Rank #1: Pocketnow Weekly 088: Moto 360, Android Wear, and hacking a path to Inbox Zero

Podcast cover

Inbox Zero. It's become something of a myth in the Pocketnow Weekly recording studio ever since we started actively courting listener feedback all those months ago. Skip a listener-mail section here, another one there, and before you know it you've got a mountain of mail it'd take a whole episode to get through. So, just like we did back on episode 076, we're devoting an entire podcast to your missives. We'll hear from people concerned about dual-SIM stigma, people worried about the future of Apple, and people writing to remind us that the automated home isn't as new a concept as we might think. And that's just scratching the surface. Before that, we delve into the meat of the week's news: the new Android Wear platform – and in particular the Moto 360 watch that we're all dying to strap on. All that and more awaits on episode 088 of the Pocketnow Weekly ... so mash those cans on, turn the volume up and rip the knob off: we're here to talk mobile tech, and it's gonna get awesome.Send feedback, questions, and requests to podcast [AT] pocketnow [DOT] com. Follow us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google Plus to stay apprised of the latest episodes. Tell your friends about the show so we don't have to do a telethon to stay on the air. Rank #3: Pocketnow Weekly 318: iPhone X + Huawei P20 = Motorola P30

Podcast cover
Read more

The Motorola P30 is pretty much the iPhone X. Design-wise, it just is. Okay, perhaps we should really talk more about this because it's more than just a look-alike.

But before that, a stringy thought thread about the Galaxy Note 9 and some Crazy Rich Asians make our day. We also notch another bit of chat on the Pixel 3 XL's devastating notch (get in line) and Alexa's creeping motions to everyone's dorms.

Jules is out this week, but the rest of the gang work to make up for it on this episode of the Pocketnow Weekly!

Rundown

  • Motorola P30: You've seen the pictures, so shall we have a fight about the iPhone X?
  • Pixel 3 XL: Again, you've seen the pictures...
  • T-Mobile: Will a Team of (human) Experts get you to switch networks?
  • iOS 12: Who needs Group Facetime anyways?
  • Touch ID: Does Apple even have the will to bring it back?
  • Pocophone F1: Is $300 and a Snapdragon 845 automatically a winning combo?

5G all the things

This week, we've seen a lot of gun-jumping/shark-jumping/poop-jumping about which smartphone maker will take the cake with the first 5G connection. Will Samsung or LG go first? How about that Moto Z3 and its "upgradeable" position? What's up?

And finally...

"Alexa, can you get out of my dorm?"

Rank #4: Rubin woes, Xiaomi grows, MAKERphone glows | #PNWeekly 329

Podcast cover
Read more

Xiaomi puts two phones to the fore: one with magnets and without bezels to speak of, another with two copper tubes and all the gaming might one could ask for. Where does that leave the Chinese manufacturer as we head out of 2018?

A make-your-own-phone kit has received multiples of its minimum crowdfunding goal on Kickstarter. And while it isn't an Android phone, there are valuable lessons to be had from the MAKERphone.

But first, the specter of improper handling of sexual misconduct at Google has reared its ugly head. At the the tip-top end of it is none other than who many consider to be the father of Android: Andy Rubin.

We'll process all of these stories together this week on the Pocketnow Weekly.

If you're a smartphone maker whose brand starts with the letter 'H,' you've only known pain and suffering this week. You were treated as an outpost of the Chinese cybersecurity threat and have committed an unforced error in the US market you're trying to reach. Or, you're losing another executive after trading away 2,000 of your finest employees and you're trying so hard to steer a sinking ship towards salvation. Or at least salvage.

Huawei and HTC are our main topics this episode, but we'll also talk about the revival of one of Verizon's bad habits and Xiaomi's software shame with our colleague, Ryne Hager of Android Police, on this episode of the Pocketnow Weekly!

Rank #8: Pocketnow Weekly 078: CES 2014 wrap-up - the best and worst from Vegas

Podcast cover
Read more

Horrible sickness. Missed flights. Broken promises from major airlines. Desert air-induced hacking. A too-late arrival followed by a too-early departure.

That's just a partial list of the challenges faced by the four-man three-man Pocketnow team at 2014's International CES in Vegas, easily one of the most difficult trade shows we've ever done. But while the road was rough, the payoff was (mostly) worth it: in exchange for our hardships, we were among the first to spend time with some of the world's newest and hottest mobile gadgetry, and we did the best we could to share it with you in a timely fashion.

Now that we're all back home and recovering, it's time to take a deeper, more-relaxed dive into our CES 2014 experience. While we're still sick and one of our microphones is still three time zones away (thanks, American air carriers!), we've still decided to come together, under the capable supervision of stand-in host Jaime Rivera, to talk Samsung, Sony, Huawei, Pebble ... and even a surprise or two from ZTE! So crack open your NyQuil and put on those ratty old sweatpants; the Pocketnow Weekly is here, as always, to ease you into the weekend with a soothing session of mobile-tech talk (and more than a few off-color jokes).

