#156: Why Food Affects Your Mood

Podcast cover
Read more

I'm no stranger to the effects food had on my mood. I realized this nearly two years ago when I eliminated the top allergens like gluten and dairy from my diet. Of course, when it's not in your diet, you don't always recognize how well you feel. But when you put it back in man do you notice.

Or at least I did.

I've narrowed down my specific mood culprit to gluten. It hits me like a freight train roughly 24 hours after exposure and takes a solid 24 hours for me to become rational again. It's not like I feel bad, I just can't seem to shake the mood. The constant annoyance and anger that lurks under my skin, waiting for the moment to erupt.

It's not pretty and something I consciously work to avoid for the sake of my health and my family.

While I know it's not readily understood - that food can impact your mood - there is actual science to why this happens and what you should know about eating for your mood. Inside this podcast, I break it all down and share my healing strategies for health.

#002: Eat More to Eat Less

Podcast cover
Read more

We've been led to believe for years that calories matter and that health just boils down into one simple equation;

Calories in = calories out

If and only if we could get this right we would be a nation of thin healthy people.

But come on, how can we believe this? We have to look around and realize that 90% of all people on diets are doing it through calorie counting and are many of them getting anywhere other than deprived?

We're not going to deny the fact that calories have an impact, yet what we must realize is that not all calories are created equal. And understanding this is what really matters.

If you're tired of starving your body and restricting yourself from the pleasures of life you must listen to this episode to learn why you must eat more to eat less.

#114: 5 Ways to End Negative Self Talk and Change Your Health

Podcast cover
Read more

I was convicted this weekend sitting at a conference, Jen Wilken is the speaker, and she spoke words that shot straight to the heart. Not in just one area but multiple, including our inner self-critic.

Who it is we call ourselves and how we talk to that person that we've made yourself to be.

It was a powerful message on standing true to your new name, who you are in Christ and positioning yourself to talk as any good parent would raise their child to talk to someone else and themselves.

Like a ton of bricks, it all came rolling in, what makes me think that continually beating myself up and talking worse to myself than I would to any other thing was okay? I mean did these insults I daily flung inside my mind change me? Did they make me better? Did they bring results?

No, none of it and believing that they would is a bunch of lies.

These words weren't just sitting in my mind, they were being stored, they were being used, and they are the driving force creating my actions. What I preach to myself every day, and what you preach to yourself every day is ultimately what our brain perceives and therefore responds accordingly.

So what are you thinking? What do you believe to be true and how is this driving your life. Thes questions are just a little glimmer of what we talk about on the podcast with guest expert Amy Van Slambrook.

Amy Van Slambrook is a licensed psychotherapist working to help heal past trauma's, strengthen relationships and help you live up to who you were designed to be. On the show I'm asking Amy:

  • How do your past trauma's affect your biology and beliefs?
  • How we can heal from past trauma's
  • The benefit of community and relationships in our mindset.
  • And so much more.

The question heard around the world, how do we balance hormones?

Hormones have been the villain for years. Now more than ever, we have a hormonal epidemic on our hands. From irregular periods, PMS, early menopause, hot-flashes, low-libido, erectile dysfunction, depression, anxiety, PCOS, endometriosis, joint issues, and countless others, we have a real issue going on.

While traditional medicine takes you on a very narrow journey of trying to mask all of these things with a simple daily pill or cream there are other ways that actually work to fix the root. In the end to create an even harmony of your body doing the job it was designed.

Now I'm not saying that modern medicine isn't working, for some, it is working quite well. In other situations we need it. But outside of that, the solution has been only one your doctors can prescribe. But today we're going to learn about the treatment you don't have to sit around and wait for but things you can do today to find relief.

On this podcast, we go in-depth to five natural ways to balance hormones starting today.

#003: Healing With Food With Dr. Terry Wahls

Podcast cover
Read more

The discussion around autoimmunity and disease is scary, but can you heal yourself with food? My interview with Dr. Terry Wahls answers this question.

Dr. Terry Wahls is generally recognized as a hero not only in her own story but in the story of thousands of others. While it is heartbreaking to see so many struggle with autoimmunity and the negative consequences and symptoms that plague them, Dr. Wahls did not escape this either. Being wheelchair bound and almost bed-ridden Dr. Wahls never lost hope and instead, clinged to her purpose in life.

