Rank #6: EP26 - Jealousy during infertility

Podcast cover
Read more

In this open episode, we talk about the thorny topic of feeling jealous during infertility. It’s incredibly common and can be really difficult to cope with at times.

Learn 3 top strategies to help you reduce or mitigate jealous feelings and instead feel more empowered on your fertility journey.

Firstly we talk about how normal it is to feel this way. When we open up about it, every person feels this way at some point and it’s important to normalise that. These feelings are valid and it’s ok to experience these emotions.

In the podcast, international fertility coach, Karenna Wood, talks about how we can’t allow these thoughts to take up residence within us - that we need to feel them and let them go as they don’t serve our emotional wellbeing. It’s also important to know that these feelings don’t affect your identity- it doesn’t mean you have changed into a ‘nasty, jealous person’; it just means you are going through a really tough part of your life and jealousy is one way of coping with that.

Listen in for 3 strategies to reduce any jealous feelings you might be having and in particular try out the ‘controversial’ third suggestion of having compassion for that other person. It’s a tricky one and we can’t always do it, but when we can start practicing thinking in this way - it can be really transformational.

Finally, we talk about how jealousy is often an indication or reflection of grief, sadness and anger within you and give you some practical ways that you can start to process these emotions and be working on the root cause of the jealousy.

In this episode:
  • Jealousy during infertility - it’s normal!
  • Jealous feelings are valid but don’t need to be all consuming
  • Learn 3 top tips to reduce jealousy during infertility
  • Where jealousy often comes from
  • Practical strategies to help process emotions and improve wellbeing

Podcast cover
Read more

Learn from fertility expert, Kirsten Karchmer about how to find your fertility formula, what your cycle is telling you and what areas you can work on to improve your natural fertility.

In this episode, we interview Kirsten Karchmer (Founder & CEO of Conceivable and Viv Wellness) about her unique approach to infertility, built after 20 years treating over 10,000 infertile couples.

We learn how to combine both a western and eastern approach to fertility and about all the factors that could be affecting your fertility.

Kirsten talks about the importance of taking fertility tracking or charting to the next level (an interactive level) and how to investigate your menstrual cycle for indicators of ways to boost your natural fertility.

We talk about how it’s not necessarily one element that needs changing, but many small levers that need identifying and tweaking to improve fertility.

Going in-depth into these ‘levers’, we talk about diet, exercise, reading your cycle, stress, menstrual symptoms, cervical discharge and what changes you can make in each of these areas that can add up to a huge difference in your overall and fertility health.

Finally, Kirsten tells us how she uses fertility herbs to boost effectiveness by up to 500%. She says that there are ‘no herbs that are good for fertility’ in a general sense, but that they need to be tailored to the individual and part of the menstrual cycle.

You can learn more about the unique Conceivable personalised fertility formula here.

In this episode:
  • What’s the difference between the over 600 fertility tracking apps out there and Conceivable’s unique fertility formula
  • The myth that ovulation day is the best day for conception and that some ovulation kits miss the important window just prior to ovulation
  • The correlation between stress and fertility and how reducing stress needs to be part of your fertility formula
  • The link between the stress hormone ‘cortisol’ and low progesterone
  • The symptoms of low progesterone
  • How a cycle length of fewer than 26 days and more than 32 days can decrease the likelihood of conception by 50%
  • How cramping, PMS and is correlated with infertility
  • The importance of drinking enough water for producing cervical discharge, which is an important measure of your fertility
  • How diet, especially high sugar and high carbohydrates, is damaging to our natural fertility
  • Which fertility herbs can help your fertility and how they need to be tailored to the individual and part of the menstrual cycle
  • How a customised intervention or personalised fertility formula can be the most effective way to boost your fertility formula

Rank #8: EP21 - Mindfulness: The secret weapon for infertility

Podcast cover
Read more

In this episode, Karenna talks about the power of mindfulness. It’s not just a buzz word or only for the few - it’s now a mainstream technique that is scientifically-proven to raise emotional wellbeing and improve natural fertility.

Most of us spend most of our thinking time in two places - the past and the future. We rehash past events, allow regrets to simmer or project forward into the future - often visualising the worst-case scenarios or catastrophizing our futures.

