   iTunes  Spotify  Youtube Patreon   In the fall of 2000, while working for Akamai Technologies in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Derek was introduced to the practice of yoga by a few of his sales colleagues who were heading out to a Bikram studio near Boston University. “Eat a light lunch” was the only thing he knew about what awaited him that afternoon, and while that first experience didn’t change him overnight, it became a door into a practice that has challenged and changed his perception of what the mind and the body can do and the impact yoga can make on lives.  Derek is an experienced sales, marketing, and business development executive with over two decades working with world-leading brands in the media, technology, advertising and cannabis industries. He has led teams at global media &amp; entertainment companies, consumer brands, technology startups, and non-profit organizations.  Derek holds a BA from Hobart &amp; William Smith Colleges and an MBA from the Olin School of Business at Babson College. As a monitor engineer with Maryland Sound International, he toured with artists like Tears for Fears, Don Henley, Disturbed, Josh Groban, Anthony Hamilton and more. Chris is currently the Director of Technical Operations at IMS Technology Services. Previously he spent ten years as the Director of Audio overseeing and managing all aspects of audio for the Event Staging Division of the company. IMS is a full-scale production company providing audio, video, and lighting for special events, conferences, and conventions nationwide. A highlight while at IMS includes designing and mixing for the Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl victory parade, with an estimated 800,000 + audience and the largest outdoor event in Philadelphia’s history. He has also worked on the last four Presidential Inaugurations. Chris is a co-host on the Signal To Noise Podcast presented by ProSoundWeb. The podcast has over 100 episodes and has been downloaded over 190,000 times. Joel Miller (AKA Joel Roadie, AKA Rifken) was born in Cambridge, England. His parents emigrated to Los Angeles when he was a child, and he grew up in Southern California.  He is the oldest of three children. When he was four years old, Miller's mother was stopped in a shopping mall by talent agent Dorothy Day Otis. Soon after he began working as a child actor and model.  One such fun ad campaign featured Miller as one of the young faces for Borax Soap - alongside Tony Randall and an also very young Jaleel White (Steve Urkel.) In August 2020, Miller released his autobiography, Memoir of a Roadie: Axl Said I Made a Great Cup of Tea, Scott Weiland Liked the Carpenters, &amp; Ozzy Drinks Rosé.  The book is an intimate behind the scenes look at the music industry from a young roadie’s perspective.  Miller toured under the employment of Stone Temple Pilots, Guns N' Roses, Poison, and the Cranberries. It's no secret that for years the "road" has been a male-dominated workplace. However, that's quickly changing, and women like Rachel Ryan are forging new and indelible paths, demonstrating their might and talent, making way for a new generation of roadies. Mr. Soundlady, as Rachel is otherwise known, is a force to be reckoned with. As I dug around researching women in the audio field, her name kept popping up, and I couldn't help but be struck by her enthusiasm, her passion, and judging by her resume, her talent. An NYU graduate from California, Rachel has already logged an impressive amount of experience. She had the good fortune to have residencies at both the East and West coast Knitting Factories, Brooklyn Bowl, and has been on the road as both FOH engineer and monitor mixer for the likes of The Tallest Man On Earth, The Strokes, PHOX, Silversun Pickups, and is still the first and only woman to intern at Radio City Music Hall. In between the endless hours and concert halls Rachel has decided to go back to Graduate school to study Library Sciences. Badass indeed.

The trust between an artist and his or her crew is something that takes time to build. It’s a sacred thing. Bobby Tis, guitar tech and monitor engineer for the Tedeschi Trucks Band, has fostered that trust for close to 10 years. I spent an evening with Bobby at a recent gig in Simsbury, CT, and the level of camaraderie and closeness amongst the band and crew was certainly palpable. Bobby learned his craft from a long list mentors including his father Bobby Tis, Sr., well respected amongst studio engineers, and Brian Farmer, longtime guitar tech for Warren Haynes. Bobby’s love of what he does day in and day out keeps him going whether he’s on tour or engineering a session at Swamp Raga studios, Derek and Susan’s home studio in Florida, where Tis lives with his family, just down the road.

