Control Your Own Destiny

In this excerpt, from one of our monthly VIP Live Zoom calls with the 10,000 NOs Insiders Community, with Best-selling Author/Speaker/Mountaineer Alison Levine, Alison shares with us that climbing Mount Everest includes a lot of climbing down Mount Everest. In order for climbers to get used to the altitude to which they'll be ascending, they take several trips to camps at various heights on the mountain. But between each night at the higher camps, they have to go back down to basecamp (which took 10 days to hike to in the first place). The parallels between climbing Everest and so many feats that we mere mortals are attempting to "climb" are endless. Alison explains that progress does not always happen in one direction. I’m late in listening to this April episode and as I shuffled through @10,000nos I’m so thrilled I landed on Matt’s interview w DB. The theme that really came through for me (because it’s what I needed today!) was FORTITUDE- courage, stick with it in the face of pain/adversity. The only negative about this podcast is that it continuously forces me to pause my walks to take notes!! Such a great format w impactful content. Dig your fire MDN..keep bringing the heat.

Dr. Christopher J. Burns is a trauma surgeon in Boston and a member of Harvard Medical School’s faculty. Before that, he was a US Navy SEAL. But the reason he is on 10,000 “No”s is that before that he was one of my best friends at Boston College.   Burns’ life reads like the script of Forest Gump and this conversation runs the gamut from two old friends reminiscing and busting chops to ample amounts of wisdom being dropped by a man who has been exposed to the extremities of the human experience both as a soldier and a surgeon.  At the very least, it will leave you wanting to join us for linguini with white clam sauce in Boston’s North End.   SHOW NOTES:  Having a first impression of Chris as a leader while we met at BC, (5:15). Relying on his religion to cope with encountering death in both the fields of a SEAL and surgeon, (1:03:46). “There are a few moments in my life where I have been privileged to be a fly on the wall. Trauma Surgeon, Navy SEAL, Gymnastics Champion, Breakdancer, Dr. Christopher J. Burns, MD, FACS

Terry Knickerbocker

For the past 20 years, Academy Award Winner Sam Rockwell has insisted on working Acting Coach Terry Knickerbocker to prepare for every one of his roles.  An actor himself prior to teaching, Knickerbocker studied at the Experimental Theater Wing at NYU before working on stage with an actor who's technique was so specific and consistent that Terry had to seek out the actor's teacher, the late William Esper.  Falling in love with the manor in which Esper worked after taking his two-year program, Terry began a 25 year stint teaching at the William Esper studio until 2015, when he ventured out on his own to open the Terry Knickerbocker Studio in Brooklyn, which offers a two-year Meisner program as well (you'll learn about the Meisner technique in the interview).  In addition to running his studio, Terry is highly sought after for private coaching with such respected thespians John Leguziamo, Emmy Rossum, Natasha Lyonne, Rockwell and Chris Messina among others.  So, while it was a huge surprise to me that Terry has been a passionate listener of 10,000 "No"s, once I got over the initial shock it made sense:  he, like me, is obsessed with process.  He is obsessed with the potential in human beings, whether they turn out to be future Oscar Winners or someone looking to hone their craft to the best of their own particular ability.  It was an honor to sit down with him and discuss the craft and the long and winding road to being considered one of the best of the best in his field.   SHOWNOTES:  Describing what he does as an acting coach, (3:37). For the past 20 years, Academy Award Winner Sam Rockwell has insisted on working Acting Coach Terry Knickerbocker to prepare for every one of his roles.  An actor himself prior to teaching, Knickerbocker studied at the Experimental Theater Wing at NYU before working on stage with an actor who's technique was so specific and consistent that Terry had to seek out the actor's teacher, the late William Esper.  Falling in love with the manor in which Esper worked after taking his two-year program, Terry began a 25 year stint teaching at the William Esper studio until 2015, when he ventured out on his own to open the Terry Knickerbocker Studio in Brooklyn, which offers a two-year Meisner program as well (you'll learn about the Meisner technique in the interview).  In addition to running his studio, Terry is highly sought after for private coaching with such respected thespians John Leguziamo, Emmy Rossum, Natasha Lyonne, Rockwell and Chris Messina among others.  So, while it was a huge surprise to me that Terry has been a passionate listener of 10,000 "No"s, once I got over the initial shock it made sense:  he, like me, is obsessed with process.  He is obsessed with the potential in human beings, whether they turn out to be future Oscar Winners or someone looking to hone their craft to the best of their own particular ability.  It was an honor to sit down with him and discuss the craft and the long and winding road to being considered one of the best of the best in his field.  SHOWNOTES:  Describing what he does as an acting coach, (3:37). Sarah Shahi is beautiful.  But despite having graced the covers of countless magazines, it would be wrong to call that her defining quality.  To sit down with her is to discover that she has humor, strength and grit that exceeds the average person.  Perhaps her steel was forged in the fires of growing up one of the few Iranian immigrants in Texas, or maybe it was from surviving an abusive father who, addicted to drugs, held a gun to her head at the tender age of 6.  Either way, this former Pageant Champion turned Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader had enough life force, and the help of an incredibly fierce mother and multiple women's shelters, to find a way out of Texas and onto our television and film screens since 2001.  From regular roles on Showtime's The L Word, NBC's Life, USA'S Fairly Legal and CBS' Person of Interest, to her brief but memorable performance opposite James Gandolfini in an Award-Winning episode of The Sopranos, she continues to turn heads.  Her portrayal of Rachel Benham on last summer's gritty Boston crime drama, City on a Hill, further solidifies her reputation as an actor with chops.  Here, she talks to me about everything from growing up as an outsider and using her pain for her art to how she manages to parent and stay connected to her kids despite an incredibly busy schedule that sometimes has her across the country from her loved ones for long stretches of time. As an actor, one of the original MAD TV cast-members, he will finally have his own show (Schooled, a spinoff from The Goldbergs).  And as co-host of the wildly popular podcast, ‘The Fighter and The Kid’, he is known intimately by millions of listeners. But it wasn’t always this busy. A believer in self-discovery and knowledge-seeking, Callen chose to bet on himself rather than waiting around to be hired. He is not afraid to speak his mind, and speak it he does. Henry Winkler is a legend that doesn't need much of an introduction.  It's likely you first knew him as "The Fonze" on Happy Days... or maybe you're a big fan of his current Emmy-Award Winning portrayal of Acting Teacher Gene Cousineau on HBO's Barry, or his equally hysterical performance as Barry Zuckerkorn, the Bluth family attorney, on Arrested Development.  But you may not know that he's the co-author of 35 children's books and one of the producers on MacGyver, or that he had to get over his self-assessment, as a kid, that he was a "dumb" outsider because he was dyslexic.  Despite his stardom and stature, he is full of humility, generosity and a love for the craft of storytelling.  His story is full of resilience and tales of overcoming his own 10,000 "No"s.   SHOW NOTES:  Henry's love and appreciation of being able to "do the work", (8:22). Henry Winkler, Your Disability Does Not Define You

