Ep. 70: Resolutions Series: Lacy Young on Health and Wellness

Podcast cover
Read more

Welcome to 2016! This year, I'm starting off with a new series on Raise Your Hand Say Yes all about New Year's Resolutions. Do you start every year thinking you're going to deal with your health and money and (finally!) clean out your closet? If so, you're in for a treat this month! And if not, you're still in for a treat because these upcoming episodes are gooooood!

This week, I got to sit down with one of my favorite people on the planet, Lacy Young  and talk all about health and wellness and what to do if you want to be healthier. Lacy's advice is spot on while also being super reasonable and I know you'll be able to walk away from this conversation with at least a couple of things you can start doing today to get healthier and feel better in your body.

We also talk about how you can tell the difference between what you really want for your body versus what the magazines say you should want, the value of putting yourself in the way of empowerment, and a beginner's guide to meditating. Lacy also shares what she experienced in the beginning of her own journey to get healthy, and I'm sure we can all relate. Be warned: by listening to this episode, all of your excuses about why you can't eat better or meditate will go out the window!

What do moving to San Francisco (without my boyfriend at the time), coming off of maternity leave, and quitting drinking have in common? They were all major turning points in my life.

In this week's episode, I'm taking you behind the scenes of these three huge transitions in my life and sharing everything I've learned in the process of making my way through them, including how I now face those "things have to change!" whispers now.

If you're in the midst of a transition, this episode is for you. If you're about to be in the midst of a transition, this episode is for you. And if you too have survived challenging transitions in your life, I've got you covered as well. Big BIG love.

I am so excited to have author and illustrator Ann Shen back on the podcast for the third time. On the surface, our conversation is about routines—how to find them, how to keep them, and how to stay committed to them.

But once we dug deeper, I realized that this conversation was actually about how to find practices that help you release anxiety and then how to allow those practices to be a priority for you in your life. Without apologizing for what you need and who you are.

Oh, right. That apologizing piece is huge, isn't it? Enjoy, enjoy and if you have any thoughts on routines and rituals, I'd love to hear them!

I loved talking with Natalie Lue this week and we covered so much ground in this episode, including: habits (and relationships!) that aren't serving you, how to step beyond those well-worn patterns, drama and our addiction to it, and how people-pleasing is actually a manipulation (SAY WHAT?!).

We also covered identities that don't serve us, letting other people dim our light, and why having emotional baggage doesn't mean anything other than that we're human.

Natalie blew my mind in this episode and I think you'll love it!

In a world full of people telling us how they can revolutionize our businesses and that we need to leap and hope with all we have that our nets will appear, how can we be so sure that the move we're going to make is The Right One?

This week, I'm taking you through my journey (starting Freshman year in college) of so many Raise Your Hand Say Yes career moves that eventually got me to the place of starting my coaching practice, going full time, and starting this podcast.

There are twists. And turns. And backtracks. And pivots. As is to be expected by life. But, there was also so much learning - which I'll share as well.

Fear. It's real and sometimes it's loud. But what about those times it's *not* so loud? And what about those times that fear is in control of our actions and we don't even realize it?

That's what I'm talking about this week - all those sneaky ways fear shows up and holds us back from making the moves we really want to be making in our lives and in our work. Ah! Season 4 is here! I'm thrilled to be kicking us off with an interview with Laurie Wagner, an author and artist who also happens to be my writing teacher! Through her amazing Wild Writing method, Laurie helps writers tap into their truth and get to the heart of what they really want to say in this world. (Which is pretty much step one of living your Raise Your Hand Say Yes life!)

In this conversation, Laurie and I talk about telling the truth and what it has to do with leadership. You'll also hear her thoughts on getting vulnerable as an expert and teacher and why it's so critical. Oh, and we also dive into a discussion about drinking (and not drinking) and Jesus - and how interesting it is that both topics feel so controversial.

If you're interested in finding your voice and tapping into a deeper spiritual truth, this episode is for you!

You guys. I adore Laura Simms! This interview was so fun to do because 1. Laura is my friend and 2. She is so smart!

While I thought Laura and I would talk a lot about the hustle of being a new mom and an entrepreneur, our conversation quickly took a turn towards being about finding your purpose, appropriate because Laura helps people discover their purpose-driven careers as a career coach. We also talk about letting go of what other people are thinking, letting go of needing a "label" for yourself, and committing to something for the sake of learning.

