Never too long and makes me feel warm!!

Katie’s podcast, Let it Out, was the third podcast I ever listened to and the first I listened to that is hosted by a fellow woman! (And fellow only child). I LOVE the long form interview style and have learned so much from Katie and her guests about self reflection and care, adventuring, and healing from my ED. This podcast, along with her and Serena’s other pod, Spiraling (which is freaking awesome), helps me learn and approach my anxiety and mental health with constructive tools. Listening to this podcast is like listening to conversations with friends while also expanding your mind. I love longform podcasts and to those that don’t, I say “listen in phases!!” Finally, Katie helped inspire me to start my own podcast with a dear friend and I didn’t even take her course! 💙

212 | Lacy Phillips of Free & Native on Situational Magnetism, Subconscious Beliefs, Body Image, Style, Authenticity + much more

Podcast cover
Read more

A few months ago I was introduced to Free & Native's Lacy Phillips through my friend Katie. Over dinner one night Katie mentioned a workshop she’d recently attended in New York led by Lacy. After hearing about her experience, I was intrigued, yet slightly apprehensive because after years of obsession and addiction to all things personal-growth, spirituality, and manifestation I was at a point where I was exhausted by content even in the vicinity of self-help. Despite my trepidation I checked out Free & Native and few clicks and several hours later, I was hooked. Luckily, Lacy’s work is anti-self help while being the most helpful content I’ve stumbled upon in recent years. From her style and aesthetic to her message and wisdom, her work became very meaningful to me in the weeks leading up to this interview so I was a bit nervous to meet her in person when it finally arrived. Fortunately, Lacy was so warm and welcoming putting me at ease the second I walked into her Brooklyn apartment. We sipped a tea infusion she made us (She's also an herbalist) and chatted for hours about everything from bodies and food to style and design to relationships and finding partnership to authenticity, envy, feeling feelings, labels, boundaries, and of course debunking myths about manifestation. She’s the real deal; kind, genuine, smart, articulate, and beautiful. I loved this episode.

I’m a huge fan of all things simple, clean and eco-friendly. That’s why when I found Branch Basics it was exactly what I was looking for in cleaning products. They have a single multi-purpose concentrate that makes cleaning simple, affordable and sustainable. All of the products use just one solution mixed with different amounts of water which makes it both easy and significantly less expensive than similar single-use products. Plus I only have to keep one cleaning solution (which saves tons of space). Branch Basics is great for tackling any cleaning job around the house, from dishes to dirty laundry.

230 | Loneliness, Manifesting, Body Image, Law-of- Attraction, and Abundance with Jess Lively

I’ve known Jess Lively for years, we both grew up in Michigan, and our paths overlapped there a few years ago. When we were both living there in 2016 we went to go see an Elizabeth Gilbert lecture about her book Big Magic and after over tacos we chatted for hours. Since then Jess has traveled all over the world in her own very Eat Pray Love-esque adventure and her life as changed so much. On that day we were both in an interesting places and I somehow shared with her off hand about Abraham Hicks over lunch, Jess ended up immersing herself in their work and implementing their concepts, along with many other teachers around the concept of law of attraction, manifestation, neuroscience, consciousness, and much more. She has  a unique  skill to distill heady esoteric content into practical terms. Most recently she's taken all of her work and created C-School, a live school in Australia where she now lives but is launching online this week. In this episode we talked about Death, loneliness, fear of not having enough time, body image and food, the law of attraction, time scarcity and time abundance, plus so much more. It was a different conversation than anything I was expecting and I loved every second.