Are you afraid of risk?  Have you actually taken steps to break away from the pack and follow your instincts, or are you just waiting, allowing the critic in your head to rob you of your precious days on earth?  It's never too late to take the leap and start moving toward that old dream that's been locked away, stifled and prevented from seeing the light of day.  Or maybe there's a new mountain you've been itching to climb?  But you're too afraid to risk falling from the height to which you've ascended, so you remain on the safe plateau, knowing that you're not fully living the way you did when you rose to where you are today. In this episode, I talk about the times I've risked and been rewarded.  And the times I've been too scared to jump, and ended up stagnating, rotting in the pool of my own indecision.  I also discuss my mistakes, where I let my emotions get the best of me, and acted in a way that has threatened my dreams, nearly broken my spirit, and even fractured my bones. In this episode, I talk about the times I've risked and been rewarded.  And the times I've been too scared to jump, and ended up stagnating, rotting in the pool of my own indecision.  I also discuss my mistakes, where I let my emotions get the best of me, and acted in a way that has threatened my dreams, nearly broken my spirit, and even fractured my bones. Break Out of Your Comfort Zone

At 33 years old, Chuck MacLean has worked with some of the biggest talents in Hollywood like Brad Pitt and Antoine Fuqua.  Currently, he collaborates with major players Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Tom Fontana, Jennifer Todd and Kevin Bacon with his critically-acclaimed Boston Cop Drama, City on a Hill.  What I enjoyed most in sitting down with him is his ability to say it like it is without worrying what others will think of him.  Sure, it might warrant an "explicit" rating (F-bombs abound), but you'll feel like you're back on the streets of Boston with this self-described "shitbum from Quincy" who pulled off "the biggest con of all" by hitting it big in Hollywood as a screenwriter.  If he can go from being bloody and chased by cops to creating a major hit in under 15 years, maybe you can too.  His "no" stories may just be funnier, and more dangerous, than yours! Showtime's City on a Hill Creator, Chuck MacLean:  How to Make it in Hollywood Even if You're a "Sh*tbum from Quincy"

