138: Bootcamp, Marine Corps Recruit Training East and West

On this episode of Cigars and Sea Stories Bennett and Mike talk bootcamp, Marine Corps recruit training east and west. Marines are made on both sides of the country. Each recruit training depot poses unique challenges; east coast with it’s sand fleas and west coast with it’s hills. Recruits are trained in the exact same way. Both Parris Island and San Diego have graduated outstanding Marines. Still, Marines have a sibling rivalry when it comes to their bootcamp upbringing. “Hollywood Marines” have been catching s**t for wearing shades since the ‘80s. But, PI is the only spot you’ll find lady recruits in every company. Long stretches of beach sand marches, humps up the reaper, swamps and recon ridge -- whatever it takes to earn that eagle, globe and anchor. CORPS!   On this special-edition episode of Cigars and Sea Stories, Tim Parkhurst, Bennett Tanton, and Michael J. Penney interview presidential candidate Mr. Evan McMullin. He’s smart, down-to-earth, and speaks plainly about life. It’s a rare and interesting interview. On September 11th, 2001 Evan was in training at CIA Headquarters in Langley, Virginia. He completed his training and repeatedly volunteered for overseas service in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia, spearheading counterterrorism and intelligence operations in some of the most dangerous places on earth. Having completed his CIA service, in 2011, McMullin transitioned to the Investment Banking world, where he worked with companies in several industries to include; technology, energy, consumer goods, biotech, industrials and real estate on capital raising projects and mergers and acquisitions. In 2013, McMullin joined the House Committee on Foreign Affairs as a senior advisor and later became the chief policy director of the House Republican Conference. He declared his candidacy for President of the United States on August 8, 2016, saying “In a year where Americans have lost faith in the candidates of both major parties, it’s time for a generation of new leadership to step up. It’s never too late to do the right thing, and America deserves much better than either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton can offer us. I humbly offer myself as a leader who can give millions of disaffected Americans a better choice for President.” (original text; evanmcmullin.com) We hope you enjoy this one-off episode of Cigars and Sea Stories. On this episode of Cigars and Sea Stories, Mike and Bennett are sharing sea stories from their time in the school of infantry. Bennett went to SOI east out on Camp Geiger in Lejeune. This was early 90s era when the school house was the next stop for all new Marines fresh out of recruit training. There are a few sea stories in this episode that start with, “we knew that sh!t would get us in trouble, but only if we got caught.” Those are the type of stories we like around here. Bennett and his buddies traveling out of bounds in a rented car. Barely making it to formation after a long weekend of debauchery. Mike spent his infantry training time out in Pendleton at SOI west. Taking the shuttle every weekend into to old town San Diego for a romp around the city finally winding up at the good night inn to sleep it off then do it all over again the next day. Read more

On this episode of Cigars and Sea Stories, Mike and Bennett are discussing the invasion of Normandy to celebrate the anniversary of D-Day, June 6th, 1944. The invasion was supposed to take place days before, however rain and fog delayed the efforts of hundreds of thousands of allied troops. Finally, after long anticipation, the fog lifted and they travelled across the english channel in higgins boats ready to bring justice to the Nazis that were actively conquering Europe. What an awe inspiring sight it must have been. MG-42s rained down heavy volumes of fire from Nazi pill boxes. Shrapnel, rifle and pistol caliber projectiles, bangalores, bazookas, flame throwers, air assets, bombardments etc., the orchestrated chaos of war. This was the first time many of the landing troops had even seen combat. They new what it meant putting on a uniform and raising the flag in enemy territory. Putting an end to tyranny, slaughter, and oppression. It is through their selfless sacrifice that freedom prevailed. A true testament of our human spirit. We are truly grateful for those brave souls who faced the enemy and ultimately prevailed. Thank you for your sacrifice through service.  CIGARANDSEASTORIES.COM/5P Follow us on Facebook @CIGARSANDSEA Sponsored by Veteranslist.us - get 50% off a featured membership by using discount code CIGARSANDSEA Spartan Media - Veteran owned and operated We are a proud member of Heroes Media Group Heroes Media Group; a broadcasting platform dedicated to providing a voice for our community heroes and those who support them.
