092 || How to Believe God's Sovereignty Over Your Dream || Hunter Beless

Hunter Beless believes God has called her to seek after those He has awakened to guide them back to their Heavenly Father. She passionately exercises this God-given design through her roles as a wife, mama, podcast host, and writer. Though they stumble often, she and her husband Brooks, strive to display God's covenant-keeping love through their marriage and oneness. They have two little girls, Hadley Grace (3) and Davy Kathryn (1) and currently reside in Fort Campbell, KY where Brooks serves in the US Army. Hunter, Brooks, Hadley, and Davy love journeying through life together for the glory of God. Listening to this episode, you’re going to be bathed in scripture, whether you realize it or not. This woman knows her bible, and it inspires and spurs me on to get to reading (and memorizing!) mine with more regularity. Hunter reminds us that God is so powerful that He can fulfill dreams regardless of circumstances. You’ll learn about re-orienting your fear of the things of this world to the God of the universe and how that gives us courage to keep taking the next step. She also teaches us about embracing our limitedness with the grace and freedom to do what is within your capacity and let go of the rest! And for all you moms with little ones at home, I asked Hunter after we stopped recording about the resource she’s used to help her 3-year-old daughter memorize God’s word, and I’ve got a link to that in the show notes for you (and me!). 40 || How to Just Take the Next Step || Julie Landreth

Leave a review of the show on iTunes or Stitcher Julie Landreth has a passion for healthy and thriving relationships–especially marriages. She is a speaker and wife coach who loves sharing with women her passion for prayer and how to cultivate a thriving marriage. She leads a growing number of women in San Jose, CA through her weekly WifeLab curriculum: Loving Well, The Art of Praying for Your Husband. This year Julie and her husband will celebrate 13 years of cultivating a marriage filled with intentional love. Their secret? A date night every Friday since her now 10-year-old son was 7 months old. In addition to speaking, writing, and teaching, Julie is also a freelance photographer and designer. In our conversation, Julie shares about the whirlwind romance she and her now-husband had while they were dating—mostly long-distance—and then the disappointment that sunk in shortly into their marriage. She talks about how her dream—to start a revolution of marriages that last—began in her little corner of the world. Now she’s moving ahead, one step at a time, listening to what God has laid on her heart and walking forward, even when she feels resistant to doing so. Like a lot of my guests, Julie mentions the inner chatter – those thoughts that tell her she’s not enough and cause her to question her dream. And then she shares how she’s fought back against it. Finally, there’s a TON of good stuff in our conversation about how Julie has prayed for her husband, encouraged other women to do the same for theirs, and how little changes in her own thoughts, behavior and reactions have made all the difference in strengthening their marriage. So, if your marriage is anything but a 10, I think you’ll hear some helpful things from Julie today. 063 || How to Not Miss the Dream || Alisa Keeton

Alisa Keeton is a wholehearted lover of God who uses fitness as her tool to spread the Gospel message. She is the founder of Revelation Wellness – a non-profit ministry that trains fitness instructors and teaches fitness enthusiasts as well as the author of The Wellness Revelation – an 8-week journey to losing what weighs you down so you can love God, yourself and others. In this episode, Alisa talks about how, at first, she said she’d “never do that” to the dream God had for her. She shares how He surprised her and made it happen anyway, not with her kicking and screaming, but with a sweet ambition to create something that would bring people the same kind of freedom she’d found in Christ. At the time of our conversation, Alisa had just returned from a three-month sabbatical. She talks about the decision to take time away to slow down, rest and let God love her, and she shares some of what He did in her heart during that time. This conversation really ministered to me, and I hope it will to you as well, especially the reminder of who we are as daughters of the King. + + + Want to chat more about today’s show? 107 || [SOLO] Because You are a Daughter of the Most High King || Merritt Onsa

