225: KWAME CHRISTIAN |The Art of Negotiation

Podcast cover
Read more

Kwame Christian, Director of the American Negotiation Institute, says any time two people are in a conversation and one of them wants something it’s a negotiation. The best things in life often lie on the other side of difficult conversations. We are negotiating all the time!  In this interview, he shares a series of tools to help you negotiate anything, then puts Joe through a negotiation sparring session to demonstrate. Kwame believes using “compassionate curiosity” and understand the value of relationships, the importance of deep listening and questioning are the true art of negotiating. Stay tuned to the end of the conversation for the tools he recommends to  “channel your inner unreasonable person” and win the day.

As an added bonus, if you watch on YouTube you’ll get to see Col. Nye behind the wheel for this on the move interview.

LESSONS:

  1. Learn to recognize when you are negotiating.
  2. Get CURIOUS to see what is going to get the deal done.
  3. The person asking the questions is controlling the conversation, not the person talking.
  4. LISTEN.
  5. Have compassion.
  6. Understand the value of building relationships.
  7. Use negotiating as a brainstorming session to solve problems.

114: Col. Fellinger | Key Principles of Mental Resilience

Podcast cover
Read more

With a military career spanning 26 years, retired Col. Fellinger has become a model of resilience and fitness. He asks that you bring him the hardest problems you have because he lives to overcome them. As he explains, it’s a process and one that can be practiced but not necessarily mastered. After all, if you’re not at least a little off balance, how are you challenging yourself and growing stronger? Joe and he discuss the most vital element to fitness--building mental strength through motivation, risk taking, mental agility and mental resilience. Lessons:     1.    Remember the French Paratrooper’s Prayer (to paraphrase): Give me Lord what others don’t want, uncertainty, doubt, torment and battle, but also the courage, the  energy and spirit to face them.     2.    To stay motivated take the first step and you will soon create irreversible momentum, inertia that will take on a life of it’s own.     3.    Build mental resilience through facing challenges you didn’t anticipate and generalizing the resultant confidence throughout your life.

185: Marla Sweeney and Amelia Boone teach you to crush your excuses

Podcast cover
Read more

At age 70 she tried her first Spartan Race. At seventy two years old, 16.7 miles, five thousand feet of climbing at nearly two miles above sea level, she crossed the Lake Tahoe Spartan Race Championship finish line. For Marla Sweeney, this was the twenty third time in almost as many months of crossing that line. She started this endeavor while still managing pain from a head on car accident. Is that inspiring enough for you? Marla doesn’t consider herself special and will crush all your excuses. We celebrate her and all other strong women on International Women’s Day on March 8th!

Lessons: 1. Compartmentalize. Find a way to break down big goals in tiny ones and tick them off one by one. Repeat.
 2. There’s always a way to adapt but you won’t find it sitting down.
 3. Get your whole family involved. You’ll strengthen bonds and have a support system.

075: Dandapani | This Monk’s Success Secret

Podcast cover
Read more

What could Dandapani, a Hindu monk turned adviser to entrepreneurs, have to offer to a world seemingly far removed from the monastic life? Plenty it turns out. Through his practice he has come to personify the calm in the midst of the storm, and if there is one way of being that would be a boon in the tumultuous climate of the business world, this would have to be it. Calm reflection is the key to creating positive habits of the mind and Dandapani has mastered this in his many years of practice. He has built a solid foundation of wisdom which he will touch on in this week’s podcast.Lessons:    1.    Motivation requires a lot of energy, therefore it is important to let go of the things that drain your energy including negative media, tv, toxic friends and sometimes even family.    2.    One of the greatest gifts you can provide yourself is taking a few moments each day to clarify your direction in life; once you do that, you can overcome almost every obstacle.    3.    Use positive affirmations to shape and change your mind in order to attract good things into your life.

Want to find your purpose? Go outside! That’s the sage advice from Steve Lulek, wilderness survival expert and adventure guide. Are we meant to live the bulk of our lives cloistered in cubicles, driving in steel boxes and staring at screens? How can we reverse these cultural norms in order to reconnect to the outdoors and ourselves in the process? This week Joe and Steve explore our true natures.  Lessons: 1. When you find who you are, it’s easy to let go of the things that don’t fit.
 2. Reframe adverse outdoor conditions into something to enhance the adventure.  There’s no excuse not to go outside.
 3. Feel overwhelmed? Sit silent in nature and observe to reground yourself.