There must be a sense of defeat permeating through Cupertino this week, nevermind this season. Even as we've seen the headwinds blow against Apple, it didn't seem possible that this corporation on a rocket to the moon could be stopped from constant growth. Well, perhaps it needs a break this winter. Or maybe it'll break down? Is this losing quarter just a sign of that the innovation engine is sputtering at the spaceship?

Podcast cover
Read more

We're digging into our coverage of Samsung's Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, but while our first impressions are positive, we're seeing slower pre-sales than last year's Galaxy S6. At the same time, Apple is lowering expectations for future smartphone sales. At least detachable screen PC sales are looking up as tablet sales are falling flat. Huawei has a big announcement in store for their first phone collaboration with Leica, and LG finally reveals when the G5 will start shipping.

We've been hard at work covering news stories and prepping for the next generation of phone reviews. We recently started a new series of videos delving deeper into tech explanations and photography term definitions, and of course we'll be tackling your questions and comments. Today's episode of the Pocketnow Weekly podcast is made possible by:

It takes so much time to search through coupons and deals to find what you are really looking for. It’s a time waster and not very fun. Well, there is a new app that is changing how online shopping works, making the money saving experience more enjoyable. and it only takes 60 seconds to get started.

It’s called Benjamin.

Benjamin considers your favorite brands, sizes, and your interests to find awesome deals for products you actually want. Other deal sites offer things like photography lessons and yoga classes, but Benjamin works with brands such as Ray Ban, Patagonia, and even the NFL to bring you real deals that you actually want.
Benjamin has been called the Tinder of personalized shopping – because you never know what deal you’re gonna get and all it takes is a left or right swipe to claim an offer.

And just for our listeners, the folks at the Benjamin app have set up a webpage where you can claim deals such as:
- Half-off Spotify Premium
- Hulu for $3 a month
- 25% off Starbucks gift cards
- and half-off Ray Bans
It’s all about the benjamins! And keep some extra benjamins in your pocket by heading over to benjaminapp.co/pocketnow to see all the special offers for yourself!

It's the busiest Mobile World Congress we've had in several years! And we've had over two dozen phones from Energizer, the battery maker with a bunny as a mascot, an LG phone that makes you play puppeteer and plenty of jumping between halls at the Fira Gran Via.

But of course, we have to talk about another folding phone: the Huawei Mate X. We've got Nicole Scott of Mobile Geeks and Adam Conway on to talk about that and our favorite things from this show on this episode of the Pocketnow Weekly.

We were actually pleasantly surprised at the substantial announcements made at WWDC, both in hardware and software. The beastly Mac Pro (and its insane companion monitor) aside, we got some awesome updates to iOS 13 and the iPad Pro, now a viable secondary display for Macbooks! But no talk was perhaps as impactful as the company taking a stance in data privacy, via a few very particular steps. Joshua Vergara is joined by Brandon Miniman and TK Bay to discuss Apple, Mac, and privacy.

It's all ahead on the Pocketnow Weekly!

Enjoy the highlights from the show in our YouTube version, found above! We encourage you to listen in on the whole conversation below or by tuning in via your favorite podcasting application. We are on Google, Apple, Spotify, PocketCasts, via direct download, and more!

Unpacking the Galaxy Z Flip and the MWC cancellation

Unpacked was a very interesting event, with Samsung announcing not just their Galaxy S20 line but also their latest foldable, the Galaxy Z Flip. Thunder E of Booredatwork joined me at the Samsung Creator's Lounge after the event wrapped up to talk about the Z Flip and why it's an interesting follow up to the Galaxy Fold.

Our exit from Unpacked brought a major plot twist -- GSMA completely cancelling Mobile World Congress 2020. After years of MWC, its loss in 2020 automatically makes this one of the most unique and different times in the tech industry.

Today's episode is an exploration of the affects of the Coronavirus and how it has caused certain companies and vendors to pull out of Mobile World Congress 2020. GSMA, the organizers of the show, just recently sent an email to registered attendees that JV talks a bit through in this episode.

Isa Rodriguez brings her lifestyle perspective to the show on this episode -- which is perfect, because it seems the brand new Moto RAZR is made just for her! But will the design and the fun form factor be undercut by the high price point and spec sheet? JV and Isa bring you some nostalgia and then talk about the new Motorola foldable!

We encourage you to listen in on the whole conversation below or by tuning in via your favorite podcasting application. We are on Google, Apple, Spotify, PocketCasts, via direct download, and more!