In this solo episode, I’m talking about identity, specifically our identity in Christ as daughters of the Most High King. You’ll hear how I struggled early on as a Christian to even understand what this means and how to live it out. To explain what it means to find our identity in Christ, I also share what it’s not, meaning you’re going to hear a bit about my messy life before Jesus (um, yes, it’s still messy AFTER Jesus but just in a different way now!) I share a bunch of verses from scripture as proof that this is who we are: Daughters of the Most High King, in the hope that you’ll be inspired to dig into God’s Word to see for yourself how this truth is reflected there (not because of who we are but because of Who He is). If you don’t believe it right now, that’s okay. But then, once you see it for yourself in His Word, I hope you’ll begin to rehearse it in your own mind (i.e. renew your mind with this truth) and then begin to believe it and live it out and let it be the freedom and hope with which you pursue whatever dream God has placed on your heart to do with your one precious life. 098 || Because Fear Wants You to Stay Stuck || Jenni Eastin

If fear has kept you from walking forward in your God-shaped dream, this episode will remind you that you’re not alone. This conversation with Jenni Eastin will also provide perspective on how to finally move forward even if you can’t see the finish line. In this interview, Jenni gives us the assurance that God is in control and that we can trust Him enough to surrender our dreams to Him. She shares two intimate, real-life stories that are her constant reminders of these truths and motivation to share the hope she’s found with others. Jenni helps normalize that feeling of wanting to start on your dream but getting stopped in your tracks by the voices that taunt you with doubts about who you are, how God made you and how you have no business dreaming your dream. But, along this journey, she’s discovered tools that help her fight back against those voices. One is the permission to start sloppy and another is a redefinition of success. If you’ve ever tried to run away from the dream God’s given you, I hope this interview is just what you need to gain a little perspective and maybe even get started—even if it’s a little sloppy. Jenni Eastin is a hope-filled, freedom-fighter set on sharing stories that leave a mark on other’s hearts. In everyday life, Jenni gratefully supports and encourages her two children, ages 6 and 10, and has been married to her husband, David, for over 18 years.  Jenni has several degrees in special education and behavioral disorders and has most recently earning a PhD from the University of North Texas. 121 || Listening to Your Feelings Can Sabotage Your Dream || Laura Harris

Writer, mama, and former silent-struggler Laura Harris shares her vulnerable story about the night on the bathroom floor when she realized that she was on the verge of depression and had to speak up about it. Laura is a writer, mother of three, and Christ follower. Her words from the heart and parenting advice have been featured in Chicken Soup for the Soul, The Huffington Post, Motherly, Scary Mommy, and Babble. She uses her faith, her passion for writing, and honest life experiences to encourage, educate, and inspire mothers to grow in their walk with Christ and in their joy. This episode provides some real-world tools for dealing with discouragement, whether in life or as it relates to your dream. Laura talks us through her darkest moment—when she was on the verge of depression—and how God brought her through it with truths to help tackle the lies she was believing and actual steps she could take any time she finds herself in that place again. Laura’s honesty will remind you of the good that can come out of your own vulnerability about your deepest struggles. You’ll learn strategies to add to your toolbox, including the reminder that “feelings aren’t facts.” Laura also teaches us, through her example, how to find the people who are struggling with some of the same things and why that’s so valuable, mostly so that you can stop believing the lie that you’re the only one who’s ever felt this way.   If you’re currently feeling alone in your struggles or the pursuit of your God-shaped dream, I promise you, you’re not! 137 || Why are You Hiding Your Dream? || Kat Armstrong

Kat Armstrong didn’t set out to become an author. Rather, she wrote her first book in order to steward a message about living in the fullness of the Greatest Commandment: how we, as women, might love the Lord with all of our mind and strength as well as our heart and soul. I loved the opportunity to chat with Kat once again—a return visit to the show since her first appearance way back in 2016. I’ve been keeping up with her from afar on social media and always feel a connection to her desire to empower women and point them to Jesus. In this episode, we stray a bit from the questions I ask all my first-time guests. Instead, you’ll hear the tearful story of Kat being confronted by another student in a seminary classroom years ago—an incident that ultimately played a role in the message Kat shares throughout her book. You’ll also hear about two conversations that challenged Kat about why she was withholding her important message to women and what she did as a result. Kat doesn’t hold back from sharing about the rejection of her first book proposal, her grief at the loss of her father, and how she has rejected the trap of being focused on numbers of followers, sales, and stats and instead considered how her work might help people. You’ll learn what it looks like to keep pursuing your dream in the midst of opposition and why it’s so important to do that. One of my favorite parts of the conversation is Kat’s reminder from Scripture that our adequacy comes from God not from our own competence, training, experience, or efficiency. That is a message I need to hear and remember just about every day of my life. There’s so much more goodness in this one, which is also the last episode of Seasons Six and of 2019. Give it a listen and be encouraged about why you can’t hide your dream or hold back from the ways God is calling you to love Him and love others. 101 || Finding Your Dream Among Too Many Options || Jane Springer

