To Critique Purity Culture (#22)

Seattle's own Dr. Tina Shermer Sellers (psychologist and sex therapist) joins Dan for a fascinating conversation about what is known as Purity Culture, that near-ubiquitous set of sexual-moral claims and practices that ruled the Evangelical zeitgeist in the 80s, 90s and 00s, and is still today probably the default sexual understanding of most American Protestants. But is that understanding Biblical? Does it accord well with what we are learning through science? Why did it come to such prominence? Does having premarital sex really take away "a piece of you" every time you do it, and what's with the double standards for boys and girls? We get into it all, including a bunch of interesting listener questions.Later, Dan answers a patron question: "What is the Gospel, and how do you evangelize?" (1:30:00)SEXUAL SHAME is a visceral feeling of humiliation and disgust toward one's own body and identity as a sexual being and a belief of being abnormal inferior and unworthy. This feeling can be internalized but also manifests in interpersonal relationships having a negative impact on trust communication and physical and emotional intimacy sexual shame develops across the lifespan in interactions with interpersonal relationships one's culture and society and subsequent critical self appraisal. there is also a fear and uncertainty related to one's power or right to make decisions including safety decisions related to sexual encounters along with an internalized judgment toward one's own sexual desire.Vow of Onah: http://tinaschermersellers.com/2011/02/12/the-vow-of-onah-and-other-jewish-attitudes-about-sex/Bible For Normal People purity culture episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-82-linda-kay-klein-breaking-free-from-purity/id1215420422?i=1000434395466Sex, Mom and God: https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/sex-mom-and-god-how-the-bibles-strange-take-on-sex-led-to-crazy-politics--and-how-i-learned-to-love-women-and-jesus-anyway_frank-schaeffer/369821/#isbn=0306819287&idiq=4395577Girls & Sex: Navigating the Complicated New Landscape: https://www.amazon.com/Girls-Sex-Navigating-Complicated-Landscape/dp/006220974480% of abstinence-only curricula contain serious erroneous information: https://rockthrower.blogs.com/rockthrower/files/20041201102153-50247.pdf http://tinaschermersellers.com/ Thankgodforsex.org Nwioi.com - Northwest Institute on IntimacyInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/drtinashamelesssex/Twitter: @tinassellersEdited by Scott CangemiJoin the Patreon for bonus episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochYHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/

To Be Gay Affirming (#10)

This is a tricky one, especially for those who have a genuine desire to take the Bible seriously. The argument for inclusion that J. R. Daniel Kirk presents, however, is one that I find convincing, and it is the best one of the many that I have read or heard (including by Matthew Vines, Gene Robinson, and others). Richard Hay's compassionate argument against affirmation is also presented. Many podcasts on this topic tend to focus on the emotional aspect of the issue, on the increased risk of suicide among queer teens, etc. I think those have their place, but for many Christians, we simply NEED a good argument about what to do with this stubborn text -- the Bible -- that really does seem to stand against homosexual activity. Daniel presents such an argument.Find an open & affirming church: gaychurch.orgMargaret Farley 60 Minutes clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sASG5kii-rIJames Brownson’s book: https://www.amazon.com/Bible-Gender-Sexuality-Reframing-Relationships/dp/0802868630 https://twitter.com/jrdkirkSeth Roberts playlist: https://open.spotify.com/user/dankoch/playlist/43QDpk1CQ098K2PpFcFVUy?si=BDa2luwVTC-GwdJpnXg85QJoin the Patreon for bonus episodes every month: patreon.com/dankochYHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comEmail Dan: youhavepermissionpodcast@gmail.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/

The Argument for Universal Salvation (#43)

This is the episode that some of you have been waiting 40-some episodes for. Many of you know that I identify as a universalist, meaning that I believe that everyone will be saved in the end, whatever we mean by the word “saved.” There are a lot of reasons that people believe in Hell, and there are a lot of reasons that people don’t. Many of those reasons, maybe even MOST of the reasons, I would argue have nothing to do with actual arguments or theological reasoning, or even a close reading of the Biblical text. Most reasons, I think, are psychological. Why people ACTUALLY believe in Hell, at a more psychological level, is a very interesting question, but not one that we are spending much time on today. This episode is about the arguments themselves. The most central question is: Does Hell make sense, given the God of Christianity? The next one is - how do we make sense of various sayings of Jesus that seem to teach a painful judgement? My guest today is Brad Jersak. Brad is a Canadian theologian, author, and pastor, and his book “Her Gates Will Never Be Shut” is widely considered one of the best treatments of this question. Our first 15 min or so are spent getting our bearings with the current landscape on this topic, including some term explaining, and introducing David Bentley Hart’s new book as a centerpiece of both our conversation, and the wider theological conversation. What Comes After Purity Culture? (#37)

What exactly is “purity culture,” and why is everyone talking about it? Was it really so harmful? Isn’t it pretty straightforward to not have sex until marriage? Today’s guest Linda Key Klein has interviewed hundreds of young women about their experiences in and after purity culture, and she has written a fantastic book about it, “Pure: Inside the Evangelical Movement That Shamed a Generation of Young Women and How I Broke Free.” But also, what comes AFTER purity culture? Simply an “anything goes” sexual ethic, or something more robust and still identifiably "Christian"? "Toxic Christianity" & Its Damaging Claims (#45)

