Rank #1: DAVID GOGGINS | Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds

Podcast cover
Read more

The mind is a powerful thing. It can be used as a tremendous source of good or a tremendous source of destruction in your life. The way you choose to train and use it could, quite literally, be the only thing keeping you from accomplishing your greatest ambitions.

Today, I am joined by former Navy SEAL, ultrarunner, endurance athlete, wildland firefighter, and all-around badass, David Goggins. We talk about starring down adversity, using challenges as the fuel to propel yourself forward, the sacrifices you'll need to make to be successful, race issues and political correctness in America, and how you can master your mind and defy the odds.

DAVID GOGGINS

The man I have the privilege of introducing you to today, David Goggins, truly needs to no introduction.

Suffice it to say, David is one of the most insane human beings on the planet and someone I have respected and extremely inspired by over the past couple of years.

We've all watched his videos and most of us have read or listened to his latest book but having the opportunity to sit down face to face with him only increased my level of respect for what David has gone through, the odds he's overcome, and the incredible work he's been able to accomplish despite those odds being stacked against him.

Gentlemen, set this one on repeat as David and I have one of the most powerful conversations I've ever been part of.

Rank #2: The Power of Uncomfortable Truths | SEAN WHALEN

Podcast cover
Read more

The truth is often uncomfortable. And, frankly, most of us aren’t willing to take a deep, hard look into what we know to be true. We do this because we’re afraid. Afraid of what we might see. Afraid of what it may expose in ourselves. Afraid of what the truth may require us to do moving forward.

My guest today is a friend and long-term mentor of mine. His name is Sean Whalen and one thing he’s been consistent about his desire to seek and share the truth. And, he’s revealed, for better and worse, some truths about myself that I was unwilling to acknowledge for a very long time. Today we talk about why some people despise the success of others, acknowledging what kind of men you need to become to achieve what you want, why most people are blissfully dissatisfied, and the power of embracing uncomfortable truths.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • Producing results
  • Tearing others down
  • Identifying with pain
  • Building a physique
  • Addictive patterns
  • Breaking social contracts
  • Validating mediocrity
  • Change your circle
  • Habits & rituals
  • Implanting your vision
  • Loving yourself
  • Becoming a machine

SEAN WHALEN

My guest today is my good friend and long-term mentor, Sean Whalen. He has been instrumental in helping me build Order of Man into what it is but more importantly, me into who I am. I don’t always agree with or, to a degree, get along with him but I believe that is the power of a coach and mentor – someone who you can respect but challenges you to look at life in a way that is difficult and uncomfortable. And Sean certainly makes people feel uncomfortable. He says out loud what most people believe to be things you don’t say at all and, in the process, his videos and messages have been viewed hundreds of millions of times. Obviously, he’s a very polarizing man but he forces you to look at situations and events in new ways and has personally helped me achieve some incredible results in my life. IRON COUNCIL

Gents, let me pause the conversation very quickly. I’ve seen a tremendous uptick in new members in the Iron Council and I can only imagine the reason is that in times of uncertainty, men look to bring stability and order to the chaos. And, that’s exactly what we’re doing inside the Iron Council – giving you the tools and framework to predictably and efficiently produce results in your life. If you’re trying to start a business, rekindle a romantic relationship, connect with your kids, lose that spare tire, build wealth, become more influential, or any other goal that you may be working on, the Iron Council, has what you need to make it a reality. When you join us, you’ll get the tools and framework you need to do what you’ve simply been daydreaming about for a very long time. If you’re ready to get to work, join us. "Deep in his heart every man longs for a battle to fight, an adventure to live, and a beauty to rescue." This is one of my favorite quotes about masculinity and, if you've been following us for long, you've heard it from me a thousand times.

  • The masculine virtues

JOHN ELDREDGE

I am honored to introduce you to my guest today, Mr. John Eldredge. When I set out on this journey to become a better man, his book Wild at Heart was one of my go-to resources for an understanding of who I am as a man and how men show up in this world. At the time, I never thought I'd actually have the chance to have a conversation with him but after some back and forth and getting our schedules pinned down, we were finally able to lock something in.