In this week’s episode, wellness and style coach Jane Springer reminds us that God often uses the difficulties and challenges He has allowed in our lives to serve as inspiration for our dreams. In her case, it was her own health struggles that led to her desire to help other women with theirs. She teaches us the importance of learning to pay attention to what’s going on inside of you as you consider a direction for your dream. She also offers an example and a challenge on the importance of being true to who God created us to be—our authentic self. Jane demonstrates courage in sharing her dream because she’s willing to talk about it even though it’s not yet perfect. She has wrestled with indecision along the way, which hasn’t been without consequence. I appreciate the realness with which she shares those struggles and reminds us that struggle is often part of the process of dreaming. In hearing her story, you’ll discover the value of trusting God’s timing and the importance of waiting on Him to show you what’s next instead of stepping out because you’ve grown impatient with the wait. A bit more about Jane Springer: Jane is a Certified Life, Wellness and Style Coach. She began her wardrobe consulting business in 2012 and has been coaching women since 2014. Jane’s dream is to help women to feel as beautiful as God knows they are. Through one-on-one coaching, presentations and retreats, Jane help women get unstuck and move forward in their relationships, work, health and their God-given purpose. She is an active volunteer for her church as a religious educator and marriage prep facilitator, and she relishes her role as wife, mom, step-mom and grandmother to 10-year-old twins. TAKE THE LISTENER SURVEY Please take a few minutes to respond to our listener survey. You’ll be entered to win your choice of a $10 Amazon gift card or a signature Devoted Dreamers coffee/tea mug! Deadline to enter: April 15th! Entrepreneur Amber Brannon returns to the podcast to share how she’s grown in her faith since our last conversation in 2017, and how God has transformed her dependence on Him personally and in her business. In this episode, you’ll learn the importance of being clear about who you are (and who you aren’t) as you pursue your dream. Amber describes what that process was like for her company, Copperheart Creative, and how it helped them discover the types of clients they love to serve. Amber teaches us what she learned from trying to control everything – including that it’s not possible – and how she’s letting Jesus take control, instead. Plus, there’s a tried and true sign that you’re not trusting God; she knows because it happened to her. Amber reminds us what it’s like when you try to go it alone, and you’ll be inspired to follow in her footsteps to find women who can walk with you on the journey of pursuing your dream. Amber is a lover of people and Jesus, and a self-confessed coffee-choc-oholic who wants to unleash stunning design on the world. After much wrestling with God she quit her steady full-time job with no backup plan and started doing freelance design work. 130 || How to Turn Up the Volume on Truth || Charlena Ortiz

Charlena Ortiz teaches us how she’s learned to trust Jesus as her sustainer, sought the unforced rhythms of grace in the pursuit of her dream, and discovered patience with herself and with Him in the process. In this episode, Charlena offers a helpful question to ask yourself if you’re still trying to figure out your dream. And she explains how we might gain clarity on the lies we believe and, instead, turn up the volume on what is true—based on Scripture. You’ll also discover how your dream can become a tool for personal transformation and why that’s so important. That rings true to my experience as well. I like to say that it’s not so much about what the dream is but about what God’s going to do with you in the process! An introverted extrovert, Charlena has developed a conviction of helping women break through barriers. After studying Business and Marketing in college and becoming a certified coach with a focus on Positive Psychology, she moved to Silicon Valley with her husband and started her coaching practice. After years of coaching, she founded Grit & Virtue, a personal development company for modern-day women, a place where women can thrive from a holistic perspective. While today her main focus is on taking the company to new heights, she also makes time to coach clients, speak, and write about all things personal and professional growth. Charlena lives in beautiful Colorado with her husband, boxer dog and soon to be rainbow baby girl. 110 || [SOLO] You Have Great Value and Worth || Merritt Onsa

