Leadership Decisions - Podcast #263

Podcast cover

There are invisible factors at work in your organization. 50% of why a team can be successful. Unless you have been living under a rock for the past few years, you know that the recession has aggravated what already was a deteriorating relationship between employers and their employees. While things weren’t rosy before, now everyone knows someone (or has experienced it themselves!) who has been caught in layoffs, buyouts, downsizing, capsizing, and reductions in benefits, not to mention freezes on new hires, pay raises, and promotions. And you also know the result: People are willing to abandon companies like the proverbial rats on a sinking ship because no one feels safe! The reason isn’t rocket science. If you even suspect that the ship you are on could go down and something else comes along, there’s a good chance you’d jump ship too. Think about it. The fear doesn’t have to be based on facts; a nasty corrosive rumour can have people racing toward the exits just as easily. A Wharton School of Business article says that most companies can expect to lose anywhere between 20 and 50 percent of their employees in any given year. Few things are more disruptive and costly to your business than an unexpected exodus from your talent pool. http://fullmontyleadership.com/

Curiosity and Leadership #298

Podcast cover
Read more
Why curiosity may be your most important leadership quality. What does it mean to be curious. Are you interesting or interested? Are there any REAL Leaders left? Before I answer, I have to ask another question: Do you want to hear the absolute truth? I’m talking about the raw truth and definitely Not some buttered up, make it sound better than it is bunch of B.S. What I’m talking about is just you and me, sitting across the table from each other speaking our truth. (A word of caution…. What you are about to read will likely piss some people off. Maybe even you!) If you are ready to hear the absolute truth then I’m here to tell you that… There are no REAL Leaders anymore. Don’t believe me? Take a look around. You and I both know that leadership in its present form is a about as effective as a Jell-O© bullet. The problem is, we’ve been trained to believe someone is a leader because of position, title or accumulation of goodies, and it’s about time we realized; that’s not “real” leadership. So let’s boil leadership down to its core…  You are a leader if you have people who have consciously decided to follow you. Note that I said consciously. That means they aren’t following you because they have to, they’re supposed to, or for any other reason than you, their leader, are the example of the way they want to be! So let’s take a look at some so-called leaders we have today. Read more: http://fullmontyleadership.com/authentic-leadership/no-real-leaders-left/

Are you sick, tiered and angry about the quality leadership we are dealing with today...particularly at a political level? Do you wish someone would step up and call the craziness out? Our guest today is someone who decided to do something about it. Yes, I know it’s shocking but he got angry about the way things were going and decided to do something about it. My guess today is a highly in demand leadership expert, speaker and author who I am honoured to call my friend (not in the Hollywood sense) but a real friend. He is someone I highly respect as a leader of leaders. He’s also an outspoken individual who is committed to making a difference. And as a result has decided to jump into the crazy game of politics. He has chosen to run for the US House of Representatives as a Libertarian His slogan is "Not One. Penny. More." My mate Mr Jim Bouchard. Jim is always an outstanding guest and this time was no exception. I was just thinking how our discussion was in many ways an example of what healthy politics would look like. Passionate, heated (not always in agreement) and fighting for a common good! This is what the fools don't understand...We don't have to agree to like and respect each other to get along and make a difference. Check out Jim's Libertarian stance and get his free book here...I promise you'll find it highly stimulating! http://bit.ly/CrazyAngryLibertarian More on the host: Dov Baron http://FullMontyLeadership.com

Podcast cover

What are the rules of leadership?

When is it okay to break those rules? Are there different rules for those who are not satisfied with simply being a leader, but instead are driven to be great leaders?

On this episode, my guest Kevin Kruse and I break all the rules (including our own podcasting rules). You see, on this episode we simply hit record and had one of our great conversations. You quite literally get to eavesdrop in on two blokes chatting about all things leadership, a conversation that goes way beyond the boardroom.

This episode's guest is a returning champion; Kevin Kruse is the Founder and CEO of LEADx, offering the world’s first leadership trainer and coach, all powered by IBM Watson (AI). Kevin is also a New York Times bestselling author of nine (9) books including his latest: Great Leaders Have No Rules: Contrarian Leadership Principles to Transform Your Team and Business.

On this episode we go FullMonty on so much, including:

  • Our gratitude practices
  • What to say if someone asks you a question you don't understand... (while still looking smart)
  • The danger of devaluing your knowledge
  • Horrible bosses
  • "Assumptive Knowledge"
  • Why you should throw out your "Open Door Policy"
  • Megastars we've both interviewed
  • The pain of writing books (and those who make it harder)
  • How to cope with the "joy stealers" of life
  • Why giving your kids a curfew doesn't work

Jon Hansen: Ghost Writer for Leaders

Why famous and none famous people hire a ghost writer.

