Rank #3: 267 Tim O'Donnell on his 2nd place in Kona

Podcast cover
Read more

Tim O’Donnell finished 2nd in Kona at the Ironman World Championships, breaking 8 hours to finish in 7.59.40.

One of the most consistent performers on the Big Island, Tim has finished in the top ten six times in the last eight years. This year’s result was all the more sweet for him after a difficult year marred by injury - broken ribs following a horrific high speed bike crash kept him away from racing the early season. He managed to secure his slot with a 3rd place at IM Boulder, despite him having a ‘bad race’ in his own words. However, worse was to come when he stepped on a kerb and broke a bone in his foot only 6 weeks before Kona. While this would have been the end of the dream for most athletes, Tim applied his remarkable mental strength. “Don’t focus on what you can’t do, focus on what you can do in that moment to become a better athlete.”

In this interview, we’ll hear:

The story of his injury recovery, and how he used aqua jogging and a zero-G treadmill when he couldn’t run

Training sessions and secrets, and what he’s learned from his coaches Julie Dibbens and Matt Bottrill

Tips for staying healthy with a toddler in the house, including his use of essential oils

The story of his race at Kona that culminated in his 2nd place finish in 7.59.40

You can learn more about Tim O’Donnell on his Instagram (@TOinTri) and his youtube channel The Tim and Rinny Show

Rank #4: 228 Holly Lawrence is BACK and wants a second 70.3 World Championship!

Podcast cover
Read more

Holly Lawrence was the 2016 Ironman 70.3 World Champion, who continued her winning streak in 2017 with 6 more back to back wins over the 70.3 distance. A sore foot during the 2018 Oceanside race turned out to be a broken bone , which put her out for the whole rest of the year. She recently made her comeback, winning 70.3 in Dubai and Bahrain - the latter race being the first piece of the $1 million trifecta, if she can win the World Champs and Dubai again this year. She talks honestly about the mental challenges of dealing with 16 weeks in a cast while her foot healed, and reveals some of the lengths she went to to try to keep training - including swimming with her cast wrapped in plastic! She reveals how injury has been a great teacher for her, and how she’s prioritising more than ever the importance of down time, rest and recovery. Moreover, the time spent reflecting and worrying that her career might even be over has led her to approach this ‘second chance’ with a much lighter heart, and a focus on enjoying every minute. This conversation is really fun, and Holly’s love of training, and life in general, really come through!

Rank #5: 275 Training Your Mind, with Lucy Gossage and Sports Psychologist Helen Davis

Podcast cover
Read more

Lucy Gossage is a 14x Ironman champion, and legend of Ironman UK and Ironman Wales. Helen Davis is a Chartered Sports Psychologist who worked with Lucy over the last 4 years of her career.

It's easy to imagine that success and confidence come easily to a 14x Ironman Champion like Lucy Gossage. However, in frank and open interview, Lucy talks about how she suffered from 'imposter syndrome' for almost all her racing career, never feeling like a 'proper' professional, and often struggled with the confidence and self belief that she could do well in races. In this dual interview, Lucy talks about how working with Helen revolutionised both her training/racing performance, and her belief in herself in her wider life.

Helen and Lucy have teamed up to produce the 6-video IRON-MIND course, which has been developed for Ironman and other endurance athletes to enhance their psychological approach to training and racing. "IRON-MIND is structured on evidence-based research and experience in sport psychology consultancy," says Helen.

In this special edition, Lucy and Helen talk through some very practical, actionable mental training exercises that you can do to improve your mental strength and confidence in your ability.

Paul Newsome from SwimSmooth.com joins us this week for a special edition aimed at helping you improve your swim stroke. Paul is one of the World’s most experienced swim coaches and stroke analysts, having been coaching swimming professionally for over 20 years. The swim smooth method has been adopted by British Triathlon and the ITU for their triathlon coaching courses, and their ‘swim types’ system is great at helping you quickly identify what kind of swimmer you are, and how to rapidly improve.

In this episode we cover:

The background that led to the formation of SwimSmooth

The Swim Types system, consisting of the following six swim types:

Arnie

Bambino

Kicktastic

Overglider

The Finis Tempo Trainer Pro , and why it’s such a useful tool.

Paul’s thoughts from having coached Joe Skipper. We also cover the lessons that we can all apply to our own swimming from him having watched Joe’s improvements, and how they’ve translated into his open water racing.

Ever wonder - ‘How on earth do people go so fast on the bike? Is it all down to fitness, or is there more to it?’ We talk about all the things that you can do to go faster - other than training. Clothing. Body position. Helmet choice. Head position. Hand position. Specific drills to help you hold that new bike position. As we’ll find out, all these things have a MASSIVE effect on how fast your power will let you go - much more so than most athletes realise. It'll take time to adjust to a new position- 6-8 weeks in Matt's experience. But once you get there, you're going faster simply because of your equipment choices and body position, rather than 'just' the training you're doing.

Chris McCormack is one of the true legends of triathlon. A 2 x Kona winner, 6 x Ironman Australia, 2 x ITU World Champion, and 4 x winner at Challenge Roth, and one of the few men to go sub 8 hours in his day. Since retiring from competition, Chris has introduced SuperLeague Tri to the World - innovative race formats, making fast, furious and exciting sport for both the fans and the athletes. In an honest and open interview, he talks about how he battled constant self doubt and negative self image during his racing years, projecting an aggressive prize-fighter persona to deflect attention from worries about his abilities, insecurities and body weight worries. He talks about how a plans for a super-race against Lance Armstrong went sour, and how that in part led to the idea for SuperLeague Tri. He talks about his favourite athletes racing at the moment, and who he thinks will be in the spotlight in 2020. More than anything, Chris is one of the most passionate fans of triathlon that you will ever meet, and his infectious enthusiasm for bringing the sport to more people really shines through during this interview.

Rank #17: 242: Sarah Piampiano - IM Brazil winner, 2nd at IM Hamburg

Podcast cover
Read more

Sarah Piampiano just finished 2nd at Ironman Hamburg with another amazing run - a 2.56 on a really hot day, which was only a couple of minutes down on the fastest male run times. We got this interview in the can just before the race.

She set Ironman Brazil on fire with her win in 2019, when she delivered a 4.43 bike backed by a 2.53 marathon. To put this in context, her marathon was faster than the men's winner, and only 2 male pro's ran faster!

We hear all about her background - from an overworked banker putting in 100 hour weeks, sleeping under her desk and smoking 2 packs of cigarettes a day who entered her first triathlon as a bet! She talks honestly about the changes she's made over the last year to regain her love of the sport after feeling really burned out - we get some great insight into the nutritional changes she's made to stop 'restricting calories' and to start 'maximising nutritional value' from her food.

As she says at the end of the interview - 'We only live once.' :)