John is an author, a counselor, and a teacher. He's been working with men and teaching them how to transform their lives for more than two decades. It's interesting to see that the book, Wild at Heart still strikes a nerve with men across the world more than 15 years after he wrote it. This is a testament to John's understanding of what we, as men, are really after in our lives and how to become the men we are meant to be.

Today, I want to talk about such an important topic and one which is easy to overlook simply because we’ve all heard about it so often. That said, I believe establishing a healthy morning routine is one of the most important things you can do during your day as it really establishes the benchmark, the framework, and the foundation for the way the rest of your day will go.

The reason that I think most people overlook (or can’t even stick to a morning routine) is because there’s so much advice about it already and we begin to believe that we have to pigeonhole ourselves into one way of doing it. Here’s what I’m here to tell you:  I’m going to share my morning routine. Now,  that doesn’t make it the morning routine. It simply means that it works for me. The most powerful thing if you can do with regards to your morning routine is to find something that works for you.

This is a process of experimentation. So, again, I’m going to share with you what works for me. If you like it, adopt it. If you don’t like it, don’t adopt it. If you like parts of it, adopt part of it. You get the idea.

What does it mean to be a complete beast? This is a question my guest, Jack Donovan, attempts to answer in his latest book, appropriately titled, A More Complete Beast. There is a reason the title is likely to resonate with you, as a man. Each of us understands that we are both man and beast.

Today we cover so much about the subject of masculinity including why being a man has to be an intentional choice, the power of what he calls the "conquering eye," how to avoid becoming a victim of victims, and how each and every one of us can become a more complete beast.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • What it means to become a more complete beast
  • Why you have to make an intentional choice to be a man
  • Why men are perceived as a threat to society
  • Why you should challenge yourself as a man
  • The four masculine tactical virtues - strength, courage, mastery, honor
  • Why some people try to redefine words to fit their narrative
  • The power of the "conquering eye"
  • Why it's important to define an honor code for yourself
  • Why you should care about some people's opinions
  • Avoiding become the victims of the victims
  • Sifting through the noise of others
  • Why there is no honor in being a victim, only in overcoming it
  • Why vulnerability is not as powerful as modern society would have you believe
  • Why masculinity is not a mask

JACK DONOVAN

Gentlemen, my guest today is a man a lot of you are familiar with and someone I've had on the podcast before.

His name is Jack Donovan and he is the author of several books on the subject of modernity and masculinity including The Way of Men, A Sky Without Eagles, Becoming a Barbarian, and his latest release, A More Complete Beast.

As you may know, Jack is a fascinating man and probably one you wouldn't expect to hear on this podcast (in fact, I made a joke about Jack, a pagan, and myself, a Mormon, walking into an ax-throwing bar just after this interview). That said, his views on the subject of manliness and masculinity, although controversial, resonate with so many of us because they're spot on and refreshing in a time when more and more of society has a hard time even discussing what it means to be a man.

At times, we tend to get into our own heads and become our own worst enemies. We often write off anyone who happens to disagree with us, puts us down in any way, and label them as "haters."

But it's our natural tendency - especially as high achieving men - to be our harshest critics. It's valuable at times and drives us to do great things and, other times, it creates unnecessary barriers to our success. My guest today, Gary John Bishop, author of Unfu*ck Yourself joins me to talk about how to redefine yourself by becoming unrealistic, how to uncover the narratives we tell ourselves, the difference between knowing something and being aware of something, and how to get out of your head and into your life.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • How to get out of your head
  • How to develop a no-nonsense approach to life
  • The critical difference between affirmations and personal assertions
  • Why self-help is inferior to self-development and growth
  • How to uncover the narratives you tell yourself
  • Understanding the study of Oncology and how it applies to your growth
  • The difference between being wrong and being inaccurate
  • How to become more present in your life
  • The power of telling yourself you're an asshole
  • Why we should not concern ourselves with the past and the future
  • The difference between knowing something and being aware of something
  • How to redefine yourself by being unrealistic
  • How to interrupt the notion of who you already are

GARY JOHN BISHOP

Gentlemen, my guest today is Gary John Bishop.