I've used the word passion many times to describe several of my previous guests. Some are passionate about their careers, others about their instruments, and still others care deeply about doing the best that they can at any given moment to achieve the absolute best outcome. Production Manager &amp; Front of House Engineer Brian Speiser fits most comfortably in this last category. A long-time member of the Tedeschi Trucks Band family, Speiser's passion lies in his quest for every audience member to leave a performance having had the ultimate audio experience night after night, show after show. I caught-up with Brian during some rare downtime at his apartment in Queens, where we discussed his love of all things analog, the balancing act of wearing multiple hats on tour, and how he's maintained such long-running relationships with the many artists on his resume.

It was at a Supertramp concert when he was 13 years old where Robert Scovill got his first glimpse of a FOH soundboard, and since that day, he’s followed his insatiable passion for live music all the way the top of his field. Known and well-respected by many of his peers, Robert has been mixing sound for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for an incredible 23 years. Prior to his post with Petty &amp; Co., Robert was at the helm for many notable rock bands including Rush, Def Leppard, Prince, and Alice Cooper. As the Senior Specialist for live sound products for Avid Technologies, Scovill is at the forefront of the migration into digital live sound reinforcement, and is a two-time recipient of the distinguished Parnelli award for Sound Reinforcement Engineer of the Year. I spoke with Chris backstage before a recent Young The Giant show at New York’s Summer Stage in Central Park. When I told people Peter Moshay was a guest on the show, the immediate reaction was "wow!" Right away it was evident that Peter has earned the respect of his peers and colleagues in the industry, and that he is held in high esteem by those that have crossed paths with him. After a brief time at New Jersey’s legendary Trax East Recording studio, he spent most of the 1990’s and 2000’s crisscrossing the planet with bands like M.O.D, Agnostic Front, Ignite and many more. Along the way, he formalized his work with the creation Iron Sound Productions; a company providing back line, sound re-enforcement and tour logistics. By 2000, he was pulling triple duty as Tour Manager, Drum Tech and Guitar Tech for Skid Row, who was opening on the legendary KISS Farewell Tour (last tour with the original members of the band), and included a set by Ted Nugent. As the miles and years on the road continued to stack up, he further earned the respect and trust of peers in the industry. Coming off his last tour, after spending over 20 years on the road, was a time of reflection for TJ; the realization that he was just a local kid from Jersey who had the honor to travel and share a stage with some of the biggest bands in the world. There were more than enough All Access stories to fill the pages of a book, but this wasn’t a story to just be seen through the interpreted imagination of a reader. Throughout all his travels, he had been compiling video footage of life on the road. There wasn’t a story to be written. It was a story that had to be seen. First hand.  Using his video archive as a basis, he starting from the ground up recording new footage. Talking directly to Roadies; helping his peers to open up to the camera, so he could capture the film in reality. In the life that it is lived, not just as it could be filmed. He knew the business first hand. He knew the life first hand. He had lived that life. His production would be at a level never infiltrated or presented. Without this bonding of a brotherhood he shared, this film and other related projects could never have happened. Greg Howard’s first tour on the road started a little later than most, but it certainly hasn’t stopped him from making up time along the way. A Florida native, Greg has called Raleigh, N.C. his home for most of his adult life, and it’s where he started working in a music store, fresh out of college, never imagining he’d have the career he does now. Along with being one of the most in-demand guitar techs in the business, for artists such as Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, My Morning Jacket, and AC/DC, Greg is one of the founders of 3 Monkeys Amps &amp; Solderless cables. With his partners Brad Whitford and Ossie Ahsen, Greg has created a trustworthy, tone-heavy brand that continues to grow and innovate, keeping fans and customers satisfied from the very first note.

For over fifty years Chris Adamson has led the kind of career most people would dream of. As one of the most sought after Production Manager’s in the business, he’s the guy who makes sure every piece of gear and all personnel gets from one part of the world to the other safely, on time, and that the show will certainly go on. Having spent considerable time with Pink Floyd, he has the distinction of being the first voice heard on the album Dark Side of the Moon, and was recently able to relive some of his memories with the band by visiting the current Floyd exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Chris and I caught-up in Forrest Hills, NY just prior to Tom Petty &amp; the Heartbreakers taking the stage on their 40th anniversary tour, and he graciously shared his experiences with Fleetwood Mac, Emerson, Lake, &amp; Palmer, The Byrds, Steely Dan, John Mayer, and Dead &amp; Co.
