Rank #3: 139 - Story Time With Big Steve Parish

Podcast cover
Read more

We're extremely honored to have the one and only Big Steve Parish on No Simple Road as part of our lead up to Skull & Roses Festival. Steve Parish has been a primary member of the Grateful Dead family for 50 years. Steve first joined the band as a roadie in 1969. It wasn’t long before he became Jerry Garcia’s trusted gear handler and began to manage the Jerry Garcia Band. Over the years, Parish and Garcia forged an unbreakable bond. Steve was Jerry’s best man at his wedding and was at his bedside when Garcia fell into a coma in 1986. Parish was the last friend to see Jerry before his untimely death in 1995. Steve has continued to maintain his relationships with the rest of the Grateful Dead family. As Weir once said to him “Blood is thicker than water but what we have is thicker than blood."

We get to hear some amazing stories from Big Steve and get down to the nitty gritty of what it means to be such an integral part of this amazing Grateful Dead Family for over 50 years.

ANDREW HENDRYX

Did you know that music can accelerate child brain development and strengthen intellectual, emotional, and motor skills, as well as overall literacy? Bringing music into the classroom can help kids explore the mind-body connection and become comfortable with self-expression. Sadly, many children’s music programs are lacking in the resources they need to let kids explore this creative space. That's why Osiris is happy to partner with The Mockingbird Foundation.

Founded in 1996, The Mockingbird Foundation is a volunteer-run non-profit organization dedicated to improving access to music education for America’s youth. Each year, the Foundation awards grants to dozens of music education programs, and funds those grants through a combination of fundraising, publishing, and the curation of Phish.net, one of the earliest Internet fan communities.

Mockingbird is entirely volunteer, with no staff, no salaries, and no office - so every dollar really does make a difference in providing children’s music programs with the staffing, instruments, and support they need. The foundation gives over 100 - 150,000 dollars every year in grants. To donate or to learn more, visit mbird.org. That’s M-B-I-R-D - dot- org

Rank #8: Episode 109 - Life Is Live With Greg Ormont From Pigeons Playing Ping Pong

Podcast cover
Read more

Our guest this week is the one and only (scrambled) Greg Ormont from Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. We talk to Greg about what it means to give 100%, how to balance work and life in a way that’s meaningful, realizing that at some point we have to take care of ourselves, how being a theater kid gave him a solid foundation, and a whole bunch more!

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong is a band whose very existence is rooted in the unyielding quest for joy and positive energy. Blending infectious funk grooves, psychedelic jams, and experimental electronics, the Baltimore four-piece’s new album, ‘Pizazz,’ is a buoyant, blissful reminder of just how much fun music can be. Eschewing the traditional funk band lineup that typically includes keyboards, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong constructs effervescent soundscapes with just two guitars, bass, and drums, crafting their music with a sophisticated ear for both open space and dense layering.

Rank #9: Episode 136 - Living A Beautiful Life With Steve Kimock

Podcast cover
Read more

We're honored this week to have the one and only Steve Kimock as our guest! While one can say that his genre is rock, no one niche has ever confined him. Instead, through the years, he’s explored various sounds and styles based on what’s moved him at the time, whether it’s blues or jazz; funk or folk; psychedelic or boogie; gypsy or prog-rock; traditional American or world fusion.

Threaded through this expansive and highly nuanced musical landscape is Kimock’s signature sound, the prodigious product of his ability to articulate crystal-clear tone, melody and emotion into intricately woven music crafted with technical brilliance. His passion and devotion to performing live is matchless, and his unparalleled ability to embrace and capture his audiences musically is the stuff of legends.

We talk to Steve about his journey in music, finding solace in 'something different', the experience of the music, what it feels like to play music with his Son, the Beat Generation, and a ton more!

Our guest this week is the one and only Goose! Goose is an indie-groove band based out of Norwalk, Connecticut. Rick Mitarotonda is the guitarist-singer-songwriter whose folky, hummable melodies are supported by Peter Anspach on guitar/keys, and a deep-pocket rhythm section of Trevor Weekz on Bass and Ben Atkind on drums. The band’s music is both memorable and danceable; an organic and easy-to-love mix of funk and contemporary folk, with touches of reggae, jazz, blues, and rock.