“Human beings are primarily intrinsically sinful and evil.”“God’s truth can only be found in the Biblical text.”“The body and its desires are inherently wicked.”“Emotions are not to be honored and listened to; only God’s truth should be valued.”Mark Karris (author, therapist, professor at Point Loma Nazarene University) lists these among a group of claims that he believes are a part of “Toxic Christianity.” Mark and Dan talk through a number of these (false) claims, ask why it is that they get in the way of our relationship to God and our neighbors, and consider alternate options.Mark’s Original Post - https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10162264853155694&set=pb.740175693.-2207520000.1571761815.&type=3&theaterMark’s website: http://markgregorykarris.com/Mark’s Amazon author page: https://smile.amazon.com/Mark-Gregory-Karris/e/B01MZZLNV5?ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1&qid=1573700786&sr=8-1Deconversion Article Mark mentioned: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2v12uksryiwvscz/Breaking%20up%20with%20Jesus-%20a%20phenomenological%20exploration%20of%20the%20experience%20of%20deconversion%20from%20an%20Evangelical%20Christian%20faith%20to%20Atheism.pdf?dl=0Edited by Scott CangemiJoin the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochYHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/

Why "Love the Sinner, Hate the Sin" Is Psychologically Impossible (#20)

Richard Beck is a psychologist, professor, speaker and author of many books, right in what I consider to be the sweet spot: the overlap of psychology and Christian faith/theology. This is more or less where I am headed professionally, and it’s encouraging to have had a conversation like this one, so chock full of interesting, challenging, and inspiring stuff. We talk a good bit about disgust, which is a big factor in the impossibility of “love the sinner hate the sin,” but we also talk about spiritual practices and habits, Jesus and the Pharisees, and even placing cockroaches in orange juice. Later, I introduce a simple prayer practice I call The Protestant Rosary (1:26:00).Richard’s blog/site: http://experimentaltheology.blogspot.com/Directions for praying the "Protestant Rosary":1. Get a rosary2. Start where the three strands meet, near the cross, and pray one Jesus Prayer for each of the 10 beads before the spacer bead3. For the spacer bead, pray the Lord's Prayer4. Repeat until one "lap" of the rosary is finished. Repeat if you so desire.Variation #1:For each of the 10 standard beads, pray for a person in your life, i.e. "Have mercy on Derek," and imagine God's mercy enveloping Derek.Variation #2:Like Variation #1, but use multiple beads for the same person, each time saying the same prayer, "Have mercy on Derek," but with each bead, focusing on a different aspect of Derek's life, like his work life, his faith, his relationship with a loved one, his health, etc.How to End:Madame Guyon recommends taking a moment to "swallow" or accept whatever God has given during the prayer time, even if this time nothing appears to have been given; be grateful for the silence and peace. The Jesus Prayer:"Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me/us (a sinner)."Join the Patreon for bonus episodes every month: patreon.com/dankochYHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comEmail Dan: youhavepermissionpodcast@gmail.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/

To Be Egalitarian / Ordain Women (#29)

One of the most divisive questions in the modern church is whether or not biological sex plays a role in who should be allowed to preach (and there are other issues wrapped up in this one, like whether women should be primary bread-winners, etc). Egalitarians say, “No, let the women preach!” Complementarians say, “Yes, men only; that is how God set things up.” In this episode, we hear from Dan’s Godmother Barb Clark, who is an elder in an Egalitarian church, but has some nagging concerns about the whole thing. Then the bulk of the episode is spent with Rev. Bonnie Lewis, a pastor, teacher and Bible translator, who not only makes her argument for Egalitarianism, but also responds to many of the most common counter arguments from the Contemplentarian side. Finally, we get Barb’s reaction to Dan’s chat with Bonnie. To Accept Theistic Evolution (#2)

Many Christians are erroneously taught that either 1) Darwinian Evolution is true or 2) the Bible / the Gospel is true, but not both. In fact, thousands of respected scientists are committed Christians, and thousands more are leaving their churches due to perceived conflicts between science and Christianity, especially in Evangelical Protestant circles. In this episode, we hear from Amy Keeney, an Evangelical who is skeptical of some aspects of Darwinian theory, and we hear Adrian Wyard's story, how he went from devout young-earth creationist evangelist to accepting theistic evolution (and a whole lot of evidence and arguments along the way).Biologos.org Counterbalance.orgThe Language of God: https://www.amazon.com/Language-God-Scientist-Presents-Evidence/dp/1416542744/ref=asc_df_1416542744/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312115051380&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14652014232710692716&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocp...Finding Darwin's God: https://www.amazon.com/Finding-Darwins-God-Scientists-Evolution/dp/0061233501/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1547254356&sr=1-2&keywords=finding+darwin%27s+godBARNA research: https://www.barna.com/research/six-reasons-young-christians-leave-church/Join the Patreon for bonus episodes every month: patreon.com/dankochWebsite: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comEdited by Scott Cangemi and Dan KochArtwork by sprungle.co

