Have you ever wondered what it takes to place a stray dog or cat in a permanent home? Meet the everyday heroes of animal rescue and foster who use hard work, dedication, and out-of-the-box ideas to give homeless dogs, cats, and other pets a second chance. We share inspirational stories from leaders, volunteers, and experts in animal and pet rescue, health, training, and behavior. Hear also from people who go above and beyond to be a hero - a hotel that fosters dogs in their lobby, and a man who has driven his truck a million miles to save over 55,000 dogs. These are just some of the people who sacrifice their time - visiting their local dog and cat shelter, fostering animals of all kinds, and advocating for pet safety and preventing cruelty - to make dog, cat, and other animal rescue a reality. We can be found through social media and online at ThisIsPawprint

The Good and Bad of Free Adoptions

Clear the Shelters featured either reduced fee or free adoptions. While this positively increases interest in pet adoptions, the downside is free adoptions can attracted people looking for “bait” dogs and cats for dog fighting, along with folks trying to make some quick money. They do this by adopting an animal for free with the intention of selling the animal for a profit.

Look out for future announcements for our Pit Bull series!! Initial episode should be released around the end of August.

Podcast cover
Read more

Sherri Franklin, Founder and CEO of Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco, shares her journey in animal rescue at the Rescue Think Tank as she celebrates Muttville’s Tenth Anniversary.

Sherri Franklin, a long-time animal advocate and shelter volunteer, founded Muttville in 2007 to save the lives of the older dogs that were considered “unadoptable” and routinely euthanized in area shelters. Working from her house, she saved 27 dogs that first year. She said she “wanted to make senior dogs sexy,” and in fact, has turned the organization into a Bay Area favorite and a national model.

In 2010, Sherri received the Jefferson Award for Public Service, which recognizes those who “inspire others to service.” In 2016, CNN named Sherri a CNN Hero.

Podcast cover
Read more

Mike Murray, Director of Community Outreach for Pet Food Express and the person in charge of the Bay Area Pet Fair, is our talented guest today. The Bay Area Pet Fair is the largest animal rescue event of its kind on the West Coast of the United States, and very likely the whole country (and possibly the entire solar system?). We discuss last year’s extremely successful event and what to look forward to this year.

Saturday and Sunday, September 15 and 16, 2018. Alameda County Fairgrounds, Pleasanton, California. 10:00am to 5:00pm. Free admission and parking.

Last year, there were over 140,000 animal lovers in two days looking for a wonderful new companion. Around 1,500 adoptions!

Great live music, delicious food, Splash Dogs, Police K-9 demos, even Jackson Galaxy from My Cat From Hell! Dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, rodents, and you may even spot a miniature horse rescue.

Dr. Danielle Boyd is our incredible guest today. She is a veterinarian in the middle of her ophthalmology residency in San Antonio, Texas. She is known for being the amazing human companion to a beautiful dog named Squish whose story has gone completely viral through The Dodo, Rachael Ray, and many other features in print, social media, and television.

Squish’s story began as a puppy when he suffered blunt force trauma to the head. With the help of rescue organizations and surgeons, they saved Squish’s life. He lost an eye and lives with a famously crooked jaw, which his fans cannot stop sharing about through photos, videos, and news articles. Some of his fans even share original drawings and other artwork!

A lot of animals would not have survived this far in the journey. Learn how an encounter between Dr. Danielle Boyd and “A Pup Named Squish” made a big difference.

Hadyn Hilton is our incredible guest today. She is the 26-year old owner and founder of Java Cats Café, Georgia's first cat café located in the heart of Atlanta.

Though Hilton's degree and career path was slated for the film industry, Hadyn decided to drop everything to open a business revolving around one of her favorite things: cats! Facing many hurdles in order to open her business, she enjoys encouraging other entrepreneurs to start their journey and gives advice about being a young female business owner in a male-dominated society.

Java Cats Café has been a huge success for cat adoptions and has an established following all across the US and several countries around the world.

Hadyn started a woman-only entrepreneur and business owner Facebook Group called Java Cats Creatives Group. There are a number of members from outside of the Atlanta area!

Fundamentally Feline helped design the Java Cats Café’s Cat Lounge. Ingrid Johnson is the woman behind Fundamentally Feline.

PAWS Atlanta provides the cats for Java Cats Café. Java Cats adopted nearly 200 cats in their first nine months, making a huge impact on PAWS Atlanta’s cat adoptions.

Nancy and Harold have been busy with lots of cats and dogs, including Sugar the Dog. Stay up to date on Instagram.

TNR stands for Trap, Neuter, Return (or Release). It is the method to help feral or community cat populations.

151: Laura Schenone, The Dogs Of Avalon Presentation At Book Passage

Podcast cover
Read more

After adopting an Irish sight hound, her dog Lily, Laura Schenone discovers a remarkable and little-known fight to gain justice for dogs and for all animals.

Greyhounds, bred to be the fastest dogs on earth, are beautiful, gentle, and astonishing creatures. Yet for decades, countless numbers of them have been abandoned and destroyed every year once they can no longer compete and win.

The Dogs of Avalon introduces us to the strong-willed Marion Fitzgibbon, born in rural Ireland, where animals are valued for their utility. But Fitzgibbon believes suffering is felt by all creatures and champions the cause of strays, baffling those around her—including her family—as she, and a group of local women rescue any animal in need, taking on increasingly risky missions.

Elizabeth Young and Ellie Paterson are with Palomacy Pigeon and Dove Adoptions. Elizabeth is the founder and director. Palomacy is a network of volunteers working together to save the lives of domestic, unreleasable pigeons and doves that would otherwise be killed in shelters for lack of adopters. Volunteers respond to calls from shelters, vets, and good samaritans to provide avian vet care for ill or injured birds, long-term foster care, and to develop adopters and place them into qualified forever homes.
