Donald Trump is the most important political figure of the early 21st century. No one else has been able to turn the political discussion on a dime like Trump, and that discussion quickly turned to immigration and the 14th Amendment on October 30, just days after everyone was talking about political violence. Not anymore. But can Trump end birthright citizenship with an executive order, and is birthright citizenship codified by the 14th Amendment? No and no, and I discuss both issues in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

Larry Reed at FEE asked a couple of years ago, are we Rome? He pointed to a number of troubling similarities between the Roman Empire and the modern United States. I answer yes for several reasons, not the least of which is political corruption. Americans should study not only U.S. and British history, but also classical civilizations like Greece and Rome. This provides perspective on our current moral, economic, and political plight. You want blood? We got it.

Donald Trump ordered a drone strike on Iranian General Soleimani in Iraq and in the process created a potential crisis in the Middle East. What was an Iranian general doing in Iraq? The parliament in Iraq subsequently passed a resolution asking the United States to vacate at once which has led to a conflict in the Trump administration. Trump promised to get the United States out of the Middle East. This would be a good thing, and perhaps his drone strikes will have the desired--though unintended--effect after all. I avoid the constitutional questions surrounding the drone strike and instead offer an explanation of why Iraq is or is not important to the United States in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

If you watched Spielberg's Lincoln, then you undoubtedly know that the prevailing myth has Lincoln pushing for the 13th Amendment, so much so in fact that he was unwilling to compromise when he secretly met with Southern representatives in Hampton Roads in February 1865. Except this isn't  true. Paul Escott blew this narrative up before Spielberg produced Lincoln and yet he continued with the myth anyway. Why? Because you can't have a war that killed nearly 1 million Americans without some moral justification, even if it is a lie. Donald Trump tells a crowd that NFL owners should fire players who take a knee. A few days later, 25% of NFL players took a knee and some refused to take the field during the "national anthem." One baseball player decided to take a knee as well and several NBA players took to social media to give Trump an earful. What is going on here? Judge Napolitano has become public enemy number one for the Trump administration. Why? Because he argues Trump deserves to be impeached. This does not sit will with Fox News viewers who think Judge Nap has gone to the dark side. Is Napolitano right? More importantly, should he be taking the heat from both the Trump administration and the viewers at Fox? I discuss the issue in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

Episode 270: How World War II Screwed Up America

Podcast cover
Read more

World War II was a transformational event. It offered the United States general government the opportunity to codify the aggressive Lincolnian   nationalism prevalent but not triumphant since 1865. The entire United States was affected politically, militarily, diplomatically, and socially. I discuss how this happened in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

Episode 269: Which Ancestors?

Podcast cover

In 1956, the great Southern philosopher Richard Weave penned a review of Russell Kirk's Conservative Mind where he asked which ancestors we should emulate. There are several traditions in America but which traditions are best? Should we follow Lincoln, the progressive tradition, or something else? Just as with the definition of liberty, tradition can be a thorny issue. I discuss Weaver and his brilliant essay in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

Episode 268: Does Nullification Naturally Lead to "Civil War?"

Podcast cover
Read more

Michael Vlahos argues at The American Conservative that "civil war" is the natural result of two competing "legitimacies" slugging it out for control of the same government. This I agree with. But he falls flat when he suggests that this has occurred twice in American history and when he considers nullification to be a root cause of such conflict. I was disappointed with this article to say the least, so I discuss it in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

Episode 266: Jefferson and Taylor Talk Secession

Podcast cover
Read more

Most people seem to think that "think locally, act locally" is the product of some crazy conspiracy and distortion of history. Not so. In fact, two of the greatest American minds openly discussed federalism and decentralization. An amazing 1798 exchange between Thomas Jefferson and John Taylor of Caroline highlights that our political problems are not new and even members of the founding generation thought "think locally, act locally" was the only real solution to the problem of an out of control central government.
