DAVID GOGGINS | Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds

Podcast cover
Read more

The mind is a powerful thing. It can be used as a tremendous source of good or a tremendous source of destruction in your life. The way you choose to train and use it could, quite literally, be the only thing keeping you from accomplishing your greatest ambitions.

Today, I am joined by former Navy SEAL, ultrarunner, endurance athlete, wildland firefighter, and all-around badass, David Goggins. We talk about starring down adversity, using challenges as the fuel to propel yourself forward, the sacrifices you'll need to make to be successful, race issues and political correctness in America, and how you can master your mind and defy the odds.

DAVID GOGGINS

The man I have the privilege of introducing you to today, David Goggins, truly needs to no introduction.

Suffice it to say, David is one of the most insane human beings on the planet and someone I have respected and extremely inspired by over the past couple of years.

We've all watched his videos and most of us have read or listened to his latest book but having the opportunity to sit down face to face with him only increased my level of respect for what David has gone through, the odds he's overcome, and the incredible work he's been able to accomplish despite those odds being stacked against him.

Gentlemen, set this one on repeat as David and I have one of the most powerful conversations I've ever been part of.

He's written for our site before and one of his articles happens to be one of the most controversial of ours to date as he covers a topic that a lot of men aren't comfortable in discussing and one that remains very polarizing to a lot of men.

KYLE CARPENTER

Gentlemen, today I have the honor of introducing you to my friend and the youngest ever living Medal of Honor recipient, Kyle Carpenter.

Kyle joined the Marine Corps at 19 and not long after was deployed with the 1st Marine Division to Afghanistan where he threw himself on a grenade to save a fellow Marine. This man is one of the most humble people that I know and I’m inspired by his experience, his life, and who is he as a human being. Before we get into the conversation, I’m going to read you his Medal of Honor Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as an Automatic Rifleman with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 1, 1st Marine Division (Forward), I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom on 21 November 2010. Lance Corporal Carpenter was a member of a platoon-sized coalition force, comprised of two reinforced Marine rifle squads partnered with an Afghan National Army squad. The platoon had established Patrol Base Dakota two days earlier in a small village in the Marjah District in order to disrupt enemy activity and provide security for the local Afghan population. Lance Corporal Carpenter and a fellow Marine were manning a rooftop security position on the perimeter of Patrol Base Dakota when the enemy initiated a daylight attack with hand grenades, one of which landed inside their sandbagged position. Without hesitation and with complete disregard for his own safety, Lance Corporal Carpenter moved toward the grenade in an attempt to shield his fellow Marine from the deadly blast. When the grenade detonated, his body absorbed the brunt of the blast, severely wounding him, but saving the life of his fellow Marine. By his undaunted courage, bold fighting spirit, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of almost certain death, Lance Corporal Carpenter reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

"Deep in his heart every man longs for a battle to fight, an adventure to live, and a beauty to rescue." This is one of my favorite quotes about masculinity and, if you've been following us for long, you've heard it from me a thousand times.

  • The masculine virtues

JOHN ELDREDGE

I am honored to introduce you to my guest today, Mr. John Eldredge. When I set out on this journey to become a better man, his book Wild at Heart was one of my go-to resources for an understanding of who I am as a man and how men show up in this world. At the time, I never thought I'd actually have the chance to have a conversation with him but after some back and forth and getting our schedules pinned down, we were finally able to lock something in.

John is an author, a counselor, and a teacher. He's been working with men and teaching them how to transform their lives for more than two decades. It's interesting to see that the book, Wild at Heart still strikes a nerve with men across the world more than 15 years after he wrote it. This is a testament to John's understanding of what we, as men, are really after in our lives and how to become the men we are meant to be.

At times, we tend to get into our own heads and become our own worst enemies. We often write off anyone who happens to disagree with us, puts us down in any way, and label them as "haters."

But it's our natural tendency - especially as high achieving men - to be our harshest critics. It's valuable at times and drives us to do great things and, other times, it creates unnecessary barriers to our success. My guest today, Gary John Bishop, author of Unfu*ck Yourself joins me to talk about how to redefine yourself by becoming unrealistic, how to uncover the narratives we tell ourselves, the difference between knowing something and being aware of something, and how to get out of your head and into your life.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • How to get out of your head
  • How to develop a no-nonsense approach to life
  • The critical difference between affirmations and personal assertions
  • Why self-help is inferior to self-development and growth
  • How to uncover the narratives you tell yourself
  • Understanding the study of Oncology and how it applies to your growth
  • The difference between being wrong and being inaccurate
  • How to become more present in your life
  • The power of telling yourself you're an asshole
  • Why we should not concern ourselves with the past and the future
  • The difference between knowing something and being aware of something
  • How to redefine yourself by being unrealistic
  • How to interrupt the notion of who you already are

GARY JOHN BISHOP

Gentlemen, my guest today is Gary John Bishop.