Man, I love this episode so much.  Shawn Stevenson is so authentic, kind, funny, and knowledgable it may just be my favorite episode yet.  Shawn is the mastermind behind the Model Health Show Podcast and one of the smartest & most articulate guys I’ve met. I adore the way he presents complicated concepts in an easily understood and fun manner.  We dive into his personal journey to finding his purpose, tips for being a speaker, his personal health routines , mirror nurons, nutrition and more!  As one of the top nutrition experts in the country, he specializes in biochemistry and kinesiology and is the author  The Fat Loss Code and The Key to Quantum Health. 185 | NEW Isabel Foxen Duke on Sanity Around Food, Surrender, Diet Culture, Fat Phobia as a Social Justice Concept + much more

Podcast cover
Read more

A few years ago I was a mess around food and my body. My entire life revolved around what I was eating next. If I wasn't preoccupied with my next meal, I was thinking about what I'd eaten earlier and what that meant for what or how much I'd allow myself to eat later. On the rare occasion I wasn't thinking about food, googling gluten-free-dairy-free recipes, or checking out another vegan restaurant's menu I was thinking about my body and how I was terrified of it changing in a way I wasn't comfortable with. I'm embarrassed to admit all of this but that was my internal reality until I found the work of today's repeat guest Isabel Foxen Duke. Isabel showed me there's another way to live. She taught me why I and so many people fall into an obsession with thinness and therefore dieting and consequently food, all as a result of thinness as a standard of beauty in our culture and the pervasive diet culture that has created. She taught me about fat phobia and how I had internalized it. She taught me about intuitive eating and deconstructing my diet mentality to listen to my body's hunger and fullness signals. She taught me about emotional eating and how it's not wrong, rather it is merely a coping mechanism and a response to years of deprivation with food. She taught me to diversity my hobbies away from wellness alone and to instead focus my attention on my career, creativity, and relationships. Most of all, she helped my to finally stop fighting food and work on making my life as a whole really beautiful, not just my body. We talk about all this and more in today's very long, robust episode. As I mentioned in the inro, I took Isabel's flagship program in 2014 and it honestly really helped me. She's launching it again and that means her free video training series is available for a while so watch those videos here  to see what you think. And enjoy this episode with my friend and mentor IFD.

TIPS:

-When you find yourself counting calories even when you don't want to, actively stop yourself by thinking about anything but food.
-Keep in mind that celebrities are first entertainers and role models second. While they bring attention to these deep rooted body image issues most women struggle with in silence in and that is great, they do not aim to teach they are simply sharing their often flawed experience of being products of our society.

If you've spent any time in Wonderland at all you already know that Gabby is a beyond successful author, speaker, entrepreneur, visionary, Kundalini and yoga teacher who is legit changing the world. Her work is a direct reflection of the authentic transformational work she's done on herself and her ability to teach others to implement these principles to change their lives as well. She is obviously a huge inspiration to me & I'm thrilled to share my conversation with her with Wonderland. She is everything she appears to be and more. If you're new to Gabby she has so much to offer you! Her third book, Miracles Now is essentially a "Gabby Bernstein Greatest Hits Album." Her previous 3 books have been best sellers & are mainstays on my self. Gabby is an amazing writer, but what she loves doing is speaking! You must see her lecture, either check out her videos or check out her book tour because she may be coming your way. I'm so excited for you to get a taste of Gabby if you're new or get a tune up of all things Gabby if you're a Gabby connoisseur as I am. I love Danielle LaPorte and her work. I've been following her closely for over 5 years, reading every book and listening to her on every podcast. She's been a mentor from afar and  on my list of future pod guests (and a popular request from so many listeners!) since day one.. Danielle embodies so much of what I admire in a women. She values creativity above all else, has learned from experience how to combine fierce persistence with ease, finds gratitude in even the craziest situations, and mothers in a way I admire. She is constantly growing and learning, which she talks about on today's episode as well as in her new book, White Hot Truth, which I loved. It's a refreshing self-help book that's unlike any other self-help content. It's a playbook for owning our individual joy and spirituality without all the dogma and rules the modern personal growth world often promotes. This is one of those books that you want in hardcopy; to read, reread, underline, and notate. I took so many notes from this book about life, creativity, gratitude, finding flow and more. We cover all of these topics plus some of my others I was eager to ask Danielle about like feminism, body image,  motherhood, full-time jobs and entrepreneurship, and of course the usual quick fire questions.  Let me know your favorite parts in the facebook group and be sure to find me on social media so we can be friends there too.