Julie Benz is an actress.  She's been working steadily for a long, long time, but probably most recognizable as Dexter's wife, Rita, on Showtime's Critically Acclaimed smash hit, Dexter.  What you may not know is that Julie was a serious figure skater from the age of 3 to 13, on a high level.  Her rigorous training, from such a young age, has no doubt had a big effect on her career, perhaps mostly in the area of her mental game.  This is why she not only survived, but thrived after being killed off of Dexter in the 4th season's finale.  She claims to be lucky.  I beg to differ.  In my opinion, her success is the result of her ability to out-grind the competition, but you decide for yourself.   SHOW NOTES:  Growing up as a competitive figure skater, (3:20). Dexter's Julie Benz, How to Thrive Even After You've Been Killed Off

Jason "Jay" Redman is a retired naval officer and US Navy SEAL.  He also wrote the book The Trident:  The Forging and Reforging of a Navy SEAL Leader and his second book, Overcome:  Crush Adversity With the Leadership Techniques of America's Toughest Warriors, available wherever books are sold December 10, 2019.  But his story, while wildly heroic, is not without strife, setbacks and near death on a battlefield in Fallujah, Iraq 12 years ago the day of this release (September 13, 2007).  But before that, he was almost stripped of his coveted and hard-earned SEAL Trident due to behavior and decisions that were controlled by overconfidence.  In this thoughtful and humble conversation, Jay teaches us all about the power of humility and hard work, the necessity to "Get off the X" when you are amidst a "Life Ambush" (be it by gunfire, divorce, or financial disruption), and the potential for redemption after ANY disaster or misstep.  In the words that he speaks, you will hear why the sign he posted from his hospital room in 2007 caught the attention of then-President George W. Gad Elmaleh has been voted the Funniest Man in France, named Night of the Order of Arts and Letters by France's Minister of Culture and named Night of the National Order of Quebec.  He's also worked with such giants as Steven Spielberg, Woody Allen and Al Pacino... but you may know him from his hugely popular Netflix comedy specials, Gad Gone Wild, or American Dream, if you don't know him as "the Seinfeld of France".  Tonight, April 12, 2019, he adds Huge in France, the scripted Netflix Comedy Series very loosely based on his life and comedy, to his repertoire.    Luckily for me, I had the great fortune of acting opposite Gad on Huge in France, where I learned that his attention to the craft of comedy and his philosophy on taking risks are two of the biggest keys to his immense success.  We talk about comedy, acting, hard work, risk, bombing on stage, starting over from scratch and much, much more.  We may or may not have a few laughs at ourselves for the ridiculousness of two guys sitting in a hotel room talking about themselves and their work.     SHOWNOTES:  “For me I want to ‘be in a box’ as a writer, a comedian, joke-teller, storyteller, (6:20). “Comic’s sometimes say ‘I’m a comic and I want to be taken seriously and want people to see that I can be moving”, but you don’t need that, you don’t need to be serious, just be funny,” (7:39). “The comedy I like are the real life comedies that is sincere, sad, real or accident, but I don’t like gags. Some people will say it’s being a workaholic but I'm just passionate about it, (17:01). “If you don't have the language, it's hard to be yourself.", (17:59). When I met you Matt, you were talking about “feeling saucy” what does that mean?, (22:05). It’s hard to do your job but not as completely as you want, I getting there little by little but it’s a process, (27:50). The great feeling is every time that I get a laugh, I would feel like I earned it, (28:30). “I wanted to go to law school but I failed the exam”, (31:40). “I was more interested in people, humans, history than pure political science,” (32:25). Gad Elmaleh, How to go from being Huge in France to being Huge Everywhere

Erinn Hayes is funny.  There's no way around it, as I discovered at the table read of the newly released Netflix Comedy Series, Huge in France.  But less than a year before that day, she was inexplicably killed off a very lucrative gig, where she played the wife of Kevin James on his CBS sitcom, Kevin Can Wait.  They say that success is the best revenge and, after the initial shock and depression over the loss of a regular paycheck, Hayes picked herself up and got back in the game.  Not only did she succeed in landing the role of Vivian in Huge in France, but shortly after we wrapped Netflix decided to give her and Rob Huebel a spinoff of their cult-favorite Adult-Swim show, Animal Hospital, with the forthcoming Medical Police.  A real-life Mom and wife when she's not juggling her career duties or renovating houses, Erinn tears the notion of the "glamorous" Hollywood life down to the studs and talks about overcoming 10,000 "No"s. SHOW NOTES: “I’ve always been the performer kid, doing plays since I was young. I always knew that I wanted to act”, (2:55). She explains how she stumbled into an amazing theater program in college, (3:25). Once you get in certain doors there are doors that will continuously open for you, but it becomes increasingly harder to get the other doors open, (5:49). “You have to milk what you got and slowly chip away at that wall, until you get that one thing that maybe gets a little bit more views until people start to see you in most ways”, (8:50).