He is a personal development expert and the author of Unfu*ck Yourself - which is a book I just picked up to read a couple weeks ago.

In reading it, I can appreciate Gary's no-nonsense approach to human development, and high-powered mentoring. And, I knew right away I had to get him on the show.

He's worked with top athletes and Fortune 500 executives in his personal development career.

This guy is real. He's raw. He tells it like it is and pulls no punches which is exactly what we, as men, might just need in order to come to some realizations about our own lives, how to get out of our own heads, and out of our own way.

How to Stand Out as a Man Among Men | BERT SORIN

Podcast cover
Read more

It comes as no surprise that most men have a desire to stand out from the pack as a man of credibility and authority. I call it influence and, the more of it you have with others, the more effective and successful you will be in your life.

Today, I am joined by my friend, Bert Sorin, to talk about how to stand out as the man. He’s a man I’ve respected immensely since I met him a little over a year ago and someone who stands out as the type of man I’m referring. We get into the “x-factor,” adding value in all of your interactions, matching your actions with your words, and how to stand out as a man among men.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • Defining the X-Factor
  • Finding relevance
  • Adding value to your tribe
  • Developing social skills
  • Having the right motives
  • Protecting your “magic”
  • Letting go of expectations
  • Watching the tide come in
  • Scaling forward
  • Your value proposition
  • Dissociating from your activities
  • Building your fortress
  • Playing to win

BERT SORIN

Gents, today I am joined by repeat guest and friend, Bert Sorin.Bert is the President and CEO of Sorinex. I know you’ve been hearing me talk about them for some time now since I was introduced to him and Sorinex about this time last year.Bert is a former Division 1 Track and Field All-American and an Olympics Trial athlete. And, what he learned in sports, he has now translated to running this incredible leader in strength and exercise equipment. And, it’s not only about their equipment. I had the privilege of attending their annual event, SummerStrong, and I can tell you that the culture they’ve created within the organization and movement is a sight to behold. And, because of that, I thought Bert and I needed to sit down for round 2 to talk about standing out. Enjoy.

MAINE EVENT

One of the most frequently asked questions I receive is something along the lines of “How do I get my life back on track?” I wish there was an easy answer. There isn’t. But, there is a simple one. It’s called the Battle Plan and it’s a system I’ve been developing over 10 years to take control of my health, relationships, bank account, this movement, and my life in general. If you’ve been listening to the podcast over the past month, you’ve heard me talk about the Order of Man Maine event (held August 10th-11th). Among the like-minded men you’ll meet, the challenges we’ll participate in, and the activities we have planned, you’ll be working on your own Battle Plan to accomplish more in the next 90 days than you potentially have all year. If you know you’re meant for more but haven’t found the systems and tools to maximize your potential, join us August 10th-11th in Maine for an event designed to give you the network and framework to take complete sovereignty over your life. Gentlemen, I'm stoked to introduce you to my guest today, Mr. Josiah Novak.

I met Josiah through a mutual friend a little over a year ago and through getting to know him over the past year, I can tell you he is the real deal.

I think it's easy for us to assume that these fitness guys have always had the perfect physique but what I admire about Josiah is that he has gone through his own transformation of losing over 80lbs and is now dedicated to helping men around the world do the same in their lives.

Today, I am joined by my friend, Brian Call, AKA Gritty, to talk about how hunting and connecting with nature makes you tougher, why we need to learn from the men who have gone before, the role parents play in developing fortitude in their children, and how you can develop more grit.

BRIAN CALL

Gentlemen, today I have the honor of introducing you to my friend, Brian Call.

He is an avid bow hunter and the founder and host of the Gritty Podcast where he talks all things bowhunting and developing more grit.

I've been following him and his work for quite some time now and I finally had the chance to connect with him in this candid interview. What really resonates with me about Brian is his willingness to share not only his victories but his setbacks and how he's managed to overcome them.

I hope you enjoy this powerful conversation with a man I really admire and respect.

