Episode 113 - Eliisa Tennant: Nutrition Tracking Made Easier

Podcast cover
Read more
In Episode 113, we meet with Eliisa Tennant, the Community Marketing Manager at Cronometer. We discuss the use of the Cronometer app to help monitor and manage diet and nutrition for individuals and organizations. While tracking nutritional information can often seem tedious and time consuming, we learn more from Eliisa about how Cronometer makes nutritional tracking much more convenient and accurate. Whether you are optimizing human performance, losing weight, improving body composition or managing a medical condition, Cronometer takes all of the guess work out of diet management and nutritional choices.

Cronometer is considered one of the most accurate, comprehensive nutrition tracking apps available. Unlike other apps on the market, the nutritional data is curated from verified, accurate sources, providing a complete solution – no matter what diet you choose to be on. CEO, Aaron Davidson, built the Cronometer app as a side project in 2005. He was following the CRON diet (Calorie Restriction with Optimal Nutrition) and being the nutrition nerd/software developer that he is, decided to build an app to track his diet. Thus, Cronometer was born. It was several years later before he came to the conclusion that maybe he was onto something and quit his six-figure corporate job to focus on improving Cronometer. There are now over 5 million users.

Episode 112 - Don & Derek: Managing Training Over Your Lifespan

Podcast cover
Read more
In Episode 112, Don and Derek discuss finding the ‘sweet spot’ in their training as they age. In the case of running, one of the biggest challenges is to find an intensity and volume of running that creates significant health and fitness benefits without placing an individual at risk for overtraining or injury. While the younger versions of yourself may have been able to withstand any type of workout that you would undertake, the ageing adult must exercise a little more control and discretion over their workouts to maximize their health and ensure longevity. Don and Derek share their strategies for incorporating workouts that give them the best bang for their buck, without setting them up for exhaustion, injury or a poor metabolic response. In many cases, the addition of appropriate recovery measures may be required for older adults to make sure you are fully rested before heading into the next workout. Making good decisions on training is absolutely necessary for everyone, but plays a bigger role for ageing adults.

Podcast cover
Read more
In Episode 111, we talk about the amazing feats of endurance and mental strength of David Kilgore. As an ultra runner, David is no stranger to putting in hundreds of miles per week under his belt. He tells us about his training for some of the most gruelling races in the world, dealing with everything from heat exhaustion, altitude changes and creatively fueling himself. We discuss David’s training and his use of different footwear for different training and competition scenarios. Thankfully, David has managed to stay relatively injury free. As such, we talk about his approach to training intelligently for maintaining a long running career and lifestyle, while at the same time, not taking life or running too seriously.

David Kilgore, born in UK, raised in Florida and currently residing in NYC, is a runner of all trades from shorter distance races on the road/track to long ultra-distance on the trails. David placed third at the 2018 USATF 50K Trail Championships, won the 2018 Breakneck Point 42K and has a 50K PB of a mind-boggling 3:01. In 2019 he came in 4th at the USATF Trail Championships at Fourmidable 50k in California, made the 2019 USA Trail world team and ran a double marathon in Rio De Janeiro in 5:40:02 in ON Running CloudStratus shoes. He has accomplished all of this with a go-with-the-flow approach — running mostly by feel and finding inspiration simply by exploring new areas by foot.

We discuss the impact of today’s cultural and technological norms and how they can negatively impact our brain and our habits. While people often refer to detoxifying their bodies through nutritional interventions, what Dr. Perlmutter is proposing is detoxifying our brains by making better choices around technology, social interaction, physical fitness, sleep and nutrition. By essentially undertaking a ‘Brain Wash’, we can address multiple issues around both physical and mental health. The book outlines a 10-day plan that includes meal plans and recipes to assist in the cultivation of a healthy, vibrant and meaningful life.

Dr. Perlmutter is a Board-Certified Neurologist and five-time New York Times bestselling author. He serves on the Board of Directors and is a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition. Dr. Perlmutter received his M.D. degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine where he was awarded the Leonard G. Rowntree Research Award. He serves as a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease and has published extensively in peer-reviewed scientific journals including Archives of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and The Journal of Applied Nutrition. In addition, he is a frequent lecturer at symposia sponsored by institutions such as the World Bank and IMF, Columbia University, Scripps Institute, New York University, and Harvard University, and serves as an Associate Professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

His books have been published in 32 languages and include the #1 New York Times bestseller Grain Brain, The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs and Sugar, with over 1 million copies in print. Other New York Times bestsellers include Brain Maker, The Grain Brain Cookbook, The Grain Brain Whole Life Plan, and Brain Wash, co-written with Austin Perlmutter, M.D. He is the editor of The Microbiome and the Brain authored by top experts in the field and published in December 2019 by CRC Press. Dr. Perlmutter has been interviewed on many nationally syndicated television programs including 20/20, Larry King Live, CNN, Fox News, Fox and Friends, The Today Show, Oprah, The Dr. Oz Show, The CBS Early Show, and CBS This Morning.

Podcast cover
Read more
In Episode 097, we are rejoined by one of our earlier podcast guests, Mr. John Callery, to get an update on the state of the opioid crisis in America and the steps that have been taken to keep citizens safe, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. John updates us on the status of fentanyl in 2021 and the reasons behind its proliferation, as well as the challenges faced by the DEA in protecting the public from its sinister effects. We discuss the impact of COVID-19 and how it has changed the way drugs are used, trafficked and enforced. He explains how sophisticated the methods of the drug cartels can be with drug distribution and how they have adapted rapidly during this time. John also updates us on the role the DEA has played in monitoring the conduct of domestic pharmaceutical companies and their production and distribution of opiate-based medications. And, with almost 30 years of experience in the drug enforcement business, John tells us about his role as a technical advisor for major movies over the years that involve plots around law enforcement and illicit drug trafficking.

Mr. John W. Callery has a total of 35 years of law enforcement experience and began his law enforcement career in 1984 as a Police Officer in the United States Air Force (USAF) for six years. For four of those years, he was detailed to the prestigious USAF Presidential Honor Guard at Bolling AFB, Washington, D.C., serving then President Ronald Reagan. Mr. Callery continued his law enforcement career as a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent in 1992, initially assigned to the DEA Los Angeles Field Division (LAFD). Mr. Callery received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Administration from the University of Maryland and a Master’s of Science in Counterterrorism-WMD from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in 2007. He also holds a Master Certificate in Conflict Management from the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza School of Business.

As the Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the San Diego Field Division (SDFD) he is currently leading the men and woman of the SDFD in concentrating on the opioid overdose death investigations, fentanyl laced drugs, Mexican Cartel operations and the enduring scourge of methamphetamine trafficking in the region. Mr. Callery is also a professional public speaker and has conducted hundreds of lectures around the globe on a myriad law enforcement and counter terrorism topics.

I cannot praise this podcast enough for sharing the RIGHT message when it comes to overall health and wellness! I love how they are consistent with their message that you have your own unique needs when it comes to a workout program, a nutrition program, and practices that you should add into your daily life. What works for others won’t necessarily work for you. They are committed to providing the information you need to step back and evaluate your own life. They also provide the tools to help you adjust your approach and continue to progress on your wellness journey.