It can get very overwhelming being ‘in your thoughts’ all the time. They feel like they have control and you feel like you’re losing it!

Some people worry that by being mindful they are changing their approach to their fertility journey. Being mindful does not mean you are becoming passive or change how much you want that baby. Instead, it can make you feel better every day and improve your chances of conceiving too.

We discuss some of the benefits of mindfulness and how free people feel when they start a regular practice and aren’t immersed in their thoughts. Karenna mentions studies that have found a positive impact on emotional wellbeing across the board when women are taught mindfulness. Women were found to feel stronger, more able to cope, increasingly self-compassionate and able to regulate their emotions.

Excitingly, the studies also show an increase in the pregnancy rate and IVF success rates (e.g. recent example of a study here) So this is more than just a wellbeing factor, this is actually a tool you can use to boost your natural fertility and increase your chances of conceiving.

In the final part of the podcast, we talk about top tips for mindfulness and how to start with a quick example live on the podcast.

In this episode:
  • What is mindfulness?
  • Why do we need mindfulness?
  • Where are we spending our time if it’s not in the present moment?
  • Common concerns
  • Benefits of mindfulness for infertility
  • Top tips to get started on a regular mindfulness practice

Rank #10: EP20 - Faith and Fertility

Podcast cover

Caroline’s faith has led her through her own fertility journey and she now inspires thousands of others with her approach

You are going to love meeting Caroline in this episode! Caroline is an infertility blogger who’s faith has supported her through her own 6-year battle with infertility and has led her to now inspire and support thousands of other women worldwide.

Caroline’s fertility story started not long after her wedding when tests revealed she had a pituitary tumour and her husband azoospermia (no sperm). They were told it was impossible for them to have children naturally.

She lent on God for guidance and he told her to write a blog. Several years later and this blog (In Due Time) has led her to now lead a huge wave of faith-based infertility support on her blog, social media channels and through ‘Moms in the Making’. This started as a support group in her home (which continues) but has now developed into 15 groups across North America, a new virtual group and an annual conference with people attending from all over the world.

In this episode, we talk through Caroline’s personal fertility journey and also ask the tough questions about faith and fertility. She opens up about the hard days when she doesn’t always understand God’s path for her, but how her journey has actually deepened her faith and relationship with God.

“I believe you can choose to run away from the Lord or run to him.”

We talk about how even if you’re not religious, that infertility challenges you and becomes a spiritual journey. That the lack of answers drives you to question life’s fundamentals and your faith in life and love.

She suggests that the fertility journey “can be good if we choose that” and offers her advice on how you can achieve this. She talks about not putting your life on hold, self-care and how important support and meeting other women TTC has been for her and how you can get involved.

In this episode:
  • Faith and Fertility - how to keep the faith and how your faith can support you
  • How starting her blog has transformed her life
  • Caroline’s personal fertility journey
  • How even if you’re not religious yourself, you can find faith to sustain you on your journey
  • Caroline’s advice to others

Rank #11: EP15 - Changing negative thoughts to boost your natural fertility

Podcast cover
Read more

In the last episode of 2017, we talk about one of the greatest challenges during infertility - negative thinking. It’s a huge topic and this episode uses one simple technique to help you challenge some of your negative thoughts - simply being your own best friend.

So we start by being aware of what some of your common negative thoughts are e.g. ‘This is never going to happen for us - I’m never going to get pregnant’ or ‘I’m not worthy of a baby’ or ‘My partner must resent me because it’s my fault we can’t conceive’ and using a thought journal to write them down. Then challenge that thought by saying to yourself what your best friend would say to you.

Imagine your best friend is stood in front of you listening to your innermost thoughts and then responding. Everytime you start thinking in that way, listen to your inner best friend and you will quickly start to see a difference in how you feel.

We also talk about the mind-body link and how thoughts actually create emotional and physical reactions in our bodies and how it can actually improve your health as well as your emotional well being when you start to become aware of your negative thoughts and being kinder to yourself.

