Pawprint | animal rescue podcast for dog, cat, and other animal lovers

Have you ever wondered what it takes to place a stray dog or cat in a permanent home? Meet the everyday heroes of animal rescue and foster who use hard work, dedication, and out-of-the-box ideas to give homeless dogs, cats, and other pets a second chance. We share inspirational stories from leaders, volunteers, and experts in animal and pet rescue, health, training, and behavior. Hear also from people who go above and beyond to be a hero - a hotel that fosters dogs in their lobby, and a man who has driven his truck a million miles to save over 55,000 dogs. These are just some of the people who sacrifice their time - visiting their local dog and cat shelter, fostering animals of all kinds, and advocating for pet safety and preventing cruelty - to make dog, cat, and other animal rescue a reality. 60: Nancy and Harold talk Clear the Shelters, Pit Bulls, & Our Shy Foster Dog

Nancy and Harold Rhee discuss the successful Clear the Shelters adoption day in Berkeley, California, along with our upcoming podcast series on Pit Bulls. We also discuss the downside of offering free pet adoptions, and our very shy foster dog, Curry. Show recap notes at http://thisispawprint.com/60 Our Periscope live video account https://www.periscope.tv/thisispawprint/1ZkKzpEOAqRJv Our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/thisispawprint/ Our dogs’ names are Nacho, Lego, and Evie. Clear the Shelters was an effort of NBC partnering with local animal shelters in the United States for a coordinated animal rescue day on Saturday, July 23, 2016. Clear the Shelters has grown in its two years of existence, and over 47,000 pets were adopted in 2016 due to this terrific partnership. Website http://www.cleartheshelters.com Clear the Shelters video Featuring the local NBC station and many rescue organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area. http://www.nbcbayarea.com/on-air/as-seen-on/Clear-the-Shelters_-More-than-46_000-Pet-Adopted_Bay-Area-388189702.html Nancy and Harold fostered Chloe, who got adopted, and currently foster Curry. Diane Roth fostered Noodle, who was found extremely malnourished. We interviewed Diane, she was a fascinating guest! http://www.thisispawprint.com/22-diane-roth-piglet-the-chihuahua-single-source-dog-food/ The Good and Bad of Free Adoptions Clear the Shelters featured either reduced fee or free adoptions. While this positively increases interest in pet adoptions, the downside is free adoptions can attracted people looking for “bait” dogs and cats for dog fighting, along with folks trying to make some quick money. They do this by adopting an animal for free with the intention of selling the animal for a profit. 9: Greg Mahle, Rescue Road Trips: Trucking A Million Miles to Save Thousands of Dogs

Greg Mahle of Rescue Road Trips shares his story of dedication to his family, including his wife Adella, and to thousands of dogs over the years.   Approximately twenty-six times a year, or every other week, Greg and one hired driver take a seven-day journey from Ohio to Southern states like Texas and Louisiana to fill up a tractor trailer with up to seventy dogs. They then head to Northeastern states like Pennsylvania and Connecticut to deliver each dog to their respective permanent or "forever" homes. That's a 4,200 mile round-trip, every two weeks!   Learn more about Greg's story, such as WHY he has made this journey every two weeks for years, the ups and downs of life on the road with a huge pack of dogs in a truck, and the many dedicated people who help make these road trips successful.   Donate (Donate here!) If you are looking for the YouCaring site that Greg Mahle mentioned in the interview to donate, the site has been closed for a very good reason - it reached its goal!! We'll give an update to Greg's fundraising efforts on an upcoming episode with Peter Zheutlin, author of Rescue Road. If you want to donate to Rescue Road Trips to pay for diesel, help with truck repairs, and most importantly, help save thousands of dogs, donate here. Book Greg Mahle's work and dedication inspired a book. Peter Zheutlin's best-seller, Rescue Road: One Man, Thirty Thousand Dogs, and a Million Miles on the Last Hope Highway, paints a portrait of Greg's wonderful personality and the effort and heart he gives. You also get to know many other heroes - the folks on the front lines of rescue - who visit shelters, search for strays, and sacrifice much of their lives to benefit dogs. People like Keri Bullock Toth, Kelle Davis, and Alicia McCarty, among many others. To qualify to win, write us a review on iTunes, Stitcher, or both. Deadline is end of day (midnight Pacific Time) on Sunday, March 5, 2017. Winner to be announced in an upcoming episode. iTunes: http://thisispawprint.com/itunes Stitcher: http://thisispawprint.com/stitcher About Our Guest  Tamar Arslanian lives in New York City, and started her blog several years ago, I Have Cat, with the tagline, “Single in the City, with Cat(s).” Shop Cats of New York is her first work, and she shares about her writer’s journey, living the single life in New York, and her life with cats. She also discusses the importance of finding homes for cats, even in a non-traditional space like a local business. Tamar shares her home with two cats, Kip and Haddie. Her middle cat, Petie, died last year. About Shop Cats of New York Humans of New York meets The French Cat in this carefully cultivated, gorgeous full-color collection featuring New York’s iconic felines and the stories behind them. They inhabit New York City’s most legendary and coziest spots—the Algonquin Hotel, a whiskey distillery, Bleecker Street Records, and a host of yoga studios,  bookstores, and bike shops in between. True New Yorkers—masters of people watching—they perch on wine crates, piles of books, and a classic hotel countertop, taking in the activity around them. Depending on their mood, these cats will ignore enthusiastic admirers, offer a few delightful purrs, or occasionally even take a swipe. Some even find a mouse or two to chase.