There had to be answers, she was a fighter and she was determined to take back her health.

After countless changes that slowly lessened the severity of the disease, she hit a home run with a formula that worked, reversing her Multiple Sclerosis back to near normal functioning.

As you can imagine, this lit up the eyes of so many who were watching her struggle on this journey. Her recovery was a miracle and paved the foundation for a support system that would later help thousands of others reverse their symptoms of disease.

It is a fascinating story with a person who has a deep passion for others to live their best life. You'll want to tune into this episode as it is yet another example of someone listening to the cries of their own body figuring out a way to heal it.

#014: How to Break Free of Being Busy with Alli Worthington

Podcast cover
Read more

There are those times in your life where you feel like your reality just gets slapped across your face.

Mostly because I like to keep myself too busy to notice the obvious, especially when the obvious is hard.

Alli's book was handed to me in one of those moments. One of those seasons where I was drowning in everything from the endless amount of e-mails in my inbox, to school snacks that I kept forgetting, mounds of laundry (we’re talking like an entire pack-n-play full (which makes a rather nice clothes basket) and twenty different projects I said yes to, eighteen of which I was regretting.

Fortunately, it wasn’t an angry moment when my sister handed me this book and declared the entire family was going to read it. I actually looked at the title and started salvaging because I knew my life was mass chaos. No beautiful mess here, just grimy, icky, horrible mess.

As I dug into the book, I couldn’t put it down. It was as if she was speaking to me word by word, page by page. I needed it, I soaked it in and I wished for more when it was over so I just read it again.

My life was far beyond busy and I had reached every end of overcapacity.

I realized I was a hypocrite a liar and that was just getting through the shell.

Here I was someone promoting and posting to the world advice that I wished I could take but knew I didn’t have the means to. I mean the laundry never ends, looking for work never ends, the to-do list is never, ever gone. I surely couldn’t break free of busyness but I wanted everyone else to because I knew the damage.

But I hit the pit. What seemed like a bottomless pit of shame, guilt and still a never-ending to-do list was pretty rocky. I got bruised and battered on the way down but looking back it was exactly the jolt I needed to get my head back above water and breathe.

What started out as gasping for air has now just turned into a lot of daily deep breaths. And while I’d like to tell you I’ve broken free, I haven’t yet. I’m still plagued with fear, worry, and anxiety about what is next, about letting go and ultimately missing out. Yet the other side of me recognizes and realizes and sees that in breaking busy I’m actually more free to be me.

The journey never ends I’m sure but I’m hoping today’s show will be the boost of encouragement you need to get rid of the things that hold you back and truly become the person you know you can be.

Today’s episode will rock your socks off!

Podcast cover

The best self-care practices for enneagram nine is explained inside. It's a subject I'm delighted to talk with an actual type nine on what this looks like in life.

Self-care is a subject that I've thought long and hard about. Similar to the body positivity movement - it's one that has a lot of good and bad. But if we go back to the original definition of the word, then I think we can start to understand that self-care is not just another series of benchmarks and checkmarks, but it's a filling from abundance.

Of knowing where you are and loving yourself for being there. Yet willing to take the necessary action to fill that self up. Whether through nourishing foods, bubble baths, or anything in between. Self-care is what you need and providing that when you need it - even if it is just a morning of extra sleep.

So maybe all of that to say, we don't have to practice self-care but rather make self-care a part of who we are — living self-aware.

The Ennea-health series was born from this. A place of actual knowledge to take action, creating a healthier life that is who you are not what you do.

Today we continue digging into the Enneagram type nine through an interview with an online friend. Today I talk with Alannah Cook about her health journey how she has learned to use her strengths to overcome her health hurdles. Nine's, you bring light and comfort to the world that people rely on. While you see turmoil and the daily stress of keeping the peace, you give an enormous amount of positivity to everyone you encounter.

You are genuinely receptive, accepting, and emotionally stable. So much so that you often suppress your own feelings, lacking a sense of awareness to fight for peace. While we love this about you - we don't want you to stop loving yourself for other people.