His story, along with his five surviving annex security team members, is told in the book “13 Hours” written by Mitchell Zuckoff. When you hear the words, "Benghazi, Libya" you might think of that book, and subsequent movie, 13 hours. You might think of the terrorist attack, the death of a US Ambassador Stevens, and the coverup that followed. How Not to Think Like a Loser | SCOTT ADAMS

Podcast cover
Read more

Social media is a powerful tool. If it weren’t for the good social media has done, you likely wouldn’t be tuned into this podcast right now. That said, it seems to me that the use of social media is making us dumber or, at least, encouraging us to behave that way. My guest today, Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert, joins me to talk about exactly why that is and the type of thinking he refers to as “Loserthink.” It’s also the title of his new book subtitled, How Untrained Brains are Ruining America. Today, we talk about the fact that being right and being wrong feel the same, how to determine what battles to fight online, how shaming and mockery can be used positively, and ultimately how you can avoid thinking like a loser.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • Augmenting your intelligence
  • Wrestling with social media
  • A “slippery slope”
  • Linear thinking
  • Predictable variables to success
  • Influencing other people
  • Enlightened selfishness
  • Succeeding at systems
  • Mental addiction
  • Adding to your talent stack
  • There’s always a deeper level
  • Engaging in “loser think”
  • Determining a stranger’s thoughts

SCOTT ADAMS

Gents, I am stoked to be able to introduce you to my guest today, Scott Adams. Before I do, I want to make sure I thank my friend, Jordan Harbinger, for introducing us. You may not know who Scott is right away but I’m sure you know Dilbert. Scott is the creator of Dilbert and the bestselling author of Win Bigly and his new book, Loserthink.

Although Scott really started to gain attention and traction with Dilbert, his political commentary is, in my mind, just as, if not more, important. If you’re interested, you can check out what he has to say on Twitter (@scottadamssays). He’s never been afraid to ruffle a few feathers and I think that is why he has gained such a following – his ability to say what needs to be said and his ability to say it in a way that connects with so many of us.

SYSTEMS AND PROCESSES

Gentlemen, we’re all aware of how important systems and processes are on our path to success but how many men have not created those systems in every facet of their lives. These are the same men who often wonder why that cannot seem to get ahead. This month, inside the Iron Council, we’ll be exploring and deep-diving into the systems and processes I use and what the 500+ members are using to achieve maximum results. We’ll help you unpackage your systems, explore what’s working, remove what isn’t, and rebuild a strategy that will ensure your success.

If you’d like to know more and build your blueprint for success, band with us inside the Iron Council. You’ll get the tools, challenges, assignments, camaraderie, and brotherhood needed to thrive. Again, join us at www.orderofman.com/ironcouncil.

  • Creating space and margin
  • Separating from your environment

  • Counterproductive people
  • Forming the world around you

CHRIS DUFFIN

My guest today is a man who, for many of you listening, needs no introduction. He’s been on the podcast before – roughly three years ago. But with his new book coming out, The Eagle and the Dragon, Chris and I thought it would be good to sit down for a revisit. He’s one of the strongest men on the planet but he’s also an incredible thinker and in his new book, he illustrates his, interesting childhood and how he raised himself from those conditions to be successful as a businessman, family man, and strong man. I can’t wait to share this one with you today.

LEGACY

A couple of years ago, I recognized a need to give men the tools and resources they needed to secure their legacy in their sons. With so much misinformation in the world about how to raise our boys, it’s critical that we, as fathers, do the best job possible for the challenges they’re likely to face. That’s why we started Legacy, a powerful 3 ½ day event for you and your son between the ages of 8 -15. During the course of this incredible experience, both you and your son will be tested physically, mentally, and emotionally. And you’ll both be equipped with the tools needed for your boy to transition to a self-sufficient man in a society that, frankly, doesn’t want him to. And, you’ll forge deeper bonds through a series of events and experiences unlike any other. JASON REDMAN

Gentlemen, I’m honored to introduce you to my guest today, former Navy SEAL and friend Jason Redman.

He spent 11 years as a Navy SEAL and was badly wounded on the battlefield in Iraq where he earned the Bronze Star Medal with Valor, Navy Commendation Medal, and Purple Heart among other medals and acknowledgments. After retiring from the military in 2013 he went on to found a non-profit called Wounded Wear which provides tailored clothing for wounded warriors. And, in addition to that, he’s written several books about his experience in combat as a leader on the battlefield and is a New York Times Bestselling Author. Today, he is here to share his lessons from battle.

LEGACY

I’ve got to a point in my life (especially since I’m a father) that what will remain long after I’m gone has become important to me. And, I’m sure if you’re a father, you feel the same way.

