Mitch asks really well researched and insightful questions, and importantly doesn’t interrupt the people he’s interviewing. Love technical depth he gets into without getting boring. Not to put down Trunk, but wish he wouldn’t make it all about him.

Rank #4: George Lynch (December 2019)

ROCK TALK WITH MITCH LAFON presents guitarist George Lynch. (Recorded December 2019)

George discusses his latest project, Dirty Shirley, and the various other projects (KXM, Sweet & Lynch...) he's been involved with over the last few years. Also, will there be a Dokken/Lynch Mob and Lita Ford tour? Though it's been announced, the answer seems unsure. Other topics covered include: branding, getting off the traditional album-tour-album cycle, being challenged, growing as a person & player, chasing 'the dollar', being pigeonholed, if the personalities hadn't clashed - could Dokken have been a stadium act (at approx. 14mins 19 secs.), Frank Marino, Uli Jon Roth and much more.

Commenting on his various projects: "It's my own damn fault for not saying no to anything... But it probably isn't the smartest thing in the world - business wise or on a lot of other levels."

On Dokken: "Don took a gamble that he could disband the group, take off on his own and keep that momentum going. To a large extent that was misguided... the rest of the band suffered because of that (arguably in a lot of ways). We had what we had all worked for, ripped out from under us... When it came time for us to reap the rewards of that, it was pretty much stolen out from under us by one of us. One of our brothers and that was very hard for me to take."

On the upcoming Lita Ford, Lynch Mob, Dokken tour: "Well, listen - nothing is set in stone. I'll preface this by saying that everything could fall apart tomorrow, but assuming everything goes according to plan..."

Lynch Mob new music: "Lynch Mob will have a new release in time for next year's touring."

Who's on the new Lynch Mob album: "Jimmy and I worked on the new record initially... then we brought in Joe Retta (from Heaven & Earth - who's working on vocals)... Sean McNabb is not. Next year, Brian Tichy's coming back."

Rank #5: Songwriter Desmond Child (2019 interview)

Podcast cover
Read more

Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon presents songwriter, Desmond Child. This is the show's second interview with Desmond (recorded winter 2019).

Desmond discusses his latest album 'Desmond Child Live', chanteuse Lena Hall, working with Jon Bon Jovi, making KISS a chart success, times when collaborations didn't work, song doctors, the Scorpions Humanity: Hour I, working with Alice Cooper, lost confidence, Nashville, ASCAP & streaming, and much more.
On working with Bon Jovi: "We had chemistry together. We had a fate that was leading us to each other."

On writing the massive KISS his I Was Made For Lovin' You With Paul Stanley: "I showed up at a KISS rehearsal and during the break... at SRI there was a big grand piano up on the stage. Everybody took off and just he and I were at the piano and we wrote the song. It was a magical experience. I told him, 'do these dramatic chords over a disco beat - just four on the floor and put heavy guitars on it. He was like, 'ok, but I don't think Gene's gonna like that, but whatever." And Gene never liked it, not to this day. But It's there biggest international hit."

Early Aerosmith experience: "It started out not good with Aerosmith to tell you the truth. I was forced on the band. I walk in and there's just some roadies around and I hear some kind of a loop going on backwards. Steven who's a real people pleaser, I didn't even say a word yet, says 'hey come over here - listen to what we're doing.' And so I listen to it and it was this backwards loop and he started singing, 'Crusin' For The Ladies... Cruisin' For The Ladies,' and I said, 'that's really bad.' Those were my first words to Aerosmith."

On his friend's reactions to wanting to work with the Scorpions in 2006-07: "Lots of my friends and manager said, 'Oh, come on - don't work with them. They're has-beens. They do beer halls in Germany, like forget it.' I don't know, I just felt something and I believed in them... I had rules. I made Klaus go to singing lessons with Eric Vetro."

On his legacy: "My music has touched billions of people all around the planet. They don't know who wrote it. They don't even know who sang it, but they know the song. So, for me, it's been very fulfilling"

Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon presents Lamb Of God guitarist Mark Morton (recorded January 2020).

Mark discusses his new album ETHER as well as Lamb Of God's 2020 new album & touring plans.