I find guests for this podcast in a myriad of ways . Today's guest was recomended by a podcast listener and longtime internet friend. Our cozy conversation in her Manhattan apartment on a cold Friday night exceeded my expectations and meandered all over. Claire is not only beautiful but wise, insightful, and vulnerable. She's known for yoga yet we barely touched on yoga and instead focusing on her winding path to where she is now including  her eating disorder in her teens, how she stumbled into the career she's in now, all the way up to  her decision to go on to grad school for psychology. We talked about food psychology, the value of therapy, the complexities body positivity, being a social media influencer and what that even means, sustainable self-love, comparison in social media and beyond, journaling and writing, and much more. I am psyched about today’s episode of The Wellness Wonderland Radio, where every week I share interviews with wellness extraordinaires. Today I have the amazing health coach Quinn Asteak. She is not only an amazing chef and holistic health coach, but also half of the dynamic kitchen duo {Healthy} Cooking Camp with Robyn + Quinn.

In our wonderful conversation, Quinn and I talk everything from transitioning careers to favorite veggies to staple recipes to acne and self-care at it’s finest.

The one quote (or as we like to call them, tweetable nuggets) that really stuck out to me was this…She shared her morning practice that can be applied to anything from that extra weight around your belly you just can’t shake or a stubborn new blemish on your face before a big event. Instead of hating it (ie. beating yourself up when you see it in the mirror or picking at it)  she says give some love to it. This is what she says to that stubborn stuff most people resent. She places her hands on her belly & gives it love saying:

Isn’t that a great one? Tweet that! If you have any additional questions for Quinn, post them below and she’ll be answering your questions!

Who better to kick off season 3 of WWRadio than today's radically authentic guest. She brings out my own raw insights on our relationship with food and body image. Isabel Foxen Duke is only our second repeat guest and an emotional freedom from food extraordinaire and coach, Isabel stopped by Wonderland on episode 009 to shed light on real techniques on how to release toxic relationships to food and tell her personal food journey that led her to the work she does with women today. Most of us have become lint rollers picking up some pretty nasty thought patterns around food, whether we realize it or not. I challenge you to own it first and then listen to today's episode with an open mind about changing that.

We discuss this in our first Podcast together but the first step to freedom from emotional attachment to food and becoming what Ellyn Satter calls a 'normal eater' is to get honest about where you are. In this conversation we'll help you figure out exactly where that is. Listen to the whole thing, it's really eye opening and packed with info so you might want to listen multiple times to really let is soak in. We go really high level in this podcast so jump back to listen to our first episode together to get more info about Isabel and her personal story in episode 009. & I've also interviewed her multiple times & all those links are below as well.

If any of these things we spoke about resonate with you click here to sign up for her FREE video training series to go deep into her concepts.

This week not only do I have an amazing guest that I know you guys are going to love, but I also have some super important things to talk about in the intro. It's a bit longer than usually but it was something that I really needed to share with all of you. It also ties in with the the underlying theme of honesty that is in this entire episode. For the bulk of the episode though I get to share with you an incredible conversation Jordan Younger of the Balanced Blonde. Her story parallels mine in many ways and we share so much in common in our evolution over the past few years and how that has affected our lives and our work. She gets real about what true balance means and how being authentic and honest with yourself should come before anything else in life.

009 | ISABEL FOXEN DUKE

Podcast cover

WARNING | This post is about to get REAL. I get extremely authentic & honest about my food journey revealing some personal info to Wonderland for the first time. And who better to bring out raw emotional honesty than Isabel Foxen Duke. Emotional freedom from food extraordinaire and coach, Isabel stopped by Wonderland to shed light on real techniques on how to release  toxic relationships to food. Most of us have become lint rollers picking up some pretty nasty thought patterns around food, whether we realize it or not. I challenge you to own it!