And, as a father, the lessons and experiences you share with your son are critically important to you. That is why we started the Legacy Experience. It’s a 3 ½ day event in Maine designed to give you the tools, framework, and guide to usher your son into manhood.

In the face of society’s confusion about masculinity and manliness, it’s critical that we, as our son’s fathers, teach them the truth about the path from boy to man. Over the course of 3 days, you and your son will be tested physically, mentally, and emotionally and given the opportunity to forge deeper bonds between you and him. We Don’t Rise to the Level of our Expectations, We Fall to the Level of our Training | JAMES YEAGER

Podcast cover
Read more

Keeping yourself and others safe and secure is a huge part of what it means to be a man. It falls under the “Protection” trifecta of our role and responsibilities as men. That’s the reason having conversations like I do today with James Yeager is so crucial. It seems to me too many men believe we’ll naturally rise to the situation when it is demanded from us. But without the proper training, we’re likely to find ourselves wanting and in dangerous situations and encounters. We’d all do well to remember that we don’t rise to the level of our expectations, we fall to the level of our training.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • Planning for the unexpected
  • A lack of motivation
  • Walking with purpose
  • Mastering the sword
  • Yin & Yang of man
  • Using guns to save
  • How to avoid being “picked”
  • Passing the smell test
  • Natural point-of-aim
  • Knowing what to look for
  • Gear vs. Skill
  • Dealing with intimidation
  • Systems & procedures

JAMES YEAGER

Gentlemen, I’m so honored to be able to introduce you to James Yeager. This is a fascinating man and someone who is uniquely and extremely competent and qualified to talk about keeping yourself and others safe and secure.

He is the CEO of Tactical Response, a tactical training company and his resume consists of two protective security details to Iraq, Chief of Police, K-9 handler, Deputy Sheriff, SWAT leader, Firearms instructor, and VP of a multi-million dollar tactical gear company.I could go on and on but suffice it to say that there aren’t many, if any, more qualified individuals to talk with us about turning ourselves into the protectors our families and communities need us to be.

IRON COUNCIL

Over the past 5 years, I’ve really considered what it is a lot of men are missing and what I’ve seen in a lot of men is a lack of brotherhood. Most men seem to be going at life alone. We’ve all head the idea of the lone wolf and while I can understand that a man has to learn to make it on his own, having men who have my back, call me on my B.S., and support me has proven to be some of the most valuable relationships I’ve created. But doing that can be difficult with a demanding schedule and a lack of men who want to grow and evolve the same way you do. And that is the exact reason we created the Iron Council. It’s a band of brothers (500+ of us) who have voluntarily decided that banding together is more powerful than going at it alone. Each week, we host calls and discussions, check-in for accountability, challenge ourselves to push outside of our comfort zones, call each other out, support, edify, and uplift. And, if you feel that might be of value to you in your life, we’d be honored to have you see if there is a fit for both us and you. Securing Our Nation’s Borders | JASON OWENS

Podcast cover
Read more

A nation that has no borders ceases to be a nation. This is why it’s critical that we find realistic and effective solutions to secure this nation’s borders. And, while there are many polarizing thoughts on the subject, it’s also critical that we have discussions about this pressing issue.

That’s why, when I had the opportunity to spend a couple of days with Jason Owens, Chief Patrol Agent of the Houlton Sector (all of Maine), and his team, I jumped at the chance to learn more about what these men and women do and clear up misconceptions about their role and responsibilities. Today, we talk about those misconceptions, the threats our nation faces, how best to go about securing the resources to protect against those threats, and the brave men and women who do the work of securing our nation’s borders.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • The common denominator
  • Becoming well-rounded
  • Different ways of doing business
  • Needing more resources
  • The border crisis
  • Protect your freedom
  • Presenting the facts
  • Relying on community
  • Crisis on the border
  • Finding a port of entry
  • Exploiting loopholes
  • The responsibility of public servants
  • Presenting objective facts
  • Subject Matter Expertise
  • Leaving a legacy behind

JASON OWENS

As I mentioned earlier, today I have the opportunity to sit down with the Chief Patrol Agent of the Houlton Sector (which is essentially all of Maine). He has over 20 years of experience under his belt and formerly served as Deputy Chief Patrol Agent of the Laredo Sector directing operation along the U.S/Mexico border.

He has completed both the Border Patrol Tactical Unit Selection Course and Border Patrol Search, Trauma, and Rescue Team Selection Course. He’s served in Texas, D.C., Honduras, Columbia, Iraq, and the Dominican Republic among other operations. I cannot imagine a more qualified man to talk about the unique and challenging work of protecting this nation’s borders.