He is a personal development expert and the author of Unfu*ck Yourself - which is a book I just picked up to read a couple weeks ago.

In reading it, I can appreciate Gary's no-nonsense approach to human development, and high-powered mentoring. And, I knew right away I had to get him on the show.

He's worked with top athletes and Fortune 500 executives in his personal development career.

This guy is real. He's raw. He tells it like it is and pulls no punches which is exactly what we, as men, might just need in order to come to some realizations about our own lives, how to get out of our own heads, and out of our own way.

Rank #18: 179: How to Develop More Grit | Brian Call

Podcast cover
Read more

We live in a culture of ultimate softness but there seems to be a resurgence of men who understand the value of being tough, resilient, and gritty. These are the men I aspire to be more like because I understand how crucial it is, as Theodore Roosevelt states, to "keep the barbarian virtues."

Today, I am joined by my friend, Brian Call, AKA Gritty, to talk about how hunting and connecting with nature makes you tougher, why we need to learn from the men who have gone before, the role parents play in developing fortitude in their children, and how you can develop more grit.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

How to get started in bow hunting How hunting makes you tougher Developing discipline through hobbies The dangers of being disconnected from your food How the mass of our meat gets processed Why eating meat is not unethical How hunting creates a wide range of emotional sorrow and joy Why you need to learn from men who have gone before How to keep calm in a potentially dangerous situation The role parents play in developing grit in their children The danger of the "outrage society" in which we live Why it's not a good idea to search for "happiness" How to overcome fear and weakness through exposure How minimalism helps you become free

BRIAN CALL

Gentlemen, today I have the honor of introducing you to my friend, Brian Call.

He is an avid bow hunter and the founder and host of the Gritty Podcast where he talks all things bowhunting and developing more grit.

I've been following him and his work for quite some time now and I finally had the chance to connect with him in this candid interview. What really resonates with me about Brian is his willingness to share not only his victories but his setbacks and how he's managed to overcome them.

I hope you enjoy this powerful conversation with a man I really admire and respect.

Rank #19: Forging Mental Toughness | Ryan Lange

Podcast cover
Read more

We all know that we need to be mentally tough. There's no question of that. Yet, forging mental toughness seems to be one of the most elusive pursuits. All of us know how to develop physical toughness but rarely do we have any practices in place that will help us develop mental toughness.

My guest today, Ryan Lange, is one of the most mentally tough men I know. It's amazing considering he's only 21 years old. I won't get into all that he's accomplished just yet but please understand that the amount of physical strain he's put on his body is simply incredible. Today we talk about developing the capability to transcend pain, fostering the willingness to embrace hardship, why hard work is omnipotent, and how to forge more mental toughness.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS
  • Developing the capability to transcend pain
  • Developing a willingness to embrace the hardship
  • The critical importance of long-term focus
  • How to break those long-term goals into micro goals
  • The dangers of not developing mental toughness
  • How to effectively train the mind
  • Why hard work is omnipotent
  • How to maintain focus in a world of distraction
  • Our obligation as men to be mentally fit
  • Keeping yourself from wasting experiences
  • The power of linear progression
RYAN LANGE

Ryan Lange reached out a couple months ago and asked to come on the podcast.

Honestly, at first thought, I wasn't going to have him on because so many people talk about mental toughness. It's a little like saying you want to talk about leadership.

But then, I started looking into what this kid has done. And, I say kid because he's only 20 years old. Now, I realize he's a man (not a child) but I'm absolutely blown away with what he's done already.

He's completed 50K's, 50 milers, 100 milers, and at the end of last year completed a 238 mile race in Moab, UT. To give you an idea of what that means, it took roughly 86 hours for him to complete.