Why don't have to be a writer to share your message!

As leaders we all need to consider:

How are you going to share your message? What is your life’s message? What is the philosophy? What is the guidance you want to leave to the world as a legacy? None of us like to confront our mortality but we do need to confront our legacy and whether we are leaving the kind we want.

Along your journey, there’s no doubt been times where you have amazed yourself in the way you did something, took command or directed something. It was likely one of those moments where you or someone who was there said something like: There’s a message inside of you! But how do you get it out?

Well, what if you had someone who had the ability to go in and pull out that message and all the supporting stories and anecdotes from you? Someone who could give your message and stories the form and cohesion that would allow you to kick it through to become your super bowl goal?

That's exactly what our guest does!

He's the most famous guy you've never heard of. Jon Hansen is a two-time Ottawa finalist for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

Jon is one of the top ghostwriters in Canada writing for top executives, politicians, athletes, and celebrities globally.

He’s penned countless, books, articles, blog posts, papers and speeches on a diverse range of topics. As a writer under his own name, Jon is a regular contributor to magazines around the world and is known as a contributing author to the Go Daddy blog.

On this episode we go FullMonty on: Why many famous and none famous people hire a ghost writer? I ask if "ghost writing" is cheating? We look at the most common misunderstanding about what ghost writers do. If everyone is looking for their 15 minutes of fame, why would a ghost writer give theirs away? I'll ask him how he feels about the ghost writer for Donald Trump revealing that Donald never wrote a word. We'll talk about writing as a job, what it means, and what it takes? How to know if you should hire a ghost writer? I'll even get him to tell us what it costs to hire one.

Jamie Mustard: The Iconist

Podcast cover
Read more

How can you and I make something iconic? How can we find a way to stand out?

Whether we're looking at ourselves, our brand, our creativity or our purpose – we are all trying to find ways to distinctively project ourselves in a world full of mass similarity.

As a leader in your industry do you sometimes find yourself struggling to stand out? What about as an organization or even as a product or service in the market place? Do you sometimes feel like you might not be one of the special or "anointed" ones?

What if you knew how to anoint yourself?

Business is not just about being able to stand out, but rather to stand out in a way that has massive impact and longevity.

But how can we stand out in a world of ever increasing visual noise? When you look back on the history of music, art, politics and literature, there are certain "Iconic" individuals that are indelibly tattooed on our minds to such a degree that even if we have no real interest in what they are or do, they are unshakable. Think of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5...Now tell me you didn't hear: "Bha-Bha-Pah-Ba, Bha-Bha-Pah-Ba!" The question is, was it Beethoven's genius that created music that hundreds of years later everyone knows? (of course it is) However, what if there's a formula that Beethoven consciously or unconsciously understood? Furthermore, what if it's a formula that translates over to Art, Design, Architecture, Movie Making, and even road signs?

If it is a formula, you might be wondering how you can tap into it so that you or your brand becomes the very thing imprinted in the minds of those you wish to influence and impact?

Well, you can because our guest on this episode is Jamie Mustard.

Jamie Mustard is an expert on perception in the physical world, a strategic multi-media consultant, art, design and product futurist, translator of technologies, creative artist and Iconist.

A graduate of the London School of Economics, Jamie’s work is an explanation of the ‘economics of attention’ based on the primal laws of human perception called Blocks™.

He has spoken, educated and inspired others with his work ubiquitously including, Cisco, Intel, Symantec, Adidas, Pacific Northwest College of Art and his TEDx at creative giant, Wieden + Kennedy.

His purpose is to give the power of getting attention and all that it does for us internally, back to those who are feeling stifled by an over-messaged to culture. He is the author of the new and highly influential, ICONIST: The Art and Science of Standing Out.

On this episode we go FullMonty on:

  • The Red Rubber Ball Philosophy that changed his mentality
  • The Science and Art of Obviousness
  • The primal laws of human perception
  • Messaging Dilution...how to overcome it
  • The paradox of choice
  • Economics of attention
  • Why Symmetry Matters
  • Tapping into "Blocks" and "Icons" to truly stand out
  • Why songs and nursery rhymes get stuck in our head
  • The power of Transparency
  • How feeling Invisible made him a master of helping others stand out
  • Why every mental Arrow Head needs a Shaft and why every Shaft needs an Arrow Head
  • Repetition: Stay it often enough and it becomes a (small t) truth
  • Tapping into the powerful force of emotion
  • Icons and Courage