Laura, you're the best! It was such a treat having you on the show! Thank you!!

PS. At the beginning of this episode, I also introduce something I’m super excited about: the Raise your Hand Say Yes book club. We’re starting with The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks. Get your copy now and give it a read – the episode where we discuss it will air on March 4!

I'm excited to unveil a new feature called My RYHSY Life. In these monthly-ish episodes, I'll be going behind the scenes of my own life and business to tell the in-real-time story of what I'm currently raising my hand and saying yes to.

I'm kicking the series off with the story of how and why I decided to give up drinking a couple of months ago, in what is becoming a permanent change in my life. I'll be sharing what led me to make the decision to dive into the dry life, what I kept telling myself about why I couldn't do so sooner, and what I've learned about myself, my relationship with alcohol, and my life since.

You'll also learn about the conversation I was afraid to have with my husband after I quit and the times I've been triggered to drink since. And not sure how my giving up drinking pertains to you and your creative quests? I'll fill you in on that too!

Welcome to the newest addition to the RYHSY family: the Friday Quickie!

Each week, I'll be releasing a short solo episode on Friday where I introduce (or dive deeper on!) a single seed of a topic for you to consider.

This week's episode focuses on one single word: yet. You'll hear about why I think that we're often our own worst enemy when it comes to living our lives and how this word might just change everything!

Let's talk money honey! (And also: yes! It's uncomfortable! But let's talk about it anyway!)

This week, I'm joined by business coach Lena West to dive straight into the most-uncomfortable parts of the money conversation, including: why we show up the way we do around money, what's beyond the "charge what you're worth" mantra, how to deal with money discomfort (and why it probably won't go away!), why striving to just be nice is bullshit, what happens when the people in your life aren't supportive of your endeavors, how to know what to charge, and SO MUCH MORE!

Really. Lena is all heart and no bullshit and will shake up your beliefs around money in the best way! Enjoy, enjoy!

Ep. 265: The things we forget.

This week, let's talk about all of the things we're likely to forget as we navigate the day-to-day operations of our lives.

Things like: + You don't have to live in "I don't know" land forever+ That you don't have to go it alone when it comes to changing your life, and...+ That familiar and comfortable might not actually be your true goals

If you are longing for a change but aren't sure what that change will be or if you'll be able to keep up your enthusiasm or if what you want is "the right thing" to want, this episode is for you!

Also, if you've been thinking about applying for my RYHSY Inner Circle and are on the fence, I've got you covered!

We often talk about the benefits of going after the life you want, but we hardly talk about the cost of *not* doing so. This week, I'm pulling back the curtain on what I see so many of us doing as we avoid the perceived disruption that comes with becoming the person we know we want to be!

I'll also be sharing some insight into my Raise Your Hand Say Yes Inner Circle (applications are now open!) and covering some things you might be thinking about the financial and time investment! Enjoy, enjoy!

Ep. 263: Brooke Monaghan on Starting without Hustle and Biz Development via Spiritual Growth

Podcast cover
Read more

We often hear advice, in hindsight, from people who've been living their dreams. But what about people who are just starting out? Is it possible to move towards your goals in a sane way in the beginning of an endeavor?

This week, I'm talking with fresh-out-of-her-day-job systems coach Brooke Monaghan about just that. You'll hear about why Brooke ran away from her dreams for 15 years (!), what her turning point was, the counterintuitive thing she did to prepare to go full time, and what happened when she was finally free of that day job!

You'll also hear about Brooke's experience in my RYHSY Inner Circle and why what she most needed to learn was what she was least expecting. I loved our conversation SO MUCH!! Enjoy, enjoy!!

Ep. 262: Impulse vs. Fact, or How to Stay Committed and Keep Going

Podcast cover
Read more

The big question we're tackling this week is this: how do you proceed towards the life you want to live when your pesky brain keeps getting in the way with the fear and the doubt and those sneaky impulses?

(Related: how do you get yourself to do the things that matter most to you when, in the moment, you just don't want to!?)

(Also related: if you experience this, YOU ARE NOT ALONE.) Dig into this week's episode to hear about why I want you to ignore your brain and what to focus on instead!!
