I'm at the age where a lot of my friends seem to be in a phase of "float" and don't know what to do with their lives. I suppose because I seem to have my act together, I'm constantly bombarded with requests for advice on what they can do to get "unstuck." I learned long ago to recommend books or classes to put the ball back in their court to take responsibility, but frankly, when someone is deeply stuck, they need something short and actionable... so now I simply recommend this podcast. James covers a lot of ground in only a few minutes a day... listen for a week and you'll get a great variety of advice on different topics. This is a podcast I can count on for a positive stream of information, and I highly recommend to anyone who wants to move their life forward.

Alan wants to know why I leas my car instead of buying it.
I'm  a bit conflicted about which is better – buying or leasing.
Today a car is really a computer with a bunch of metal wrapped around it. With technology moving so quickly, I don't want to be tied down to old technology.
I'd rather trade up every three years.
Plus, Claudia has a great idea for new car technology. Here's a hint... think about a wet dog.

Do you feel anxious when you're not working, or not studying?
Anxiety is built into all of us. It's in our DNA. We had to be anxious or we'd be eaten.
When you feel anxious, think about it, realize it, notice it and relax.
Most anxiety is pretty useless. It zaps energy from you and doesn't solve anything.

Rank #7: Ep 280: Want to be Smarter, Read Fiction

Podcast cover
Read more
"Ocean's 13" and "Rounders" writer Brian Koppelman talks with James today about why reading fiction is so valuable.
No matter what field you're in there's tremendous benefit to reading fiction as part of the diet of what you read.
Brian says, fiction forces your analytical mind to take a back seat for a moment and knocks you out of you comfort. It forces you to grapple with those things that you often shut out.
Reading fiction is not a test; you're not in an English class
No one is going to quiz you on what you read, no one is going to call you an idiot if you don't get it, or don't like it.
Fiction may not immediately improve your life. It's not as direct as most non-fiction books but...
The lessons you pull from the fiction that hits you the hardest are the lessons that stay with you the longest.

David Newman

Today's question comes from a listener who wants to know, "Should I quit my job and open a yoga studio?"
James says, "If you're leaving your job, don't start a yoga studio."
The goal to choosing yourself is to make money while you sleep.
The problem with quitting your job and opening a yoga studio is you always have to be there to make any money.
The best case is it's a lifestyle business. You're doing this because you love it and just have to do it, but test your idea first.
Try adding in clothing, food, and equipment.
Make it a destination.

We're lucky... We're living at a very special time in history. Startup companies have so much cash that if you're smart, you can legally grab a bunch of it.
Greg Muender did. He became a part-time Uber and Lyft driver to help put his wife through medical school.
He was doing OK, making decent money, but suddenly an idea struck him. Why not write about his experiences and post it to Medium, a new blogging website?
He added a few affiliate links at the bottom and BOOM the cash started rolling in. He was making more money writing about Lyft and Uber than he was driving for them.
And that was just the beginning.

Rank #17: Ep 269 James' Secret to Writing

Podcast cover
Read more
To write well, you need to continually exercise your brain muscle.
As James says, one of the best books on writing is Stephen King's book, On Writing.
King says that after a bad bicycle accident, he stopped writing for a few weeks while he healed. When he got back to it, he couldn't write. He couldn't quite connect the words.
James writes seven days a week and he tries to do it at his peak productivity time.
When Dan Ariely was on The James Altucher Podcast earlier this year, he explained that two to four hours after you wake up are your peak hours.
So if you want to be a better writer, then this is probably the best time for you to sit down and write.
James wakes up about 6:00 a.m. and spends a few minutes every day "meditating." He then reads for about two hours and makes sure to read some fiction.
Then it's on to writing.
If you want to improve your writing skills, write every day and give yourself permission to publish something that is not great.
Regards,
David Newman