Selected quotes from the interview -

"I have become less and less interested in chasing that technical prowess and that unbelievably scientifically technically amazing approach to guitar. I've never been that kind of player. Maybe at times I have aspired to that, but the more and more I go into my career the more and more I write songs and work on different projects. I've far more interested in songwriting. I happen to be a guitar player, so I write songs on guitar... I'm really interested in the song. I'm just much more fulfilled by a good song than I am by any kind of 'shreddy' solo or technical display."

Lamb Of God: "We have never once, at all, considered fan response in any sort of creative decision ever. We have never written a song for anybody else except the five people in the room. Not for management. Not for label. Not for fans. Not for media. Not for anybody. When we like it, it's done."

Lamb Of God's upcoming plans: "There's going to be a new album in 2020 and there's going to be extensive touring around it."

Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon presents Tony Montana (from jack Russell's Great White - recorded in December 2019). This episode is co-hosted by Alan Niven.

Tony discusses his new band Shadow & The Thrill, their new album Sugar Bowl, working with Jack Russell, his time with Great White, working as a solo artist, touring with Alice Cooper, the two Great White camps & a possible reunion, and much more.

"Once Bitten... Twice Shy - good grief. There are a couple of moments in your life when you realize at that moment that your life is going to change - like for sure. The moment Alan Niven sat us in the car and said, 'this is the song we're going to cover,' and you hear it and just see the genius of it going forward... It's pretty awesome, I have to say."

Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon presents legendary guitarist, Frank Marino (recorded December 2019).

Frank discusses his new Live At The Agora Theatre, VIP and LIP (less important person) concert ticket packages, his upcoming US tour, how he approaches live shows & set lists, fake crowd swell, upcoming new music, and more.

"If you're going to create a VIP package, by definition you're creating a LIP package (a less important person package). What you're doing is creating two classes of supporter. The ones that can afford to be your supporter and the ones that can't. I won't do that... Who the hell do we think we are? We're not saving the world here. We're supported by these fans. If not for them, there wouldn't be a show."

"I don't like to call myself an artist. I think it's an over-used word. I'm a musician."

"When you begin to look at music as a brand, you change the motivation as to why you do it. I never ever did a record with that in mind."

Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon presents Buckcherry's Stevie D. (recorded January 2020).

Stevie D. discusses the band's latest album Warpaint, the spirit of Buckcherry, the band's sound, why Josh Todd & The Conflict, Spraygun war, how important is radio play to the band, the new collaboration with WifisFuneral, their upcoming ACOUSTIC project, the album 15, drummer Francis Ruiz and much more.

"It was important to us (when the band splintered) to keep the spirit of Buckcherry and what that is. It was important to keep that intact. So, in writing, that was definitely in the forefront."

"Rock is still alive and selling out stadiums."

"For us, radio is important, but it's not the answer because we built a great touring business. We can still go out and sellout where ever we play. It would be nice to have the radio support but it wasn't necessary during the Warpaint tour."

"You've got to stay true to who you are... Buckcherry has never been a band that is doing what every one else is doing. And getting successful has been icing on the cake for us."

"We'll do another full length record by end of summer. We're constantly working on stuff. Right after Wifisfuneral, we do have a couple acoustic songs coming out."

The 15 album: "There was nothing riding on it. We were at this place where we could do it or not. There was no record company. There was no manager or nothing. It was just five guys in a room. Go figure, the thing blew up."

British pop icon Peter Noone (Herman's Hermits)

Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon presents revered British pop icon, Peter Noone (recorded at the end of 2019).

Peter discusses his extensive yearly touring schedule, being a music enthusiast, the beginnings of Herman's Hermits, songwriting, The Beatles & more, finding their place in a crowded radio marketplace, lyrics then and now, personal choice, working on Broadway, The Tremblers, a Farewell tour, his love of music, Casablanca Records, Neil Bogart, Tom Petty, Jimmy Page & John Paul Jones playing on Herman's Hermit songs and much much more.

On getting started in music: "I started off as an enthusiast of music. I bought records and went to see live music. I knew lots of people who were in groups that played in their sister's attic and the little local nightclubs. One day, I found myself in a band where I was not just and enthusiast, but a participant."

On a possible Farewell Tour: "I'm more like Mick Jagger. Arrogantly believing that I can pull it off for at least another ten years... Music is my hobby. When I hang up the phone with you, I'm going to play some music. That's what I do. When I'm in my car driving to a gig, I listen to music. Some people listen to the world news. I don't. I listen to music. And enjoy it, and smile and sing along and dislike and love and all of those things. So, why would I want to stop doing that?"