That is the easy trap for the nine to get into - giving so much to other people they are too exhausted to give back to themselves. Want to get healthier? Let your enneagram number be your guide. Inside I teach enneagram type six how to use their type for health. Getting outside of standard health benchmarks and learning how to live in health rather than for it!

Six’s, you are the loyalist. You are deeply-rooted in truths and have an amazing ability to perceive the world around you. Not only that, but you are great at troubleshooting and coming up with solutions. You can view and troubleshoot problems before other types would even recognize there is a problem.

But with this in-depth perception can come the recognition that the world isn’t always a lovely place. Your security, or lack thereof, is your greatest fear - often leading to “worst-case-scenario” thinking. These thoughts can trap you pushing you down the anxiety spiral and closing you off from using your real gifts.

Six’s, it’s time to be gentle with yourself. To challenge the “inner committee,” residing in your head working to confuse and stress you. Instead, put aside the committee and learn to listen to you. You are smart, you are capable, and you are worthy - you have to learn to trust yourself enough to believe it.

The best self-care practices for enneagram type five is explained inside. It's a subject I'm delighted to talk with an actual type five on what this looks like in life.

Today we continue digging into the Enneagram type five through an interview with an online friend. Today I talk with Cassidy Tyler about her health journey how she has learned to use her strengths to overcome her health hurdles. Learn all the details and what this could mean for you inside the podcast.

Want to get healthier? Let your enneagram number be your guide. Inside I teach enneagram type five how to use their type for health. Getting outside of standard health benchmarks and learning how to live in health rather than for it!

Enneagram type five, you value understanding. Your a deep thinker and value time spent processing the world around you. You thrive on self-sufficiency, independence, and alone time - collecting thoughts, ideas, knowledge, silence, and space. You pour your soul and energy into your thoughts.

As a five, you build your identity in your mind. Working to find stability and security in life through collecting or hoarding what it is that you think will keep you secure. In this, you generally live a minimalistic life, with relatively few needs and the stamina to provide for yourself. You are often suppressing your deep emotions, stirring them over in your mind for days before you’re able to articulate them.

But as you work to get healthy, you’ll learn how to feel the emotion when it comes and then let it go. Through this, you’ll develop courage outside of collecting knowledge, allowing you to take action and trust your gut. In health, you’ll be able to connect with your body and recognize that you, too, are a human, and your needs are valid.

Inside this episode, we talk about how an enneagram five can live in health, all while honoring the space and security they crave. We've also created a free download for teaching you how to make health who you are through your enneagram number. Download the guide, print it off, and see how much it resonates with your life.

Three’s, you’re a spark plug. You love setting goals and checking them off, living through a cycle of set goals and meet the goal. When challenged, you rise to the occasion. Being disciplined and not easily distracted, you inspire others by achieving what others think cannot be done.  You have many strengths that are highly possessed when it comes to living a healthy life.

But through the hype, what you want most is to be loved. And you think this love comes through what you achieve. While threes are the most likely to achieve set goals, you’re also one of the top enneagram numbers to fear failure, and therefore you mask yourself, covering up the real you with what you think people want you to believe.

To get healthy, threes, you have to believe at the core of who you are, that you are not loved because of what you’ve accomplished but because of who you are.

The work isn’t easy, but it is worth it. Inside today's podcast, we dive into how to make healthier changes for enneagram type three. We talk through the health benefits of processing your emotions, creating nourishing rhythms, and creating balance.

We've also created a free download for teaching you how to make health who you are through your enneagram number. Download the guide, print it off, and see how much it resonates with your life.

#182: The Best Self-Care Practices For Enneagram Type One

The best self-care practices for enneagram type one is explained inside. It's a subject I'm delighted to talk with an actual type one on what this looks like in life.

Self-care is a buzzy word and with good intention. The fast-paced lifestyle of hustle hasn't done much for our health. While it's not to say you can't hustle - it is to say that you need some extra self-care to do it without losing yourself in the process.

But did you know self-care isn't just about fuzzy bath bombs and coconut buns? The word origin dates back to ancient Greece, where it was used to describe an in-depth knowledge of self. Knowing how you work, what you need, and then deciding how to provide that.