I'm incredibly inspired by Ryan and his approach to mental toughness. You will be too.

I had the privilege of attending their annual event, SummerStrong, and I can tell you that the culture they’ve created within the organization and movement is a sight to behold. And, because of that, I thought Bert and I needed to sit down for round 2 to talk about standing out. Enjoy.

MAINE EVENT

One of the most frequently asked questions I receive is something along the lines of “How do I get my life back on track?” I wish there was an easy answer. There isn’t. But, there is a simple one. It’s called the Battle Plan and it’s a system I’ve been developing over 10 years to take control of my health, relationships, bank account, this movement, and my life in general. If you’ve been listening to the podcast over the past month, you’ve heard me talk about the Order of Man Maine event (held August 10th-11th). Among the like-minded men you’ll meet, the challenges we’ll participate in, and the activities we have planned, you’ll be working on your own Battle Plan to accomplish more in the next 90 days than you potentially have all year. If you know you’re meant for more but haven’t found the systems and tools to maximize your potential, join us August 10th-11th in Maine for an event designed to give you the network and framework to take complete sovereignty over your life. Forging Noble Manhood | STEPHEN MANSFIELD

If you didn’t believe in the inherent value of masculinity, you wouldn’t be here listening to this podcast. But you are so I know that you believe in the message to reclaim and restore masculinity in a world that has been constantly distorting what it means to be a man, undermining the value men bring to society, and signing masculinity off as a socially constructed and antiquated behavior of men.

That’s why the conversation I have with repeat guest, Stephen Mansfield is so crucial. He has been championing noble manhood for years and I could not be more honored than to call him a friend. • The lore of manhood
  • The fire of God
  • Male authority

  • Virtues of a warrior

STEPHEN MANSFIELD

My guest today is my good friend and repeat guest, Stephen Mansfield. As I said previously, he has been a champion of noble manhood for years and has been a huge support and advocate for what we’re doing here at Order of Man. In fact, he was gracious enough to write a powerful testimony for my book, Sovereignty: The Battle for the Hearts and Minds of Men. Stephen is a political commentator, founder of Greatmen.tv, and New York Times Bestselling author and has written many incredible books including, Mansfield’s Book of Manly Men, Building Your Band of Brothers, and his latest (which he is here to talk with us about today), Men on Fire.

STEVEN PRESSFIELD | The War of Art

Podcast cover
Read more

The act of creation is something we have a desire to do but just because we desire to create doesn’t make it any easier. In fact, creating and putting your work into the world for others to judge is one of the most challenging things a human can do. There are a lot of reasons for this but ultimately it boils down to what my guest today calls, “resistance.” I’m honored to be joined by someone I’ve admired and respected for a very long time, Mr. Steven Pressfield, and today we talk about what “resistance” actually is and how it manifests itself differently in people’s lives. We also talk about the arrogance of planning, the culture of virtue, identifying the “soul’s code,” why work can be like war, and how to equip yourself for it.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • The voices in your head
  • Putting in the work
  • Improving over time
  • Making better mistakes
  • Working the problem
  • Defining professionalism
  • The amateur mindset
  • Going through a process
  • Finding your calling
  • Playing the long game
  • The artists' journey
  • Infallible wisdom
  • A culture of virtue

STEVEN PRESSFIELD

My guest today is the one and only Steven Pressfield.

Needless to say, many of you are already familiar with at least some of his work, including The War of Art, Do the Work, The Warrior Ethos, and Gates of Fire. But what a lot of you may not know is that Steven wrote for 27 years before his first novel, The Legend of Bagger Vance, was published. So, obviously, he knows a thing or two about putting in the work and overcoming resistance in all of its forms.