We hang out and talk about coming together as a band, lessons they've learned through being on the road, translating a live sound into something memorable in the studio, their rise in popularity and how it's affected them, and a whole bunch more! Make sure to check them out on Nugs.net!

Rank #13: Ep 85 - Saving The World With Andy Frasco

Podcast cover
Read more

Andy Frasco of Andy Frasco & The U.N. and Andy Fraso’s World Saving Podcast joins the No Simple Road Crew on The Porch for a morning filled with laughs, unexpected therapy, and creating connection. We talk candidly about addiction & getting it together, making choices based on what we think we’re supposed to do rather than what we want, Andy’s new album ‘Change Of Pace’, and why we are only just now finding out we should have been friends a long time ago.

Andy Frasco & the U.N.’s performances have been described as a "boisterous blend of harmonic funk and jazzy influences, all topped with boundless energy". Frasco frequently calls additional guest musicians to join his band on stage during sets, as well as fans. Shows are highly improvisational featuring impromptu “battles” between band members, who graciously hop off stage into the crowd to contest their instrumental fortitude against one another in a sporting display of individual musicianship. Frasco's shows are also highly interactive, often stopping the show to speak directly to audience members, as well as invite people in the audience up on stage.

Do yourselves a favor and got to: andyfrasco.com for tour info, news, and merch and then go listen to Andy Frasco’s World Saving Podcast on Apple Podcasts or anywhere podcasts stream.

Rank #17: Episode 89 - Breaking The Barriers With the legendary John Medeski

Podcast cover
Read more

We had the honor of spending some time with John discussing his evolution in music, what it’s like to create utterly improvisational music in, and for, the moment, music as prayers and the sacred nature of sound, the difference between producing music and playing it, his new album with Mad Skillet, and a whole lot more.

Equally comfortable behind a Steinway grand piano, Hammond organ or any number of vintage keyboards, John Medeski is a highly sought after improviser and band leader whose projects range from work with John Zorn, The Word (Robert Randolph, North Mississippi Allstars), Phil Lesh, Don Was, John Scofield, Coheed & Cambria, Susana Baca, Sean Lennon, Marc Ribot, Irma Thomas, Blind Boys of Alabama, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and many more. Classically trained, Medeski grew up in Ft.Lauderdale, FL where as a teenager he played with Jaco Pastorius before heading north to attend the New England Conservatory. He released his first solo piano record, A Different Time, on Sony’s Okeh Records in 2013, and current projects include a new album in the works with his band MadSkillet (Terrence Higgins, Kirk Joseph, Will Bernard), and HUDSON (a collaboration with Jack DeJohnette, John Scofield & Larry Grenadier), plus a documentary on Medeski Martin & Wood.

Listen to Mad Skillet on iTunes or anywhere you stream or download your tunes!

Rank #19: Episode 55 - Neal Casal Takes Us Around The Sun

Podcast cover
Read more

Continuing our High Sierra Music Festival interviews with the one and only Neal Casal!!! We sit down with this legendary master of the groove and talk about what it's like to create 5 hours of original music on the fly... and then be asked to do it again, walking the line between playing someone's music and doing something new that feels familiar, and a whole lot more.

Circles Around The Sun explore new horizons on the band's upcoming double album, Let It Wander. It's the first new music from the quartet since their acclaimed 2015 debut, Interludes For The Dead.

LET IT WANDER will be available August 17 on CD for $24.98. A limited-edition vinyl version of the double album will be released the same day for $39.98. All of the music will be available via digital download and streaming services.

Guitarist Neal Casal, keyboardist Adam MacDougall (his bandmate in the Chris Robinson Brotherhood), bassist Dan Horne and drummer Mark Levy recorded seven instrumentals for LET IT WANDER earlier this year at Castaway 7 Studios in California.

Originally, Circles Around the Sun (CATS) was only supposed to record some Grateful Dead-influenced instrumentals to be played during the set breaks at the Dead's "Fare Thee Well" concerts. But the response was so positive, and the band was having so much fun making music together, that they all agreed to keep it going.
