bland "peanut butter spread" approach to management? Is there a secret to what high-performing teams do differently from the rest?

In this episode of We're Only Human, Ben speaks with authors Adrian Gostick and Chester Elton about their new book The Best Team Wins. Gostick and Elton have authored numerous books on team performance, motivation, and culture, and they are globally recognized experts in the field.

The discussion focuses on everything from collaboration technologies, to how to manage individuals in a way that drives engagement. In fact, the discussion even delves into micromanagement and the times that employees actually crave the attention of a micromanaging leader in their careers even if not in their daily work tasks.

Finally, the conversation wraps up by exploring concepts such as rapid onboarding of new hires to get them to full productivity, how one company pays new employees to NOT work in their jobs for the first 90 days, and the secret to how a NASA mission commander was able to lead a highly motivated and engaged team for months in close quarters without suffering a single dispute or issue among the team. You can learn more about Adrian and Chester here.

Host: Steve Boese

Guest: Joshua Gans, University of Toronto

This week on the HR Happy Hour Show, Steve is joined by Joshua Gans, Professor of Strategic Management at the University of Toronto, and co-author of the new book, Prediction Machines: The Simple Economics of Artificial Intelligence.

On the show, Joshua gives his easy to grasp definition of Artificial Intelligence, how AI is really about lowering the costs of and increasing the availability and ability to create more predictions about outcomes. These outcomes could be about predicting tomorrow's weather, teaching a self-driving car how to react to changing conditions, or even helping HR and Talent leaders predict who might be the best candidate for a job, or who might be a better fit on the team.

Joshua breaks down how HR and business leaders should think about AI, how and where to see and understand its impact on business, the need for human judgment, and how to assess and be aware of the hidden dangers and potential biases in AI technology. This was the most lively and engaging (and accessible) conversation about AI I have ever had, and I think any HR or business leader will appreciate the easy, casual way Joshua explains complex topics.

We also talked 'War Games', (the movie), Moneyball, the pain of teaching a teenager how to drive.

This week on the HR Happy Hour Show, it’s the return of “Workplace Movie Hall of Fame” with a deep dive into the 2019 Academy Award winning documentary “American Factory”, the workplace story set in post-financial crisis Ohio, and what happens when a Chinese billionaire opens a new factory in the shell of an abandoned General Motors automotive plant.

Steve and Trish talked about some of they interesting and challenging workplace themes and ideas raised in the movie - how American and Chinese workplace attitudes toward commitment and responsibility to the organization can be very different, how the simple concept of leadership probably does not translate as clearly as we think it might, and how we would all be better off in this global economy to spend more time getting to know and better understand each other’s culture and point of view.

We also discussed some of our own thoughts and observations based on our trips to China over the last five years and our experiences working in the Chinese culture. We love doing the Workplace shows, we hope you enjoy.

Great Show!