The first step to freedom from emotional attachment to food and becoming what Ellyn Satter calls a ‘normal eater’ is to get honest about where you are. In this conversation we’ll help you figure out exactly where that is. The  goal is this: Ellen’s definition of normal eating. Isabel reads this in our chat, but here it is written out below:

“Normal eating is going to the table hungry and eating until you are satisfied. It is being able to choose food you like and eat it and  truly get enough of it—not just stop eating because you think you should. Normal eating is being able to give some thought to your food selection so you get nutritious food, but  not being so wary and restrictive that you miss out on enjoyable food. Normal eating is giving yourself permission to eat sometimes because you are happy, sad or bored, or just because it feels good. Normal eating is  mostly three meals a day, or four or five, or it can be choosing to munch along the way. It is leaving some cookies on the plate because you know you can have some again tomorrow, or it is eating more now because they taste so wonderful. Normal eating is overeating at times, feeling stuffed and uncomfortable. And it can be undereating at times and wishing you had more. Normal eating is  trusting your body to make up for your mistakes in eating. Normal eating takes up some of your time and attention, but keeps its place as only one important area of your life.

In short, normal eating is flexible. It varies in response to your hunger, your schedule, your proximity to food and your feelings.”

Hmm.. pretty interesting right? & that’s not even the best line of this Podcast, so listen to the whole thing, it’s really eye opening, juicy,  & your want to listen multiple times to really let is soak in. **Here was my favorite line, but you listen , find your own, and tell me in the comments below what resonated most with you.

My favorite power line from this interview:

“Your brain doesn’t hear negatives-so when you tell yourself, ‘don’t eat! don’t eat!  don’t eat!’ all your brain hears is, ‘eat! eat! eat!”

I've been recording this podcast in my bedroom since 2013. I've recorded over 150 hours of conversation, connected with people all over the world, and made real life friends through my guests and listeners. I've gleaned an abundance of wisdom from the diverse group of guests I've had the opportunity to uninterruptedly speak with people I deeply admire and respect, getting to ask them anything I was curious about, an opportunity I don't take for granted. At 22 years old, freshly out of college I never would have imaged how much a purely creative passion project would mean to me almost four years later or how it would have grown. I feel like a completely different person now at 26 to who I was back then when I started but one thing remains, my favorite movie is still an indie movie my college boyfriend showed me in 2010 called HappyThankYouMorePlease. This film reminded, me even if only for that hour and forty minutes, that with gratitude the universe is infinitely abundant. I told everyone about the movie and I re-watched it so often that the dvd (remember those?) my boyfriend gave me wore out. Two years later, probably sick of rewatching the same movie on repeat he showed me a new movie called Liberal Arts he claimed I'd like equally as much since it had the same writer, director, and star as the first movie I fell in love with. He was right. I fell hard for Liberal Arts too. This film was timely since we'd just graduated from college and were wrestling with the concept of adulthood which Liberal Arts directly and beautifully tackles. These movies led me to explore their creator the man both in front and behind the camera: Josh Radnor. I realized Josh was was a really famous guy from starring in the hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother, I also learned he was midwestern like me, a meditator like me, and a deeply self-aware, wise, and kind human being. I became as fascinated with him as a person as I was by his work. He inspired me, he made me think about things like religion, creativity, and writing in a new way and above all his insight inspired me to want to be better at being myself and expressing myself creatively. Whenever anyone would ask who my dream podcast guest would be I would say Josh, not knowing the slightest how I could get a hold of him or make that happen. It seemed like a pipe dream, but long story short it happened and today you're hearing my conversations with one of my favorite people, someone whose work is super meaningful to me and above all someone from what I can tell is genuinely kind, generous, wise and woke. Enjoy my dream come true of a conversation with Josh Radnor.

