DAVID GOGGINS | Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds

The mind is a powerful thing. It can be used as a tremendous source of good or a tremendous source of destruction in your life. The way you choose to train and use it could, quite literally, be the only thing keeping you from accomplishing your greatest ambitions. Today, I am joined by former Navy SEAL, ultrarunner, endurance athlete, wildland firefighter, and all-around badass, David Goggins. We talk about starring down adversity, using challenges as the fuel to propel yourself forward, the sacrifices you'll need to make to be successful, race issues and political correctness in America, and how you can master your mind and defy the odds. DAVID GOGGINS The man I have the privilege of introducing you to today, David Goggins, truly needs to no introduction. Suffice it to say, David is one of the most insane human beings on the planet and someone I have respected and extremely inspired by over the past couple of years. We've all watched his videos and most of us have read or listened to his latest book but having the opportunity to sit down face to face with him only increased my level of respect for what David has gone through, the odds he's overcome, and the incredible work he's been able to accomplish despite those odds being stacked against him. Gentlemen, set this one on repeat as David and I have one of the most powerful conversations I've ever been part of. Building Atomic Habits | JAMES CLEAR

Every man knows that building effective and productive habits and systems is a crucial part of teeing him up for success. But, knowing and doing are two different things. And, it seems to me that most men fail to bridge the gap between the two because they don’t know how to build those habits into their lives. That’s why I’m stoked to bring you into the conversation that James Clear, the author of Atomic Habits, and I had about the subject. Today we discuss why you should focus more about systems and processes rather than goals, the power of changing your identity over changing your habits, an interesting take on discipline, will-power, and self-control you probably haven’t heard of, and focusing on the fundamental unit of progress and ultimate success. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Creating powerful results Working in harmony Eliminating failure A margin of safety The ultimate outcome Associating pain with progress Identity-based habits Your habits are the pathway Behaviors will lead the belief The 2-minute rule Mastering the art of “showing up” The four laws of behavior change Designing your own environment Preparing for battles Adjusting your systems JAMES CLEAR Gents, I’m stoked to introduce you to my guest today, Mr. James Clear. James has been covering the topic of habits, systems, goals, and processes for a very long time and, last year, he wrote a book titled Atomic Habits. Many of you have probably read it. At the time, we weren’t able to schedule a podcast but I’m honored that we were able to have him on now. He’s the creator of the Habits Academy, a weightlifter, photographer, and a New York Times Best Selling Author and he’s been focusing on biology, neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy to help men become more successful on their own individual paths. I know you’re really going to enjoy this one and get a ton of value from it. IRON COUNCIL Gent’s, I just need to interrupt very quickly because I want to let you know that inside our exclusive brotherhood, the Iron Council, we’re doing a deep-dive into the subject of this conversation – habits. The 500+ men are uncovering the habits that are working for and against them, creating the systems to ensure they stick with the good habits and eliminate the bad, and holding each other accountable to staying on the path. 139: Wild at Heart | John Eldredge

"Deep in his heart every man longs for a battle to fight, an adventure to live, and a beauty to rescue." This is one of my favorite quotes about masculinity and, if you've been following us for long, you've heard it from me a thousand times. Today, I am honored and have the privilege of talking with the author of that quote and one of my top 5 most recommended books on masculinity (Wild at Heart), John Eldredge. We talk about the secret to a man's soul, the single question every man needs to have answered, society's attack on gender, how to embrace authentic masculinity, and why every man is wild at heart. SHOWNOTES The secret to a man's soul The single question EVERY man needs answered Society's attack on gender How to embrace authentic masculinity How masculinity is earned How to overcome being a poser Pornography and the disintegrating family's effect on men and society How to find out who you are Why rites of passage are so important How to focus more on your internal world than your external world The collapse of gender Permission to be men The masculine virtues JOHN ELDREDGE I am honored to introduce you to my guest today, Mr. John Eldredge. When I set out on this journey to become a better man, his book Wild at Heart was one of my go-to resources for an understanding of who I am as a man and how men show up in this world. At the time, I never thought I'd actually have the chance to have a conversation with him but after some back and forth and getting our schedules pinned down, we were finally able to lock something in. John is an author, a counselor, and a teacher. He's been working with men and teaching them how to transform their lives for more than two decades. It's interesting to see that the book, Wild at Heart still strikes a nerve with men across the world more than 15 years after he wrote it. Above and Beyond the Call of Duty with Medal of Honor Recipient, KYLE CARPENTER

