Another friend and his got themselves a business doing garage doors and thought they knew what they were doing...but didn't. Things didn't go to plan and they weren't the marketing geniuses they thought. Tommy decided to keep the business for himself and bought his buddy out.

He started a Christmas light business with another friend, got 40 reviews from prior customers on the first day, and 1,500 requests in the first month. He went full on in the marketing, door to door, boots on the ground and more. They even had a 90% retention rate on repeat customers. They had built a breeding ground for success.

Well, our guest, Jared is a door knocking ninja! He has sold tens of millions of dollars managing teams who simply knock on doors. It's incredible.

It all started when Jared was in college. He went to a meeting where they were recruiting people to make $30k during the summer simply knocking on doors for a pest control company.

Day 1, only a single person got a single sale all day. He initially thought it sucked, but decided to stick it out, went all in and learned everything he could.

Jared became one of the top sales reps in the country for this company and sold 300 accounts just that summer. They offered him a job to train the next years' reps. They were selling over $30 million of revenue for Orkin every single year.
Jared made over $40k in 3 months that first year.
Currently, he sells 1 in 7 accounts door knocking.
Knocking on doors can be intimidating, but it doesn't have to be.

Door knocking is an art, a science, and a skill that you can learn. If you learn it, you can do extremely well. It's not something that's a one and done. You can't just try it once then give up.
Jared's best advice, the important thing you have to do is you have to learn it. It's best to find someone who knows what they're doing and do it.

How many dollars would you give me today, if I gave you a brand new, shiny customer who gave you $1,500 per year? What would the value of this be? 
You have to remember, the lifetime value of a customer is 8-10 times the initial transaction.
Does this bit of information change your answer?
I got asked a question recently, How much should I spend on marketing?
Well, there isn't really a clear, one size fits all dollar amount answer. But, I can tell you, the general answer for this is
as much as possible.

When you scale back for a little while you can have what you want in the long run. You can't take 60% of your companies revenue and put it in your pocket and expect to scale.

Do you want to build a team that can get you free? Do you want enough revenue to pay competent people well? 
There are two ways to do this, pay yourself as little as possible for as long as possible. Spend as much as possible to acquire as many customers as possible for as long as possible.

He has a home service company, hundreds of employees and does 8 figures a year. Jon started as an 8th grader wanting to make some money to buy cars. He was in the lawn care business until his freshman year of college and left. Never thought he’d get back into it and planned to move on to technology.

It was a fluke, around 2005 when he ended up back in the business. He didn’t want to get back into it, it just sort of happened. But, after he got it he decided it was time t build it up. Once he went to residential, his goal was 1,000 clients. The team hit that goal and kept going.

There are 3 secret sauce things that helped him build a company, and he dives into those during our chat.

Starting to study marketing. Which was called direct response marketing when he started. This was the foundational thing that changed his life.
The single most important thing in terms of building a company is building a team. You can’t go too slow and you have to trust them.

One common mistake I see people make is we get into ur down season so we look back at the previous year and we’re exhausted. look at shortcomings, watch 17 hours of teaching. Then we start to overshoot and over systemize what needs to be in place for the next year. It’s ironic.
Stop seeing this as an impossibility. It's not, you can have it if you believe.

You don't have to be a super ridiculous leadership guru ninja person.
Or have all the answers.
You don't even have to have a perfect understanding of finance.
Year 3 my business started to change. Lightbulbs started firing off. Even in my total imperfection and lack of understanding, my business tripled. Just because of imperfect execution of basic concepts.
You are not inferior or lacking. You have to get out of those beliefs. I want to help you get what you want. It starts with belief. You don’t have to be Albert Einstein. You just have to figure basic things out.
Simplicity is the Ultimate Sophistication ‚ÄĒ Leonardo Da Vinci

Stop missing the big picture. You can have what you want probably with the skills you currently have, if you can focus on 1, 2 or maybe 3 things that you need to fix this next year. Just think and address the problems. It doesn't have to be perfect, that doesn’t matter. Just improve.

But, you can also learn from other business owners. Yo don't have to reinvent the wheel. Just take what others who are successful have done and pivot it to your business.

Today, I am going to share with you 4 things I wish I could have known when I started my business.

I wish that I knew that building a successful company takes time...I thought it was quick. It got really hard the first year, working dark to dark then coming home and reading forums to try and learn. I only did $24k the first year. I didn't know what I was doing.
Not all advice is created equal. We don't have advice overload, we have opinion overload.