This solo episode is tied directly to my last solo episode (#107, so go listen if you haven’t already). In this one I’m talking about our value and worth because we are daughters of the Most High King. You’ll hear a few more bits of my story prior to becoming a Christian, and then even after Jesus rescued me, about how I rested my value on something that was ultimately going to fail me. I share the best response I ever got from a Christian man who knew he couldn’t bear the weight of my identity on his back. And I talk a bit about what’s going on my world right now that has revealed to me that I am, yet again, struggling to remember that my security is in Christ. You also have a homework assignment after this one. It’s just a little journaling, so whether that practice is new to you or you have stacks of journals laying around, I hope you will plan for some alone time after listening to this one. I provide a few journaling prompts as well as tips on how to journal if you’ve never done it before. You’ll find the show notes, the verses I mentioned, and links to the past episodes I talked about, here: http://www.merrittonsa.com/podcast/110 MENTIONED ON THE SHOW: Episode 107 – Solo Episode – You are a Daughter of the Most High King Episode 109 with Cari Jenkins – Believing the God Who Sees You Looking for the printable scripture cards I mentioned again in this episode? What is it that, if you lost it, would make you feel sick to your stomach or cause you to forget that there’s any good thing in your life? What would feel like the end for you if you lost it? 095 || Because You'll Never Be Fully Ready to Start|| Megan Sjuts

Welcome to Season Five of The Devoted Dreamers Podcast! This week’s guest, Megan Sjuts, is the owner of Building 07, offering a full range of professional design services. Her mission is to simplify the design process and serve creative professionals and business owners. When she is not behind the screen designing for clients, she is teaching graphic design courses at Rogue Community College in Southern Oregon, where she lives with her husband, Elliot, their chocolate lab, Dixie, and four chickens, Sunny, Popcorn, Peanut and Penny. The word “transition” sums up what life has been like for Megan over the last few years: starting and finishing grad school, marriage, moving across country, starting a business, and teaching at a local community college. If you’d asked her five years ago what she thought her life would look in 2018, I wonder how many of those things would have been on the list. I’m guessing not many! In this conversation, Megan teaches us her favorite strategy for combating those ugly feelings that come with comparing your behind-the-scenes to what you see in others online. You’ll hear the story of how she discovered graphic design (and it wasn’t because she went looking for this career path) and why not knowing the path in advance doesn’t make it the wrong path. She also shares the lessons she learned from a difficult conversation she had early on with one of her first clients. These will be vital to anyone who is starting a business or dealing with client communications. If you’ve never felt ready to start working on your dream, this interview offers some perspective and maybe even a kick in the pants to get going even before you feel it. 113 || [SOLO] You Were Created for a Reason || Merritt Onsa

Please take a few minutes to respond to our listener survey. You’ll be entered to win your choice of a $10 Amazon gift card or a signature Devoted Dreamers mug! * * * * * * * There is purpose for your life; you are not here by accident. I believe there’s enough in God’s word to back this up, so today I’m talking about the two perspectives I’ve been wrestling with related to this topic and how we decipher our God-shaped dreams. The first perspective is that He uses our gifts and talents for our good, for the good of others, and for His Kingdom. The second perspective is that He uses us in spite of our weakness, failure, or even our blatant rejection of His calling upon our lives. If you’re not sure yet what your God-shaped dream might be, you may find yourself feeling confused. Should your dream flow out of what you’re naturally good at or the skills and life experiences that have made you who you are today? Or might God be calling you to something completely outside of anything you’ve ever considered? Listen in, and let me know what you think. This solo episode is tied directly to my last two solo episodes (#107- You are a Daughter of the King and #110 – You Have Great Value and Worth), in case you want to check those out before you hear this one. I’ve got a homework assignment for you again. I suggest you to take the next 30 days to process through and write out your answers to these questions if you’re still trying to figure out your God-shaped dream.