What causes one man to jump on a grenade to save a fellow Marine when most of us would run the other way? That’s exactly what my guest today, Kyle Carpenter, did when attacked by the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2010. Through his actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor as the youngest living Medal of Honor recipient. Today, Kyle and I talk about the days leading up to his heroic action, what exactly happened, his injuries sustained, his road to recovery, and his evolution as a human being since. We also cover his new book, You Are Worth It: Building a Life Worth Fighting For. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Living life one day at a time Joining the Marines  Always looking for a challenge Searching for the right path Preparing for the unknown Valuing those around you Learning from others Life after boot camp  Helping the oppressed  Getting mission-ready Surrounded by Taliban  Accepting your fate  A level of detachment  Another day in Afganistan Going through rehabilitation  A life well lived Living a bonus round KYLE CARPENTER Gentlemen, today I have the honor of introducing you to my friend and the youngest ever living Medal of Honor recipient, Kyle Carpenter. Kyle joined the Marine Corps at 19 and not long after was deployed with the 1st Marine Division to Afghanistan where he threw himself on a grenade to save a fellow Marine. This man is one of the most humble people that I know and I’m inspired by his experience, his life, and who is he as a human being. Before we get into the conversation, I’m going to read you his Medal of Honor Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as an Automatic Rifleman with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 1, 1st Marine Division (Forward), I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom on 21 November 2010. Lance Corporal Carpenter was a member of a platoon-sized coalition force, comprised of two reinforced Marine rifle squads partnered with an Afghan National Army squad. The platoon had established Patrol Base Dakota two days earlier in a small village in the Marjah District in order to disrupt enemy activity and provide security for the local Afghan population. Lance Corporal Carpenter and a fellow Marine were manning a rooftop security position on the perimeter of Patrol Base Dakota when the enemy initiated a daylight attack with hand grenades, one of which landed inside their sandbagged position. Without hesitation and with complete disregard for his own safety, Lance Corporal Carpenter moved toward the grenade in an attempt to shield his fellow Marine from the deadly blast. When the grenade detonated, his body absorbed the brunt of the blast, severely wounding him, but saving the life of his fellow Marine. By his undaunted courage, bold fighting spirit, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of almost certain death, Lance Corporal Carpenter reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. FFN 107: Crafting the Perfect Morning Routine

Today, I want to talk about such an important topic and one which is easy to overlook simply because we’ve all heard about it so often. That said, I believe establishing a healthy morning routine is one of the most important things you can do during your day as it really establishes the benchmark, the framework, and the foundation for the way the rest of your day will go. The reason that I think most people overlook (or can’t even stick to a morning routine) is because there’s so much advice about it already and we begin to believe that we have to pigeonhole ourselves into one way of doing it. Here’s what I’m here to tell you:  I’m going to share my morning routine. Now,  that doesn’t make it the morning routine. It simply means that it works for me. The most powerful thing if you can do with regards to your morning routine is to find something that works for you. This is a process of experimentation. So, again, I’m going to share with you what works for me. If you like it, adopt it. If you don’t like it, don’t adopt it. If you like parts of it, adopt part of it. A More Complete Beast | JACK DONOVAN

What does it mean to be a complete beast? This is a question my guest, Jack Donovan, attempts to answer in his latest book, appropriately titled, A More Complete Beast. There is a reason the title is likely to resonate with you, as a man. Each of us understands that we are both man and beast. Today we cover so much about the subject of masculinity including why being a man has to be an intentional choice, the power of what he calls the "conquering eye," how to avoid becoming a victim of victims, and how each and every one of us can become a more complete beast. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS What it means to become a more complete beast Why you have to make an intentional choice to be a man Why men are perceived as a threat to society Why you should challenge yourself as a man The four masculine tactical virtues - strength, courage, mastery, honor Why some people try to redefine words to fit their narrative The power of the "conquering eye" Why it's important to define an honor code for yourself Why you should care about some people's opinions Avoiding become the victims of the victims Sifting through the noise of others Why there is no honor in being a victim, only in overcoming it Why vulnerability is not as powerful as modern society would have you believe Why masculinity is not a mask JACK DONOVAN Gentlemen, my guest today is a man a lot of you are familiar with and someone I've had on the podcast before. His name is Jack Donovan and he is the author of several books on the subject of modernity and masculinity including The Way of Men, A Sky Without Eagles, Becoming a Barbarian, and his latest release, A More Complete Beast. As you may know, Jack is a fascinating man and probably one you wouldn't expect to hear on this podcast (in fact, I made a joke about Jack, a pagan, and myself, a Mormon, walking into an ax-throwing bar just after this interview). That said, his views on the subject of manliness and masculinity, although controversial, resonate with so many of us because they're spot on and refreshing in a time when more and more of society has a hard time even discussing what it means to be a man. 134: Unfu*k Yourself | Gary John Bishop