Podcast cover
Read more

Mark Divine opened SEAL Fit, a Navy SEAL preparation center, in response to the stark proposition candidates faced: Ninety percent will fail if left to their own devices. Fortunately Divine has the key for bolstering their mental toughness and dramatically increasing their odds for success. He took the same journey himself after upheaving a stable but miserable career as a CPA. What he found along the way defies stereotypes. According to Divine, philosophies similar to those of gentle spirits such as the Dalai Lama and Eckhart Tolle are a more effective way to grit than those of the average drill sergeant.Watch the video episode at http://spartanuppodcast.com    Lessons:1. The human spirit soars when it's challenged.2. Life is made up of the small choices you make from moment to moment, rarely the big ones.3. The essence of mental toughness is to notice when you unconsciously make the wrong choices.4. The most important lesson for mental toughness is to know your "why."Panel Notes:Joe Desena: He looks exactly like the Navy Seal in the movie Captain Phillips that helps take out the pirates. I  am not so sure it wasn't him. Great guy, great friend that was a Seal and wrote to talk about it, but not in a way that upsets the military. He writes to help all of us develop an unbeatable mind.Col. Nye: SEAL Fit Sauna. Always know your why.  Must be disciplined.  Inspirational fitness guru and bona fide hero.  Holistic view of fitness, body, mind and spirit.  He is there to teach resilience and toughness.Sefra Alexandra: “SealFit develops warriors of all walks of life in elite-level fitness, awareness, durability and longevity. We thrive on cultivating the “Kokoro” (warrior) spirit in our clients, helping them be unbeatable in life.”We as a culture have much to learn from the Navy SEALS and Special Operations/ veterans community at large in terms of physicality, strategy and endurance. My twin brother runs a similar venture- Tactivate - to bridge the gap between the skill sets of special operations x entrepreneurship.SEALFIT Values:Loyalty – to our family and our teamService – to others before selfHonor and integrity – in public as well as in privateLeadership and followership – we must be good at both to be effective at anythingResponsibility – we take it for both our actions and those of our teammatesDiscipline – the only easy day was yesterdayInnovation – adapt, improvise and overcomeJohnny Waite: This one is all about how to teach grit. 125: Jon Levy | How to Live a More Adventurous Life

Podcast cover
Read more

Behavioral scientist & expert on adventure, Jon Levy knows what makes Spartans tick. He wrote a book about it, The 2AM Principle: Discover the Science of Adventure.  A big reason why people undertake challenges outside their comfort zone is to reach flow state, a zen like sense of timelessness, total absorption in an activity, and sense of mastery. The IKEA effect, loving an activity according to the amount of effort you invested in it, also explains how Spartans are made. But the real gift of adventure, Levy explains, is it’s transformative power. In this episode, Levy explains how to live a fun and exciting life and gain success in the process. Lessons:     1.    Say yes to experiences.     2.    Do something a little outside your comfort zone to help induce a state of flow.     3.    Take advantage of the winner effect by getting some easy victories and building momentum for larger challenges. 056: Tim Ferriss | Techniques for Better Life

Podcast cover
Read more

As one might expect from the author of the “Four Hour Work Week,” Tim Ferriss has a solid, well established routine. He awakes, meditates, exercises, journals, blocks off four hours for creative work, then frees himself for meetings and phone calls. This well balanced approach has taken him far.  When the inevitable drudging task comes around he slogs himself through it by building momentum with “Scooby snacks,” short, fun activities preceding the boring ones.  From the start of this interview it quickly becomes apparent that Ferris is a wellspring of great advice for anyone who is aiming to build a successful business or life.Lessons:    1.    Narrow things down to one or two things to focus on daily.    2.    Volunteer for great organizations then go the extra mile to stand out.     3.    Find a small but fast growing company to work for and observe the deal makers at work. Note the kind of questions they ask to get ahead. Example: “I know its impossible, but if there was a way to make it work, what would it be?”    4.    When things start going well in business, to maintain focus, separate the great opportunities from the potentially overwhelming number of good ones. Ask yourself, what it the one step that will make all the others irrelevant.

071: Chris Kresser | The Most Important Thing

Podcast cover
Read more

No one should ever wish tragedy into their own or other’s lives, but it has the potential to lead to some incredibly beneficial life changes. Chris Kresser transformed a decade long struggle with a rare chronic disease into something that benefits society. He was able to restore himself to health and is now doing the same for others. His main piece of advice, “eat real food,” is deceptively simple until you look at the food trends in American culture and realize that the majority of the people the majority of the time are doing no such thing. It may be the single most important thing you can do for your well being. Kresser explains why.Lessons:    1.    To stay focused, create a pointed mission in life; do everything that delivers you towards that mission, eliminate those things that don’t.    2.    In order to accomplish your goals, you have to be a whole person: if you don’t optimize your physical and mental well being, then you’re not much help to others.    3.    Eat real food. Maximize nutrient dense whole foods and minimize those that come from a box, bag or can or use sugar, white flour or seed oils.

155: It’s All About Your Desires says Angel List Founder Naval Ravikant

Podcast cover
Read more

www.spartan.com/155 It all boils down to desire. Is it possible to tame your monkey mind ever distracted by desires and pleasures that only soothe you in the short term? Naval Ravikant, the founder of Angel List, says to reach a true sense of happiness, it is not only possible but necessary.  Ravikant explains how to find your true calling and why doing so gifs you the upper hand in any business or personal venture. You become unbeatable. Success may involve years of hard work, but paradoxically, not much struggle. Instead it’s about a quest for flow. How can we tap into that flow? Ravikant will show you how.