Since then, he’s gone on to sell millions of copies of his books and has become one of the most influential figures in fighting through challenging times, paying your dues, and teaching others how to succeed as creators. Gents, this one is such a powerful conversation. I hope you enjoy it. MAINE EVENT

Last week, I talked with you about the Legacy Event which is for fathers and sons but this week I wanted to share our next event, Maine Event, which will be held October 9th-11th with an exclusive Iron Council dinner the evening of the 8th. Over a period of two days, you’ll work alongside 100 other motivated, ambitious men to create a Battle Plan that will help you roll into 2021 in full stride and ready to seize all that the new year has to offer you. You’re going to get one-one coaching, group accountability, camaraderie, and the type of conversations and insights that most men just don’t get in their day-to-day activities.

It’s no secret that I’m a huge proponent of Jiu-Jitsu. In fact, I’m sure you guys get sick of me talking about it on the podcast so much. But I do because over the past year and a half, I’ve come to find immense value in the practice and seen the benefits (sometimes hidden) of what it offers. My guest today is someone who I’ve been following for quite some time. His name is Nick Albin “Chewy” and he’s a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blackbelt. He’s got an incredible YouTube channel (Chewjitsu) filled with ideas, strategies, insights, tactics, and mindsets for improving your game. And, he’s been indirectly instrumental in helping me improve my game as I dive deeper down the rabbit hole of something that has become a critical part of my week and life.

LEGACY

This message is for fathers with a son(s) between the ages of 8 -15. I know that Father’s Day is coming up this weekend and it’s likely that you’ll be getting an ugly tie and/or some homemade arts and crafts. So, if you’re looking to give your son(s) an experience they’ll never forget, consider joining us at our first-ever Legacy Experience in Maine. This is a 3 ½ day event designed to forge tighter bonds with you and your boy and give both him and you the tools, resources, frameworks, and mindset to thrive, as men, in challenging and uncertain times. Men in Politics | SEAN PARNELL

Podcast cover
Read more

Politics is just something we don’t talk a whole lot about in the Order of Man movement. I think it’s clear why. Masculinity isn’t reserved for one side of the political aisle but I do believe there are some underlying principles of masculinity (and the betterment of society) that tend to be politicized. And, so, I’ve rejected the notion of talking about politics or being even remotely political but it’s clear to me that these are conversations that need to be had. And, I can think of no better person to talk with us about it today than Sean Parnell, an Army Ranger veteran, New York Times Bestselling Author, and candidate for Congress. Today we talk about servant leadership, the American Dream, trust, power grabs, and men in politics.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • Being a warrior
  • Learning lessons
  • Servant leadership
  • Finding the right answer
  • Dirty politics
  • Raising campaign money
  • Voting in leaders
  • When tribalism wins
  • Cultural shifts
  • Political systems
  • Defending freedom
  • Coming home from war
  • Economic fallout
  • Common sense thinking
  • Personal responsibility
  • Showing gratitude
  • Delivering justice

SEAN PARNELL

My guest today is Sean Parnell. He served as an Army Ranger with the 10th Mountain Division. His platoon, nicknamed “Outlaw Platoon” killed over 350 enemy fighters in some of the biggest firefights in the Afghan war.

Upon returning to the states and after serious injuries (including neurological injuries), Sean was medically discharged from the military. He went on to write his New York Times Bestselling book, Outlaw Platoon, and is now a regular contributor on Fox as well as appearances on CNN, MSNBC, and many others.

He is also the co-founder of the American Warrior Initiative and has since thrown his hat in the ring of politics and is running for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 17th Congressional District.

The Path To Redemption | WES WATSON

Podcast cover
Read more

All of us have fallen behind or gotten off track somewhere in our lives (some more than others). Only some decide to get back on track and take control of their lives – to redeem themselves if you will. And, who doesn’t respect the hell out of a man who has hit rock bottom and risen from the ashes? That’s why I wanted to invite Wes Watson on the podcast. He’s arguably one of the most influential men I’ve had the honor of talking with because of his no-BS, straight-talking approach to improving your life. Today we talked about Wes’ 10-year prison sentence, the power of gratitude in dire circumstances, overcoming regret and shame, developing a new stream of consciousness, and how to build your own redemption story.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • Cognitive dissonance
  • Running from pain
  • Personal growth
  • External distractions
  • Levering emotional motivation
  • Giving yourself away
  • Bringing worth to life
  • Creating daily systems
  • Regret is your guideline
  • Shifting your mindset
  • Another chance at life
  • Sharing your F*ck-ups
  • Re-writing books
  • Managing negative energy
  • Positive mental attitude
  • Elevating yourself
  • Living out of an abundance