At times, we tend to get into our own heads and become our own worst enemies. We often write off anyone who happens to disagree with us, puts us down in any way, and label them as "haters." But it's our natural tendency - especially as high achieving men - to be our harshest critics. It's valuable at times and drives us to do great things and, other times, it creates unnecessary barriers to our success. My guest today, Gary John Bishop, author of Unfu*ck Yourself joins me to talk about how to redefine yourself by becoming unrealistic, how to uncover the narratives we tell ourselves, the difference between knowing something and being aware of something, and how to get out of your head and into your life.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS
How to get out of your head How to develop a no-nonsense approach to life The critical difference between affirmations and personal assertions Why self-help is inferior to self-development and growth How to uncover the narratives you tell yourself Understanding the study of Oncology and how it applies to your growth The difference between being wrong and being inaccurate How to become more present in your life The power of telling yourself you're an asshole Why we should not concern ourselves with the past and the future The difference between knowing something and being aware of something How to redefine yourself by being unrealistic How to interrupt the notion of who you already are

GARY JOHN BISHOP Gentlemen, my guest today is Gary John Bishop. He is a personal development expert and the author of Unfu*ck Yourself - which is a book I just picked up to read a couple weeks ago. In reading it, I can appreciate Gary's no-nonsense approach to human development, and high-powered mentoring. And, I knew right away I had to get him on the show. He's worked with top athletes and Fortune 500 executives in his personal development career. This guy is real. He's raw. He tells it like it is and pulls no punches which is exactly what we, as men, might just need in order to come to some realizations about our own lives, how to get out of our own heads, and out of our own way. 179: How to Develop More Grit | Brian Call

We live in a culture of ultimate softness but there seems to be a resurgence of men who understand the value of being tough, resilient, and gritty. These are the men I aspire to be more like because I understand how crucial it is, as Theodore Roosevelt states, to "keep the barbarian virtues." Today, I am joined by my friend, Brian Call, AKA Gritty, to talk about how hunting and connecting with nature makes you tougher, why we need to learn from the men who have gone before, the role parents play in developing fortitude in their children, and how you can develop more grit. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS How to get started in bow hunting How hunting makes you tougher Developing discipline through hobbies The dangers of being disconnected from your food How the mass of our meat gets processed Why eating meat is not unethical How hunting creates a wide range of emotional sorrow and joy Why you need to learn from men who have gone before How to keep calm in a potentially dangerous situation The role parents play in developing grit in their children The danger of the "outrage society" in which we live Why it's not a good idea to search for "happiness" How to overcome fear and weakness through exposure How minimalism helps you become free BRIAN CALL Gentlemen, today I have the honor of introducing you to my friend, Brian Call. He is an avid bow hunter and the founder and host of the Gritty Podcast where he talks all things bowhunting and developing more grit. I've been following him and his work for quite some time now and I finally had the chance to connect with him in this candid interview. What really resonates with me about Brian is his willingness to share not only his victories but his setbacks and how he's managed to overcome them. I hope you enjoy this powerful conversation with a man I really admire and respect. Forging Mental Toughness | Ryan Lange

We all know that we need to be mentally tough. There's no question of that. Yet, forging mental toughness seems to be one of the most elusive pursuits. All of us know how to develop physical toughness but rarely do we have any practices in place that will help us develop mental toughness. My guest today, Ryan Lange, is one of the most mentally tough men I know. It's amazing considering he's only 21 years old. I won't get into all that he's accomplished just yet but please understand that the amount of physical strain he's put on his body is simply incredible. Today we talk about developing the capability to transcend pain, fostering the willingness to embrace hardship, why hard work is omnipotent, and how to forge more mental toughness. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Developing the capability to transcend pain Developing a willingness to embrace the hardship The critical importance of long-term focus How to break those long-term goals into micro goals The dangers of not developing mental toughness How to effectively train the mind Why hard work is omnipotent How to maintain focus in a world of distraction Our obligation as men to be mentally fit Keeping yourself from wasting experiences The power of linear progression RYAN LANGE Ryan Lange reached out a couple months ago and asked to come on the podcast. Honestly, at first thought, I wasn't going to have him on because so many people talk about mental toughness. It's a little like saying you want to talk about leadership. But then, I started looking into what this kid has done. And, I say kid because he's only 20 years old. Now, I realize he's a man (not a child) but I'm absolutely blown away with what he's done already. He's completed 50K's, 50 milers, 100 milers, and at the end of last year completed a 238 mile race in Moab, UT. To give you an idea of what that means, it took roughly 86 hours for him to complete. I'm incredibly inspired by Ryan and his approach to mental toughness. You will be too.