Today's episode is with the very wise Dr. Christiane Northrup. She's an OBGYN who has been the leader in holistic female health since the early 1990s. She's been featured on Oprah several times and her many best selling books have helped shift people's approach to health (like the bigger picture 'health' that expands beyond the physical), especially for women. For long-time pod listeners you may remember that I interviewed her daughter Kate Northrup as one of my first guests on the show. Dr. Northrup is so wise and gives such interesting information about sex, pleasure, and relationships as well as so much more in this episode. In our conversation we cover her background and her past work, why it has been so important and how that has led her to the work she is doing now and her latest book she wrote. We cover her wisdom gained on 'getting older', the changes in the medicine and wellness industry, the importance of embracing sexuality, the interconnectedness (in our bodies and beyond). She lists so many good resources in this episode, especially books, so be sure to check out the show notes below. If you have any questions for Dr. Northrup or myself tweet at us or reach out to us in the Facebook Group here.

278 | Meditation, Anxiety, social overwhelm, body peace, rest, Bread with Butter + More with Savala Nolan Trepczynski

Podcast cover
Read more

A few months ago, I heard Savala as a guest on Christy Harrison's Food Psych podcast and instantly liked her and hoped to have a conversation with her. Savala Nolan Trepczynski is a lawyer, writer, mother, and very funny wise person. I related to her in so many ways. Although our backgrounds are vastly different, the way we engaged with diet culture was actually pretty similar. I started following her on instagram and am so glad I had the opportunity to have her on the pod. This week's episode is a long one. I open up on where I am with body image and re-recovery. We cover so many topics including: technology, anxiety, the importance of rest, meditation, romantic relationships, the importance of bread with butter, personal style & getting dressed when you don’t feel good about your body, size fluctuations, and way more. She's so magnetic and friendly -- this is one of my favorite episodes in a while.

This is a special edition episode, out of the usual format but you'll hear:
-a conversation about releasing the HOW- letting go.
-BODY talk - from healing from injuries, to gentle exercise, unsolicited body advice, and how we're all handling being more in our bodies and less in our heads.

  • taking a beat before walking into a room....to get into your body

Every year I run a workshop for podcasters called Let [a podcast] Out. There's a contest element where I choose 1 episode to air on this podcast feed. This year going through the the entires I struggled a lot to choose. They were incredible and diverse, from a fiction podcast from an English professor to a poem podcast. What you're about to hear is a variety show of sorts, you'll hear me interview the hosts of two of the contest winners, clips from their episodes, and a clip from my anxiety podcast Spiraling with Serena. I included the clip with Serena in this because the last time I ran this workshop I made a new podcast along side the group. Last few days to sign up for the next round of the workshop! OR just take the free mini course here.

The Wisdom Within Podcast with Zoe Graman

The universe has your back. I know this from personal experience. Six months ago today, a big change occurred in my life that set a massive phase of transformation in motion. In this episode, I share my biggest lesson from this transition.

I discuss:

  • The experience of losing my full-time job
  • The responsibility we have to focus our energy on the ‘what’s’ and ‘why’s’ of our lives
  • Releasing our grip on the ‘how’ and allowing the universe to show up for us in ways we could have never expected or planned ourselves

276 | painful sex, the loneliness of shame, embarrassment and the importance of community and personal storytelling with Allison Behringer

Podcast cover
Read more

I'm so happy to have storyteller and audio producer Allison Behringer on the podcast this week. She’s the creator of a podcast called BODIES. We talk about her podcast Bodies, what the process of making it taught her, and why women telling their stories about their bodies is so cathartic. This is an intimate episode. We've talked about sex a lot on this show but in this episode you’ll hear me let it out on something I was particularly scared to share. I had a lot of shame around the fact that I had vaginismus. It's a condition making sex painful or difficult. Brené Brown says shame can’t exist when it’s shared and I think that’s why personal storytelling are so wonderful. We talk about why telling personal stories is so important, community, the importance of mothers and daughters talking about sex, and much more in this conversation.