WES WATSON

My guest today is Wes Watson, strength and fitness coach, but he’s so much more than that. Wes simply uses health and fitness as a medium for transforming your mind and your life. Wes spent 10-years in prison and was quickly spiraling into a life of chaos and destruction but while serving his prison sentence, he began to transform his life through the power of his thoughts and daily actions. After being released from prison, Wes has become one of the most powerful voices in self-development, has built a massively successful business, and has inspired thousands of people to transform their own lives through his mentorship and coaching. You’re going to hear in this conversation why I wanted Wes to join us as the fire he brings can’t help but motivate and inspire you to get your life on track. IRON COUNCIL

Gents, we’re rapidly approaching father’s day and, as we do, it was important to me that inside of the Iron Council we have a discussion about redeeming the relationship with our fathers. Regardless of your relationship with your father, it’s likely that some conversations have been left unsaid and there is a strain between you and him. And, regardless of your ability/desire to reconcile with your father, there are steps you can take to come to terms with the relationship that you have with him so you can drive on in your own life with clarity, focus, direction, and purpose as a man.

These aren’t comfortable conversations, challenges, and discussions we’re having inside the Iron Council this month but they’re completely necessary if you want to break the chains that may have been holding you back from becoming the man you’re wanting to become – not the boy in his father’s shadow. If you’re ready to have these conversations, challenges, accountably, brotherhood, and more, join us at www.orderofman.com/ironcouncil.

Podcast cover
Read more

Gentlemen, my guest today is 4-time CrossFit Games Champion, Mat Fraser. I’ve always been fascinated with what makes some of the most successful men on the planet tick. That fascination became the foundation for this podcast and I can’t tell you how honored I am to have this man, Mat Fraser, - someone I’ve admired and respected for years - join us to talk about his unusual and extraordinary effort and work ethic. We talk about his background in Olympic Weightlifting, building self-sufficiency, the need for sacrifice and singular focus, how to establish your core values and rules for life, the power of obsession, and ultimately, his path to becoming the Fittest Man on Earth.

  • Risks in CrossFit
  • Hitting your goals
  • An Olympic hopeful
  • A level of sacrifice
  • Putting in the work
  • Keeping things simple
  • Finding satisfaction

MAT FRASER

My guest today is 4-time CrossFit Games Champion, Mat Fraser. In an ultra-competitive environment, he has found a way to apply himself and achieve insane amounts of work ethic and drive to become the best in his field – for years!

He comes from an Olympic Weightlifting background had planned on going that route until he suffered a back injury in 2009 before shifting his focus to CrossFit. Most of you are probably familiar to some degree with Mat and I’ve been following him for years now but I was surprised at his level of humility. In fact, he’s probably one of the most down-to-earth men I’ve had on this podcast in spite of his tremendous level of success and accomplishment. I hope that you enjoy listening to our conversation as much as I enjoyed having it. IRON COUNCIL.

Gentlemen, I know that last week I told you about this month’s topic inside the Iron Council but I thought I’d bring it up again because, after the first week of our discussions and challenges, it is apparent how important the relationship is between a man and his father. And, it’s apparent that many of us men have estranged relationships with our dad. This is unfortunate since most of us have learned (for better or worse) how to show up as a man from our fathers. When you band with us in the Iron Council, you’ll be able to join in on these powerful conversations and participate in the challenges designed to push you into the deep end of your past, your potential, and the narratives you consciously or subconsciously lived your life by.

If you’re ready to make a change and step into the man you’re capable of becoming, join us at www.orderofman.com/ironcouncil.