On Neil Bogart: "I don't know how good he was at business, but he was a great character."

On Coronation Street, he jokingly says, "I was in it in 1961 and it's still the number one show in England even without me in it."

Mike Tramp (former White Lion - Jan. 2020)

Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon presents former White Lion singer, Mike Tramp (recorded January 2020).

Mike discusses his upcoming M3 Rock Festival appearance as well as his new Second Time Around album (out May 2020), his inspiration for new music, the story coming with the new album, why he's never ventured into producing or managing other bands, celebrating 30 years of Mane Attraction, aging gracefully, Vito's concern, and much more.

On his new album - Second Time Around: "Compared to Lord Of The Rings or Game Of Thrones, you can actually go in and out of my solo albums and not be confused in where the hell you are. This one basically re-introduces some songs that I wrote and recorded in different versions earlier on when I floating around this break I had in the middle where I attempted... wrongly attempted... a regrettable attempt to do a new version of White Lion. There were times when I stepped into the studio because I felt I had these songs. So, some of these songs are from early on - written at a different time, but anytime that I listen to anything - it is as current as Stray From The Flock, Nomad, Maybe Tomorrow or even Capricorn... It's still the same story."

"I only will sing the songs that I can sing and I will not attempt even for a second to be Mike Tramp 1988 - 27 years old. There are a lot of old rock n' roll singers trying to hold on to their hair and trying to squeeze out 10% of the voice they once had. It hurts me watching my heroes trying to walk out on stage as Fat Elvis - not giving their best anymore because they simply cannot let go of what they once were. When you're not good enough anymore you leave the field or become a car salesman. I can't be Mike Tramp 1988 and there are a lot of singers from 1980's who simply cannot do what they are trying to attempt."

Songwriter Desmond Child (2019 interview)

Zak Stevens (Savatage, TSO, Archon Angel - Jan. 2020)

Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon presents singer, Zak Stevens (Savatage, TSO, Archon Angel). Recorded January 2nd 2020.

Expect Archon Angel to tour Europe (including Greece, France, Germany, etc...) in April 2020.

During our conversation Zak discusses his new band Archon Angel, the importance of branding, the 'punishing' touring schedule with TSO, guitarist Joel Hoekstra (Cher, Whitesnake), the return of Savatage, the future of Archon Angel, 70 000 Tons Of Metal cruise, Aldo Nova, coming in for the recording of the Savatage album Edge Of Thorns & becoming the band's new voice and much more.
Selected quotes from the interview:

On surviving TSO's grueling tour schedule: "You have to have a militarized routine. You just get into it and go. It's the wildest thing I've ever seen - the TSO tours. It's a different animal - that's for sure."
Archon Angel's press release describes the new Fallen album as having the 'classic Savatage sound', Zak comments: "When we started with the Archon Angel stuff, we didn't think this was Savatage-esque. Even I didn't think it was overwhelmingly like Savatage. The press is hearing stuff... I wonder if that's more like something the person is hearing for themselves and going 'oh yeah, we've been wanting Savatage and this sounds like it.' When, we, the musicians looked at it... It may be here or there, but not like an overwhelming thing. I'd be the first one to say, 'wait a minute I can't... this is just like Savatage. I'm not going to dive right into that. When you come from that history (I come from singing in Savatage), there's bound to be something that is going to remind somebody of that. You really can't get away from it, so don't try to run. It's gonna catch you."

The return of Savatage: "Yes, if you talk to the guys in Savatage, they would love to come together. We're just waiting on some decisions from above to see what the next step is." He further added, "All of a sudden, I'm seeing five Savatage songs in the second half of the TSO show and I'm going, 'Hint?' Who knows? I see some building on that side... Al Pitrelli, Johnny Lee Middleton, myself, Chris Cafferty, Jeff Plate, we're all kinda sitting there saying 'hmmm - this is very interesting...' Send Savatage out to tell a few stories from their old albums... We know we got it. We know that it's a demand and we know that there's a business demand especially coming from Europe... Be ready for the call."

Mitch asks really well researched and insightful questions, and importantly doesn’t interrupt the people he’s interviewing. Love technical depth he gets into without getting boring. Not to put down Trunk, but wish he wouldn’t make it all about him.