End Times Anxiety: Part 1 (#50)

What better way to celebrate 50 episodes of YHP than to kick off a 4-part series on so-called “End Times” teaching/theology and mental health? As part of early research toward my doctoral dissertation in psychology, I conducted 20 interviews in August of 2019, collecting personal stories about how popular Christian notions of the End Times, like the Rapture, Tribulation, and the Left Behind series, affected people’s faith, theology, life trajectories, and overall mental health. This is Part 1 of 4, and it focuses on the basics, including what most Evangelicals understood would happen in the End Times, some of the ways that fear, anxiety and depression were tied up with it for many people, the connection between the end times, Hell, and salvation, a sense of a robbed childhood, mental health predispositions, family conflicts, and more. Liberal Christianity's Origin Story (#56)

it isn't as nerdy as it sounds, but... I spoke with Reverend Doctor Catherine Kelsey about the beginnings of what today we would call liberal Christianity, through the work of the theologian Friedrich Schleiermacher. His way of thinking about the experience of faith has really been resonating with me lately, and Cathie wrote a great simple book about that topic. To Question the Canaanite Conquest & Divine Violence (#30)

Did God really command the complete slaughter of everyone living in the Promised Land (men, women and children)? Would a loving God ever allow Israelite soldiers to take on additional wives as war widows (if they found them attractive and if they proved themselves to be sexually pleasing)? For 2,000 years, Christian thinkers and Biblical scholars have wrestled with difficult Old Testament passages that seem to show a violent and unloving God, one that seems to contrast sharply with other descriptions of God in the OT. Dr. Eric Seibert joins Dan to talk through this landscape of passages and problems, and to explain 14 distinct approaches that Christians have taken in dealing with them. Later, Dan answers a listener question: “What do you think of the whole #emptythepews movement?” (1:42:00)Eric’s book (The Violence of Scripture): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0800698258/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_hsch_vapi_taft_p1_i1Nuclear Taboo article: https://news.stanford.edu/2017/08/08/americans-weigh-nuclear-war/Edited by Scott CangemiJoin the Patreon for bonus episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochYHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/

Is the “Supernatural” Actually Just Natural? (#42)

Just in time for Halloween (not on purpose actually!)... What exactly is the "supernatural"? When God does something in the natural world, is that the same thing as saying that God broke the laws of physics? Theologian Thomas Jay oord helps Dan explore these questions, and whether or not it makes more sense to think of the “natural” and “supernatural” as essentially no different from one another. Or in Tom’s words, “For every event that happens in the world, there are both divine and creaturely causes.” They consider some possible ramifications of this move, including the resurrection of Jesus, miracles, the inspiration of Scripture, the life to come, and more.Tom’s website, including links to his books: http://thomasjayoord.com/Citizens - “Fear” (Spotify): https://open.spotify.com/album/0abL7FZysjxpaxEPURpBsl Edited by Laura Kondourajian Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochYHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/

To Be Theologically Progressive (#8)

This week (partly since I will be out of town next weekend) we are getting a doozy of an episode with Dr. Kyle Roberts (Dean of United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities) about progressive Christianity. What is it? Can we get a 30,000 ft view of what it looks like to be in this world? Can a progressive Christian still affirm the Trinity, Christ’s resurrection, and more? How might a progressive Christian think about atonement, Biblical inerrancy, the meaning of salvation, sexual inclusion? Kyle is here to help us out, and my friend Ben Keeney is also here to help, playing the role of a low-grade skeptic of this particular understanding of Christianity.Kyle’s Book “A Complicated Pregnancy”: https://smile.amazon.com/Complicated-Pregnancy-Whether-Virgin-Matters/dp/1506406246/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=kyle+roberts&qid=1549857844&s=gateway&sr=8-1Kyle’s co-written Matthew commentary: https://smile.amazon.com/Matthew-Two-Horizons-Testament-Commentary/dp/0802825664/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=kyle+roberts&qid=1549857870&s=gateway&sr=8-2A good progressive Christian podcast: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/homebrewed-christianity-podcast/id276269040?mt=2BC Con, Dallas, Feb 15-17: badchristiancon.comJoin the Patreon for bonus episodes every month: patreon.com/dankochYHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comEmail Dan: youhavepermissionpodcast@gmail.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/

To Trust Your Experience (Dustin Kensrue) (#38)

Is experience potentially a direct pathway to the God of the universe? Or is it simply “the heart [being] deceitful above all things”? Can we trust our spiritual experience, and if so, which experiences are trustworthy? This topic was recommended by my guest Dustin Kensrue (singer/songwriter of the band Thrice, former worship director at Mars Hill Church in Seattle), and I jumped at it. In today’s episode, we go through Dustin’s own story, from young Christian punk rocker, to prominent Neo-Calvinist, to church scandal whistleblower (sort of), to reconstructed liberal Christian, all the while considering the role of experience in that journey.Check out Dustin's new podcast Carry the Fire wherever you get your podcasts.Edited by Josh Gilbert (Gwall.Gilbert11@gmail.com)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochYHP Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/