273 | You Don't Have to Look Sick to be in Pain: Eating Disorder Recovery, Lying, Social Media, Addiction, and Support with The Chain Founders Christina Grasso & Ruth Friendlander

Podcast cover
Read more

It's fitting to air this episode during New York Fashion Week. From what I've heard, for those in the industry it's a week with no-sleep, harsh style comparisons, high stress, and a triggering one for those recovering from disordered eating. This week's conversation os with the founders of The Chain, a peer network for women in fashion and entertainment is fitting. Co-founded by writers Ruthie Friendlander and Christina Grasso, the group is particularly active during NYFW, supporting and connecting their community. The Chain's message is useful to anyone regardless of industry who has struggled with body image and disordered eating. I met the founders at one of their events this spring and loved their vulnerability in how they discussed their recovery ups and downs. I've learned a lot from them, like how disordered eaters tend to be good liars and that self honesty and support are key to true recovery. We recorded this in Ruthie's apartment this summer and covered their experience with disordered eating, what helped them, as well as what they've created with The Chain. My friend writer Rose Truesdale appears in the intro where we talk about travel and disordered eating a bit too, enjoy this episode.

-Ellyn Satter's definition of normal eating: "Normal eating is being able to eat when you are hungry and continue eating until you are satisfied. It is being able to choose food you like and eat it and truly get enough of it-not just stop eating because you think you should. Normal eating is being able to use some moderate constraint in your food selection to get the right food, but not being so restrictive that you miss out on pleasurable foods. Normal eating is giving yourself permission to eat sometimes because you are happy, sad or bored, or just because it feels good. Normal eating is three meals a day, most of the time, but it can also be choosing to munch along. It is leaving some cookies on the plate because you know you can have some again tomorrow, or it is eating more now because they taste so wonderful when they are fresh. Normal eating is overeating at times: feeling stuffed and uncomfortable. It is also under eating at times and wishing you had more. Normal eating is trusting your body to make up for your mistakes in eating. Normal eating takes up some of your time and attention, but keeps its place as only one important area of your life.

In short, normal eating is flexible. It varies in response to your emotions, your schedule, your hunger, and your proximity to food."

272 | Andrew Bird on Discipline, Slow-Growth, Creation, and more

Podcast cover
Read more

Andrew Bird has been a musician I’ve been aware of forever. Everyone I knew loved him so through peer pressure I started to listen to him too. Soon I too, became a fan of the midwestern, whistling musician. I love how distinctive and intentional he his with his music and lyrics. In this episode, he talks about the slow growth he had coming up as a musician, his discipline and patience in building his career, and how letting go, slowing down, and taking a break was really what actually helped him move forward. He started playing violin at four, using the Suzuki method. This classical training required strict adherence to rules--rules he ended up breaking to create his own signature style. He’s extremely prolific, he’s released 15 albums in the past 13 years. My Finest Work Yetis his latest album, is my favorite one yet, it’s filled with smart lyrics, including mythology--which we talk about in this episode, as well as fresh melodies, probing themes, and of course whistling. Andrew Bird and I sat down at the Emerge Music Festival to talk about his song-writing, how he met his wife, what his life is like now, what he learns from parenting his son, and of course whistling.

I love that on their dosage instructions on the bottle it reminds me to take 3 deep breaths before using. It’s such a grounding process and I’m so excited to share their wonderful products with Let It Out Listeners.

Listen - my skin is really sensitive so I don't try out a lot of products, but I've been using Bioclarity for YEARS and I'm really excited they're sponsoring the podcast. They're a clean, green, skin care company that is cruelty-free, paraben-free, sulfate-free, and have no artificial fragrances. It's helped me a lot with the hyper pigmentation from acne scars. I use their clear skin routine for combination/oily breakout prone skin. They have other skin care regiments but that's the one that I use right now. It comes with everything you need to make your skin look great. It's not overly drying, it helps with redness and events out my skin tone. It's a 3 step process cleanse, treat and restore. I used their spot treatment for a pimple I had the other day but when I woke up the next day and it was gone. I honestly love this stuff and I hope you guys give it a try because they're offering Let It Out listeners a really good deal.