Lessons:

1. If you want to be the best, you need to pick one thing to be the best at. 2. The ones who succeed are the ones who are irrationally passionate about what they’re doing.
 3. Happiness is the sense that nothing is missing in this moment.

Mini: You can Learn Optimism (pt 1) with Dr. L

Podcast cover
Read more

Host Dr. L says: Let’s move from 2019 into 2020 with a newly found practice of optimism! Although there might be some individuals who just seem more optimistic or positive, the truth is that we can all learn to practice optimism and weave some of the tenants into our life. One of the first ways that optimism can be more present in your life is by challenging the idea that painful things that happen in your life are permanent. If we begin to think of difficult times as temporary we are more likely to make better choices and feel more hopeful about the future.

LESSONS:

Optimism can be learned and if you practice certain elements of optimism routinely, you can weave a more optimistic perspective into your world.

Believing that things are not permanent can help you feel more hopeful.

Taking things as they come and using an internal dialogue that includes, “this is temporary”, is a helpful practice.

Mini: Gratitude / Spartan MIND with Dr. L

Podcast cover
Read more

With the holidays around the corner, Dr. L reminds us, the practice of gratitude and the importance of giving thanks becomes a part of the season. Gratitude is important because it allows us to shift into the present and observe what it is in the now that we are grateful for. Maintaining a gratitude practice helps to give us space to experience joy and to reflect on some of the more difficult experiences that also bring us wisdom. Work to weave in your own gratitude practice this season - it doesn’t need to be a 20-minute endeavor. A simple observation of what you are thankful for and how it is impacting you will suffice.

LESSONS: Gratitude allows us to remain present by exercising our ability to be in the here and now. Remember that we can be thankful for the difficult experiences in our life, not just those that bring us joy. Pulling wisdom and positive impact from failures is just as important. Identify a person, place, thing, experience, and failure that you are grateful for this season. This will help you move into a gratitude practice.

Hosts Zach Even-Esh and Joe De Sena talk with up and coming wrestler Ray Jaz about the difference between working smart and working hard. So many people talk about working smarter, NOT harder. Well, what we’ve realized is that when you’re working HARD, you are very often working SMARTER!

LESSONS:

Working smart is sometimes an excuse for people to avoid the work. Not at SPARTAN. The smartest worker IS the hardest worker! You should SHINE when you’re working. Your actions should shine the brightest and speak louder than words.

Mini: Building Mental Endurance // Spartan MIND

Podcast cover
Read more

Host Dr. L says: Though we often talk about endurance from a physical point of view, building mental endurance is just as important. It’s important that we stretch what we think we can do and work to increase our mental fortitude so that we can tolerate difficult experiences on the path of life. Building mental endurance is a practice - so getting yourself to practice this practice is one of the first steps. Using mantras and gathering data can also help in building this muscle.

LESSONS: Build mental endurance by practicing. Put yourself in a position where mental endurance is required and see how you hold up. Use a mantra - something you say repetitively - to help get your mind into a state of focus and attention. Gather data from your own life that helps support your own sense of mental endurance.

Mini: It’s Ok to Suck / Spartan MIND

Dr. L says we are a culture obsessed with expertise. We are in a constant hustle of one-up-manship and forgetting that we can find tremendous wisdom in not being the best. Sometimes when we give ourselves permission to suck at things we actually come out on top because we learn from the experience, gain wisdom from the failures, and extrapolate a new tolerance of getting uncomfortable.

LESSONS: Always looking to be the best and claiming your expertise can be a fool’s race. When you do something that you know you’re not good at you creative a learning experience for yourself that is essential for growth. Pick one thing every week to do that you know you’re not good at. Write down the ways that engaging in this experience gave you wisdom and new knowledge about yourself.

Zach Even-Esh is joined by guest Charlie “The Spaniard” Brenneman to talk about keeping it simple! Do you ever feel overwhelmed? If you do, take a look at your desk / workspace. Take a look at your garage, bedroom, etc. Having too much “stuff” that you don’t need will stress you out and overwhelm you. Here’s how to declutter and get more productive while being less stressed.

LESSONS:

Once a week, clean and organize the areas of your life that you spend the most time in (work place / office desk), bedroom, living room, garage, etc. Donate the clothing, books, etc that you don’t use but someone else can benefit from. Simplicity helps you remove excuses. Get rid of the “stuff” that slows you down in LIFE.

Spartan's "Chief Mind Doc" Dr. L says: Teaching your children to tolerate distress is not an easy task. It requires clear boundaries and firm NOs. It’s not always easy to be firm when your kid’s have strong wants and desires that, at times, put you in precarious positions. But it’s important that your children understand that they cannot always have their way and learn to tolerate what this feels like. As adults, they will feel disappointment, experience heartache, and see sadness. Teaching them to tolerate such feelings and exposing them to the journey will help them along the way and give them a chance to build resiliency and grit.

LESSONS: Firm NOs and strong boundaries are what children need to feel safe. Teaching your children how to tolerate distress is a critical lesson that will translate into adulthood. With friends and family, remember that you also need to set clear boundaries, say NO when you need to, and tolerate the distress that comes with it.