It wasn't another standard or benchmark but a knowledge of self.

I recorded an entire podcast on the subject and why the enneagram is so vital to true self-care. Honestly, it made me love self-care for what it is rather than for doing it, hoping to achieve something.

The Ennea-health series was born from this. A place of actual knowledge to take action, creating a healthier life that is who you are not what you do.

Today we continue digging into the Enneagram type one through an interview with a dear friend and type one. Today I talk with Shelby about her health journey and how she has learned to use her strengths to overcome her health hurdles. #180: Bringing Back Real Self Care Using the Enneagram

Podcast cover
Read more

Self-care is nothing new. It's a concept said to have been kicked around since Ancient Greece. Of course, like everything we have the intended purpose and the abused definition that has made self-care all too confusing.

Of course, we can't argue that it's natural to define self-care in your own way. And many people and different groups have throughout generations. But I think the latest definition of self-care that looks more like self-indulgence confuses the real meaning of what self-care means.

In the shuffle of bath bombs and structured routines, we can lose ourselves or fail to find ourselves, which means we've not participated in self-care but rather self-indulgence. Don't get me wrong, I love the word indulgence just as much as you, and there is nothing wrong with a nightly bath, an occasional massage, or getting your nails done.

Those are all well and good, necessary and caring for yourself in some way but we can't let self-indulgence steel what needs to be the real and accurate definition of self-care - which means to know yourself enough to know how to care for yourself.

Not to care for yourself in a way someone else has defined - because this isn't a picture of you but of you slapping someone else's needs onto yourself. The truth of the matter is, there are a lot of people making big money with the new idea of self-care and making you buy into the idea that this is the path to health.

I'm clearly on a rant - but I think this needs to be crystal clear.

Self-care is not defined by the world but by you - by knowing yourself, the whole of who you are and then caring for that being in the way that brings you life. Can it look like self-indulgence, absolutely - but it doesn't often start there. It begins by knowing yourself - the real being under all of the masks.

So how do we do that? Inside this podcast, I talk about the importance of digging up what self-care means to you and why this is important. I also show you how to learn more about your true self using the Enneagram. It's the start of The Ennea-Health Series, and it all begins right here.

#179: Reviving the Body Positivity Movement

Podcast cover
Read more

Fifth grade, it was the first encounter I had with my physical appearance. I had on jean shorts that had gotten a little snug over that year.  You could say I was early to blossom and I didn't quite know what to do or how to dress the new-found curves and extra pudge my legs have developed through the winter.

It was our end of the year class party - at the swimming pool. The sun was beaming, and finally, the brisk chill of spring had left. Summer was here. I remember that morning, before the start of the last few days of my fifth-grade year - trying on my swimsuit. The one that too had grown a little snug for me.

But I slipped it on, dressed and was giddy with excitement that finally it was our turn for the epic pool party that ended the last days of elementary school and welcomed us into middle school.

As we walked to the pool that day, I remember giggling with my friends. Planning the next birthday party where we'd finally have a chance to finalize the dance routines we'd been making up. As we were walking, I started hearing one boy and then multiple boys, chanting, "thunder thighs."

The words seemed to echo throughout the entire town.

"Thunder thighs, thunder thighs, thunder thighs." Followed by a massive roar of laughter. I turned, knowing exactly who they were speaking of - as I was one of the first and only to blossom in my class that year. They were directly talking about me! About my thighs that stuck out below my too-tight shorts.

I was mortified, holding back tears that stung my eyes. We hadn't even gotten to the pool, to reveal my full body in skin-tight spandex that has no mercy.

That moment changed me for life. It's etched in my brain and has carried me to my now 31-year old body. I doubt I'm alone - and I realize that few people can escape the negative stigma that comes with body appearance. The bar that is so hard to reach with far too many people falling short. But don't we try?

Even today as I type these words, I can't say that my thighs bother me, but I would say it's one area that I'm most likely to not-like when I look in the mirror. I doubt it's me talking but that nasty-fifth grade boy that ruined the way I think about them.  But what do we do with this?

How do we overcome body image issues and step into true body love - embracing the movement of body positivity? That's what I talk about inside today's podcast - the revival of the body positivity movement for what it's supposed to be.