2018 is going to be a big year for Your Fertility Hub. There will be lots more great tips and tools in the podcast, more great free resources in Your Fertility Toolbox and we’re asking you to get in touch if there’s anything you would like to know more about, want us to blog or podcast about and any way in which we can support you more on the emotional side of your fertility journey.

In this episode:
  • Common negative thoughts whilst trying to get pregnant
  • Becoming aware of your most common negative thoughts
  • Using a thought journal to keep a check on what you are thinking
  • Being your own best friend and responding to yourself just how your best friend would
  • Learning to catch yourself thinking in a negative way
  • How we can’t always challenge our thinking - sometimes we need to use distraction or other methods
  • How your thoughts create a chemical and physiological reaction in your body and how positive thinking can actually improve your health

You can’t choose a situation but you can choose how you RESPOND and how you THINK about it!

Rank #12: EP5 - 3 quick relaxation techniques for fertility calm

Podcast cover
Read more

Episode 5 (14:09 minutes) teaches you 3 quick relaxation techniques you can use at any time to help you de-stress and to assist you in changing those real peak anxiety times into moments of calm and feeling in control.

These three different techniques are a great addition to anyone’s emotional toolbox, so you can whip them out right when you need them. So the next time you’re waiting in the doctor’s office or someone springs a pregnancy announcement on you - take a moment to implement one of these short, simple techniques to help you get through and not feel overwhelmed by it all.

  1. 7:11 Breathing - this simple breathing technique asks you to breathe in to the count of 7 and out to the count of 11. The long exhalation stimulates the relaxation response in your body and the act of counting is a great distraction, allowing you to focus just on your breathing whilst your body’s natural relaxation system gets to work. Make sure you are breathing in fully and deeply into your abdomen and take as many of these breaths as you need
  2. Quick Body Scan - this technique is a visualisation of moving through your body scanning for any areas of tension. If you identify any tension (commonly in the jaw, shoulders or abdomen), focus on relaxing that area and breathing into it. You can repeat this exercise as many times as you like until you can feel fully relaxed throughout your body. This is a great technique to use before bed, helping both your mind and body to be relaxed and peaceful before sleep
  3. Mindfulness - sometimes a tricky technique to master, but a great way to take your focus away from being ‘in your own head’ into what is going on around you in the present moment. Typically, this is best achieved whilst out and about e.g. walking as this gives you lots of opportunities to be aware of all the messages coming in to your senses. Practiced regularly, this technique can really start to set in place a carry-over relaxation effect and also more gratitude and awareness of what’s positive in your life right now.

Join the FREE Your Fertility Toolbox from yourfertilityhub.com to learn many more relaxation tools, access guest expert guides and resources and weekly articles plus our exclusive community of women supporting each other.

In this episode
  • An overview of 3 quick self-help tools for relaxation
  • 7:11 Breathing (02:37)
  • Quick Body Scan (05:35)
  • Mindfulness (08:33)
  • How mindfulness in conversations can be transformational

In the first episode of 2018, we unashamedly jump on the January bandwagon and talk about setting goals. However, we do it in a very different way to what you might be used to.

You may feel that setting goals during infertility is pointless as things change and you don’t have full control over your journey and destiny. We talk about how, of course, there are many elements out of our control but how there are also many that are within our control and by taking back control it can transform your fertility mindset and outcome.

As a fertility coach, Karenna starts every coaching relationship in this way - by getting really specific about the areas each client would like to change and what it looks like when that change has happened. In this podcast, we walk you through several ways of setting goals for both your fertility lifestyle and also your fertility mindset.

By setting goals, taking back control over some areas of your life and working on your mindset, it can literally transform your everyday experience of infertility AND (the exciting bit!!!) can actually improve your natural fertility through the power of the mind-body connection.

So tune in to get specific about YOUR fertility goals and to supercharge your fertility journey. Grab a pen and paper if you like to take notes and don’t be afraid to hit pause and return to certain questions so you can fully tease out your goals and what it looks like when you achieve them!

  • Setting goals for your fertility
  • Why it’s important to set goals
  • How to get really specific about your goals and actually visualise what achieving them looks like
  • Asking specific fertility coaching questions and using real-life client examples to demonstrate what fertility goals sound like
